I am not sure about 'real voters', I think Trump knows, he's famous for a show, so he's trying to turn everything in has campaign into a show, and when he can't guarantee a good show, he's switching to the challenging one. I won't buy it, but I like to watch it.

Yes, Mr. Trump may have a lot of fans, but how many will actually vote for him is another matter.
That's the problem of our social media age; it's so easy to get likes and follows. All it takes to get attention in the social media is a catchy slogan.
But it's a long way from a slogan to the voting booth.

"At a news conference before the rally on Tuesday, Mr. Trump refused to answer a question about his immigration policies from a journalist from Univision, a Spanish language cable channel, who was escorted out."
Why does the NYT find it necessary to misrepresent the encounter? Do they imagine that no one will bother to actually watch it?
Mr. Ramos was out of line and he knew it at the time. Moreover, Trump was telling Ramos to sit down even as the security man started guiding him out. Ramos could have simply sat down, but instead he kept prattling.

The first four items in this section are Trump related. Not one of the items discusses the historical offense of scapegoating a group of people and suggesting they be rounded up for transport out of the country. I can't find where the Trump coverage discusses the danger of violence as a result of his hate speech. The media is making a fortune from Mr. Trump's run for the highest office in the land, all of this hatred, bombast and ignorance is a windfall or an irresponsible media. It most certainly will cost America something dear.
13
I agree whole-heartedly. Thank you for this!

I still would like to know who the goons were that Trump nodded to and they went into action pushing "not escorting" Mr. Ramos out of the room. Is this what we should expect or even tolerate?

Trump the quintessential vacum cleaner salesman perfecter of the create-the-need sale! Like Ralph and Norton in The Honeymooners trying to sell vacuum cleaners Donald knocks on your door, walks into your living room and throws dirt on your perfectly clean carpet. This country is in trouble! This country is no longer great! We need a wall on the boarder, the hoards are approaching! Vote for me and you will never have a stray hippo in your gardens in New England, I guaranty it! Anyone can pretend to fix problems that don't exist. Watch the card, now where's that card! Three Card Monty mesmerizes and confounds the simple but won't address the complexities of the current global environment. We live in the greatest country in the world. That has not changed but may unless we take the manufactured fake dirt, along Donald Trump and throw both out in the gutter. Otherwise the fire he dreams of pulling Rosebud from may be our country burning.

The voting urn is the coffin, either for Trump or for the US of A.

What's known about trumps ancestors? How and where did they get in?

Through innovation and assimilation.. The exact opposite of all the new wave of immigrants. They all want to act and live like they did back in the S**thole 3rd world country they came from.
The illegal immigrants here now, which are 67% mexican keep having kids that identify as mexican, are anti-american and hate every race besides their own! They hate black and white people the most...
Trump/Carson !

Joe, campaigning politicians don't look at all voters as "fellow U.S. citizens" but in Iowa, the evangelical vote; in South Carolina, the black vote; in Miami, the Hispanic vote. This is reality and doesn't make a person racist. But a 20% turnout is shameful, no matter who the voters are.

Trump is the "Truth in Advertising" version of the Republican Party. There aren't any long scientific names for the ingredients inside disguising the bad elements of the product. There aren't any pretty labels on the front making the cow pie inside look like it must be the most wonderful product inside. There is no confusion of how much the container actually holds because the bag hasn't been inflated to make the bag look fuller than it is. Trump is the in-your-face, arrogant, superior, aggressive, super rich, "Your Fired", person, just another human being, who "really" is the Republican Party. The rest of the republican party just doesn't want to be seen that way because that is what narcissist do...they want to be seen as being good, when they aren't, while projecting the worst of themselves onto others.
Yet, while Trump has a persona which is being shown through media as embarrassing the rest of the GOP field, the Koch brothers are still right behind him. Donald Trump is staffing up his presidential campaign by turning to the Koch-backed Americans for Prosperity for his high profile hires. Since David Koch failed to make the presidential run in 1980 he is trying to be the president by proxy now and is willing to spend a billion dollars to do it.

This isn't really about turning crowds into voters. Crowds show up for parades, and car accidents. Voters show up at voting booths.
In national, Presidential elections, it is getting that last 1 or 2 percent to the polls to vote for your candidate, putting him or her in that coveted 47 or 48% place, the difference between being President and being John McCain. That is what both of President Obama's election teams excelled at: figuring out who was on the fence, and what it was they needed to do to get them off the fence. Sometimes, all it takes is a ride to the polls.
Trump and his people will never have to worry about such nuance, because he will never stay in the race long enough for any such things to matter. This guy is gone a year from now. He will bluster and say things like "America wasn't ready for a real President!" and all sorts of other nonsense, but he will be either a write-in vote by November 2016, or a wacko, 3rd party candidate who gets, maybe, 5% of the U.S. vote, at most. I'm guessing he isn't even on the ballot.
I think it will come down to money for him. He won't want to spend what is necessary to run for the Presidency, and he won't have enough high-roller donors to get him to where he needs to be. He may be some sort of low billionaire, but Jeb and Hillary and their PACS will each spend a billion getting there, and perhaps, more.

The Italians had a lovely experience in dealing with a media mogul turned leader. Now the GOP is finding out what it's like having their own Donaldino Trumpusconi.
4
Trump really does show. He's a showman. People watch his interviews because it's fun. I find it hard to believe that Americans take seriously to him. I don't believe that his jokes will help America. He is not a politician, he's just a successful businessman!
5
Yes, Trump is an "outsider", at least in terms of elective office. Yes, he's "anti-establishment", as compared to Bush and Clinton.
Yes, he's not courting "special interests" - his wealth makes that easier.
But, there's more. He is an ardent "birther" and his immigration "plan" is the cornerstone of his campaign.
Both of these positions appeal to the racist instincts in some, if not many, of his supporters - party affiliation aside. And that cannot be discounted or ignored when assessing his rise in popularity.

I agree. There is far more racism in this country than I had imagined.
The Donald” is a true master at promoting hatred and animosity toward Hispanics. And if he keeps shooting off his mouth, who knows where this will end.
1. Things took a violent turn in the last two days, as two men were charged in an attack on a homeless Hispanic man in Boston. One of the accused is reported to have cited Mr. Trump’s views as an inspiration. Mr. Trump responded by calling his supporters “passionate,” but he [Trump] did not denounce the act.
2. While I was reading the replies to an article on Donald Trump, a former US service man chimed in. He encouraged the readers to purchase guns and start shooting Mexicans.
Is this the direction that you want things to turn in this country ?

Having gotten himself kicked off a weekly $27 million a year show, the 69 year old billionaire Mr.
Trump will be forced to run as an Independent - unless he receives the Republican nomination - to maintain the public relevancy to feed his insatiable narcissistic ego. As a strong Democratic supporter, all I can say is"RUN DONALD, RUN"!!!! A better ally we can't have!!! (:

Trump will find no shortage of voters, unfortunately, aided by the polite press corps that didn't walk out in solidarity with Jorge Ramos (who was tossed out of a recent 'press conference' for daring to try for answers from the Too Big To Question candidate). Media personalities tut tut their disapproval of Ramos, accused of giving a lecture or worse, engaging in debate! What would Edward R. Murrow do?
10
I watched the press conference entirely. Your version is untrue. Mr. Trump invited questions and pointed to a questioner. Mr. Ramos interrupted by shouting continued questions. He was told he had not been asked (essentially to await his turn) He continued noisily and was quietly removed and later allowed to return and was engaged in a lengthy question and answer with Trump.
I cannot see why the type of criticism you have directed at the candidate is justified. I know the background story and the dispute with Mr. Ramos station. Irrelevant. Trump is an individual, blunt, sometimes rude, but in this case Mr. Ramos was at fault and was treated courteously by staff.

But why does anyone care about the Iowa caucuses? Only 20% of the eligible voters in a small state that doesn't reflect America's diversity bother to show up--a record Iowans should be ashamed of. And with 17 candidates, how many votes can any one candidate receive that would reflect anything? There's probably a higher vote for a Des Moines mayoral race. And we vote in general elections by secret ballot, not in caucuses!
The days when a candidate could move to Iowa for months and "win" the caucus vote are long since over--and what does a victory actually mean. Remember Michele Bachman, the most recent winner? She edged out Rep. Ron Paul.

Someone's gotta be first. I don't really care about our first in the nation status but that's the way it is. Regarding diversity, the ballot doesn't know the race, gender, sex, height, weight, or eye color of the person casting it, so what difference does it make? Does it make you racist to point out the racial makeup of our state instead of simply considering us fellow citizens?

I love it. Please put this clown in front of every TV camera possible. He is the poster child for todays GOP and everyone needs to know it. He says what other GOP candidates would rather do through dog whistles.

Half jokingly, an American academic friend says FTAA hemispheric integration is near completion. The downside, however, is expected LA upward convergence towards high level American standards is happening in reverse.
Today, American income distribution is very much similar to those of Latin America. American politics is also converging to Latin standards.
Donald Trump politics easily beats former strongman Hugo Chavez of Venezuela or populist Cristina Kirchner in Argentina. The difference, of course, is an elected president Donald Trump will have control of atomic weapons.

Trump will not be the Republican Nominee. The first major clue was his awful and embarrassing performance in the first debate. He shot himself in the foot right away by announcing that he wouldn't be supporting his fellow candidates if they were the nominee. This resulted in boos from the audience.
His attitude towards woman and minorities is beyond a shot in his own feet. He's practically blowing them off. The only real viable candidate for the GOP is Jeb Bush. He'll find a way to beat the rest. First of all, he is a more experienced politician. Secondly, he's smarter. It's well known that Jeb is the "smart" Bush. He showed it in the debates. Do I think he would make a good president? Of course not. He'd be another disaster. However, one must remain objective when looking at the political landscape. Jeb reveled himself to be an experienced and cunning campaigner. Trump revealed himself to be a brash, rude and moronic campaigner with zero experience in the field.
Americans love celebrities. Take away "The Apprentice" and Trump would be left with very little right now. He's a joke.

I just can't believe Trump is for real and I have a fantasy that if he gets the nomination he'll hold a press conference and say"Today I have exposed the republican voters for what they truly are...mean,hateful,ready to persecute the"other" in the name of some ugly religious ideology which has nothing to do with Christianity. I tried to be as outrageous as possible to see if you'd decide things have gone too far,but it only increased your adoration, and stirred your blood lust. Well, folks, you've been punked but now I'm all you have,be atches." I don't mean to offend the old school republicans, but you could have stopped this descent into hell years ago.

As to the Univision reporter"s question how Mr. Trump plans to deport 11 million people, the plan will simply be to enforce current law - signed by President Reagan in 1987 - and fine and/or imprison employers who illegally hire/employ such people to consequently dry up the jobs so they will "self-deport". Why has this enforcement issue not been written about, reported on, or specifically presented to all the candidates - including Mr. Trump? The Republicans and their business backers don't want to lose the cheap exploited workers, the Democrats want the Latino vote. Come on New York Times, step up to the plate and pursue the question with the candidates. Isn't this what the "Free Press" all about?
3
Cheap exploited workers ? Exactly ! On the one hand we say, "Go back to Mexico !" but on the other we want their cheap labor. Which is it? We want them to work in the fields for next to nothing picking our vegetables and fruit. We want them to work in sweatshops. We want them to mow our lawns for next to nothing. We want them to babysit our children for little pay. But we want them to leave ! Make up your mind. I can tell you this, if Trump succeeds at shipping them all out, then prepare yourselves to pay twice as much for your food ! And the man at Home Depot who supports Trump can prepare to lose his job as well. Illegals are contractors who frequent HD. Less business> fewer employees needed> stores close. No one thinks of these things.
The majority of them are family-oriented poor people who want to feed their families. They are not the rapists and murderers that Trump speaks of. Those are the minority, just as the mafia are the minority in the Italo-American community.
It is amazing how eager people are to believe the lies. But then, I suppose that is the cornerstone of racism. Believe it because you want to justify your racism.

Considering who are the few who actually go vote (10%, +/- of registered) in the GOP primaries, Trump may just end up with their nomination...pretty much ensuring the Democrats another four years in the White House.
It is simply unbelievable to imagine enough voters on both sides of the aisle plus independents being so fed up with the flaccid Republican leadership and contrarian House conservatives that a caustic bombastic candidate like Trump, regardless of who the Democrats nominate, would actually be elected POTUS...
If memory serves, Sarah Palin was also good at energizing, verbally at least, the low-informationalists non-participants of the far right wing into a frenzied state...and (also?) without that bombastic support translating over into a general election success.
You go Donald, you capture that GOP nomination!

It is said Trump has anywhere from 2 to 7 billion dollars, Forbes says 4 billion. Even if it is $1.5 billion as per Wall Street Journal it is a tidy sum. Trump wants to be the head honcho of this country and wants to run this country according to his values and to hell with anyone who has different values and social/political/economic desires. If he were to be elected president, we have to wonder if he would even have a Cabinet for who could tell him anything? And Congress…well…there are 535 members in Congress. Trump could give each and every one of them a million dollars which would be 535 million dollars, something he could easily afford. So essentially Trump could buy the entire government, except maybe not the Supreme Court, but they are rather conservative anyway, and that is just another 9 million dollars also anyway. The upshot is that Trump could buy the government and do exactly what he wants and be the tyrant he wants to be: The United States of Trump! Are we going to let this happen?
2
This man spends all his time yammering about "illegals." Not one Trump supporter questions how Trump is going find and round up 11,000,000 people and send them back to their native country. And when he is questioned, he and his supporters get their knickers in a twist. Never underestimate the stupidity of the American people. The fact that this man is leading in the polls illustrates just that.
14
Neither do they ask whether he should round-up 11 million people.

The fourteenth amendment has to be changed. It was not written or meant to be interpreted the way it is being done today.

Republicans, conservatives and tea people believed Sarah Palin could turn excitement into votes.
The McCain/Palin ticket lost in one of the biggest landslides in recent political history.
Trump provides no specifics on domestic or foreign policy. Nothing on international financial markets, nothing in China, Russia or the Middle East.
Amazed serious minded republicans tolerate him.

According to eh PEW institute, 50% of all illegals are NOT from Mexico, but from all over the world (e.g., Phillipines, China, Japan). They mostly enter through the airports and Canadian border. Is he going to build walls around all of our airports ???

Turning Crowds Into Real Voters, turning water into wine. Trump is not a Jesus Christ. Although Trump is a billionaire and he could easily feed the hungry. But the only thing he does is feeding fellow Americans with his empty promises and racist statements. He said once: "80% of all the shootings in New York City are blacks. If you add Hispanics that figure goes to 98%, 1% white". No comments.

As I am proficient in Spanish, I decided to watch the late news on Univisión to get a different perspective. Ramos has made several requests for an interview with Trump to no avail. In June he wrote a note directly to Trump requesting an interview. An image of the note, with the reporter’s phone number, was tweeted by Trump.
As Trump claims to be suing Univisión, I doubt that he will give an interview to any one from the network any time soon. When questioned, the candidates don’t give substantive responses about their positions. Unlike others in the press, Ramos is willing to push for details. Would Trump have called on Ramos if he had waited his turn?
Ramos has been called rude but he isn’t the first to speak out of turn at a press conference. I noticed Trump signaling to have Ramos removed. Doesn’t the Constitution allow for the tough questions to be asked? Don’t all of us have a right to know a candidate’s policies to make an informed decision?
Trump was rude and condescending. He told Ramos to go back to Univisión, ordered the journalist to sit down and called him emotional. Way to go Republicans! Nice way to treat an award winning anchor whose nightly program is seen by several million in the US.
I am a Portuguese immigrant and I am tired of the way ALL immigrants are treated. Today they insult the Mexicans; who will they insult tomorrow?

In spite of all what is being said lately, in the US crossing the border without papers or without going through customs is not a crime: no one can be tried for doing it, and no federal statute labels it as a crime (felony or misdemeanor). Deportations are not even criminal proceedings: they are administrative ones. Thus, to label people as illegal assumes that they have committed a crime, when in actuality they have committed only an administrative infraction. Regardless, at least a half of undocumented people entered this country "legally"; they simply stayed after their tourist or student visas expired. The problem with most of these "patriotic constitutionalists" is that they know little or nothing about the Constitution and the laws of this country.
At the end of the day, this is simply another explosion of nativism. The very people who are now kvetching about Hispanics have ancestors (Irish, Italian, etc.) who were rejected by the "real Americans" (whoever claimed to be so at the time) when they first arrived. Every wave of immigrants will eventually come to believe that they are the last ones, the last ones entitled to "their" American dream. And this nativism always stems from racist demagoguery & fear-mongering.

I am a legal immigrant myself from Germany, many years ago. You fail to make a distinction between legal immigration to which almost no one objects and to illegally entering this country to which most of us object including myself. In the age of computers, one must ask oneself how do these people overstay their visas? They could very easily be tracked and were once by US Immigration. I had a nanny years ago for my son who was allowed to stay a year and was called several times by U.S. Immigration before she was due to leave and after she had left. This was all done over the phone with flight #s , etc. For the other undocumented workers, coming from Mexico and Central America, these are workers we very much need. We need a guest worker program for them that properly tracks them. It is not rocket science just lack of will for decades....and a muddled debate about immigration that mixes up two very different categories.

The other Republican candidates for President are getting exposed to a guy-Trump- who has spent his entire life as a promoter. He has forever been promoting his businesses and his brand and he has been highly successful at it. He is also a highly successful salesman who like Bill Clinton knows how to reach people and sell them his brand. Lindsey Graham is correct that Trump is shallow-because he never needed to be anything else; and he has no grasp of the Middle East mess -but neither do Graham and his warrior in chief sidekick John McCain who would have us fighting six wars right now had he been elected instead of Pres. Obama.
Trump is stirring the pot mightily and may actually give off some good ideas about gun control if he continues to speak out courageously. Things like continuing to attack Ms. Kelley may ultimately do him in however. In the meantime, I am highly entertained by this guy.

A large swath of the Tea Party blog community is practically orgasmic over Trump (the rest seem to love Cruz or Carson). Given that "illegal" immigrants, gays, and Muslims are who they love to hate the most this is not terribly surprising.
12
would you make medicare a law in every state? we are United but every state has its own rules that are very unfair to the poor can you make a difference?

You dont have to like TRUMP..but you have to admit he is correct. America needs to enforce our immigration laws we already have, needs to deport illegals and stop letting them take us hostage..ILLEGAL=CRIMINAL and only Democrats dont seem to get that fact. Ill be glad to see Trump in our White House. At least he is smart enough to stand FOR the country he is elected to serve, unlike what we have now.. Democrats are against RICH WHITE MEN but dont seem to ahve a problem with RICH WHITE old crooked politician women..baffles the mind..

Wrong.
The immigration situation is nuanced and multi layered...... You cannot expel 11M people, many of whom help support social security, state taxes and the overall economy etc. Yes--that's right, illegals pay taxes, look it up.
Further, they bring a certain entrepreneurial work ethic that is missing from the "poor me" entitled white guy crowd. I have way more respect for a person who risks it all to escape certain death and/or economic devastation so that they can work like a dog for a better life. These are the types of people that made America great, whereas the current crop of whiners that follow Trump beat their chests and cry if they are asked to work overtime.

@Pam in Georgia - NO I don't have to admit that Trump "is correct" about immigrants. He is dead wrong and a bigot to put it mildly. The vast majority of undocumented folks come in and do things like pick your tomatoes and buss dishes. Others mow well-manicured lawns, clean house, and act as nannies.
Objections to Mr. Trump have nothing to do with his being a "rich white man." Most of the candidates we see are rich and white. Most of them are also men. As to his being elected - well that's not going to happen, fortunately.

It is interesting that the many who are critical of Trump are supportive of Clinton's ridiculous excuses.
He has given more interviews than Clinton who has given only three to date.

Before your readers blindly attack Trump they should take a good look at their candidate.

With eyes wide open I see an egomaniacal, reality tv actor. He has deluded himself (and apparently others) into thinking that by force of his personality he can solve all problems. If his billions were taken away he would likely be standing on a corner telling passersby how wonderful he is.
22
SBLISS--I agree with you on almost everthing except for what he would be telling passerbys.....It would more akin to "You are a LOSER, You are STUPID" and s on.
10
So funny- and of course you are correct. I can picture him now, but his hair is different.
3
Trump desperately needs to try to conquer those hair problems. I don't think that a man who really should be confined to a hairdressers chair for at least 8 hrs a day can handle the problems of this country. The red hat does not adequately cover what's under there. And I do not see how the country can be governed by such a crazy bush. The Republican Party has got Bush and it has got bush. One is a proto Mussolini the other is a Rove-Atwater cheater dirty trickster. True big Bush doesn't have grave hair problems. But is the fact that you don't have grave hair problems a qualification to be president?
11
"Republican pollster Frank Luntz assembled a 29-person focus group Monday night to assess the political strength of the New York billionaire who has risen to the top of Republican preference polls."
It is only Tuesday night now, but lots has changed already.

If Fox News can stay in business with their propaganda style news then there is a good probability that Donald Trump can be the Republican Candidate for President. There are plenty of Republican voters who would like him and I see no reason why they should not. In comparison to the rest of the Republican candidates, he really is not that different. And the only thing that seperates him from the rest is that he is not a career politician and that is a good thing.
Lastly if he becomes President of US, frankly he can't be worst than George W. Bush!
Lastly if he becomes President of US, frankly he can't be worst than George W. Bush!
3
He will never get the Latino Vote. He will never get the Black vote. The white people who are following him seem to forget that no one can be elected President without the votes of people of color.
10
He will also never get my vote. I am a middle class college educated white woman. There are many of us....
6
I think Trump's lead in the polls exposes how thin the religious right's belief system is. He clearly doesn't believe in God, his numerous divorces, should be costing him the conservative support but instead it is swelling because he represents their fears and hatred of women, Latinos and his disdain for his fellow politicians. Donald Trump would not be getting this much support if there wasn't this underbelly of America that loves to hate and blame others for their problems.
31
You are right. Where are all of the deeply religious Christians? I am a Christian and I am embarrassed at their silence. Love is in my Bible, not hatred of fellow man.
In this report the NYT clearly accepts at face value the claim that Trump is an unconventional candidate who is bent on radically changing Washington. There is not attempt to analyze this claim at all or to understand if Trump really represents anything new. Instead the reporters parrot Trump sound bites as though they were homespun nuggets of wisdom. Where is the source of disaffection in this country? It's probably not to be found in Trump's campaign for president, but you you wouldn't know that reading the NYT.

The Donald says he will hire people who are very smart to carry out his plans for the government. The solution is "management." (Gee, does he mean people who worked for Goldman Sachs before joining the government are dummies?)
That raises the question of how you hire such superior people on government salaries, which tend to be lower than in the private sector, sometimes MUCH lower.
Does The Donald plan to raise government wages and totally blow the budget?
Or does he think he can find enough Republican altruists who will do superior work for less than stellar pay, maybe for the privilege of working for "The Donald" so they can come to work every day wondering when he will say "You're FIRED"?

12
I presume that he'll hire the same "very smart" investigators he sent to Hawaii to look into Mr. Obama's birth certificate in 2012. Trump would repeatedly tell us that his people were finding "shocking" information, which was never revealed to us. His "base" supporters don't care and would still love him if he said the moon was made of green cheese. They shame the electorate.
5
Don't think you'll find too many people from GS who went into government. There are some but it's a tiny number. You fail to totally overlook the fact that most members of Congress (who in reality could not form a brain trust or get into an Ivy League school) are routinely picked up to lobby and are very often paid millions of dollars upon exit.
1
Running a govt is very different from running a corp. What would the dear Donald do with Senators and Congressmen and Judges whom he cannot fire? Buying and selling is a much more uncomplicated transaction than running a large and fractious country that has three parts, two of which he would need to learn to influence and cannot fire! Funny guy!

Ramos behaved badly.
If you're going to stand up and ask a question while someone else had the floor you are rude.
Trump handled him properly. He was escorted out and when was given an opportunity to ask his questions in turn.
Rather than ask a question he started with, "YOU Can't".That dons't sound like a question. It was grandstanding.

7
You're kidding! Ramos was rude to Trump? Trump is rude, obnoxious, will do anything to avoid questions he really has no answers for. Somehow Ramos behaved badly but The Donald gets a pass?
13
It doesn't excuse Ramos. He should have behaved better than what you'd expect of Trump. It was a contest of who'd be the smaller man.
1
CAdVA, Mr. Trump has been ignoring repeated requests by Mr. Ramos for an interview and took the plunge yesterday. He did appear to be rude, but Trump treated him rudely too. He was most un-Presidential in tone and demeanor. Univision and Mr. Trump are also embroiled in litigious proceedings. It was a draw in my opinion. This quest for the WH looks like a bad reality show.
2
Donald Trump is a racist bigot, appealing to the ill informed and the easily conned.
He has attracted 22% of 46% of the country, or about 10% of the bottom rung of voters.
No decent company will work with this man after this disgraceful run for office spreading hate, bigotry and ignorance.
No business person will want to be associated with this walking disaster's projects.
He gained fame first as a joke, then as a beacon for bigots, xenophobes and hate mongers.
He has set the Republican party back for decades.
The party lost the black vote, lost women, lost Asians, lost LGBT, and now has permanently lost Hispanics.
With every election cycle, demographics have been working against the Republican party, but Trump managed to accelerate that dynamic such that a Republican candidate will not win national office for decades.
Trump personifies the ugliness within the Republican party: the self-interested money-grubber who earned his money ripping off creditors, students, homebuyers and anyone believing in this con man.
Someone who cheats other people to make money does not make for a good President. He would simply find a way to cheat the rest of America for his personal benefit.
Being sued for fraud, lying, cheating and filing multiple bankruptcies to avoid paying debts owed, he is fit for jail, not the White House.

"filing multiple bankruptcies to avoid paying debts owed, he is fit for jail, not the White House."
That's true, unless you're a Democrat. Take all the money that the taxpayers lost in the 4 Trump bankruptcies. Now, add $25 million, and multiply by 20. See that number? It's less than what taxpayers lost in the Obama engineered bankruptcy of Solyndra.
Now, take that number, and multiply by 22. You should now be at $11 billion. That's how much taxpayers lost in the GM bankruptcy bailout.
Why is bankruptcy a bad thing when a Republican does it, and it costs taxpayers nothing, but a good thing when a Democrat spends billions through bankruptcy to buy the votes of UAW members (GM) and Democratic party bigwhigs (Solyndra)?

Bush bailed out GM. With no payback requirement. Obama made loans that have already been paid back. Huge difference.

The Trump Show is about to implode drastically.
Trump is a product of deal-making and zero-sum money gathering. His ire is shared by some but not most; most Americans proudly embody (thoughtful) American values enshrined in our constitution. Trump appears not to understand much outside of dealmaking and money-making (and NY bluster and blister), including the Constitution, and accompanying American values.
The Trump drumbeat sounds ever more discordant with every beat.

The mainstream news media has been predicting the implosion of the Trump campaign since late May.
Next week is September, and every week the media predicts Trump's demise, the bigger his lead in the polls gets in the GOP, and among independent voters.
Keep up the good work naysayers.

A Howard Beale is fun in a movie (Network) but not as a president.
Trump was fun, seemed to be saying something of some value, but is not, just ranting ad nauseam at everything and nothing.
Folks aren't dumb; Trump is at his high water mark.

You really don't get it do you? He has a very small percentage of low tier voters. He can not get elected by just appealing to this handfull of haters. And I mean thank god of that.... because what an ugly country you all would create.

Wave hands , spout meaningless nonsense. Wave hands , carp about the cheap shots the opposition takes , ridicule opposition. Wave hands, talk tough about deporting millions , forcing Mexico to build a ' real ' fence .
This is for real ? This is the best they can do ? This is the top dog in Clownsville ?
Is Jesus upset with the GOP ? Too many moneychangers in the Temple ?

As a political foreign correspondent I look at Trump and then the other wannabes and I recognize human faults and imperfections. Then I look at the other candidates and a DEEP sympathy for America appears in my senses when I fear the US' future if any of them get elected into the White House!
Fox tv is owned by Rupert Murdoch, I worked for his news orgqanization in Australia back in the 50's and his purpose of moving to the US wa to purchase the NY Post replace the American reporters (which he did) and use his $ and influence to interfere with American politics, etc which his Fox tv has done with people like Ailes and Kelly all along!
Kelly was set on Trump like a rottweiler to try and trip and embarrass him, Trump being no fool quicky recognized this and retaliated!
As a tv reporter myself I well know it is very easy to sit back, aggravate and provoke political candidates and that's exactly what Kelly and Fox does. Ailes is a Murdoch and GOP old school crony and puppet, he got into his position as news chief by brown nosing (as the American saying goes) the powerful few who want to keep their control over Washington and the American people and avoid change at all costs!
Trump is a revolutionary in politics, a NON politician which is exactly what America needs at this time, NO ONE will ever pull his strings!

God Bless You Paul.
As a lawyer, I saw Megyn's cheap stunt a mile away, one that would have gotten her thrown out of several courtrooms here in Washington DC where we try cases.
Now we have a foreign correspondent--a newser explaining how pathetic, cheap and tacky Megyn Kelly's antics were.
The prosecution rests.

My dog is also not a politician.
I think he is better qualified than that ignoramus Trump because he is not a bigot, and when he doesn't know something, he just remains quiet rather than prove his ignorance loudly.

The only one Trump is beholden to is Trump.
That should give you pause.
That should give you pause.
1
I've been watching Trump since his announcement. He is slowly releasing details of his platform and slowly building his campaign machine. His bullish talk about forced deportation, will most likely morph into a mandatory registration program- in other words, families will not be herded out of the country. I think this is a more rational and easier pill to swallow for American voters with a conscience. Realistically, he is the only candidate with a comprehensive immigration plan. He's a smart guy and he'll tighten up his message and stay the course. Trump will win him the nomination and ultimately the Presidency.
6
Comprehensive immigration plan? Are you kidding. He has offended all the groups except white haters. And despite the fact that white haters think their votes are the only ones that matter, there are not enough of those kinds of votes to elect him.
5
Sure, that will happen at about the same time that Santa gets you that pony.
Do you have any idea of what it would cost to identify and deport that many people? Where do you think the tax dollars for that would come from?

1
The popularity of Donald trump can understand. Democrats are unable to justify the trust they had a society. This is why citizens of the United States decided to find a fresh perspective on what is happening in the country and the world. Trump as no one else fits that description.
2
Donald Trump is just the nasty bully from high school grown older and bigger, but never maturing. How can there be so much talk about getting rid of bullying and yet some are supporting him in this election?
13
America, the TV series. No, thanks.
11
Reality check election was held tomorrow bush would be president its just way bussness gets done .Unless Trump can come up with better solution to health care crisis in American family with fair system not based on profit
It's worrisome to read comments from his 'supporters.' How many have not been paid, seduced, or bullied? Even as a die hard Democrat, I cringe at the remote possibility that this man might be the only other viable choice besides Sanders, who is stuck in the politics of 45 years ago, at a minimum. Articles about Trump feature a photo on a high rise Brooklyn building with his father, built with taxpayers' money in the 1950s and 1960s, for a stage photo in 1973. Private Manhattan towers now easily eclipse his own built on choice Manhattan locations 30-40 years ago.
Is it any wonder he's seeking a 'higher office?'

" Many traditional operatives are skeptical of Mr. Trump’s ability to organize ranks of volunteers and activists ... in the state’s nearly 1,700 precincts. "
Takes only a pyramid scheme to accomplish.
No wonder pundits are baffled.

It looks like Trump supporters have rejected the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision. They want a candidate who is his own man, not beholden to any one. It looks like some Republicans are seeing the folly of decisions made by party elites who take money from the rich, stuff it into their pockets and vote for the top 1%. It seems that we citizens have allowed the Presidency to be literally bought by the highest bidder, while party handlers realize the futility of the money they've spent. Karl Rove must be twisting like a trapped mouse. Trump was against his little war.
6
Anyone who just watched him answer questions in Dubuque, IA will realize he can win. He answered more questions in 30 minutes than Hillary has in 30 weeks and answered them in a measured, engaging tone. Agree with him or not, he is not to be taken lightly.
10
He talks a lot, that's not the same as giving answers.
16
Perhaps. But it's closer to giving answers than Hillary's method, of never even taking questions for weeks, and then running scared off stage when someone asks a follow up, like she did in Nevada.
1
On top of the phony support, Trump paid these people in CASH, no questions asked, so they would not have to report the invome, and there would be no record of the expense.
Typical The Donald SLEAZE. Why not break the law at the same time as you announce for President?
Typical The Donald SLEAZE. Why not break the law at the same time as you announce for President?
3
That is quite an inferential leap even for a Hillary troll. Just how do you know they won't pay taxes? It must be wonderful to be omniscient!
2
Gee, I didn't see that in the article. Perhaps you can tell us where you came up with that crazy allegation. And you call him sleazy...

PhilZ and GMoog - you want proof. Here you go:
See internal link in the article at paragraph 13 last sentence
It was a far cry from the early days of his campaign, when actors WERE REPORTEDLY HIRED to fill out the crowd when he announced his presidential run.

We ve elected these folks for so long the spotlight should be on the electorate. These candidates reflect attitudes of America, but thankfully small slivers. I m still waiting Conservatron to be invented to meld them all together. Then maybe they d have a chance.
And btw, here in MN we tried a non politician for Governor; it was an absolute mess that took years to make good again.

The fact that Trump is a serious candidate fortunately proves that a large segment of the population is smart and ready to vote for a better life for the United States of America! Hura! Go Trump!
6
They are willing to vote for pipe dreams - the emperor has no clothes. This is a man who went bankrupt 4 times - and if elected will immediately give himself more tax breaks.
5
It proves mostly that insane plans and loud talk impress the rubes, unfortunately. Trump out-Bushes Bush in thinking he can order the world to obey him and it will. He believes that bullying will carry the day, and God knows how many lives he might be willing to spend to try. But it won't, and his being fairly nuts, and his followers more so, won't change that.
2
How exactly does a President "if elected immediately give himself more tax breaks"? I must have missed that day in Constitutional Law class.
Others can tout The Donald's marketing acumen and the charisma of the Trump brand in hawking his candidacy, however, there's one thing people are not talking about, and that's how Donald Trump seems wholly intent to evade the pitfalls that have mired so many past republican presidential candidates. Principally, what I refer to is the near-absence of Trump's policy positions, given he's barely spoken of them, meaning it's become obvious Trump thinks he can evade the standard-issue republican campaign strategy of "pedal to the hard right" in the primary / "pedal to the middle" in the national election, a political hat trick that republicans have not proven themselves particularly adept at over the past years. and which Trump thinks he can sidestep. Yes, I honestly think the Trump campaign believes they can pitch The Donald all the way into the White House simply by encasing their candidate in the politically hermetic cult of personality, virtually issue-free. What's interesting is whether they have a fair reading of who and what America truly is in the present and whether they can get away with it. One sincerely hopes not.

Attention Liberal NYT readers:
As you may or may not know, calling Trump supporters "low IQ" or "low info" voters, as several people commenting here have done, is just going to make them angrier and cause even more people to support him. Is that your intent?
Also, I would suggest that people think twice before criticizing Trump supporters as "gullible" for being taken in by Trump's grand promises. Hey, I voted twice for that guy who promised "Change You Can Believe In" and all I got was a heath care program that was a giant sell-out to the drug makers, insurance companies, etc. I've voted Democratic my whole life and got Wall Street deregulation, outsourcing of jobs to Asia & Mexico, and other really bad stuff. Trump says he's for the little guy. Heck, why not give him a shot at this? It's actually not "un-intelligent" to feel this way.
Lastly, Trump is most certainly bombastic & a bit of a loose cannon (okay, more than a bit), which makes me concerned with respect to foreign affairs. However, I'm living in a time when ISIS is running amuck slaughtering tens of thousands of innocent people while meanwhile, in the Ukraine, Russian troops are "vacationing" in their tanks, rolling though the countryside enjoying the sunshine while occasionally killing people & blowing things up. Perhaps a bit more backbone & "chutzpah" by an American President wouldn't be an entirely bad thing? Desiring a more strategic foreign policy isn't "dumb".

Thank you for providing proof that Trump supporters are indeed gullible.
Trump's clothing line is made in China. He could care less about American workers.
The ACA means you won't ever go bankrupt because of medical bills. If you have a 401k it has recovered it's value after the G.W. recession. Your home value is probably in better shape as well.
Your claim of being a Democrat is bogus.

Calling them "smart" won't change them a bit; they're not bright but they are tenacious, and they've found their match in Trump.
1
To DR,
Why don't you believe I'm a Democrat? There's such a thing as a centrist Dem! Not every Dem is a liberal Dem! I guess I should change my registration to Independent since the Dem police don't find me liberal enough?
In any event, with regard to your points.
Trump clothes made in China: Ok, you got with that one.
ACA: Do you really think our monthly med payments wouldn't be a tad lower if Obama had gotten a little tougher with the "medical /pharma" complex? He came into office with a huge approval rating and then didn't use the bully pulpit to get something better!
401K: We are now seeing the end result of Obama's reappointment of that no-nothing Bernanke. Years of zero-interest $$ for bankers and hedge funds to recklessly invest in high-yield debt in both the developed countries & emerging markets. Now the bubble is bursting. Check your 401K. What they're now mainly blaming on the China debt bomb bursting is just the start of the worldwhile debt bubble.
Home values: Yep, they went up. And they're going to go right back down again when the debt bubble bursts.
P.S. Who was whispering in the ears of the Fed & Treasury all through the Bush & Obama admins? Goldman Sachs, Citibank, Blackrock, hedge funds, etc. At least Trump knows how the markets really work, poor Bush & Obama had no clue & got snookered by the Wall Street "experts". Dodd-Frank's not going to save the banks when this gargantuan bubble bursts!

Enough Trump! I can't stand the sight or sound of him and I'm sure not reading another article about this blowhard.
7
Keep drinking the HRC kool-aid and relax!
2
And that's exactly how many of us feel about Hillary. To quote her husband and political raison d'etre, "I feel your pain."
The argument that Trump's popularity is explained by the public's frustration with "professional politicians" ignores the role the "public" has played in shaping how politicians behave. Politicians have learned what's required to win elections and behave accordingly. If voters want a different kind of politician, they would do well to a) reject negative campaigning, b) insist on campaign finance reform, and c) educate themselves about current affairs. These changes would improve the quality of our democracy far more than electing an anti-politician politician like Trump.

What Iowa needs is a casino.
Then people wouldn't have to go to see Trump.
Then people wouldn't have to go to see Trump.
3
We have several, but thanks. Both Indian and corporate casinos too. We even have indoor plumbing.
5
Just do a simple Google search.
"Illegal immigration facts"
Lots of information.
The impartial sources contradict most of Trump's fantasies.
Time to wake up people the guy is rare accurate with his "facts." But you're a Trump person and accuracy is second to style. Good luck picking a plumber!
That's what happens when the brain is not connected to the mouth.

As opposed to prevaricating about everything for decades?

All the made up lies are there to justify the hatred being espoused. Hating is the most important fact for this group of people following Trump.
Trump just threw the anchor of Univision out of his presser, then lied that he was "Out of control" and yelling (He was not) Reporters are questioning him on why he did this. This will be HUGE!
3
I just saw it too, and I'd report it quite differently. The questioner was rude and argumentative, interrupting Trump frequently. Trump simply moved on to the next questioner.
5
Trump is the great white hope.He promises some vague return to greatness like a bible-belt snake oil salesman preacher( are there any other kind) . I think that he thought he would do it to ad to his curriculum-vite, why not? But power is very corrupting.Somewhere between the cases of final-net and Mirror mirror on the wall skit, he decided he was for real. The same delusional white old or left behind masses that supported Sarah Palin now hitch there hopes to his 747. Perhaps history shall fool us all, and we shall have a Trump v Saunders debate.
8
Why is Trump leading in the GOP POLLS? Simple. The People are fed up with politicians. They are lying do-nothing's who drift with whatever the big money tide flows. They have no problem changing their minds on issues every 24 hours. And, if President Obama discovered a cure for cancer, they would attack him for being anti- big Pharmaceutical companies. The people finally understand that all those NO votes without any alternatives, hurt Republican voters just as much as everyone else.
And in fairness, if there was a Liberal version of Trump, he/she would be leading the Dem polls now too. The people are just tired of what politics has become in this Country.

28
Does it speak more poorly of the GOP that he's a front runner or more poorly on us as a nation?
He's clearly not serious about being president, there's no such thing as bad publicity but corner him and get him to lay out policy rather than trite one-liners and we'll see how serious he is.

Has the current Mrs. Trump joined Mr. Trump at these campaign appearances. I've seen over and over the video of Mr. Trump's daughter on the escalator before Mr. Trump's declaring his candidacy, but cannot remember seeing Mrs. Trump.
Will The New York Times be interviewing the lady?

Expressing his frustration with a GOP-controlled Congress, Trump supporters says: “We haven’t put any points on the board. I was determined to do something different.” In so saying, this supporter exposes just how naive he is. A president proposes, a Congress disposes. Does this fellow not know even that? Never mind it's Trump he's talking about. It could be any presidential candidate of either party. We Americans seem to believe that if only we elect the right "hero" or "heroine" for president, all will be well. Sorry, but American Democracy is so much more messy, slow, and maddening. That's why it is good to look for experience, especially in running bureaucracies. Either Bush or Clinton at least have that.
4
Let me guess; you voted for the least qualified candidate ever in Obama.
2
It annoys him when he is not the center of attention and this is the only way he can it now that he is off the air. Its about polishing the Trump trademark that he licenses. He is not campaigning but having tantrums with the added joy of a democrat agent sabotaging the republican party.
3
Rman is dead on. Trump, like a certain Bush was "born on third base and thinks he hit a triple." It would be one thing if he were as decorously unattached to political correctness as he is. But if we wake up with him as president in November 2016 I cant imagine he'll find all the bright people he'll need just dying to sign on to work for a guy with no manners, and an ego that enjoys saying "You're Fired." He's going to come across a lot of situations of which he knows not a whit, and we've already enough non-studious and socially detached presidents to last a generation.
13
Thank you. Can you imagine Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump in the same room. We'd have to learn to duck and cover all over again.
6
Sorry to burst your bubble, but on CNN today, it was mentioned that Trump treats his employees very well and they are all fiercely loyal to him. I don't think he will have a problem finding more bright people to work for him.
The NY Tmes just does not get it. If open borders was so popular, Trump wouldn't be so high in the polls.
9
He is high in the polls because he appeals to the core Republicans who consist of angry, ignorant white male bullies.
Just look at the picture. A bunch of white guys with sunglasses and the only minority in the frame is security.
No thank you. I'd rather have Justin Bieber as president.

10
Mags the border has been open for a while. Decades actually. Don't see the demise of the United States from them. On the other end those who understand the movement of money have not done us any favours.
5
To be the highest among Republican primary voters is not "so high in the polls." Trump not only will not be president but his racist stand on immigration probably will assure a Democrat win the White House.

A lot of these postings are anti-Trump, no big surprise, however these anti-Trump readers should look through the field and they should ask themselves the following questions:
1. Are these other candidates professional politicians who have been in place for years and still allowed the mess our country is in to happen on their watch.
2. How many of the candidates have created jobs that don't require the public till to finance.
3. Who among the candidates is speaking the language of the people
4. Do we really need re-runs from our recent past, ( i.e.: Clinton-Bush )
5. Whom do you really believe could get something done, the parliamentarian or the business man.
So lets not get our hair ( no pun intended) up in a tizzy, lets see how this shakes out in the long run.
Go Donald

1. Reality check: governing is a politician's game. You cannot get anything done without knowing how to influence other people. It is not about bashing or bullying; it is about persuading and convincing and it requires finesse and people skills.
2. How many of these candidates have been rent collectors responsible for outing poor people? Um, your boy Trump. We had great job creation under the Clintons and under Obama/Biden. Oh, and Trump declared bankruptcy. Thrice.
3. If the language of the people includes insulting women, gays, minorities and the such then we have a way bigger problem than Trump, because newsflash, THOSE ARE THE PEOPLE. Angry, ignorant white males may move the needle in the Republican primary but they are but a mere blip in the national electorate. The ability to call everyone "STUPID" and "UNFAIR" is the language of a tween, and hopefully not the language of the average man.
4. Prefer a re-run to a bufoon.
5. See #1
I will get my hair in a tizzy so long as I see our electorate process turned into a joke. I absolutely get into a tizzy at the idea of my trying to explain to my children why the very concepts I teach them (no bullying, cheating, lying or insulting) are somehow okay for the leader of the free world. I will get offended when a candidate for office refers to women as nothign more than arm candy, hags, or witches.
And guess what? I am one of the people too.

Trump. Reminds me of the day Saddam Hussein's statue was toppled. A former CIA operative actually came out and said publicly, 'How many of those throwing shoes are being paid to do so?'
How many are being subsidised to show up at a Trump rally?
Charge Mexico for building a wall. Mexico is not land locked.

You think Trump is the real thing? You think he has a chance for the nomination? You love his message: "I am rich. I am very smart. Everyone is stupid. Deport 13 million. Build a big wall. Tax China."
Think again.
Think again.
18
Sounds like the old 9-11!I guess that is still owned by Americas Mayor.
I don't know where did you get it.
I should ask you link.. or never happened.
Yes, Trump is rich and smart, I bet, he is rather smarter than all the old trouts, taking part in this race

Trump is now seen as a legitimate politician who hires the best that money can buy like all the more properly electable, conventional Republicans. Still, Trump,if elected, will probably be President who won with the thinnest political portfolios of experience in Washington's history.

Democrats would make him a one term dictator...
Enough already. It's only August of 2015. Iowa Caucus isn't even for another 5 months. It's like picking a World Series Champion halfway through training camp.
8
To go along. The Blue Jays and the top three from the National League Central are doing well.
Some how San Francisco is not finished.
Some how San Francisco is not finished.
2
The nonstop rush by the mainstream media to force Donald Trump out of the 2016 race has failed. Despite the gnashing of teeth by Obama supporters witnessing the end of his presidency (i.e. our long national nightmare) Trump is building a ground game in the crucial early caucus state of Iowa.
If he runs his political organization the way he runs Trump Inc., this could get really interesting.

14
I think you are jumping the gun in declaring victory here. We haven't even gotten to the Iowa Caucus yet. It's like declaring your team the World Series Champion half way through training camp.
8
Seriously? A lawyer, an educated person with knowledge of the Constitution, who looks forward a Donald Trump presidency and who sees the Obama presidency as a "long national nightmare"? Oh wait - you must have placed an extra "r" in your user name...
21
If you think the Obama presidency has been our "...long national nightmare" I'm wondering how you would describe eight years of George W. Bush: two wars, one of which has turned out to be the longest in American history, one unfunded, both costing trillions of dollars, thousands of American military personnel either killed or left with devastating injuries, untold numbers of Iraqi and Afghanistan civilians killed and the worst financial melt-down in US history other than the Great Depression.
23
If you want a preview, in a microcosm, of a Trump presidency, look into the recent Rob Ford Mayoralty of Toronto, a city larger than Chicago. Rob Ford was born of privilege, is very bombastic and has a mouth with no control. He promised the unsupportable and produced urban planning off the cuff on the back of a napkin. The angry, low-information voters loved him. Unfortunately, Toronto got more congested, expensive and low-ridership public transportation infrastructure came to the fore. And, Toronto became an international laughing stock. Now Torontonians are trying to recover from this debacle.
79
Here is a major difference to consider; Trump does not drink nor does he do drugs.
4
WELL PUT only I would throw in a little Third Reich's too given what he wants to do to 11 million people.....
3
Trump is clearly more intelligent than Ford. The latter is a law-and-order substance abuser (try to reconcile that) who led a confederacy of dunces. Trump is a smart operator beholden to no one...
4
While I think that this Donald Trump phenomenon is fueled by a strong distaste for the establishment, I also think that his success can be attributed to the effects of reality television on the general population. The American Psychological Association published a study back in 2013 detailing the "Snooki Effect;" which is essentially a theory that those who heavily view reality television shows are more likely to believe the heightened theatrics they see are a reflection of real life behavior.
Many people are used to seeing the bombastic Donald on his reality show, "The Apprentice" so it's likely that his supporters attribute his personal success to his style of conducting business on television. Donald Trump knows the power of reality TV and he's capitalizing on it. He even hired Tana Goertz, a reality show alum as well, to help with his campaign. This guy knows how easily people can be manipulated and he's giving them the exact show that they want. The sad thing is that most of his supporters can't see through his charade of inconsistencies despite his inability to provide a single, concrete plan on how to achieve any of the ideas that he's touting.

I agree with your assessment, and it scares me for the future of our country.
10
Perhaps, people see a man of proven accomplishments unlike the mystery man whose only paying job was as counsel to ACORN and who has yet to provide any documentation as to his past.
Pop psychology aside, Trump is no Manchurian candidate, rather a man whose life and every move is open for all to see.

I am not a big Obama fan, but what on earth does it mean when you say that he "has yet to provide any documentation as to his past"?
3
You liberal folks just don't get it. Trump is here for the duration of the primary season. He's not going to go away because he offends your sense of probity. He doesn't care what you think and he's got money. He is the opposite of the usual, vanilla, bought-and-paid-for politician (e.g.., Clinton/Bush) that the two parties foist on us. Therein lies his huge appeal.
His swaggering telegenic confidence, and his spine-of-steel takes no guff from news puppets, lobbyists, and party elders endears him to blue collar workers, and his straight talk about the impact of massive illegal immigration has swayed independents like myself, while also enjoying what was initially "protest" support from Republican loyalists, many of whom have now been mesmerized into his fold.
Bravely exploiting the plague of illegal immigration, to the bane of establishment dems & repubs, he has tapped into one of the primary components of our national economic plight, and has thereby single handedly shaped the debate and taken control of his destiny.
Donald Trump is brash, narcissistic and crude but he is definitely not embarrassing because he doesn't try to be anything that he is not. What is embarrassing are party establishments and northeast elites that think the electorate will still accept an entitled, monied, ice cold serial liar who is the subject of a current FBI investigation, or an entitled, monied, colorless scion of his party's most disastrous presidential family.
Rock on Donald!

Bottom line is that over 50% of people say there is no way on earth that they would vote for The Donald. Those people will go to vote against him if he runs.
How do you win under those cicumstances?
Another point: the Donald has about 25% of the Republican vote. The other 75% is split 16 ways (averege about 5% each). When the field is cut down to three, The Donald will be in third place. Wait and see.

I am not sure if I should be amused or scared. It was supposed to be Clinton vs Bush/Rubio, but it could turn out to be Trump vs Sanders. The latter could not be more mismatched in terms of personalities.
2
If Beyonce parked her bus in a parking lot they'd come for her too. That doesn't mean people would vote for her for president.
I think the media outlets are missing the point. There are a vast number of people who just want to come see the celebrity. And it's in many of the discussions with attendees. The Press however, never seems to highlight how many are there to see The Celebrity Apprentice and how many are there to see the next President of the United States.

And the Iowa caucus is scheduled for over five full months from now. This prolonged campaign season feels like pulling a bandaid t h i s s l o w l y .
10
Well, I've got news for Jeff Roe, Ted Cruz's campaign manager. The family values movement is a show, too. So it's his show against Donald Trump's show. I think that is why the others are losing. They believe they have something of intrinsic value, when it's simply showmanship. And they aren't as good at it as is Donald Trump.
Were I an aspiring GOP presidential candidate, I would be more concerned about a Trump organization in Iowa than of Donald Trump himself. As Trip Gabriel's informative article tells us, candidates hoped that Trump would disappear, but if Trump overcomes the difficulty of pulling these supporters in, he could win in Iowa, and in NH. And I think he'll get SC. So where are the other candidates after that?

Let me play devil's advocate to all the Trump bashers who dismiss him as a flamboyant attention seeking jerk.
That may be true, but what is also true is that he graduated from Wharton, founded and built a company that employees tens of thousands of people, has built up a real estate portfolio worth billions of dollars, written several best-selling books, created a number of world-class golf resorts and starred in one of the most successful and profitable television shows of the last decade.
Nobody can accomplish any of that without leadership skills, street smarts, a tremendous work ethic, a ver high EQ and IQ, extremely high standards, excellent negotiating skills and a very deep knowledge of finance.
Has Scott Walker or Rand Paul or any of those other mediocrities accomplished even 1 one thousandth as much?

Trump inherited money. He's declared bankruptcy multiple times. If you want to watch him as entertainment, that's fine. If you want to patronize his businesses go ahead. Nothing you mentioned makes him a good candidate for President.
43
I agree with everything you said. Thank you for sharing this
4
Trump inherited money, sure. But by the same token, Hillary "inherited" political notoriety & good fortune from Bill. Honestly, if not for Bill, Hillary would be President of the most efficient school board in some suburb in the mid-west somewhere.
How much would Trump or Hillary have accomplished on their own? Who knows?
How much would Trump or Hillary have accomplished on their own? Who knows?

The whole process is broken. The electoral college is stupid and outdated. One person's vote means nothing. When a place like Iowa can demand attention, pretending it is the voice of the US, it says that we don't live in a United States. Let them eat corn dogs.
83
We don't demand attention - we don't have to. The media and candidates are more than happy to provide it. And we speak for Iowa, not for America - the same way Vermonters speak for Vermont, if they're as inclined to participate in the process as Iowans are.
And what's a corn dog?
And what's a corn dog?
I need to see a certified Birth Certificate before I can consider voting for Mr. Trump. With his hair and other factors, he is obviously not an American and is not eligible to run for President.
44
Not American, not Earthling. Talk about aliens.
10
“Transforming that into caucus support is going to be the heavy lift.”
Quite so. If the Trump campaign wants to be more than a mildly amusing side show come February, his staff must find a substantive policy platform. Remaining censorious to his opponents, and repeating, "I want to make America great again", will all too soon wear thin.

I have a suggestion for a candidate slogan: 'Make America Great Again by Not Voting For Donald Trump.'
It's great, couldn't be better, I like it and so does everyone else, it's got the finest sloganeering slogan and everybody says so, and it's got a lot of buzz.

Excuse me? A poll out today has New Hampshire voters - you know, that state to your north - liking Trump over his next closest competitor 35% to 11%. That's a bigger lead than he has in Iowa. Or are you anxious to criticize Granite Staters too?

Peddler! Right here in River City! With a capital P and that rhymes with T and that stands for Trump.

Trump is an entertainer. People may tune in to read / hear about his latest antics but nobody really wants him to be elected!
And all this press coverage of his every move is of course stoking his his narcissism!
And all this press coverage of his every move is of course stoking his his narcissism!
11
Speak for yourself he has my vote
7
That what you are,can speak for me
It's embarrassing to our country that Trump is polling so well. If I made the decision, Trump supporters would be ineligible to vote due to their lack of serious consideration of the issues and their acceptance of Trump's painfully shallow standing on crucial issues.
27
And it is good that the decisions is not up to you. We do live in a democratic society do you know?
10
I don't like Trump either, but making his supporters ineligible to vote sounds like the Republican strategy for winning elections.
3
"Shallow standing on crucial issues" should be the slogan on all GOP literature. You can't single out Trump for that.
4
I've no doubt that Trump is tapping into the disdain that so many feel toward politicians. He gets to state, on a national stage, what people say in their living rooms every day (hopefully not about women.) It's as if he is nothing more than a proxy for a large portion of the electorate.
Trump is tired and you can see it in his photos including the one in this article. He will not stand up to the rigors of a full-court presidential campaign if this is how he looks now. Either way, he will run his course and then begin an independent campaign drawing critical votes away from Bush and Rubio, the only two real contenders.
Rock on, Donald, as you are the surest path to a victory for the Democrats. And do me one favor - admit that your dad gave you all that money and all those buildings in Brooklyn, Queens and in the city as your legacy. Were it not for him you wouldn't have gone very far, so give him some credit instead of acting like you're a self-made man!

Woman talk about men to,so why play the blame game
What does a billionaire know about the average American ? Nothing ! I don't care what he says or promise gullible voters.
4
You have to ask? I guess because this man doesn't call women "pigs", "bimbos" or comment on this menstrual cycles. That might be ok with you but the women I've spoken with resent it and I agree with them. So that's why.
1
Mr. Trump knows he cannot offer anything of value in exchange for a vote, right?
5
Maybe someone should tell Hillary
1
I'm sure Hillary explained it to him: "No direct contributions, but speaking fees are fine." "You can't take cash, but donations to a spouse's foundation from mining oligarchs are OK." "Technically, you can't charge a giant bank like UBS a fee for clearing the way for a financially advantageous approval from the State Dept., but it's fine to ask them to make a contribution to your husband's foundation." "Literally, you are not supposed to charge a fee for granting pardons, but it's OK to give them in exchange for a Hasidic rabbi agreeing to throw his political support to your spouse, like with the New Square case."
5
Being frustrated with 'politics as usual' is one thing, but Trump's following is equating celebrity with leadership and business with governance. Washington has many problems, both from officials and from campaign sponsorship, but The Donald (and his half-cooked 'solutions') is a different mess, not the answer.
62
"Equating celebrity with leadership and business with governance"
A rather broad statement that may be true or false or correct or incorrect or....what exactly. Perhaps the Times pickers could explain, as the implied self-evident wisdom of the statement escapes me. Nor do I understand why I should accept that Trump supporters think whatever you say they think.
There is celebrity in leadership and business in governance. Do you agree?

Good afternoon maryjanesue and Excellency,
To try to address your respective concerns - while no, I am not running myself, I am a voter and see candidates I prefer to Trump. Being involved with and selective about an election is a right without being a politician myself. And certainly, you are likewise entitled to vote your preference. And while I cannot speak on behalf of the referenced 'Times Pickers,' I speak for myself, not because of a sense of 'wisdom,' but because I like to converse with others. Assess my opinions as you wish. I would say that the celebrity from a record of leadership is not synonymous with that of reality TV. The business in governance is also not synonymous, because leaders have to work with other branches, no "You're fired!"-type actions. Thank you both for taking the time to reply to my post. Best regards.

Nothing Trump has done and is doing is peculiar. Just different, which is after all, what this country needs. People are sick and tired of politicians dressing a pile of horse manure as chocolate cake. We ought to pay more attention to Trump and look through what he can offer this country which in my opinion is plenty.

I'm sorry this makes no sense. Trump doesn't actually have any kind of workable policies. Why would anyone vote for someone based on fairy tales and wishful thinking?
Do you really think it isn't peculiar for a Presidential candidate to talk about how they appeal to women because they are so good looking?

I looked on his campaign website and he has exactly one (1) issue statement under his "positions" category. I've heard him say some stuff about trade, too, but I don't think he understands how exactly international trade negotiations work (or at least there's no evidence that he does).
So, what else does he offer? Unhinged twitter battles with Megyn Kelly? Is that what we need? How will it help to hoist this spoiled lout to the highest office in the land? How on earth can you trust a devious real estate magnate to do anything positive for this country?

Here-here.
so much for the idea that Trump "isn't going to put his own money into the race" - strong field operations aren't cheap. This might be a more serious run than people are giving him credit for.

Haters want to judge, but my question to you is what can you bring to the table you have money to run or are you all talk. He has my vote

So far, with all his 'alarmist' nonsense, he hasn't had to spend much on media coverage cuz the media are on him like flies on manure!

The fact that trump is a serious candidate unfortunately proves that a large segment of the populous is unqualified to take part in the democratic process.

This is sadly true.

Talking down to people in an elitist manner will get them angrier and just encourage them to consider somebody like Trump. This is not the old USSR where you can vote so long it is for the party that espouses only my beliefs and opinions. Trump may not be the most desirable but right now is the most successful in going from "no chance" to "good chance". Bernie Sanders has also surprised people but in large part that may be because his main rival, Hillary Clinton", is beginning to look like 'damaged merchandise". to many potential voters.

It does explain, however, how unscrupulous used car salesmen are able to make a living.
