In the end it's just about money. No different here. Certainly he has family money. He wants more and will go wherever he can get it. It won't be the Yankees.

Remember, the kid is already richer than god. He should max his talent and sign with a team other than he cranked. Mets?
Is dad teaching him the cutter? Where did he go to highschool?
Times?

Hey, thanks for writing. The article concludes with the younger Mariano saying he's decided to take a pass on learning the cutter. Some things, I guess, can't be duplicated.

Mariano III went to Iona Prep.

Just for the PR of it I would think he'd be of high value to the Yankees if they think he has any chance of making the bigs. He'd be worth double in Yankee stadium as anywhere else.

What a nice story. Baseball needs more stories like this, another Griffey or Manning type of story, and who better to be the dad than Mo', someone even us Red Sox fans like.

Good luck to Mariano III. Hope to see you in the ALCS soon.

Would love to see him succeed big time in the Majors.

I applaud the family for valuing a college degree along with sports smarts.

Not surprising to read that he is among the better athletes on his team. The senior Rivera was often cited as the Yankees best all-around athlete.

He looks exactly like Mo!

Would love to see my Twins draft him, we can use a guy like him. He does look a lot like his father in several ways!!

If some team drafts him AFTER the Yankees have had at least one chance to get him (even if in round one), and he turns out to be half the pitcher his old man was, perhaps Cashman and the scouting crew need to go collect their social security and stop wasting the Yankees precious futures. The writer gave you fair notice. DRAFT THE KID AS SOON AS YOU CAN. What more do you need to know ???
Shiva (SFO)
The writer has said top five rounds, not the first round. I would be super shocked if Yankees used their first round picks to sign Mo-III. Granted that he is vastly improved, but he is still not considered 1st round pick. The Yankees draft relatively higher this year compared to what they have been doing in recent past (last time they drafted this high was 13th in 1993). A reasonable expectation would be for the Yankees to target him 3rd round at 92nd pick, but if they are worried that he might not be available that long, they may take a flyer on him at 57th in the second round. Anything earlier is a reach.

How can he not try to emulate the most dominant pitch in baseball history?

Man, the resemblance in his delivery is uncanny!

The Yanks should lock him up fast...just in case!

And even if he has 1/1000th of the talent Mo had, presumably he inherited the work ethic and general attitude of Mo, one of the last Yanks I loved to root for...
Bob DiNardo (New York)
I included Mo in MLB's "Franchise Four" survey of fans, along with fellow Yankees Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio (thus excluding Mickey Mantle), so the thought of his son trying to follow in those footsteps leaves me feeling dread: remember Dale Berra?
Laura (California)
Nice to see he chose to graduate from college. Promising attitude.
MSP (minneapolis)
Agreed! I wish him all the best and I hope he gets that degree and moves on to the MLB after that- I will be rooting for him! Way to go, MO!

Your parents must be so proud of you!

Reading about this kid in this article - Mariano Rivera III sound like he could be one of those rare sons of Legendary Players, who can either match or even eclipse their Father's achievements, when they turn Pro and as a fan, it sounds exciting.

Already the kid knows what he wants to do and how to do it, without much input from the senior Rivera - that speaks volumes on the potential.

I look forward to Mariano Rivera III's name being announced in a MLB ballpark as a player - hopefully, a Yankee, like his father.
