A Bow to Japan, and a Nod to Naples

Sounds like a delightful place. FYI - the correct pronunciation would be "yohshoku" not "yoshuku," a series of dishes that includes favorite comfort foods like Omu-raisu (omlette rice, or rice flavored with--yes, ketchup--chicken, and onions, wrapped or topped with a fluffy omlette), hambahgu (the burger without the bun), fried large shrimp, beef stew, Hayashi-rice, etc. I've been told that Spaghetti Napolitan was originally the creation of US GIs who were stationed in Italy, but I don't know if that's correct. I read about this cabbage dish in a comic book called Shinya Shokudo (midnight diner) and have been making it at home. I wonder if they got it from the same place? Looking forward to going here.

Your comment regarding regarding the spaghetti napolitan is curious - what does it mean that you couldn't eat more than a few bites but you're glad it exists?
Anthony Esposito (NYC)
Jon, the reviewer probably couldn't eat more than a few bites because it was spaghetti with ketchup which begs the additional question, Why be glad it exists?

Chicken nanban!
"Nanban," as I recall, means "southern barbarian," an insult for sure.

I read the NYT food and restaurant reviews assiduously. I worked for many years in Paris and, needless to say, I ate well there even though bistrot food definitely isn't what it's cracked up to be. I visited New York once a year and, when I got off the plane at JFK, I was screaming for a grilled cheese sandwich. And a second. With bacon.

Is Italianesque a trend ? I recently enjoyed tasting some wonderful onigiri on 29th Street at Hanamizuki made with Italian salami, capers, black olives and peppercorn; as well as an amazing soup redolent with gnocchi . Sadly there was no sake list.

the Japanese love Italian food and have been mixing it with Japanese food for quite some while. There's Basta Pasta in NYC which has been around since 1990. Here's an article from the Atlantic

Yeah, they do that Japanese spaghetti Napolitan at a few places here in Hawaii too and it is just as awful. I am not glad that it exists. But otherwise this restaurant sounds great.

OMG - Japanese food can be so zen - wabi sabi - perfection in humility - silence - simplicity - bliss !

raw cabbage as a test - didn't know that

my local favourite Japanese places - $3.90 soba - heaven - or another place I order the no-longer-on-the-menu roasted garlic ramen - al dente - with umami to die for - mwoah !

Where is the $3.9 soba?

Yes. Where are these favorite places with the $3.90
