Michael Powell reports. The gladiator society is his subject. Our children are in focus.

Or are they?

Can bettors sue Pacquiao for concealing his shoulder injury before the fight?

36 -38yrs old is considered an old man? What is 60-100 considered?

For me, boxing is rumbling...a fight between a man vs a man, not a boy vs a boy...

Manny fight like a man..a warrior..he might even be killed in a boxing bout like Marquez did but he fought like a man...

Mayweather fought like a boy..he ran..he hugged his opponents...he clinched..he ran again...he is not even a warrior. He is afraid to lose. It is too boring to watch him fighting in the ring...IT IS SPORT...it needs physical contact more since boxing is a fighting sports...

Thus, in the children's quarrel, Floyd wins but in real fight of a man, Manny wins...

Thus, let us not watch a boring fight in boxing...

As parents, good parents, know, sport even at the little league level is losing. Children may respond to their screaming parents, their bullying coaches, and the poorly trained referees in soccer that confuse the best with ice hockey at its worst, but the children are increasingly aware.

We have turned sports into business, and ethic into scum. Our chidden are paying the price.

When did this start? What are the benchmarks? When did we first drop the handshake and sportsmanship for the banality of what we have now?

Boxing was never baseball, and the bean was never healthy. But the mess we've become in most big time sports as wrecked things for our children.

Mayweather and Joe Louis? What do they have in common beyond boxing gloves?

When the wife beater rises, the children fall.

When the children fall, all fall.

We are falling - and TV is blaspheme to those that wish for old time sportsmanship.

Grace does not sell.

'Fight of the Century'?
Those of you who were fortunate enough to see the "Friday Night Fights' of yesteryear saw great welterweight/middleweight, etc. fights (Kid Gavilan, Emile Griffith, Billy Graham, etc., etc.)
David Doney (I.O.U.S.A.)
It was a boxing match, not a fight, and folks wanted a fight. Mayweather basically got on his bicycle and avoided Pacquiao. There was a clear difference in size and reach in favor of Mayweather, yet the smaller man did the chasing. The ref should have warned Mayweather for not engaging. I recall Ali let Frazier catch him in the "Thrilla in Manilla", although both men made history but paid a terrific price.

The best fight of the past few years was the 2013 war in the UFC between Jon "Bones" Jones and Alexander Gustafsson, a 25-minute war that was non-stop excitement.

You can't always get that, but it would have been nice if Mayweather had stayed in the pocket and fought with Pacquiao.

As I viewed a ringside photograph I saw police officers making overtime money, reporters at work, photographers at work, just a whole bunch of folk making money because of Mayweather. Granted he made the most money, a lot of money, gobs of money and therein lies the rub. How and why is it that his past behavior is written about AGAIN??? Why is it 'some' other athletes with documented trouble with the law were mentioned??? I have never struck a woman in my life, believe Peterson did nothing wrong and that the fellow who struck the woman in the elevator should have gone to prison. The history of this country is penned in blood, land was stolen, people murdered, lynched, burned, entire towns burned. Captains of industry, politicians, bureaucrats have had sordid pasts and are richer than Mayweather could ever dream. You won't read about their sordid pasts. Mayweather is vilified not because of his past misdeeds, rather his business acumen which funds an entire cottage industry and has given him a little money (compared to the aforementioned folks). I respect Mayweather for his business acumen and his work ethic and his brilliant boxing skills. My respect STOPS there. I tire of the media repeatedly bringing up the past of 'some' athletes. This country is all about the dollar-MONEY, yet when 'some' make money there's a problem. GET OVER IT.

Beyond good sports writing, great writing for all readers. My kudos are not to the fighters, but to the writers of this article. Not only because the article is an salient example of superior journalism (fair to all sides, Pacquiao, Mayweather and the Public) but as thought-provoking-about-society-in-general, vocabulary-stretching literature applied to brutality, civilization, crowd psychology and commercialism.
rws (Clarence NY)
If the report is true the fight should have been rescheduled! Manny injured his shoulder some weeks ago and did not tell folks until fight time apparently. So that would mean a weapon was reduced which made Mayweather's "defense" even easier. I do not think fans got their money's worth in this fight.
J (T)
Roy Jones has won fights with one hand. Basketball players have one games with one leg. Champions don't make excuses. They find a way and the will to win. 48-0
jim davis (new york)
They can boo if the want the best man won and Pac Man fought a horrible fight.
Gab Culvera (Quezon City)
That's because Mayweather was running and clinching Pacquiao most of the time during the fight. What do you expect?
J (T)
Ali danced and clinched and he is considered the GOAT of boxing. Clinching is a frustration tactic that obviously worked on Poochieowe.
cb (mn)
The primitive violent powerful instincts of this fighter are something else. His very presence exudes the violent primordial jungle.
YRaj (Florida)
A lot of comments by people who don't understand boxing and wanted a street fight. Manny came to fight, everyone says, yes...but Mayweather came to box and that he did. He plainly outboxed Manny! If you are complaining for Mayweather to stand still and let Manny get a great shot at him...guess what, he did! several times and Manny punched against a defense wall, couldn't penetrate and then let off! I was shocked that Mayweather stayed on the ropes and allowed Manny to swing at him. That took guts and showed that Manny did not have a proper plan at all.
Manny could not take the fight to him when he had the chance, Mayweather defended too well.
Manny came for a street fight and ended up shocked that he was outboxed! So did a lot of Manny fans and Mayweather haters.
Gab Culvera (Quezon City)
But it was a very boring fight, isn't it? I don't call that the Fight of the Century.
Andre (New York)
He wasn't booed for beating women. He is disliked for his extravagant attitude - but even more bc te fight was boring. This was nothing like Ray Leonard beating Marvin Hagler. Leonard was the boxer - but was willing to mix it up with the fighter Hagler. Same with Whitaker and Chavez. Whittaker actually hurt Chavez in that fight - even though he had little power - but Floyd didn't hurt Manny. The fight was plain boring - but he was pompous as ever.
Steve (Arlington)
The point of a a competition is to win. Not to entertain the audience. Italy and Germany has honed that in soccer and Brazil and England teams that like to show off, gets pummeled by the technical Germans and Italians. In this match between Mayweather and Manny no one broke the rules. It was fair match and the best man won whether you agree with definition of best or not. If you wanted t be entertained,WWF wrestling is where the clowns and side show perform. If this was an Olympic match and Mayweather won, gold for USA , no one would be talking about entertainment value. if i was Mayweather i would duck the blows, anyone of you would. After all, who wants to end up with permanent brain damage for rest of his life just to entertain a crowd for only one night that will still vilify you even if you gave them your all. As for those paid big money ..that is your choice; buyers remorse is weak I did not pay anything to watch cause I have better things to do with my money other than watch two grown ups beat each other
Richard Johnston (Whidbey Island,WA)
Roberto Duran in his prime would have beaten both of these guys the same night and then gone out to celebrate with the gente.
Ed Blau (Marshfield, WI)
Presently every contact sport except boxing is trying to reduce the acute and long term trauma to the participants brains. In boxing the objective of the match is to concuss your opponents brain, the knockout or TKO.
Is there something that I am missing why this "sport" continues?
Che Beauchard (Manhattan)
Boxing is coming to an end. If this was the fight of the century, then boxing already is dead. This fight had all the artistry and excitement of waiting for a late M15 bus to go from downtown to midtown. In fact, waiting for the bus is more exciting since there is are the questions of when a bus finally will arrive and whether one can find a seat when one finally arrives. There wasn't even this much excitement in this excuse for an athletic event. Let's just turn our attention to other matters, like the incessant predation of the oligarchs against the the rest of the world. Now that's a fight that ought to get some attention.
bong valencia (los angeles)
Just a little more of Pacquiao's flurries could have made Pacquiao the victor...the fight result came down to who had the most points. If aggression had to be counted(Pacquiao), and who was backing down, clinching, hugging, and running away(Mayweather), Pacquiao could have been the winner instead.
cliff nathan (reseda)
I'm 88and live in a retirement community. I walked out of a free showing of the fight in disgust. This wasn't a sporting event, it was part of the phenomena of the pooling of the wealth in the upper one percent. The same is true for the UFC. The promoters make megabucks. The fighters end up with head injuries that plague them all their lives--the promoters should provide lifetime care for these wounded atheletes. Shame on a society that tolerates this.
Carl Rice (Chicago)
If you dont like boxing, why did you watch it at all? Do you not see the hypocrisy in complaining about the culture while simultaneously participating in the spectical?
Bobby (Astoria)
Whether you cheer him, boo him, or boycott his fights won't do anything to change what Floyd Mayweather did to members of his family. What seems to be a wish that he just go away reminds me of how we treat crime in this country in general: we incarcerate people for issues that require a much deeper sort of treatment and then try to ban them from ever working again, which does nothing whatsoever to address the root of the problem. The desire to see Mayweather “swept over the rapids” of our culture strikes me as a hollow approach that may feel righteous but in reality does nothing to address the pain caused by our nationwide domestic violence issue.
genie (bklyn)
Beautiful boxing match but i wanted to see a fight. I told everyone pac wins a fight and money wins a boxing match. Mayweather is great but it's like watching a pitchers duel, boring. There's only one fight that could define how great mayweather actually is. No it is not another smaller fighter. Great fighters beat up the best bigger fighter not smaller. Money has a super welter belt, he walks around 154 lbs. He should fight triple g at 152 for that belt. That would define him as someone willing to find out how good he really is. That's the mayweather i thought could be great not this guy who refuse to defend a belt he has because he might have to fight golovkin.
Carl Rice (Chicago)
Im not sure you are aware of this but Mayweather fights at 147, Golovkin is at 160. So what are you talking about? Mayweather doesnt have to fight golovkin...man, i really wish people knew what they were talking about.
steve wheeler (tennessee)
And Golovkin has already said he would come down for the fight, so whats your point? The question is, like the dude said, would Mayweather go up to meet him? Doubtful. But Golovkin would probably be the only mayweather fight I would see after the last one.
Charlie (NJ)
Boring fight. Mayweather is certainly not the self proclaimed "Best Ever" except maybe at self promotion and being a fast runner in the ring. Both Sugar Ray's in their primes were better. Roberto Duran would have caught up with him. His feet couldn't have gotten him enough distance from Thomas Hearns either. I can't believe the number of people who paid so much money for this fight. Manny came to fight, Floyd came to make money and attempt to get himself in the same class as the undefeated Marciano. Lets see if America pays to see him Mayweather again in a rematch for his last fight.
Carl Rice (Chicago)
How did Manny come to fight but was outthrown and outlanded? What are you talking about?
jcs (nj)
Boxing is a sport? In every other setting, it is a crime. If two consenting adults start fighting in a bar, in a park, in a parking lot...even if they schedule it months ahead...will be arrested if there are police around. But, if you sell tickets to it and broadcast it, there will be police around to help it take place and cheering along...the hypocrisy is startling. Venality prevails. Either decriminalize the one or stop idolizing and promoting the other. The training is not important. If two professional athletes in the best shape of their lives do what these boxers did, they'd be arrested and their pro careers in football or baseball would be in jeopardy. Money rules.
Carl Rice (Chicago)
With your logic, NASCAR should be illegal because they are driving faster than the speed limit.
Ted S (New York)
Not a Thrilla, just plain Vanilla.
EssDee (CA)
Great boxer, terrible guy, made over $100 million for this fight. Those who booed put money in his pocket. A clear sign of what is really important to us.

It's not like people expected a great fight. Mayweather does what he does, which is always win and never put on a good show.

What we say we value and what we actually value are totally different.
Albert Shanker (West Palm Beach)
Mayweather is a brilliant business man. Wait 5 years till the man that can beat you ,slows down enough. Manny had a bad shoulder too. 5 years ago,it would of been Manny.
partlycloudy (methingham county)
I miss Ali! Heck, I miss the Gilette Friday night fights that I watched as a child with my father. Ali was the most entertaining and a great fighter. These guys nowadays can't hold a candle to Ali.
DaBully (Los Angeles)
Everybody's mad at Mayweather for winning a fight the way he has ALWAYS won fights. But in all actuality you all should be mad at Manny & Roach they're the one's that suckered you into believing that that had this ultimate fight plan for Mayweather no matter how he fought. Now he's selling you all an injured shoulder excuse-and you're buying it! Your hate has you blinded.
Dan (New Orleans)
Fight of the Century? Not hardly; it wasn't even fight of the month. If you wanted to see a real fight fan's fight, you should have watched the Lucas Mathysse -- Ruslan Provodnikov bout a few weeks ago. The fight went 12, toe-to-toe rounds; both fighters displayed extraordinary courage, fighting spirit, and the will to win that characterizes great fights. It was a damn good fight. In stark contrast, Mayweather-Pacquiao was an overhyped snooze.
Carl Rice (Chicago)
So if mathesse or ruslon came to you asking to help fund theit hospital bills, youd be ok with helping them. Because only a jerk wants people to get hurt entertaining them but wont help with their health costs, while at the same time whining about a fighter who is skilled enough in the ring to avoid being punched.
Dan (New Orleans)
There have been many fighters who were skilled enough to avoid being punched, but who also were willing to stand and fight; remember Ray Leonard? And, in the history of the sport, the most compelling matches, and the ones people remember, were the ones where the fighters actually fought, and didn't just run and clinch: Zale-Graziano, Ali-Frazier, Gatti-Ward, Barrera-Morales, to name a few. And while Mayweather is perhaps the best defensive fighter I have seen, his style makes for very boring, and unmemorable fights (with the notable exception of his fight with Miguel Cotto, which was a terrific fight).
PJ O'Connell (New York)
"...could not have made the boxer's many sponsors happy."

Per multiple sources (ESPN, Forbes, CNN), it appears Floyd Mayweather has just one corporate sponsor - the fantasy sports website Fanduel. Mayweather's inability to land endorsement deals has been extremely well documented.
judgeroybean (ohio)
Anyone who thought they were going to see the "fight of the ages" only saw the "payday of the ages". Floyd "Show Me the Money" Mayweather was going to do his thing, which is the minimum effort needed to win. A no-risk title defense. Of course there will be the sportswriters and sycophants who will faun over Mayweather's "boxing" skills, but the bottom line is that anyone who payed to see this fight was a sucker. Floyd is laughing all the way to the bank. Mayweather the best of all time? Best con man. Not even close to the best as a pugilist. You want to be called the best, you need to risk it all by engaging your opponent. And that was never going to happen.
Carl Rice (Chicago)
No mention of how Pacquiao threw less punches or landed less punches though. Seems fair. And i LOVE when fans demands that fighters "risk it all" but dont do that in their own lives and wont be there fot fighters if something terrible happens to them. Americans are so stupid and hypocritical its really a shame.
Anon Comment (UWS)
Civilized boxing = points system = boring. Manny and the Mexican boxers have this in common: they don't have some "high-falluting" way of boxing. They punch, punch and punch. They take risks. I thought that was what boxing was all about.
Mike Boylan (Philippines)
Boxing, like all professional and semi-professional (collegiate) sports is about winning and making money.
ambroisine (New York)
Think about the comment about when to cheer and when to retch when women and children are abused: the public is not fickle or confused. The cheers come from men who think it's ok to beat women, while every body gets together to condemn men who beat children.
Mike Boylan (Philippines)
A humongous marketing opportunity (aka boxing match) held in the United States with an American and a Filipino participant, featured the Mexican national anthem (sung first), then the anthems of the respective countries of the fighters, in Michael Buffer's words, "in honor of Cinco de Mayo". Had nothing at all to do with the fact that Tecate Beer was the main sponsor.
"Money" Mayweather, the perfect product.
