You were always secret-sly
(Up to subtle trickin') --
If only foxes were as "dumb" as you,
Gold would be worth its weight in chicken!

Happy Birthday to a Yankee mainstay and legend! I've often gone to the fork in the road and taken it. Greatest Yankee catcher ever; one of the greatest in baseball. Grew up watching him. Happy 90th!.
Skip P. (Marietta, GA)
A most Happy 90th Birthday Yogi! I grew up with the 60 s Yankees and you were my favorite. You are the mold from which all the great hitting catchers are made.
Howard Weinstein (Elkridge, MD)
Belated happy birthday to the great Yogi Berra!

More than a Yankees icon, even people who couldn't care less about baseball know who Yogi Berra is. Because of his many famous quotations, it's hard to think of Yogi without smiling -- though it may be easy to forget what a wonderful baseball player he was.

His refusal to engage with his beloved Yankees after an undeserved firing as manager by George Steinbrenner showed Yogi's steel, backbone and integrity. His willingness to forgive once Steinbrenner belatedly apologized showed Yogi's class.

Thank you, Yogi...we love you!
Roger Cohen (Lancaster PA)
Tim McCarver said it best during a broadcast game some years back: The man's a national treasure.
Stan Kaplan (Bethesda, MD)
Happy birthday to a class act!

Before there was Yo * da * , there was Yo * gi * : not for nothing have you been called "the Yogi Berra of baseball"!
Your skill and your whimsy ennobled the game you graced.
Happy Birthday!

Last player to hit 30 Home Runs while striking out less than 30 times FOR A SEASON. What an accomplishment. These young guys strike out about 30 times a week. The best bad ball hitter ever. Happy Birthday Mr Berra!

Let me first say that as a very young Brooklyn Dodger fan, I "hated" Yogi and all the Yankees. He broke my heart in 1956 when he slugged 2 home runs in game 7 that helped beat my beloved Bums.

Over the years I came to appreciate Yogi's great skills and to respect his integrity. He is a Yankee in the classic mold of the great ones before him. Happy Birthday, Yogi. I wish you many more years.

Happy Birthday all year long, Yogi,
Much love and thanks for lots of treasured Yankees Baseball memories.

Wishing one of the best of the greatest generation a very happy 90th birthday and thank you for giving all of us so many wonderful memories and lots of laughs.

Though not a fan of the Yankees, I totally respect Yogi Berra and marvel at the remarkable playing career he enjoyed in the two decades after World War II. The man had a career that will never be repeated because at this point, with 30 teams playing and the playoffs extended to a wild card game plus 2 rounds before the World Series, no player will ever again win 10 World Series with one club over a period of 18 seasons (1946-63) as Berra did.

People do forget that he was also a very good manager, in fact one of only 7 managers ever to win pennants in both leagues (1964 with Yankees, 1973 with Mets). Berra accomplished all this as a player and manager before turning 50 years old in 1975.

And not being a Yankees fan, for what it's worth I always enjoy watching Bill Mazeroski's home run sailing over Berra's head in left field to end Game 7 of the 1960 World Series and win that series for the Pirates.

Yogi! He drove me crazy by hitting what must be the all-time record for "foul" homers, those screamers down the right field line that curved just foul, but of course he hit plenty that stayed fair. Favorite Yogi moments: When he dropped a foul pop hit by Ted Williams that would have been the final out in an Allie Reynolds no-hitter, but then caught another one hit by Williams that was a more difficult play to complete the no-no. Second favorite, watching him jump into Don Larsen's lap at the end of the perfect game in 1956. Thanks for the wonderful memories, Mr. Lawrence Peter Berra.

What's so often forgotten in conversations about Yogi is what a phenomenally talented and fiery player he really was. Today, he's often celebrated for his wonderful spirit, his generosity, his humor. And that's as it should be. But let's remember that, in his prime, the man was a gritty, find-a-way-to-win champion. Like the one and only Stan Musial, Yogi was a good guy who often finished first. Happy birthday to a great American -- from a lifelong Cards fan!
Mike (Providence, RI)
Yogi, A cent'anni!

Happy Birthday! I just want to thank everyone who made this day necessary!!
David Scardino (San Pedro, CA)
Best bad ball hitter I ever saw and always best in the clutch. Hope he has as many more birthdays as he wants.

As a lifelong Red Sox fan, I wish Yogi the happiest of birthday wishes. Live long and prosper dude.

We all know you won those rings and awards too, Yogi.

God bless, and Happy B'Day!!
Bronx Boychik (Central Oregon)
Happy Birthday Yogi; Growing up in the Bronx you were my favorite Yankee and baseball idol - I even became a Catcher because of you! And you have always stayed true to the game and its spirit and exemplified what is best about it. Many happy returns and many happy memories.
Pete G (Arlington VA)
Great to see Yogi reach his 90th birthday in style and surrounded by family.

In an era where the Yankees pass around "legend" status and number-retirement ceremonies like a large bowl of popcorn, Lawrence Peter Berra is the rarer real deal.

He deserves the Presidential Medal of Freedom along with that other New York-launched star, the still-working-since-1950 Vin Scully, the greatest baseball broadcaster ever.
Paul Altruda (Katy, TX)
Happy Birthday Yogi. I was born in The Bronx when you started playing for the Yankees and remember seeing you play in the old Yankee Stadium many times.
Irv Skolnick (Pompton Lakes, NJ)
Happy Birthday, Yogi!!! I am a veteran of 15 Heroes in Pinstripes fantasy camps. On the occasion of my 10th consecutive camp I told Yogi of the milestone. He said to me, "You mean in a row?" Yes, Yogi that's what consecutive generally means. There's a "Yogism" for your birthday, Yog.. Hope you enjoyed the day and I wish you good health and many more.

The Colonel (Boulder, CO)
The best birthday present The Colonel can possibly give Larry "Yoga" Berra is to ask the thieves of his museum trophies to please return them to the museum from which they stole them = no questions will be asked. -The Colonel

Happy Birthday!!! Many happy more - and much good health!
TomL (Connecticut)
Happy Birthday to a very generous and good man. A few years ago, Yogi was a featured speaker for a children's health clinic in New Haven. Like many speakers at such charitable events, he was paid a fee. However, Yogi then donated his fee back to the clinic. While Yogi was a great ball player, what really makes him special is that he is a great person.
Ultraliberal (New Jersy)
Happy Birthday Yogi,
In an era of deflated footballs, spit balls, Corked bats, Steroids and God knows what else is going on to besmirch sports, We desperately need more Yogi's..
Jim Gattari (Anaheim, CA.)
Buon Compleano! Cento Anni. Grew up listening to Yankee baseball on the radio in Rome NY in the 50's. Baseball at its best. Had the pleasure of playing golf with Yogi in Palm Dessert, CA. when he was 78. Mark Twain, Will Rogers and Yogi Berra, true American humorist. Thanks for the memories.
CJH (Washington, DC)
Happy birthday, Yogi! On one of my first trips to spring training as a young teenager, you were in the dugout signing autographs. It was very crowded so I just reached towards the side of the dugout with baseball in hand. I couldn't even see you. A fellow Yankee fan helped pass my baseball down, and when he gave it back to me, it had your autograph on it. It was a pretty magical moment to know you were so nearby yet just out of sight. Thank you for that autograph and for being such a treasure to Yankee fans and Americans in general. We love you!
Philip Berroll (New York, NY)
The first baseball game I ever attended was at the old Yankee Stadium in 1964. Yogi was the Yankees' manager that year (he would take them to the 7th game of the World Series before being unjustly fired, just as he was more than two decades later). At one point, he came charging out of the dugout to furiously argue an umpire's call -- I don't recall whether he was ejected, but he certainly could have been.

This is something many people have never realized about Yogi. We tend to think of him as a low-key, laid back personality; but as any number of teammates and opponents could attest, he was a fierce competitor who could always dial up the intensity when the occasion called for it.

Happy birthday, Yogi. For so many of us, you'll always be an MVP.
Guido Rossi (Cuggiono, Italy)
Happy Birthday, Yogi!
I don't know why, but the article completely miss that during that very same ceremony, yesterday, the honorary citizenship of Cuggiono (Italy) along with the city's key were conferred to Yogi: in fact his father Pietro and mother Paolina were from my hometown, Cuggiono. We are honored to be the Italian home of baseball legend Yogi Berra!

Yo-gi!. . . Yo-gi!. . .Yo-gi!

(Chanted in typical Yankee Stadium cadence.)

One of the greatest players--and greatest guys--ever to play the game. I hope his museum gets so crowded that nobody goes there anymore.

Happy birthday, Mr. Berra!

Yogi Berra is at the center of so much that is great about the history of this great game. He was a dominant player in an era of dominant players, baseball's Golden Age, when New York City was the center of all things baseball.
Lani Mulholland (San Francisco)
Dear dear Yogi, it's a good thing you are having a birthday. Otherwise we wouldn't know how old we are. Happy days forever.

Happy Birthday, Yogi. You're a class act.

Yogi was one of the greatest Yankees of the twentieth century. I was going into a shower after playing golf at Montclair C.C. several years ago. Yogi was coming out naked. I asked him, "yogi where are your pinstripes ?". He smiled and walked on.
Rajesh (SDQ NYC MAA)
Happy Birthday, Yogi! And many, many more! You have represented this game we all love so much better than anyone, and made so many people happy with your quips and quotes. You are a treasure!

You ain't older till you're older, Yogi. Stick around a little longer, please, because it gets late early 'round here.

Nonsecquitars aside, Lorenzo Pietro Berra is more than a National Treasure! Our Baseball Grandfather came to the fork in the road and took our hearts.
Michael Muscaro (NYC)
Happy Birthday Yogi! #1 in our hearts!
Gary (Oklahoma)
Happy Birthday, Yogi. I remember watching you play, but I remember more the animated YooHoo commercial of you climbing the left field foul pole to make a catch. Wishing you many more.
Jon Silverberg (Brooklyn)
Happy belated birthday, Yogi...sorry I missed your 90th by a day...I was running a golf tournament, an activity I know you would approve of...your career and life have been a great inspiration...your drive, perseverance and ability were a major factor in maintaining the Yankee dynasty, and your good humor and friendliness have won you a legion of friends and fans over the decades...to many more happy birthdays...
Matt Guest (Washington, D. C.)
Happy Birthday, to one of baseball's greatest ambassadors and most feared batters in the clutch. Berra was one of the easiest great players to root for in major league history and one of the best catchers of all time. It was awful to learn that his awards and rings had been stolen, but with any luck they will be returned to the museum. They belong to the Berras and hopefully someone, somewhere will do the right thing very soon.
Len (NJ)
Happy Birthday Yogi!

Happy Birthday Mr. Berra!

Yankees have several "Kings." With WS 10 rings and 3 MVP crowns Yogi, who I saw play when I was a kid, may be the Yankee "King of Kings." Certainly up their with the 1st tier all time greats Ruth, Gehrig, Ford, DiMaggio, Dickey, Mantle, Rivera, Jeter.
A living legend. Baseball, and certainly the Yankees, should have him to as many games as possible.
Happy Birthday "King" Yogi.
Susan (New York)
Happy Birthday, Yogi! You're my favorite philosopher.
Boney (Wyckoff, NJ)
Yogi, you've had a wonderful life. A great hitter, catcher, manager, coach, father, husband and you're national treasure. A worldwide icon for "sweetness" and humility. Congratulations on your milestone birthday and many more to follow. "It ain't over 'till it's over."
Jacksonian Democrat (Seattle)
Lawrence Peter Berra, I am 33 years your junior and I was a Yankee fan for your entire career. I remember walking through the tunnel into the old Yankee Stadium to watch you and the other legends play on that beautiful field. I remember you and Joe Garagiola coming to speak at a Cub Scout dinner in my hometown. i remember your YooHoo commercials and loving the taste of that childhood memory. So for all those things and so much more I wish you a very happy 90th birthday. As long as baseball is played in New York the name Yogi Berra will be remembered with love.
Kathleen Tresser (Placerville, CA)
Happy Birthday Mr. Berra - you always make me smile!
Jeff Carter (Baltimore)
Thanks Yogi for giving my father Solomon and I so many great memories as Yankee fans. Happy Birthday.
Dr. Don R. Mueller (NY)
Happy B-day Yogi. Have a pizza pie. When the pizza chef asked Yogi if he wanted his pie cut into 4 or 8 slices, Yogi replied, “You better make it 4, because I could never eat 8.”
Howard G (New York)
Back in the 1950's - I spent the first eight years of my life living in the "shadow" of Yankee Stadium - up on the hills of Woodycrest and Anderson Avenues.

Back in those days, most games were played in the daytime - starting at around 2:00 PM in the afternoon - and then there would be the "Five O'clock Thunder" as we could hear the faint roar in the distance, of the crowds who were accustomed to the Yankees winning most of the time...

Yogi Berra was one of the first Yankees of whom I became aware - and I was fortunate enough to actually see him catch a game pitched by Whitey Ford before we left the Bronx for the suburban pastures of Westchester County in the fall of 1959 -

Not only is Yogi Berra a legend - but he remains a living beacon for many who have been Yankee fans all their
lives...

Besides birthday wishes - the only present I can offer Yogi on his 90th birthday is gratitude -- which I do with all sincerity -

Happy Birthday Yogi...and Thank You -
Peter Beck (Fresno, CA)
Happy 90th Mr. Berra! You are a national treasure. May you have many more!

Thank you for being who you are!
Happy, happy birthday!

Happy birthday, Mr. Berra! I don't know if you've ever been to the Philippines. But if you have to get there: you swim out over the Pacific Ocean, and when you get to the fork around Guam, you take it.

Yogi,

We here in the Bay Area wish you a happy, joyous 90th!

I grew up in the Bronx in the 1950-1960' Yankee era. Yogi sold clothing and Yoo-Hoo in the off season and was a familiar face around town. During one game in 1957 Yogi tossed baseballs into the crowd lining the wall above the old bullpen. I still remember his smile and playful enjoyment of being a Yankee. I hope he knows how much he mean to NY and to the game.
Larry Eisenberg (New York City)
To a phrase maker extrordinaire,
My hat is high up in the air,
A Steinbrenner tamer
And great Hall-of-Famer,
Happy Birthday and be free from care!
