Jon's departure is going to leave some huge shoes to fill. His irreverence and satirical wit masked a true concern for equally and fairness in the world and no politician, commentator or organization was off-limits.
While I will miss him hosting The Daily Show, his freedom from the daily grind of doing the show will give him the freedom to produce more substantial work. His first move, Rosewater, was a good first effort and I hope to see more from him.
Best wishes Jon, and thanks for the years of indignation and laughs.

Oh Jon, me boy, we'll be missin' you for sure. Who else will tell us the truth and make us smile? Who else will step outside the madness and mock the fools that make such a mess of our lives? When Jon goes home will be missin' you hurrah, hurrah. When Jon goes home will be missin' you hurrah, hurrah...we'll be missin you...hurrah...hurrah...

Hate to see the show end. I enjoy laughing!
How about Tina Fey???

He will be missed. True talent. How about Pat McGann as the next host? @mcgannpat patmcganncomedy.com #patmcganndailyshow
All I have to say COLBERT & STEWART for 2016!!!! Let our voices heard. There's only less than 2 years left for the election, but with their intelligence and popularity, I'm pretty sure they'll win. Jon and Stephen have so many fans, they will win. Even if they lose, it'll be progress if their names is on the ballot.

Everyone this article cites as getting their giant careers started on The Daily Show is a man. Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell, John Oliver, Larry Wilmore...Can Jon Stewart and The Daily Show do their part as active members of liberal pop culture to support women in comedy?
1
As funny as I found Mr. Stewart, I was recently shocked at his willingness to ignore facts to make a joke. Discussing the Charlie Hebdo massacre with Jimmy Carter, he opined that the massacre seemed like a "pretext" for something else. This then gave Mr. Carter the opportunity to blame Israel as an "origin" for the increase in Islamist supremacist violence. What made this attack seem so insincere to Mr. Stewart? He never said. Was the murder of Theo Van Gogh for his film "Submission" also a pretext for something else? What of the fatwa by Iran against Salman Rushdie for his book "The Satanic Verses"? Was that also a pretext for something else? Perhaps Mr. Stewart's comment was only a 'pretext' for enabling Mr. Carter to spout more of his anti-Israel rhetoric, such as how Israel has been discouraging Hamas' "moves towards peace"?
In the same episode he accused Israeli P.M. Netanyah of having jailed a cartoonist (according Al Jazeera) and mocked him for attending the French demonstrations. That P.A. Pres. Abbas had been using the same Islamic supremacist beliefs which led to the Charlie Hebdo attack to incite violence against Israelis did not seem to render Abbas' attendance inappropriate in any way.
Although some accused him of focusing more on the republicans than the democrats, it seemed that he drew blood from both sides, and that he made an effort to use satire as a tool for truth. That episode left me very disappointed. Perhaps it is time for him to let go.

Jon Stewart is wicked smart and talented. I was so upset he was leaving until I saw his show earlier this week skewering the media coverage surrounding Brian Williams fabricated Iraq story. I get that they are friends, media stars, etc. but come on. He gave Brian Williams a total pass.
Of course the media's cheerleading the war in Iraq was horrendous and unforgivable. Of course infotainment is a problem. Nevertheless I lost considerable faith in Stewart watching him totally excuse Williams' poor judgement. Now I'm not as sad to see him go.

1
He does one segment on one show that displeases you and you are ready to say, "Bah!" and dismiss his whole career on The Daily Show? Sheesh.
2
He is leaving a HUGE gap and I wish he would stay .. at least part-time? This viewer is very troubled by the information on his departure.
1
Will miss Jon more than he can know. However, if he can get Elizabeth Warren to run for president with himself as vice president, then that could make up for his leaving. Seriously.
2
It will be interesting to see if the Daily Show continues on without him. The Colbert Report was clearly not a good analog, being so tightly wrapped up in the persona of its host. I suspect that while Jon Stewart is the nucleus of the show, the writing staff has done much of the heavy lifting over the years and could continue to offer up the same style of wit. At least I hope so!
1
Jon has been a bit stale for some time, and looked a bit bored and embarrassed, especially with the less interesting guest interviews and repetitive issues on the news. How many times can any one mock our comic-ludicrous Congress?
He looked longingly as Colbert bounced from The Colbert Report to Late Night without losing much of Colbert's sparkle. Jon has never been able to wear latex bodysuits with rhinestones for distraction.
I look forward to his doing something he truly loves again. That's when he gets really interesting. He can be funny any time though so I'll miss getting a dose of reality on The Late Night Show every now and then.

Why the heck does he have to 'leave home'? Family? He should ask some big movie star or director about being shipped off to some location shoot for months at a time. They'd tell him this is why they eventually chose the tv gig---for the family! And with his standing, he could easily go 'on sabbatical' to do a movie from time to time. Don't leave us Jon!
I'm sad he's leaving the show - he will be greatly missed. Hopefully he will pop up with another brilliant show....
1
Cronkite or Murrow? I don't think so. Those were the days when news was presented in a non-partisan manner, a skill long out of date in the modern world of spin.
3
"Those were the days when news was presented in a non-partisan manner." Um, no. The idea that information can be presented 100% without bias is at best naive. Murrow's stories in particular were intended to present a specific thesis and world view. I agree that the big three tended to be less partisan generally last century because they didn't want to lose viewers on either side of the aisle, but I wonder if, say, Dr. King would have agreed that segments about Black Americans were presented without bias. Murrow lost his show denouncing Senator McCarthy. That's a great legacy, but let's not rose-tint our glasses.
2
Jon Stewart is irreplaceable I'm afraid. In all of my 70+ years, he and "The Daily Show" have been been a more important "must see" and frankly unmissable to the degree that my wife and I record every show, so that we don't miss any one of them.
Truly, he is a God-send, an H.L. Mencken of our time, and welcome him as an honorary member of our family - one who displays the corruption of our government and the shameless jerks who make up the Congress clearly apparent to all those who are not brainless.
Will there be another of his stature and constancy? I fear not.
But thank you, Jon for the example of fearless honesty you have been for us all. - (Now why don't you swap jobs with Brian Williams?)

I miss Colbert report and will miss Stewart just as much, especially during election season. Good luck finding another host with similar qualifications who can focus on news, truth and satire.

Dear Jon: Please stay! How will I survive Congress?
How will I survive Faux News?
How will I survive Endless War?
How will I survive Darth Vader?
How will I survive Wall sucker Street?

Hate to see Jon go, but it provides the perfect opening for Brian Williams who is looking for an anchor desk which doesn't require such a high degree of trust.
2
I wish Jon Stewart moderates at least one presidential debate for 106!.
4
Jon Stewart transformed this space. Who can replace him? No one. But my vote is for Chris Rock - he would be transformative in his own way. Let's start a campaign!
5
Watching Jon Stewart is beyond joy. I laugh out loud, almost every night. The opening segment is almost always brilliant. And, it is a personal reaction. It's as if somone is inside my brain and able to communicate my thoughts perfectly, with a great balance of accuracy, satire, humor and intelligence. And, the facial expressions and body language and the way he sometimes cracks himself up with his own humor and the writing? Priceless.
He is successful because so many other people feel the same way about him.
Who else can do that? People usually say that someone else will come along. In this case, I doubt it. He is one of a kind.

It's time for a decade of a conservative funnyman (or woman) to lampoon the left. Jon had a great run, but was sooooo far left that it often annoyed me. Surely Pelosi and Reid are fodder for tremendous comedy. You don't even have to try that hard, the left makes it easy.
2
You have your comedy outlet. It is the joke known as Fox "News."
20
A successful comedian has truth and empathy on his/her side, traits the right-wing lacks.
3
His work has been one of the few ways to navigate&reconcile an increasingly inconceivable world while also laughing. It is restorative, reassuring and soul-nurturing. But he’s been doing this a long time. The man deserves a break (and much more). Perhaps it’s time to let him move on and for the rest of us to get to work and help unfurl his insight and satire forward.
2
Jon, I'm begging you. Can you please hold out until after the 2016 election.
10
Wonderful idea, though I doubt he'd take it. Give him Brian Williams' anchor seat. However, I suspect he's too honest for the job, though I don't think all the sniping is fair to Williams, who mostly did a fine job.
5
Dear Jon
I suspect you have no idea how important you are to so many, those of us who after a long day of nonsense, come to you for a much needed check on reality, honestly provided with incredible wit, intelligence and humor. As a 30yr military guy and Iraq vet, you help me to accept that I live in an insanly polarized, do-nothing (but shovel more wealth to the wealthy) homeland exacerbated by the non-stop negativity blaring from the 24 hour corporate "news" fear-mongering machine. Thank you for helping to make it more bearable. Many will miss you so very much. You are a true national public treasure and there aren't many of your kind left in the US.
Very Respectfully, Frank

I am gong to be really disappointed if he didn't leave the show to run for president.
12
It would be so amazing if Jon runs for President! Also if Colbert could run for President. I don't care who wins, having Colbert or Stewart would be much better than to elect anyone else. All these 2016 candidates do not seem qualified to be President. The United States needs a new fresh face, either the two of them or Hilary, but I am tired of seeing the same old conservative guys telling promises that will never happen.
In the run up to the last election, Jons imitation of Jeff Foxworthy extolling Mitts virtues was one of his great moments!
5
The country needs the likes of Jon Stewart doing what he does more than the country needs any of the comedy clowns currently auditioning for the job of Ringmaster under the elephant tent of the Republican Three Ring Circus.
12
NO!!!!! But that's personal. I never thought there'd be another Mort Sahl, either. It took many years, but Jon Stewart more than admirably filled his shoes. Now I hope I live long enough to see the next Jon Stewart appear on the scene. He will be sorely missed.
3
I knew this day would one day come but none the less I am very sad to see him go. I can only hope they find another host that comes close to filling his shoes. It will be quite a challenge but one the that the Daily Show is capable of doing.
3
i've been watching larry wilmore...his show is becoming more congruent - he is a really smart guy, obviously compassionate and humble (wonderful self-effacing smiles and nods) - and gets into the nitty gritty of what is happening in this country. his presence gives me hope. i think jon's brilliance will continue to shine somewhere, somehow and hopefully on a global scale. i am really grateful to him and his crew for their great humor and sparkling intelligence.
7
Hey, I liked Wilmore, too, until he took over for Colbert. What he is doing now is too liberal, too one-sided and not funny. His show probably appeals to a lot of black people, though.
Actually, Wilmore's appeal is to intelligent folk of any color; perhaps an explanation as to why you are struggling to enjoy it.
10
I am not 'struggling to enjoy it', Frank. I checked it out, didn't like it and moved on to something I do enjoy. I might check Wilmore out again at a later date to see if he's changed things up. But I won't 'struggle' with it, either way. Have a great one.
Please, Lord, please let Tina Fey take over The Daily Show.
8
She is very intelligent, hilarious and witty. I love her.
1
We will miss him, but he gave it a terrifically good run. I agree that it is time to move on. He's made his point and done it well. He has more to say, I'm sure, and it is likely to be even better than what he's already accomplished. I can't wait to see what he does next!
4
Legacy time.. remember what your daughter said. When she is sixty, you'll be !00. Good luck!
1
John Stewart's take-down of Tucker Carlson on "Crossfire" is one of the gutsiest, funniest moments on television. Few people can walk the line between indignant and hilarious as nimbly as John Stewart. Best of luck and you will be missed.
10
Those (mostly on the right) who foolishly dismiss him as a comedian, are threatened by the kind of journalism that he practices. Trustworthy, informative, and courageous American TV journalism has all but disappeared. JS has almost single-handedly revived it, and has unabashedly taken to task those whose job it is to practice it (and who fail miserably at it). The Crossfire bit is a piece of history.
And of course, he has not been shy to take on the left, the right, but especially infotainment media. He'll be sorely missed.

7
I WILL MISS HIM MADLY!!!!
7
Does this mean Craig Kilborn will be back anchoring the Daily Show?
I kind of hope not.
1
Even if you disagree with him, you have to respect him. As I disagreed with him occasionally on economic issues, I still enjoyed watching his show and he truly served as a watch-guard over the media, politics, and social issues. No one will be able to replace him. Oliver is good but not the same.
5
Oh no! Wherever will I be able to find news that confirms my existing prejudices?
2
Just an FYI, news doesn't conform to prejudice - it's just news, or it should be. Unfortunately, if that's all your looking for, you shouldn't have to look too far or too hard.
4
Um...clearly you've neither watched the show nor even read the article you're commenting on. Comedy is not news, but your friends at Fox have made the same mistake -- so at least you're in the company you deserve.
6
He calls himself a pretend journalist, but his best pieces were spotlights on hypocrisy where he would use the subjects own video, audio, or recorded comments in an often 180 degree juxtaposition to their newly-minted-for-the-moment-pandering. Hoist by their own petard. And not a Fox-style carefully edited-out-of-context or photoshopped petard, either. This is why we all trust him so much. It is depressing how rarely it seemed to make a dent in the legions of duplicitous sophists, although America is in his debt for getting Tucker Carlson off the air.
9
I have religiously tuned in to The Daily Show with Jon Stewart since it premiered in Canada. Both Jon and Stephen Colbert, with their super-quick wit and ability to roast the corporate media, have felt like family members far longer than I can remember. Colbert's departure was a shock to my system, but at least I still had Stewart. Now, he'll be leaving too. End of an era. Alas.
I hope that whoever next leads The Daily Show will be at least as funny and sharp as Jon is, and I hope that the show maintains its political irreverence.
I just have one complaint against Jon Stewart: he often acted mean-spirited to heroes of mine: Dennis Kucinich and Bernie Sanders come to mind. On the other hand, he savaged the Neanderthals at Fox and CNN, so it kind of balanced out. Jon, I will miss you!

First Colbert, now Stewart. I don't know how they have done it so well for so long. Political satire has lost two great practitioners of that art. Both were more than satirists, however, particularly Stewart. With the dumbing down of broadcast and cable news; the ever increasing lack of any real substance in local TV news and, sadly, even most local newspapers; the replacement of substance and true reporting with fluff in many media (including much that passes for "news" on the internet); and the proliferation of screaming talking heads, Stewart became a valid, trusted source of news and, more importantly, truth to many otherwise politically disenchanted viewers. Stewart skewered politicians, government, public figures, and the media in a way that helped reveal truth (not THE TRUTH, not Stewart's truth, just truth) that most of the rest of the media (including, sadly, this paper at times) missed, never looked for, or purposefully helped obfuscate. Stewart and Colbert were often extraordinarily funny, and always very entertaining. But they were more than that. Unfortunately, the space that allowed them to be so brilliant existed primarily because of the abdication of responsibility by (most of) the "real" TV, print and internet media. The political IQ of this country just dropped by about 40 points. Hopefully John Oliver can help lift it again. He's off to a very good start.
14
Brian Williams would be an excellent replacement for Stewart on The Daily Show. His first week could be used for elegant self-mockery and repentance.
After that, we could enjoy the charm, intelligence, experience and wit of a slightly flawed gentleman.

3
John Stewart will be remembered as the Karl Kraus of his generation - scathing wit, satirical brilliance, and a insight into society that is unparalleled.
May his future endeavors be even more success and continue to cast the cleansing light of comedy into the world.
May his future endeavors be even more success and continue to cast the cleansing light of comedy into the world.
6
As an honest man who taught us the values of truth and helped everyone keep informed through satire, he will be truly missed. I will never forget his first show after 9/11. He mentioned, through tears, that it was his duty and privilege to be on television during those moments. I will never forget that.
7
I hope you run for president of the USA.
5
This is a serious loss that will create a sizeable vaccum in the public discourse. The news analysis here is conspiciously absent from more traditional sources, including cable news giants, newspapers and social media.
I think size of this news hole will be felt in the coming years after his retirement, and I wish he'd reconsider.

7
I'm a social liberal, fiscal conservative who loved The Daily Show. Jon's lefty leanings (hard left) didn't always sit well with me, but he was undeniably funny, nonetheless. My hope is for a similar show with a faux-news format that can/will lampoon both sides of the political spectrum.
3
John, Please don't go. It is selfish I know, but who will we turn to for news now?
8
Saw his movie Rosewater during the fall. I thought to myself how very talented and daring Jon was to invest his time to tell this story. I can only see him doing very well in the future, and look forward to seeing what future projects he gets involved in. The movie was very good, and I will miss Jon's take on the news. Good luck Jon!
7
For similar reasons that I have long admired Jon Stewart with his wit, insight, and compassion, though bittersweet, I salute him for the courage to decide to take another path in his life.
His comedic gifts have helped me and us through some very troubled times and still, on occasion, look at the worst and see the light.
Jon, please check in with an occasional special. We need you for the upcoming election cycle.

He is wise to bail now before his ratings plummet because Colbert is gone...
He is leaving to become part of the cast of Downton Abbey - the answer to Lady Edith's prayers, a handsome Jewish American businessman. Instead of the usual predictable Christmas special, we'll have the Bat Mitzvah special as Lady Edith converts, Marigold becomes Mary Goldberg ( fondly called Molly) and Mr. Stewart finds respite from cold reality in a world of castles and costumes. Good Luck !!
4
And Downton Abbey will go on for many, many more seasons!
Thank you John for all the years of laughter, thought provoking speakers and commentary, insightful reporting, clarity in the face or corruption and corruptible media disinformation. I relish what comes next from you professionally, and if this is simply retirement to be with your family then that is so well deserved! Huzzah, Huzzah, Huzzah!
3
Hey Jon - there's a chair over at Meet the Press that would fit you well. And it's one day a week.
7
A faithful viewer for the duration. So long, and thanks for all the fish....or something like that. The very best to you, J. Stube, and your family. Long life. We will miss you, but life needs transformation to keep it valid, and fresh. Many, many blessings.
3
I would like to personally thank Jon for his single greatest achievement: getting Tucker Carlson off television. Jon, I am indebted to you forever.
12
The five stages of grief (as experienced by a Jon Stewart fan):
1. denial: it's not true, one of these nights he'll come up on the show and say "got you... that announcement was just a joke."
2. depression: my life will be over, there will be no point in waking up every morning and going on through the day when I will no longer be able to tune in to his show at 11 pm.
3. rage: he's just selfish and mean, how could he do that to me, to us, to the country, to the world
4. negotiation: it was probably time for this, maybe he'll start another show, or move on to a better project
5. acceptance: he's a free man, these things happen, we'll all move on, he gave us seventeen amazing years... thank you Jon!

Jon Stewart should replace Brian Williams at NBC.
Following his NBC tenure--during which he will effectively dissolve network news theater through mockery of its hyperbolic and negligent reporting--Jon already has experience running Stephen Colbert's Super PAC, so his transition to running for office is practically inevitable.
Stewart & Colbert 2016!

When I heard the news that Jon Stewart was leaving the Daily Show I felt like my best friend had just died. Losing the Colbert Report was hard enough. Stewart's ingenious satire and journalistic integrity made digesting even the most upsetting news stories palatable. Time and time again he proved that laughter really is the best medicine. I so loved his impressions of Mitch McConnel! This is very sad. Best of luck Jon Stewart! You will be sorely missed!
9
How about his impressions of Joe Lieberman as Droopy Dog? :)
6
His impression of Mitch McConnell is spot-on awesome!
6
Joe Lieberman as Droopy Dog was quintessentially brilliant! And who can forget Jon's impression of Lindsey Graham as a Southern belle? Sheer poetry!
6
May God Bless Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert.
And, May God (continue to) Bless the United States of America (even without them at Comedy Central!)
(I'm freaking out….)

I'm quite elderly (almost 80) and Jon Stewart is MY favorite journalist, even though I'm not considered part of his demographic. I always looked forward to 11PM to finish my day with a relaxing laugh at recent scarey events, and I will miss him.
15
It's hard to believe that both he and Colbert will be out of the picture during the '16 Election. The show reached well beyond the 2.2M viewers with links appearing daily on many web sites capturing his previous nights rant or take down. His writers, researchers, and on air colleagues were just masterful at poking fun at the hypocrisy rampant in our country. He made a major contribution and will be missed.
The Right must be in their glory although they need to focus on how little of the country is with them...you can't gerrymander, deny voting rights and count on Fox News forever.

7
He transformed the Daily Show and will leave huge shoes to fill. Jon Stewart was my voice of reason in the Bush/Cheney years. How are Millenniums going to get there news now LOL.
6
John Stewart had a remarkable ability to be entertaining and enlightening. He was always well prepared. After the financial crisis he interviewed Jim Kramer. He had a clip that contradicted everything Mr. Kramer had said. By the end of the show, his message was clear. Mr. Kramer and other financial pundits should have warned us about the upcoming debacle. Mr. Stewart, I will miss you.
6
I feel like I am going through a divorce!
8
The Daily Show has been the most dependable half hour of entertainment on television. Thank you Jon Stewart for making it easier to sleep every night.
9
I stopped watching Brian Williams years ago, & stopped watching meet the press a year or two ago. All my news was from Colbert, Stewart, & the NewsHour, & now two of those are gone. One of the toughest interviews I ever saw was Stewarts of Sibelius during the healthcare rollout, if she thought this was going to be softballs, ... For a somewhat too knee jerk supporter of Obama, it was almost painful to watch- but it was a real service to the public. He also distinguished himself with unremitting coverage of the VAs backlog & trashing of vets treatment. No one else chewed on these stories , not even Colbert, the way Jon did, & I know there were other stories he & his crew did well on too. I don't have anything for my dvr at night anymore...
9
Like everyone else, I am sad. But I am also incredibly grateful to Stewart. Humor, wit, candor. It doesn't get any better. I wish him all the best and look forward to seeing where his extraordinary talent takes him.
9
You've got to be a little bit insane to maintain your sanity in this world. He helped a lot with the process. Good luck, John.
5
Good luck, Jon! Thanks for keeping us informed and laughing.
2
Mr. Stewart never adopted the ridiculous mantle of "Fair and Balanced" - as the mainstream media of all ilks was complicit in the packaging, spin and straight up hypocrisy presented by today's society, Jon became the Don Quixote of the modern age- speaking truth to power in a quest to encourage people to ask questions, seek truth, disdain falsehood- to make the world a more decent place. As his friend Stephen Colbert perfectly stated "Reality has a well-known liberal bias" - Jon Stewart was the one who demonstrated that intellect wasn't a character flaw or political position [as his pals over at FOX often opined] but a vital part of today's society.
6
I understand there is a potential opening over at NBC News.......I believe somebody named Brian something-or-other used to work there.......
4
awe . . . . will Faux network be the only major outlet for "fake" news? Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity aren't nearly as funny or informative. The show will be missed.
2
I started watching the Daily Show when I was in high school, and rued the day Mr. Stewart replaced Mr. Kilborn as host. I’ll ascribe this to youthful ignorance…so glad to be proven wrong! Mr. Stewart is truly gifted—I didn’t think it possible to laugh aloud and simultaneously question my perspective of the world. His talent and appeal was truly transcendent—even my immigrant parents and conservative friends tuned in to watch him every night. He will be missed and I wish him the best on his future endeavors.

Jon Stewart will be missed. I have often felt that his was a lone voice crying in the wilderness. I hope he reemerges in a more prominent and more accessible format.
4
I grew tired of Stewart as the year went by. I am no conservative, but I found him excessively liberal and unnecessarily insulting. I think it went to his head and he had become a parody of himself, took himself too seriously. It is probably why he himself became restless.
1
It sounds like you took him too seriously. He's a comedian and the show was a parody. More than anything else it was a mockery of the media, and a well deserved one at that. I think you need to take a closer look- MSNBC and CNN were also regularly skewered by the Daily Show, not just Fox News. The show simply spoke truth to power.
9
What's with the past tense? It's not a eulogy...
2
Very sorry that's he's leaving. He is one of the few voices of sanity in American politics.
2
Jon Stewart and Stephan Cobert had the only two television shows I watched. They were the filter through which I could tolerate our dysfunctional political system and the counterweight to the insanity which is Fox News.
Jon Stewart's line re: Brian Williams..."finally someone is being held accountable for lying about the Iraq war"...BRILLIANT!!!
Without comedy and political satire, there is no Democracy.

5
With his blind faith political views, he finally ran out of material. "Public servant?" Maybe for card-carrying Democrats. As a nation, we are in desperate need of impartial news as well as impartial comedy/lampooning of both political parties. Why are people so afraid of lampooning Mr. Obama?
2
How funny is "impartial comedy"? Comedy requires a viewpoint and viewpoints are never impartial - unless one doesn't want to be truly funny, just amusing.
7
He lampoons stupidity, period.
3
Say it ain't so, John. We will miss the comedy, but we will miss even more one of the few sane & even-handed commentators on our American dysfunction.
3
Best of Luck to Mr. Stewart in whatever venture he decides to pursue.
BUT, we sure will miss him.
He helped us keep our sanity during the fight-wing uproar.
He will be sorely missed.

3
We're grieving, hard. Jon brought balance, wit and intelligence to a vapid medium and that hole will be almost impossible to fill. I just hope he's considering moving those talents to fill an even more important vacuum... perhaps Washington?
Run Jon, run.
Run Jon, run.
5
I think Brian Williams would be great as the host for the Daily Show!
As much as I am sorry to see Jon Stewart go, I am placing my vote right now for John Oliver, he did a fantastic job when Jon was away, so much so that I almost didn't miss Jon Stewart.
2
Maybe fabled newsreader Brian Williams can be enlisted to take over
Jon Stewart always minimizes his importance to his audience. Even when he calls what he does on The Daily Show “fake news” he does a disservice to the messages he is trying to convey. To some of us on the other side of the camera, this news is devastating. I honestly do feel better after watching The Daily Show. Who is going to make me laugh at end of a long day after being bombarded by all the bad and insane news? Who am I going to turn to to validate my own sanity?
I fully appreciate Jon is backed up by a brilliant writing and producing team. Sometimes while watching, I find myself finishing Jon’s sentences before he speaks. It’s like the writers are in my head. I really do hope the whole team sticks around for the next iteration of what The Daily Show is to become. They are the foundation and can help the poor soul selected to try to “replace” Jon. No, that’s not right, there is no “replacing” Jon. Sigh….. :(
I really do wish Jon good luck and much success with whatever he decides to do next – even if it is only to have dinner on a school night with his family. Your fans are here for you Jon, I hope you know that.

Among his other accomplishments, Stewart has overcome one of the mostly invisible forms of discrimination; that is, the bias encountered by short people in terms of their hiring, promotion, and compensation as contrasted with that of their taller counterparts. This issue should be addressed just as any other apparently inherent bias would be.
Fox News: My Comedy Channel. Comedy Central: My News Channel.
What a legacy. Well done. We (including my 14-year old son who is encouraged to watch most evenings) hate to see him go, but would say that, just like his daily comedy and interview performances, his timing is probably impeccable yet again.

3
Next career move? If Franken can be a senator, why can't Stewart run for….?
6
Now if we could get him to run for POTUS that would be worth it.
5
Has it been 16 years? Time flies when you are having fun. I still wait for 'The Daily Show ' everyday, since the show made it's debut. We'll miss you Jon, we'll miss you terribly. But I'll delay the good-byes until the very last and try not to get sappy. But a heartfelt thanks for all the insights and perspectives in this world gone mad and being humorous in all this gloom and doom. I can think of only another writer along the same vein - Gail Collins of the NYT. If you two get get into a conversation please let me be a fly on the wall.
3
But where are we to get the real news?
1
"A spoon full of sugar helps the medicine (of life) go down." So it was with Johnny Carson whom is still missed. And so it will be regarding the wit and wisdom of Jon Stewart.
3
Jon Stewart made the day a whole lot better with his satirical observations of the current events in the USA, and throughout the world. It's a shame that the mainstream media has largely abdicated their responsibilities to the average viewer, and instead doing the least with the most.
Jon Stewart will be rightly missed.
Jon Stewart will be rightly missed.
1
He probably wouldn't want to dirty his hands, but maybe he could take over for Brian Williams...
Jon Stewart has been a far more focused intelligent trenchant enlightening "journalist" more often than any "real" journalist on Fox, CNN, MSNBC, CBS, NBC and ABC.
Proving that you can both entertain as a news business and enlighten as a journalism profession.
Proving that you can both entertain as a news business and enlighten as a journalism profession.
The high level of intelligence and caring shown in these comments pay excellent tribute to Jon Stewart and the level of people he and his show attracted. He will be replaced- but never replaced. I thank him for his service.
3
Last night, we heard the bad news. Larry Wilmore was the first to say that Brian Williams (who is quick, news savvy, funny and well-informed) could take the TDS gig. It is possible that others currently on the show could also do it. The important thing that must survive is the fierce independence that Stewart brought to the show. The clear-eyed view of "us" has made a difference. The wide net he cast for talent has given us much. Whatever comes next, thanks Jon.
Jon Stewart is the only person on television that I trust completely and without hesitation. I am heartbroken he is leaving and only hope he finds another venue for his unique style of political and social engagement.
66
I saw the headlines last night and I was devastated! I am a senior citizen and have never missed an episode of The Daily Show or the Colbert Report, with the exception of the two times I was hospitalized. I'll bet Fox News is jubilant that they no longer will have to worry about their so-called news reports being skewered and the hypocrisy of their news segments which all too often contradict earlier "factual" reporting! I wish Jon and his family all the best, and I hope his news teams will still be as brilliant with whoever succeeds him! I also hope that Stephen Colbert's takeover for Letterman will not disappoint us although he will have formidable opposition with the wildly popular Jimmy Fallon show.
3
I grew up in a place and time (Ireland in the 80s) when providing the news was a public service. Now it is a commercial enterprise, driven by ratings and profits, drifting ever further from its moorings which were originally designed to serve the public good. The Daily Show, under John Stewart's guidance, is a rare exception - a beacon of light in an increasingly depressing industry that has lost its soul. How ironic that Stewart, by excelling as a public servant in the truest sense of the word, has made a boat load of money. I will miss you John.
4
Given the degree to which Jon Stewart is trusted by young Americans, NBC might do well to consider having him run the Nightly News show. There is an opening.
I attended his live show in NYC in 2006 and was put off by the "coached" laughs. The audience were instructed when to clap and laugh loudly something his TV or online viewers might not be aware of. However, I got a renewed respect for him over the years for his mentorship abilities not only with Colbert, Carrell etc but also with Egyptian comedians.
2
Yup. TV audiences are schills.
I love his show, but it is pretty obvious that over the last year or so, his heart hasn't really been in the show. He's worked hard, but the spark seems to be missing.
It's a show that really requires a deeply idealistic world view, and these days, that's gotta be hard to maintain.

1
Jon and the Daily Show have been for me a reassurance that I was not the only person who thought that there was something wrong with this picture (i.e., the nation, the world, and above all, politics and the media). He harpooned hypocrisy. And by the way, not just on the right; he gave Democrats their due if he felt they were duplicitous spin artists. Also by the way, some commenter asked if Brian Williams could take over. No, I doubt it; let's leave it at that. But the show needs the right front man (or woman)- the writing and the spirit is there already.
3
I thought the greatest moment was when Jon Stewart gave Jim Cramer grief about not doing enough to warn people like Stewart's mother about the dangers of the stock market crashing back in 2008 when, in fact, Stewart's brother, Larry Liebowitz, was COO of the New York Stock Exchange. What a hypocrite.
1
Let me debunk two things. First, there is a difference between first hearing about something somewhere and "getting your news" from somewhere. I have heard about many things form checking my Facebook News Feed but I then go read some actual journalists, ya know, like an intelligent person should?
Second, those who you who think it's so funny to laugh at only one half of the political spectrum--you are predisposed to hate that half so you laugh easily. It is common for stand ups to insult liberals and to make the room laugh. I don't think there's anything particularly funny about many of his jokes, because he is playing on dumb stereotypes. It works both ways: you may not find jokes aobut liberals funny, but I do, and so do many others.
I will not miss this guy, a hack through and through propped up by the liberal media.

First of all, a lot of stuff covered on this show are not laughable. Next, forget the "liberal media," Jon Stewart is "propped up" by me.
3
You get your news from FaceBook? Like any 'intelligent' person? Yeah, right.
3
Stewart for President in 2016!
4
Dear NBC,
Forget Williams.
Get Stewart.
Sincerely,
The World.
Forget Williams.
Get Stewart.
Sincerely,
The World.
Not Jon and Stephen both. Say it ain't so.
2
Maybe it's time to get to sleep a little earlier.
I guess we wil have to turn to the real comic news now (Fox, CNN, et al) for our laughs.
2
He is so brilliant and one of a kind, I hope has a great new venue in mind from which to inform and entertain us. I remember fondly his delightfully passive-aggressive takedown of Lynne Cheney when she appeared on his show years ago. It was masterful.
4
John Oliver is the obvious (and best) choice but if they can't lure him back from HBO this soon then find someone in the Sorkin camp to hold down the fort for awhile. Maybe Joshua Malina or Richard Schiff to get us thru the 2016 election at least.
Never missed a Show in 4 years, even as it was geolocked in Germany (easy to circumvent though)
He will truly be missed, even across the pond. Can't even describe how hard this news hit me.
As one german newspaper put it: "This is our popcultural trauma"

4
Where are we going to turn for reliable news coverage, between John Oliver's take-downs? Stewart did all the heavy lifting for us, as the "news" shows pulled their punches, or didn't punch at all, and morphed into entertainments. Stewart's heart has always been in it, which is why he's made such a difference.
1
I'm heartbroken. Jon Stewart has been part of my weeknights since he took over from Craig Kilborn. I often found myself laughing until I cried (or scared the dog!), sometime jumping out of bed to cheer something particularly wonderful. And I gained so much "street cred" with my nephews when I turned them on to The Daily Show some 13 or 14 years ago. This may be Jon's last gift to Stephen Colbert -- if viewers aren't watching Jon at 11, they may be more likely to turn to CBS at 11:30.
3
Will miss him. Stewart is the Mark Twain of our day, poking fun at politicians of both parties in love with their own egos.
1
This news hit me like a punch in the gut. He is a ray of sanity in the blinding haze of madness. His absence will be sorely missed.
Satirical commentary changed forever after Jon Stewart's arrival on the scene. It will never be the same after his departure.
Godspeed, Jon!

Left out of this article was any mention of Stewart's anti-corporate views that comprised the bulk of his show's material, which illustrates why a large "segment of [Stewart's] audience...had lost its faith in broadcast and print news outlets or never regarded them as sacrosanct in the first place".
Although politically savvy viewers, including those who couldn't stomach the pro-corporate pablum served up by the likes of lying' Brian, propelled the show to success, I was always uneasy about this success.
The far right has their own network but truly left views never make it into the mainstream media, except in a highly sanitized version (e.g., as in this article omitting Stewart's incessant indictments of the worst of corporate behavior). Why was Stewart permitted to roam so far left? Was it because he was on so late and the kids were already in bed?
I don't think so. The answer lies in Stewart's delivery and style. He has a tendency to present things in a cynical fashion that leaves no room for, pardon the expression, hope and change. His attitude suggests, "hey, we might as well laugh at it, because there is nothing we can do about it".
That's pretty much a verbatim quote from a diehard Stewart fan friend of mine. I've seen numerous Daily Shows and I have never witnessed Stewart either support or call for any direct action or protest of the status quo which he relentlessly harpoons. If he had, the shows run wouldn't have lasted 16 weeks.

Thank you Jon for the 16 years. Trying... to...process...I've never been in agreement with so many comments. The only reason not to cut cable is gone.

Reporting of politics will not be as entertaining, interesting and seriously smart and funny without Jon Stewart. He will be sorely missed. I miss him already!
1
John Stewart has been a broadcast news icon, along with the likes of Cronkite, Murrow, Swazey, Huntley, Brinkley, Edwards, et al. I mean that. Oh, I know he's doing comedy, but Stewart has taught his audience more about civics, how levels of government work, how election laws work than anyone out there. He had engaged a generation of voters who have been inspired to participate in the democratic process (although we have a long way to go on that front).
Most importantly, he has held those who represent us accountable for their words and deeds more than anyone in the news media. For that, we all owe him a debt of gratitude. M-Th evenings will never be the same (sigh).

Whenever he left it would be on a high note. I hope he changes his mind. He is so good at showing us the duplicitous stance of conservatives and Fox pretend news.
Is Jon Stewart replacing Brian Williams ?
What a coincidence!!!!
What a coincidence!!!!
The most important television presence of the last 10 years. Sad to see it end, but hopefully he's got more surprised in store for us.
2
Jon - We hardly knew ye. Safe passages,
Wow. Brian Williams and Jon Stewart on the same day. America has lost its greatest. mst trusted newsman. We'll miss you Jon.
"Mr. Stewart saw no need to pretend to be a neutral host."
I don't hew to the left as Mr. Stewart does -- I often find that his "analysis" appears to succeed only because of the things he leaves out -- but I've never begrudged him any of his success.
He's brilliant at being funny, which is his job. I laugh as hard as anyone, even when I disagree with the point beneath the joke.
Mr. Stewart isn't the problem, but the legions of people who fetishize him do worry me. It's become a joke to say "I get my news from The Daily Show," but I find that scary, not funny.
Mr. Stewart provides commentary on the news -- from one perspective, to the exclusion of others -- and if that's all the information you use to form opinions, you are not an informed citizen or voter.
Good luck Mr. Stewart and thanks for your great work!

Maybe Williams should become Jon Stewart's replacement on the Daily Show? Seriously. It would give Williams a chance to publicly refer to and poke fun at his own foibles plus he is a funny guy, and I could see how his commentary on others could be really funny yet penetrating (as is Jon Stewart). Williams would need an attitude adjustment off of highborn and lofty towards repentant sinner, but he needs to do this anyway. Jon Stewart could even ease him in by having him currently join the Daily Show as one of Jon's correspondents, e.g. "senior anchor correspondent" or "senior credibility correspondent" or "senior fabulist", and he could make some really good zingers stick because the audience would know he had been there. Would take some deft writing to chart the course right, "self-mocking and admitted exaggerator but now being really honest". It might be a path back, and even if not it might be a path that would work for the Daily Show.
Is Jon Stewart replacing Brian Williams ?
What a coincidence!!!!
What a coincidence!!!!
I'm still amazed at how such a coarse, boorish person can rise to stardom, and God knows many do. It's a sad commentary on his adoring audience.
2
I am probably one of the few commenters who has never seen Jon Stewart and had no interest in watching him just for the reasons you mentioned in your comments. It is unfortunate that we have stooped so low in entertainment today and there are no role models any more
1
I never watched Jon Stewart nor did I have any interest in doing so just for the reasons you mentioned above. I thought he was in poor taste and it does not speak highly of our society that he was so popular. Unfortunately, anything goes today and I feel sorry for young people that they do not have more quality programming in which to view. I feel we have really stooped really low.
1
Why would you even comment, if you've clearly got no clue about what you're commenting on.
2
Funny guy. But what he did wasn't news.
that's right, he commented on and satirized the news. did you watch the show?
3
I love Jon Stewart on the Daily Show and hope he finds another outlet for his comic genius. I trust his replacement will be wonderful as well as long as the gritty sarcastic satire remains intact.
Let's just hope Bill Maher has no such desire to leave.... I couldn't bare to loose both of them!
Let's just hope Bill Maher has no such desire to leave.... I couldn't bare to loose both of them!
2
Please don't infer that Maher and Stewart are from the same cloth. Jon Stewart is a truly funny comedian commenting on current events with an emphasis on politics. Maher is the Democratic version of the Tea Party. Big difference is the Tea Party is funny while actually being stupid. Maher is stupid while trying to be funny. He spends a great deal of the time degrading his audience for groaning at his stupid material.
How about Seth Meyers for Jon's replacement? Tina Fey? Joel McHale?
How about Seth Meyers for Jon's replacement? Tina Fey? Joel McHale?
Now, unlike Brian Williams, this is one guy who shouldn't be allowed to go--except if he plans to run for President. If he does, he'll get my vote and, I'm sure, millions more from people who see him more qualified than anyone currently planning to run which, I admit, isn't saying a lot. I mean, what's more laughable than a lot of what goes on in the White House and, even more so, in Congress.
Maybe I'll start watching again. I stopped when Stewart became news. Maybe he is taking a cue from Brian Williams.
Always enjoyed the "DS" as funny biting satire. Along the way, Stewart actually got serious at times. Now he leaves on top. There is no " Jon Stewart" out there to take his place, now even Lyin' Brian Williams as is touted. Thanks Jon for doing a great job and to assemble thousands in Washington, the first time I had attended any rally since the Anti-War movement back in the 70s. I still remember " if we amplify everything, then we hear nothing.." If we are all yelling at the same time, the message gets washed out. I learned that from Jon. Wish that Congress and the 24 hr newsyakkers would.
1
It's understandable. Jon Stewart has been hosting The Daily Show for a long time while watching others move on in their careers to bigger challenges. I would imagine at this point hosting that show for him is like being on auto-pilot. That can't be gratifying for him anymore. As a fan of the show I'll miss him, but I'd rather see him move on to new material then stay stagnate and slowly fade away. His comic wit is too rare to squander.
3
I am sad to see Mr. Stewart leave. Mr. Stewart and the NYT are really my only two media outlets on a daily basis. I have enjoyed the media journey with Mr. Stewart.
1
Jon, you may want to move on. But what about me?
You got it wrong: I do deserve a restless host.

Who would be he perfect replacement for Jon Stewart? It's obvious: Brian Williams. He has a wicked wit.
Wipe that smile off your face, Mike Huckabee!

It amuses, amazes and depresses me how consistently the media mischaracterizes the Daily Show. To be fair, quite a large number of its viewers make the same mistake.
The Daily Show is not satirizing our political process. The Daily Show is satirizing the media's coverage of our political process, among other things. It is not a news program that happens to be funny. It is a media criticism program that uses satire to illustrate and highlight how laughably bad our mass media have become.

I'm sorry to see Mr. Stewart go, but 16 years is a long time and besides needing a rest, I'm sure he needs a change. Great minds usually do.
I'd be interested to see a female take over the reins on this show. It's time.
I'd be interested to see a female take over the reins on this show. It's time.
Jon Stewart brought something sorely lacking in broadcast journalism and rarely found outside of the Daily Show progeny - critical thinking. This shone through especially in the War hysteria in the last decade, when his was one of very few sane and level voices. He brought judgment to his review of the zeitgeist, by scoffing the Right Wing's adulation of W's flight deck antics; by holding up the disinformation from Don Rumsfeld for well deserved ridicule; by satirizing the career at the expense of country tactics of the Wolfowitz's, Bremer's, .... the whole cats of characters. Jon saved his sharpest barbs for Dick Cheney, his dark vision, and his obsessive secrecy and paranoia. For those of us who were listening, he saved us from some of the worst effects of the fearmongerers and power hungry in those years.
It's fitting that Jon's show on Monday would bring the same balance and judgment to current events. Scorning the media's obsessive coverage of Brian William's faux pas in conflating an attack on a helicopter convoy with an attack on the very helicopter he was in, he drew the contrast with the reams and varieties of serious falsehoods from Bush Administration officials that brought the country into its longest War. Jon of course did is so elegantly and pithily "Finally, someone is being held to account for lying about the war in Iraq."
Jonny, we knew ye well, and you redeemed the sorry news media during this century. Thank you.

Jon Stewart -- we will really miss your compassionate sanity and your humor, that brought us comfort during the political insanity all around. I'm sorry to have gone through most of the GWB presidency before learning of your show, which I always taped so I could watch it the next day.
He just found out that NBC should have been his target for among other misdemeanors, Brian Williams lies - while Jon was beating up on FOX and his pal Bill O'Reilly. :) Last heard from Stewart, "gloooom. . ."
we've lost our court jester... who will speak truth to power?
1
All my best to you Jon Stewart. However I will miss your funny but true commentary regarding the insanity in our country-most especially your digs against FOX news.
Oh my goodness I'm going to miss him. I just hope he'll do something else I get to watch and love as much as I do the Daily Show. The only sane person on Television - all that's left now are Weather Forecast Theatrics.
In lieu of her usual semi-civil "good morning", my teenage daughter just wailed, "I can't believe Jon Stewart's leaving The Daily Show!" and stormed out. And I totally understand. As a family, we are often drawn together in a huddle around one of our computers (such is ex-pat life), answering the call of, "Did you see this on The Daily Show...?" We'll miss you, Jon. Bon Courage.
47
Such a sad news. I hope is for the best. He still has a lot to give. I´ll wait to see.
I have come to rely on "The Daily Show" to expose the hypocrasy, inaccuracy and often stupidity of the icons of American and world culture and politics. I hope that the extremely talented group o f writers and the brilliant group of video editors will continue to work their magic with another host. But I wonder if it is possible to replace the passion, intellect, and comic genius of Mr. Stewart. I also can't wait to see what he does next -- Stewart for Congress in 2018?
1
I'm guessing Fox's Bill O'Reilly will miss Jon Stewart more than he'll ever admit.
1
It will be big shoes to filled. May be Samantha Bee or Aaif Mandvi will be good to try.
1
This is much more serious than the loss of a tv comedian. There is no one in the media who interviews with the intelligence and integrity of Jon Stewart. No one who serves as a media watchdog with such grace and humor. No one with the well earned international respect. His disciples are smart and entertaining but none have at the core his passionate voice. There have been many great Daily Show writers and producers but without him at the center America loses a vital cultural force.
2
Can he and Brian Williams switch jobs?
2
Given the timing, can we start speculation about a Letterman and Stewart presidential ticket.....
He will leave an unfillable hole. I think he severely underestimates just how important he is. No one else is as fearless. No one else is as articulate. No one else can build flawless case after flawless case against hypocrisy and corruption packaged within the constraints of tv show.
7
With more integrity and intelligence than almost every mainstream journalist in our country, Jon Stewart will be sorely missed.
He's hilarious as well!

He is an anchor of sanity in a sea of hypocrisy. How will we survive without him?
2
I pay for good journalism, like from the NYT, and thus have better access to quality information than most. However, even for me Jon Stewart's work on the Daily Show is an indispensable source. While done with humour, the balanced a fresh perspectives it brings are an example for all true journalists. I am glad that many viewers, especially younger ones, have had this experience, that will hopefully impact their expectations and how the value news for a long time to come.
6
He's a genius and ready to evolve. There are better things ahead.
2
No one could have convinced the USA that TV news had become an entertainment wasteland that impersonated journalism and spread disinformation other than this man. The fact he wound up being seen as a trustworthy information source demonstrates the corrosive effects of TV news on political culture in the US.
Thank God for BBC, Al Jazeera, and (somewhat) PBS.

Kudos to Jon Stewart for a long successful run. He joins other great that departed at the top of their game. I'm sure he has other plans. Best wishes.
1
Mr. Stewart provided me with more information and more laughs than any other program on television. Thank you for your outstanding work, sir, and I respect your decision and your reasons, whatever they may be.
4
Is Brian Williams ready to take over?
2
Not a moment too soon!
We need someone to replace Jon who will take the same assignment: to tell the truth and expose lies and absurdities and get mad, while also being smart and funny. There may not be a million people who can do this, but there are surely some. My top nominee right now is John Oliver. His new show is great, but it's only once a week, and that's not enough.
4
There might be a spot for him at NBC.
1
Jon's genius was in connecting the dots, pointing out both the obvious and the absurd. He is a brave man, something we are sorely lacking these days. I will so miss him showing me how ridiculous politics can be. He deserves a rest, but the next Presidential non-race will be positively boring. Thanks for all the years of great wit and glorious wisdom.
4
Hopefully Jon will read some of these comments and realize that we don't want him to leave quite, yet. Please, Jon, don't go! This is selfish of me, but I feel like he should stay on The Daily Show until after the 2016 elections. He is a national treasure and brought a much needed satirical perspective to keep the national political conversation honest and from being spun to much by the spinners. We as a nation will be poorer without Jon's "daily" media presence and involvement in the national debate. It is a sad day indeed.
3
The timing is right for Jon Stewart and Brian Williams to switch jobs.
1
How on earth can we make it through the 2016 Presidential election without the comic relief provided by Jon and his crew? Uggggggghhhhhh. On the other hand, I don't blame the guy. He is probably tired after all these years of doing the show, maybe feeling like it isn't so worth it any more. I wish him only the best and I hope he finds another way to keep us thinking and laughing at the same time. Thank you, Jon. Thank you for everything. P.S. Thank you for being from New Jersey and for being willing to say that fact often. :)
5
Another pretty face bites the dust.
1
Mr. Guggenheim, you cannot be familiar with The Daily Show and Jon Stewart.
While his face may be pretty, his material is brilliant, his commentary insightful and biting, and his viewpoints thoughtful and reasoned.
He is irreplaceable.

1
Jon, please say it isn't so! It's hard enough to handle your absence when you're on vacation. I can't bear to think of days, weeks and months without your brilliant insights. We need you!!!!!
6
Would it be too much to hope that Mr. Stewart and Mr. Wilson, who are great friends and socially conscious, would join forces and deliver the kind of prime-time and/or Sunday news show the vast majority of Americans want? Maybe bring Rachel Maddow into it? Now that would be worth watching if it was readily available to everyone and not just another make-as-much-money-as-you-can endeavor.
3
Jon Stewart kept the country sane during the Bush years. So sorry to see him go.
9
Loved his impression of GWB chortling. heh heh heh
Replacing Jon will be tough, but I vote for Samantha Bee.
2
Good luck to Jon Stewart. A man who can be counted on to give us the truth in all matters. And, some good laughs too. He will really be missed on "The Daily Show" but, he has so much talent and is so smart that he will be making more movies and TV appearances. We will all miss you! All the very best wishes for John Stewart and his family.
3
Replacement: John Oliver getting out of HBO contract taking over the Daily Show.
3
Good-bye Jon. You have helped me by making me laugh when I felt despair.
5
My wife and I will miss this show but hope he will land somewhere else good. 2014 - 1st Colbert and now Stewart. Here's to you Jon!
4
Nooooo!!!! I know it's a comedy show (many skits had me laughing until I cried), but he was also able to cast a news story or incident in the perfect light to make a point with wit and sarcasm making a piint better than any "real" news show. Every king needs a jester. He will be missed. He is appreciated.
4
"Incarnation of Socrates"? Oh, for God's sake.
I am surprised at the adulation the Times article expresses regarding Mr. Stewart. His show has been occasionally on target in a rather sophomoric way, I'll grant you. Whether he is spouting some pseudo-intellectual take on a matter or in the short skits by his current group of "on the scene" reporters, but for the most part he cannot keep up with his serious guests and the questions he asks and the points he makes are, in general, insipid or juvenile.
I Watched him for years and slowly turned away as he began pontificating on world and national issues, not because of his sagacity but because he held the megaphone. In other words, the man began to believe that his opinions were erudite and on target, while to me he began to believe the myth that his "take" was cogent and important. Colbert, he isn't.

I don't have cable T.V. so I never watched the Daily Show. I do recall, however, that the first time I saw Mr. Stewart was on some website with a video feed of his program. I laughed out loud while sitting alone at my computer. Again and again I encountered videos of him on his show and every single time I laughed.
I am not a fan of sitcoms or stand-up comics and it takes a lot to make me laugh. The writing and Mr. Stewart's delivery of those words are both sophisticated and hilarious. He is, without a doubt, the funniest man on television. Clever, incisive, bold and brilliant.

4
It's the end of the world as we know it. First Colbert Report and now Jon Stewart.
4
I've always loved the show, my only bit of concern is about the portion of his audience that relies exclusively, or almost exclusively on it for news. It's easy to trash the network news broadcasts, but there is still the PBS Newshour and various good print media to rely on for actual news.
Jon, thank you and best of luck. You did a great service to your country and humanity.
3
Bring! Back! John! Oliver! ASAP!
1
Please Jon, I am on bended knees. You saved my sanity through the Bush years, and your show continues to lift me up night after night.
The Daily Show may go one, but NOBODY is like you. We know how brilliantly talented your writing staff is, but it is you buddy.

Dear Jon,
Thank you for making the last 16 harsh years hilarious. Your reach was broad. I am now approaching 60 and no longer remember how I discovered you but was amazed that late night faux news could be the best thing on TV. I spread the word to my friends that they needed to check out The Daily Show. They did. Your show was discussed every morning at the office. My mother, well she was a lady's lady and into her 80's. I thought you might be a little too much for her. Boy was I wrong. She didn't go to bed before seeing you and Colbert. After the Supreme Court elected W you kept us sane. My husband and I went to your rally in DC, bought your book for my nephew's Christmas present, and went to your movie. We are devestated that you won't be a part of our Daily life but will look forward to seeing, reading, and hearing from you in the future. Have a good rest. You shouldered our burden heroically. Long live the King.

It's fitting that the tone of this article is that of an obituary, because it's going to feel like a death in the family when Jon Stewart is no longer around to end my day with. He's helped keep us sane in times when nothing seems to make sense, and the only alternatives would simply be to cry or ignore the news entirely.
75
They were the clarion call of indignation during the Bush years! I think he feels disillusioned by the Democrats and the lack of change. Or maybe that's me.
Taking Brian Williams spot?
Run for office Jon, you will have my vote.
3
Kudos to Stewart for a job well done over so many years. It's unfortunate, since he is leaving, that he didn't make his decision before Oliver left for HBO. Oliver would have been an awesome replacement. Oliver signed a 2-year contract with HBO. Not clear whether he could come back to The Daily Show later this year, even if he wanted to. Maybe Brian Williams as Stewart's replacement??? That would be funny, in more ways than one.
Dear Jon,
Thanks for the memories from all of US.
You will be missed.
(we know you are not dead, but a part of US dies with your departure.)

While I am an admirer of Jon Stewart's amazing gift for satire and humor and political analysis- I'm sorry to have to say this- I still hold a bit of a grudge. His 2000 election "coverage" often made no distinctions between Gore and Bush, presenting them as though they were the same choice. I'm glad he grew to know the difference.
Best wishes for the next adventure.
Best wishes for the next adventure.
On a bus from Reykjavik to the airport a few years ago, my husband and I sat next to an Icelandic meteorologist (an important profession in Iceland!). She began one sentence: "Well, as Jon Stewart says..." Turns out that he's quoted - and will be missed - in Iceland, too!
5
I see where Samantha bee is given some votes to replace Jon. Oh wouldn't that be wonderful, a Canadian voice saying stop going everywhere. The last time Canadians and Americans listened to each other was Korea. That resulted in a split Nation. Maybe Canadians should remain writers.
He will be missed. It is a sad state of affairs that our world is run by lunatics and a large number of people have to get the news they trust from a comedy network.
No! No! No! I've been watching The Daily Show for years. Jon Stewart is the only guy I trust to tell me like it is. ABC NBC, CBS, Fox and CNN can't hold a candle to what Stewart and the writers accomplish every night. This news has completely ruined my day.
4
"During an October 2004 appearance on the CNN program “Crossfire,” Mr. Stewart criticized its hosts Paul Begala and Tucker Carlson as “partisan hacks” who were participating in mere “theater,” and said to them: “Stop hurting America.”
That's the pot calling the kettle black. From the Liberal perspective, that's exactly what Stewart is and did.

2
Negative. The major distinction is that the Daily Show never pretends to be a serious news show. Stewart makes a point of that during the debate (and in subsequent others, when similar charges are leveled).
Regarding "from a liberal perspective" Paul Begala was the liberal voice on Crossfire. It was about party hackery in general, not left/ right.

1
I do want Jon Stewart to have a school night dinner with his family but it's his patriotic duty to stay! He's the only "newscaster" I really trust. Couldn't he, at least, do an 8-week tour of duty before the 2016 elections? Otherwise, how are the millennials going to even know who's running?
4
"Say it ain't so Joe!"
1
Jon Stewart---your brilliant mind and unique observations often made their way to the top of my news feed and I have enjoyed watching you in this manner. However, to this day, I have no idea what time your show even aired, so I have never watched it---and I consider myself a fan.
My point?
Take your considerable brilliance and put it somewhere front and center so it doesn't just rely on viral relevancy to make its ways to the masses. If there is a God, he put you on this earth to help us all question our assumptions and I cab only hope you do it best do that in other venues going forward.
Onward and forward---and congrats on this new chapter!

The timing of Brian Williams sabbatical and Stewart's announcement could not have been more timely. Put Stewart in the spot so we know what we are getting!
1
There's a temporary opening for anchor on the NBS evening news...
1
Do all of the folks who want Stewart to replace Brian Williams realize that would be anathema to Stewart? These commenters really didnt understand the thrust and tone of The Daily Show at all.
Which leaves a bigger void - Jon Stewart off the air for even one show, or Brian Williams for six months?
4
When I watch Jon Stewart I can't help but think there must be a nice Jewish mother out there who must be extremely proud of her son! "Who knew my Jon could be so talented!"
In my mind, Jimmy Fallon, Andy Cohen and Jon Stewart seem like the most likable guys on TV; the type of personalities you are happy to invite into your home.
Jon will be sorely missed. With more free time perhaps you will pay me and my husband a visit. Oh and sure bring the family!

Stewart reported the news, and we laughed. Because reality looks so odd next to the Big TV Media blather which has become more and more silly over the years, without ever being funny.
3
I liked the Daily Show 16-17 years ago, when it seemed to skewer both the left and the right. But over time, the show moved too far to the left for my tastes. I stopped watching the show long ago. I won't miss it.
The Colbert Report was a much greater loss. So far, its replacement hasn't grabbed me. I guess I am not in the target audience for either the Daily Show, or whatever the replacement show for Colbert is called.

1
What will we do for accurate reporting?
6
PBS Newshour for a one-hour report on newsworthy topics rather than puff pieces, presented by professional journalists rather than by uninformed news readers, then a dose of "The Daily Show" ... that's the way to get news via television. Stewart's departure will be noted. Good luck and Godspeed, Jon.
5
It's a little strange saying this about a comedy show, but broadcast journalism while be quite a bit poorer when Jon Stewart leaves the Daily Show.
3
I nominate him to take Brian Williams' place. Let him be the executive producer, too, of course. I bet that would get viewership up for the evening newscast.
A clown has the best news show... It says a lot about America.
5
It's ironic that network news is mostly entertainment (of a very dull sort) and you get more real news from Jon Stewart's show, which is meant to be (and is) entertainment.
3
Well, my face dropped when I read that news this morning. I’m just a recent convert to his show (what was I doing all those years?!) but, sure, compared to the generally awful beyond words news pundits and commentators that Americans are stuck with – don’t get me started again on the endlessly hateful Fox News – Stewart seemed like a genuinely great guy – passionate, articulate, witty, sarcastic, and willing to champion personal causes.
A person, in other words, and not just another automaton obeying the network overlords. (His show sidekicks, on the other hand – Meh. Collectively, they could all disappear without trace, and nobody’d miss their shtick, which doesn’t work as well.)
Credit, too, to the writers and crew; no ship rows itself, after all, and they’ve certainly researched, written and played their part in the show’s success, too.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if this voice of reason would run for political office! His credentials rank high: honesty, integrity and concern for everyman!
4
He couldn't be elected dog catcher. He's honest.
Snide was Jon Stewarts take on things. Stewart was not my so called "cup of tea" . Real news is a serious subject, especially in this 24 hour news cycle. Mr. Stewart and Brian Williams, Fox news all degrade the seriousness of events. It used to be simple, See it report it and be impartial. Mr. Stewart was a comedian not a newscaster. The dumbing down of America continues when we take comics too seriously. Just my feelings on this subject.
3
Isn't it odd that two of the biggest news stories yesterday were about news people?
Any thoughts on Brian Williams replacing Jon Stewart? I mean, he's obviously never going to be taken seriously again. So maybe comedy will take him? (I feel bad for the guy!)

17
A key part of being a highly visible member of the media is the ability to pump war. Fox, MSNBC, the NY Times all have done this. Steward cannot be relied on to do this.
Williams couldn't replace Stewart. Stewart has credibility. Williams does not.
1
Maybe he will run for president!
I just couldn't deal with his anger. The truth is, I'm just not as angry at the country as Mr. Stewart and his vast army of supporters are.
8
Then you must not be paying attention to the news.
2
Angry at the country? What are you talking about?
2
We're not angry at the country, we're angry on behalf of the country we love for all of those reasons that Jon and his crew have so brilliantly discussed and held up to scrutiny under the harsh, true light of satire.
1
I hope Jessica Williams will take over the show. She's funny, witty, sharp, and young.
2
Celebration time at "Fox News"
4
He will be greatly missed. He and Colbert helped me "survive" the tragic Bush/Cheney years. Don't know what I would have done without their humor. It's hard to imagine who could fill his shoes.
4
I'm heartbroken. First Steven and now Jon.
5
You guys are so gullible. Actually, he's being suspended for telling the truth.
3
This was the only news show I enjoyed watching, what am I going to do now watch Fox News? I think not.
3
In 2016 we are going to have Bush v. Clinton again, and no Stewart to navigate the comedy, irony and yes, tragedy of this ?
4
I nearly had a heart attack when I heard the news, coming so soon after Colbert's leaving... This has been a season of heartache. My funnybone is numb. I feel like I'm never going to stop mourning.
In a few years the youngsters won't know what I'm talking about when I say their magical names.
In a few years the youngsters won't know what I'm talking about when I say their magical names.
3
Jon Stewart is the smartest man in America. He knows how to hone in on the truth.
4
Very funny man. Stood in line years ago in bitter cold to see his show before it became a phenomenon. However, not fond of his stepping back from his stances by continually saying I'm just a comedian. Also, think it is sad that a great many people list him as their predominant source of news. In addition, although in no way responsible for BJ's "misrememberings," think the whole atmosphere of infotainment shows has blurred lines between facts, opinion and entertainment.
1
One can only carry out satire for so long before becoming disenfranchised by the seemingly unchangeable. Mr. Stewart has seemed a bit exhausted by the unlimited stupidity of those who make his viewpoint essential. His interview with Mr. Huckabee was an indication of his frustration. He was barely able to tolerate the eagerness of Huckabee's presentation of his book which was seemingly too offensive to even joke about. Mr. Stewart is a hero in my eyes and a mirror of integrity in the face of folly that I will greatly miss.
105
This is always the problem with the (important) role of the skeptic. Eventually the skeptic has to take a side and then the satire doesnt quite work as intended. Stewart I suspect knew this all along.
"Mr. Stewart has seemed a bit exhausted by the unlimited stupidity of those who make his viewpoint essential." Well-said, Michael.
1
But like a bad penny, Huckleberry's b-a-a-c-k . . .!
As a replacement, I nominate John Oliver (pleeeze, pay him whatever he wants to come back!!!). As a second, Jordan Klepper.
I just don't know how I'm going to get my news now without Stewart and Colbert.
I just don't know how I'm going to get my news now without Stewart and Colbert.
2
16 years has passed so quickly... Who will help us live through the next GOP President, which WILL happen... We are surely doomed...!!!
2
When the poor blood test results came in I made a rule that I could not watch The Daily Show or Colbert Report without doing an hour of exercise. In three months I was in great health again. Witty, smart and good for your health, Jon Stewart makes the world a better place.
3
Jon Stewart's real accomplishment was to get at least a slice of the population to question what they were being sold by elected officials and the corporate media. He showed people the power of derogatory laughter. His work is done and a multitude of others have already picked up the banner. Just take a look at Twitter, Facebook, and the many blogs out there where modern day pamphleteers are making a joke out of the seriously deranged goings-on of our economic and social elite. He injected the serum into the body politic - now it's up to us to do what we know needs doing. Thanks, Jon.
5
I wonder who will replace him, he did a great job, now its time to move on to bigger and better things.....
One of the funniest, saddest things I've ever witnessed was when Jon Stewart performed stand-up at the university during the Bush years and announced that he had figured out why the president was so successful:
"George Bush. Doesn't give a s&*t. About you and me."
It got a HUGE laugh and sustained applause from the mostly 18- to 24-year-old audience. Why? Because after months and months of patriotic pablum from an administration hell-bent on going to war in Iraq, someone was finally telling these kids the truth. You could feel the relief and gratitude.
He got another big laugh when he mentioned the Iraq war and a kid cheered. Stewart noted wryly that the ROTC had offices right there in the building and invited him to go sign up after the show.
No wonder younger audiences trust him. Some of us older fans, too.

Look on the bright side .... Maybe Beck or Hannity can take over the show!
John Stewart and the Daily Show under his tenure are national treasures. First Colbert and now this, a double hit.
3
This really hurts. Who will scatter the cockroaches of lobbyists, purchased politicians, lawless bankers, lying cable anchors, corporate destruction, and so much more. This country is being sold out by so many for the few. Jon faithfully shined light on them Who do we turn to for the truth.......Not to mention daily laughs about our fate.
6
It's time. Give the show to Bassem Youssef. Stewart/Carell/Colbert provided some groundwork for Youssef; someone really interesting minus the Hollywood High slant.
Jon Stewart for President campaign starts now.
3
In all seriousness I suggest Brian Williams to start a new show in Comedy central.
Not a fan but his career as a news anchor is over and now he could start a real news / comedy there. He will be good at it !

Jon Stewart 2116
A president who knows how to deal with fools.
A president who knows how to deal with fools.
Ok so I call today to cancel cable. For a news junkie what's left I can't see on youtube.
1
Perhaps he would consider a gig over at NBC...I hear there may be an opening...
1
When the news is so bad that all you want to do is cry, I watch Jon Stewart before turning in and always manage to laugh. There's no one else like him and I hope whatever he goes on to will keep the faith with what he's done up to now.
1
While I hate to see him leave, I hope the Daily Show that continues after Jon will drop the celebrity interviews.
2
All I can say is thank you Jon.
I understand the restlessness and the demands of the show. You've provided a funny and thoughtful take during a period when we all needed it most.
Wish you time and joy with your family and future endeavors.

As a European who hasn't skipped a show in the last 7 years, I will miss John Stewart constantly reminding us that the US are a nation of greys.
Neither the Great Satan nor the righteous defender of humanity, just a complex nation facing its extremisms and contradictions. Normal people.
That was pretty important during the Bush years.

Us level-headed Americans needed reminding as well. You will be missed, Mr. Stewart
When there's not one thing funny about the news anymore, Stewart has a point, doesn't he?
1
In a nutshell.
Stewart opens the show by addressing the home audience saying "You know something these people don't... We'll get to it but first we have a show to do."
Wonderful usage of the time warp and trust in the news machine he was yelling into.
Where it was "Breaking news" on the Network news "This just in..." said Scott Pelley, and thus I'll remember where I was when I first heard... Just like the Robin Williams news.
Apropos of something (?) or nothing(?) that the guest was David Alexrod. I don't think it means Stewart will run. But if he could take an active role in electing a candidate... That is a job worthy of his talents, skills and insights.

Jon Stewart made sense of all the craziness that goes on around us with his incisiveness, mixed with humor. The Daily Show has been the place to go to, to get a perspective on things that is not available anywhere else on the networks. It will never be the same once he moves on, no matter who takes over the Daily Show. No one can convince me otherwise. Thank you and Good Luck, Jon.
2
Great talent, supported of course by talented writers and on-air collaborators, but his shtick is the same day after day, so I can see that he is ready to do something else, whatever the reasons for his leaving this show now or shortly.
1
Simply the Best . . . Fare Thee Well Jon Stewert . . .
And Thank You for helping keep them "honest(er)" if not more jocular!
Or is that "Truthier"?

Brian and Jon have similar philosophies. Hey Brian, what are you doing for the next 6 months?
I'd vote for Jon Stewart 2016!

Jon Stewart was a breeze of fresh air during dark years when American mass media became voice/image of state controlled comunicados. Heydays of Christiane Amanpour and Wolf Britz delivering Pentagon misinformation disguised as news.
Behind the facade of humor, Jon Stewart was the only voice to deliver news closer to reality. He was the right person, at the right time, doing the right thing. Vaya con Dios, Jon!

The Michael Jordon of satire. Interesting to see what he will do next.
Jessica Williams, Sandra Bee, Kristen Schaal--they are the future of The Daily Show--witty, smart, sharp, pointed, serious, and achingly funny. If Comedy Central is smart, they'll put these women in the forefront.
One word: Trailblazer!

Like many of us I love John Stewart. He kept us sane through the Bush era and continued to show how irreverence, satire and biting commentary could be produced without being mean. Throughout his career on the Daily Show, he said what needed to be said time and time again but always with an underlying love of humanity. And through all of his success and fan adoration, you never got a sense of the man that he, like many others in public view, was becoming full of himself. John Stewart, I thank you, for being one great American and even more, a world class citizen.

I think it's fair to criticize the Daily Show for playing it safe on Mohammad cartoons. You be the judge. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/world/jon-stewart-mohammed-cartoons-2006... Hopefully, Stewart will be bolder after leaving Comedy Central. The best political satire is not constrained by suits in charge of editorial content.
John Stewart and his ilk (Colbert, Mahar, Oliver) are serious about the news and impacting policy. Until you call them on it and then they are just comedians. But, Stewart is one of the funniest.
Good for him. I wish him all the best. He's been a positive force and no doubt will continue to be. May he continue to rally us all toward sanity and preserve his own. Thank you, Jon.

Jon's legacy is firmly intact! During his brilliant tenure he brought sunlight and truth especially during the dark days of journalism when all but the most daring were willing to question and criticize the US's fatal lies and missteps into wars. A consistent and brilliantly funny show that spawned the careers of dozens of talented performers led by a true master.
We will miss you Jon!
We will miss you Jon!
2
I'm sure all of Washington is completely thrilled with Jon's departure.

That was a problem... This still is a problem.

Thank you Jon for all you've done for our country and keeping me sane all these years!

Wouldn't it be great if he got Brian Williams old job? Although I have always loved Lester Holt and would prefer that Holt get the anchor job. Stewart should take Fallon's place as Fallon is not very funny and spent too much time partying after he got the job.
It sounds like Stewart was loved by the left. The majority of US never watched a minute. Just more liberal drivel. Promote only one view and repeat it endlessly. Bush lied. Forget the truth.

I loved Jon's Thanksgiving message: "We are having an old-fashioned Thanksgiving. We are inviting the neighbors over for dinner, then killing them all and taking their houses and land."
And let's not forget Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz's books--"America-(The Book)-The Teacher's Edition: A Citizen's Guide to Democracy Inaction" and "Earth (The Book): A Visitor's Guide to the Human Race."
I gave them as gifts to friends for years. And as a gentile I learned a lot about the Jewish culture--he is a New Yorker through and through--a bridge and tunnel guy from the land of Bruce Springsteen by way of William and Mary.

Although nothing lasts forever, it is a very difficult thing to lose a trusted and familiar face who has delivered both critical insight and humor into our lives four nights a week -- for almost two decades now. When so many institutions have failed us - the institution Jon Stewart transformed the Daily Show into never did. The idea of not having that perceptive perspective to end my day is really a distressing thought. Truthiness has replaced facts in much of the infotainment that masquerades as news these days. Viewers of MSNBC and FOX live in two different realities even while they inhabit the same national geography. We desperately need someone as astute as Jon Stewart satirically speaking truth to power on a daily basis in this country. Between he and Colbert, no amount of spin could escape the 24 hour cycle without being lampooned into submission to reveal its underlying truth. I feel as if we've lost another 'Check and Balance'.
1
Jon's comedic, satirical examination of American politics and life are well worth watching most nights. After all, Congress and politics is often so sad that if we weren't laughing at it, we'd cry.
I find it interesting that politically conservative friends of mine dislike The Daily SHow, often poo-pooing it suggesting it is merely a comedy show. So I reply, the satellite/cable versions of "Fox News Entertainment" programs are actually OpEd shows … not news. Journalistic news from Rupert Murdoch broadcasting are the local affiliate or "Channel 5" classic Cronkite-like delivery where news is journalistically presented without opinion.
I enjoy explaining similarities between their conservative adoration for Hannity, O'Reilly and others and my enjoyment of Stewart on The Daily Show. After all, comedic satire is merely a form of opinion and editorial commentary that has been practiced by the greats like Mark Twain and Will Rodgers.
Jon Stewart for president! I'd vote him in. He be no worse than any of the other "clowns" currently running around Washington DC.

You need new Conservative friends. Many of us like Jon Stewart and John Oliver for the comedic approach to subjects that some people take way too seriously.
Devastated... first Stephen, now Jon. What o what will we do to get through 2016?
1
For me, Jon's humor is an incisive, intelligent way of looking at the news on a world-weary day. He lifts spirits and gives a glimmer of hope to what often seems an untenable--even hopeless--situation. I just love the guy. I don't know what I'll do with my angst with him (and Colbert) gone. I suppose I'll survive; but there will be some essential particle of joy missing from my days.

What will we do NOW?
We only discovered Jon Stewart about 10 years ago, after we moved from the US to the UK, and he has saved our sanity through three presidential elections, especially the lunacy of the Bush-Cheney years.
Over this time America has become increasingly alien to us, between the growing gun culture, the ludicrously petty and illogical bipartisan politics, and the continued obtuseness of certain 'faux' media outlets foisting its belief system on gullible viewers.
This is a dark day indeed, one we'd hoped would never come. We already feel stranded.

Bless you, my son. Go forth and die laughing.

It says much about US that so many revere the likes of Stewart.... the irony and the cynicism define our times. He was only too happy to profit from it and, in the process, help sustain it.
Network news is full of clowns... he was just more open about it than most... but a clown, nonetheless.

It is ironic that on the same day that Brian Williams was suspended without pay for 6 months Jon Stewart announces his departure & is compared by many to Walter Cronkite who was Mr. Williams hero. So Jon Stewart the supposed "fake newsman" will be missed by more people than the supposedly real newsman Brian Williams, obviously the stars must be in some kind of Ironic Alignment.
As sad as I am to see Mr. Stewart leave I hope that he will be able to move on with other pursuits like directing if that's where his heart lies. Rosewater was certainly a good directorial debut & hopefully if he does decide to pursue a career making films he will only get better. The bad thing about his leaving now is his timing because after the fantastic job that John Oliver did filling in for him while he was off directing I'm sure many like myself saw him as the heir apparent.
I would finally just like to say Thank You to Mr. Stewart for all that he did in trying to be what Thomas Jefferson called the 4th Branch of Government - the News - by shining a light on the stories that the 3 networks were never interested in covering & doing so with fairness & Great Wit - you will be MISSED!

I'm looking forward to Jon's next chapter. Thanks for the perceptive wit; we look forward to more and for many years to come.
All I can say is that I am devastated by this news. I get my news from Jon and do not watch network news. I pray bigger and better things await this truly talented man.

"To those who say people wouldn't look; they wouldn't be interested; they're too complacent, indifferent and insulated, I can only reply: There is, in one reporter's opinion, considerable evidence against that contention. But even if they are right, what have they got to lose? Because if they are right, and this instrument is good for nothing but to entertain, amuse and insulate, then the tube is flickering now and we will soon see that the whole struggle is lost. This instrument can teach, it can illuminate; yes, and even it can inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends. Otherwise, it's nothing but wires and lights in a box. There is a great and perhaps decisive battle to be fought against ignorance, intolerance and indifference. This weapon of television could be useful." - Edward R. Murrow
Please, John Oliver, step up!
Please, John Oliver, step up!

In October/ Nov 2014, I did not understand the Moreland Commission scandal until I heard Jon Stewart explain it. Based on that, I voted against Andrew Cuomo's reelection. And I voted for his Republican challenger, Rob Astorino.
I will miss Jon Stewart, not only for making me laugh, but for making me think. Yes, he was critical of Fox News. But he was also not shy about criticizing President Obama over the conditions at the Veterans Administration. His "serious" form of comedy affected change in the VA and also getting needed legislation passed to help 9/11 First Responders, after Jon Stewart shamed Congressional Republicans to help them.
Allow me to nominate, as Mr. Stewart's replacement, Ms. Jessica Williams, the young African-American woman who currently works as a Correspondent on the Daily Show. I say that not because she is Black, but because she has at least some of the same qualities of comedic sense and seriousness that Mr. Stewart embodies.
BTW, I am a 60-year-young White Guy.
I wish Jon Stewart every bit of further success in his life.

Jon is an amazing talent and wonderful change of pace from usual comedy or news. He allowed me to survive the Bush years. I wish him the best of luck.
2
Jon Stewart, godspeed! Some nights I felt you were all we had left: you got me through some very difficult years.
You deserve whatever rest you seek.
You deserve whatever rest you seek.
4
I hate to see Jon go, of course, but kudos to him for knowing the right time and leaving at the top of his game.
2
The laudatory pre-morbid NYT obit -- mark of true American success.
Since the days of Aristophanes, satire has been an integral part of healthy, democratic cultures. Jon Stewart is an important part of this noble tradition and fully deserves the recognition he has received to date. I hope his successor continues the good work.

As Shakespeare quoted, tangled webs and deception. It can get out of control.
Maybe the Kochs got him out! They're sponsors aren't they?
Who will stand up to the darkside now?

Good Show and Good Job by Jon Stewart.
Obviously, Steward leaving the Daily Show is directly
linked to Stephen Colbert leaving his show The Colbert Report.
The huge popularity of the Colbert Report and its
lead in to the Daily Show has given The Daily Show
a huge ratings boost.
Once Stephen Colbert bails, the Daily Show ratings
will take a huge hit.
Jon Stewart is wisely getting out on a high note...

I'm not even American. But I love Jon Stewart. There are copyright issues with my country, so I could never just go to the Daily Show website and see his latest rant. I had to wait till some generous person (Thanks guys!) put episodes on youtube.
Jon. It's your life, and you know best what's good for you. But what are we going to do??

Unlike Obama and many other elected officials he interviewed, Stewart often really was the smartest guy in the room.
One can only be part of Hollywood for so long and remain untarnished by the experience. He is exiting very wealthy of course, and good for Stewart.
This is simply not true. A ploy, a ruse to get millions of bereft fans clamoring for 'Rosewater'. Or perhaps sheer exhaustion from the herculean effort of digging in that endless pile of manure created by bad actors on the world stage to present us with a shiny pony 4 nights a week. :(
We haven't seen the last of Mr. Stewart. The next act is gonna be great.

5
Jon Stewart: you are the best! Your hilarious 17 year dissection of American political and social hypocrisy puts you in the pantheon with Mark Twain and H.L. Mencken.
8
This is a sad day for comedy. Whoever takes his place will have an awful big pair of shoes to fill. I wish him the best and thank him for all the LOL moments he has provided over the years. Jon Stewart redefined the meaning of "brilliant"!
6
While I fully understand Jon Stewart's personal (and maybe professional) reasons for wanting a change, I still say : "NOOOOOOO!!!!" As the Irish Rovers used to say, "Don't just say goodbye; say ... I've changed my mind, I'm not leaving!" If the show continues, I can't imagine who could fill those shoes - that is, if he wears shoes ... we've never actually seen his feet on camera ... hmmm.
3
Jon Stewart has been my go to person in this age of crony journalism across the world. He will be dearly missed.
4
His Brian Williams/Iraq War segment was pure genius.
2
Stewart's David vs. Fox News' Goliath...I miss him already.
7
NOW WHAT! We love this show and now it's going off the air. Sad day for TV sad day for me. The satire has all the truth hidden within... I'll miss the team.
2016 elections will not be interesting without Jon or Steven. Will also miss the great guest. His team is one of the best that I have seen in a long time. I kept telling my partner whenever we get to NYC again we have to try to get tickets for a taping... Guess we don't need to visit NYC again...

It's not going off the air; it's getting a new host. He wasn't the host when the show started, so it will be the show's third.
It's probably not going off the air, I saw no mention of that in the article But it will surely be difficult to find a suitable replacement, unless John Oliver would like to come back to permanently fill in as host.....
The promotion of his show as FAKE news is a sublime joke in itself. The disgraced Mr. Williams and his ilk traffic in fake news. There is/was nothing fake about the issues Jon and his team took on in a clear-eyed and rational way. His/their honesty and forthrightness is why he/they are regarded with as much respect as Cronkite was in his day.
16
Good to see someone praise his team. He deserves a lot of credit, but he's not a one man enterprise.
As a millennial for whom "the most trusted man in America" has always been Jon Stewart, this is truly devastating. Now my generation knows what it was like for our parents when Walter Cronkite retired from the CBS Evening News in 1981.
6
Some people have already started suggesting successors, so I see it's not too soon. Yes luring John Oliver back wouldn't be a bad idea, but I have a better one. How about Jessica Williams? I won't deny I'd love to see a black woman at the helm, but it's more than that. She's hilarious and gives great interviews. I'd tune in to watch her every night. Think about it, Comedy Central.
And I should add: Jon, you will be missed.
And I should add: Jon, you will be missed.
6
Oliver needs to stay right where he is. Reports on big pharma, beauty pageants and other targets need to be told.
1
Jon Stewart once again proved how astute he is. Quitting on top....how many have the wisdom to do that.
If isn't already, he will be a considered a legend in TV broadcast considering the new talent that he brought to fore on his show.

We will soooo miss you .... we looked upon you for the real news and also a great laugh ... thanks to you we could believe there was /is still hope for America .. and that there are still intelligent people around! God speed Jon and hope you enjoy your new life and spend more time with your family ... the best of Irish from Sylvia who lives in Bangkok ... Italian husband Adriano also adores your show ...
2
A cursory glance at the many comments suggests he should "throw his hat into the ring" come primary time. Democrats are desperately looking for a good alternative to the Queen of Chaos and the Native American from Harvard. Although the latter might improve her chances with Stewart as VP.
1
Only Lucy has the passion and the voice to express our dismay: "AAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRGH!"
5
It is obvious who Jon Stewarts replacement should be -- Brian Williams. e pears to be ut of a jobs; has some knowledge about the news business and knows how to fabricated a story to his advantage,
1
Can't help feeling selfish (while also ever-grateful)… but HOW will we survive the almost-real-news (reality?) that we'll be left with? Mr. Stewart's wit, sarcasm, charm, intellect and facial/body contortions - the only way I made it through years of a seemingly endless bombardment of bad news. Usually laughing so hard I cried. Now, I'm just crying.
5
Well, that's it: We're doomed.
9
I, too, would hope that Jon Stewart follows the path of Al Franken. Some sanity in the Senate would be welcome.
9
He was one of the best interviewers around, always looking to phrase the question that would take us to the heart of the matter. Evasions and dishonest answers were challenged instead of being accepted as just the other side of the issue. There was always the hope that some Jim Cramer figure would have the heart of his existence laid bare, even if only for a minute.
Most journalists would fail at what he does if they tried, but they dont. He is this generation's chief incarnation of Socrates, and we are all fortunate that our current establishment usually deals with Socratic questioners by avoiding them and their questions rather than offing them.

Wow!
After reading all these comments, maybe Jon should run for President.
Please save us from Hillary and Jeb!

Jon leaving his show at this time seems to be a corporate move by the powers who own the station. I ask myself why would he stop his satire now when so much is at stake for us to see and hear the truth?
It might be that Jon is tired of fighting with his bosses to get the message out. It might be that the station executives wanted to make the move because they got cold feet?
Jon Stewart was too honest and too smart and too proud to be stopped by some corporate people who wanted to control his efforts at truth!

So this is what it was like when Walter Cronkite retired. It hurts.
47
Walter ended the war and quit, job accomplished.
Yup. Exactly. Even though their job descriptions would sound very different read one after the other, they performed a similar service to the nation.
He sure did, in a defining way. For his fair treatment of Nancy Pelosi, Stewart deserves the Medal of Freedom. I conveyed that last night as well but it of course was returned to the Potter's ground...as may this comment
Very upsetting news. I cannot even begin to imagine not getting my nightly fix of Jon Stewart's take of daily events. Brilliant and truly irreplaceable.
36
A funny man whose FAKE news show will be missed. Sadly many have come to think his show is a real news show and to me that says more about the sad state of information validation and information consumption in the US population than any other one thing. J. Stewart, I wish you success in your future endeavors.
16
Even Jon bristled at the term "Fake." In an interview with Rachel Maddow in 2010 he had trouble neatly fitting his show (or as he said--"our" show) into any neat category...rather as he said a "comedic" look at today's top issues.
There was absolutely nothing fake behind his earnestness for truth instead of cover up...showing it all for what it really was as opposed to being smoothed over with spin.

1
"Fake" news that was fact-checked, unlike other outlets like Fox. It is a sad commentary on the state of broadcast journalism, but it is indeed how many of us got our news. Funny was the way he could get the point across, in an age where we expect entertainment all the time.
I chose to watch, because I knew that the information presented was accurate, and if it wasn't, there would be corrections given. And he's funny.

Jon Stewart show isn't about 'fake news', its all about political satire.
Satire (noun) - the use of irony, sarcasm, ridicule, or the like, in exposing, denouncing, or deriding vice, folly, politics etc

Run for president, Jon. Speak truth to power. Please?
29
I'm afraid our Jon didn't have the subtlety to spin anything...as was made crystal clear in David Axelrod's book--"Believer" of how Barack Obama needed to shade his public statements about same sex marriage.
For 22 minutes 4 nights a week, Jon didn't have time for long convoluted messages...his was more of cutting to the core quickly--not how it played out in a 24 hour news cycle or over 19 years as Obama had to play politics on something as essential, as important, as basic equal rights.

Retired the sad cliché "talk truth to power," please.
1
I honestly have no idea how I am going to get through this election without Mr. Stewart.
36
Wow, indeed it is the Apocalypse. We've watched him struggle to find anything funny about many news stories in recent months, quite understandably, because he is above all a good human. So sad; a great loss for viewers. Thank you, Jon.
37
If a guy who made movies about a talking mule can become President, another guy who talks to human beings on TV should certainly be qualified for the job.
16
Thank you, Jon Stewart. You have been a voice of sanity in a media of insanity. You have done an amazing job of developing talent and letting them fly. Colbert succeeded by Wilmore, Oliver with his show weekly. This may be a twofer, with the benefit of whatever Jon Stewart does next, and whatever the next veteran of the Daily Show does with the Daily Show.
18
No more Cobert, now no more John Stewart. The news world is coming to an end. I hope their disciples continue in their foot steps.
19
A great American hero!
19
Jon Stewart 2016!!!!!!!!
"In becoming the nation’s satirist in chief..."
Correction: Newscaster in Chief.
Jon Stewart has done more for political awakening in this country than anyone on television.
We love him, we thank him, and when the time comes we will miss him a great great deal.

I'm in the minority here but I think he crossed the line from funny to preachy and annoying a long time ago. Colbert outshone him.
3
Preachy? No. When direct counters against Rupert Murdoch and his furry buddies were no longer effective, he sometimes brought out the big guns of illumination.
But preach? Never...just more sadness, anger, and frustration lately at the same lies repeated over and over and over.

2
I'm not completely surprised by this move. In his interview with Angelina Jolie, Stewart hinted that there might be something more for him elsewhere, and other guests have hinted that his time might be up. I hate to see him go, but after years of great shows, and his fellow comedians leaving to better venues, he too rightly deserves to create another path after blazing a trail of late night satire for the ages.
12
Well I'm hoping it's Stewart for President in 2016. I could see myself voting for him. . . .
13
Simply put, A national treasure.
44
As I write from the City of San Jose, California, as a progressive, I think that John Stewart was the best interviewer of individuals from around the world but in particular the Arab, Persian, and what is essentially the middle east and East Asia - India. Personally, even though I read the NYTIMES, the Economist, and the BBC online, I would never have become acquainted with the deep humanity and humility of many progressives in that war afflicted area of the world. Many of his interview "lines" stick in my mind. One involved the interview of a Indian writer/analyst/predictor. Mr. Stewart stated that it is going to be the Chinese or the Indians that take over the world, and if there could be a choice between the two, he would chose India to do so.
My thinking is that the world is not funny anymore. You cannot jibe the men and women in power for flaunting their power when in fact, we need them - the free world needs them to protect us. These are very difficult times; the comedian has lost his fodder for jokes.

"lost his fodder for jokes?"
Have you seen the most recent clown car of the two dozen Republicans running for president in 2016? Santorum, Huckabee, Rick Perry, perhaps both Michele Bachmann and Sarah Palin, Bush 45, Scott Walker, Ben Carson, Chris Christie, Rand Paul, Bobby Jindal--and his party of stupid? Oh there is plenty to plumb...but maybe THAT is the final straw...AGAIN? And Mitt Romney promises to stay on the sidelines if need be...but that ole prep cheerleader would be ready for action if called!

Thank you Jon for all that you have done. You will be sorely missed, and I fear for what our media will be left with.
15
The "fake news" anchor speaks truth while the "real news" anchor aggrandizes and dissembles. Tells you all you need to know about the state of the news. Vaya con dios, Jon Stewart.

The world will be a whole different place without Stewart. Where will we get sound political judgment? Thank you Stewart for your service. One of America's top 21st century Intellectuals
18
And yet there is a shyness in Stewart that would shrug off any coat of a top 21st century intellectual.

How many laughs has this single man brought to the world?
What a mensch!!!!
Godspeed John.... in whatever you do.

Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz the Conscience of America. Help, help…
6
Jon Stewart for President in 2016. Seriously. Al Franken went from being a satirist to a respected 2nd term US Senator. Jon Stewart would win in a landslide - he's beloved, not just for making us laugh, but for providing insight and knowledge. He's brilliant, insightful on a range of issues - foreign policy, complex economics, the environment, etc, and he's compassionate. I can't think of a more trusted public figure who could lead this country.
24
Jon Stewart, one of a kind, biting humor and yet charitable ... the goto comic relief at 11 pm... 2015 became just a dimmer... Wish Mr. Stewart many creative opportunities in the future!
15
Jon Stewart should replace Brian Williams immediately. Him I trust. All others not so much. Be Bold NBC.
6
You are right, but Jon Stewart would never agree to be a corporate mouthpiece, and they won't give him total control.
4
Jon Stewart would never be in a role in which he could not make his point with humor. Stewart shamed Congress into passing a Bill to help 9/11 First Responders. He would not have the same freedom to do that, as just another 6:30PM News Anchor.
1
Be bold NBC? That may be the funniest line in these comments.
It took NBC a WEEK to suspend #LyinBrian...and he was suspending himself as managing editor before someone stepped in...but only for 6 months...kinda like Ray Rice's 2 game suspension.
As Stewart said on last night's show--maybe his kids and wife need to see him for supper each night...and maybe a season ticket to his Mets?

Who is left for us to trust?
7
We can honor John Stewart's efforts over the years by sincerely committing to not watching the inanity and spin of network news. Find a real news channel, watch the one hour news report every day, then shut off the TV and enjoy the real world. It needs us and our full attention and no one revealed this better than John Stewart.
10
But which hour? Perhaps the women--Gwen Ifill or Rachel Maddow?
1
Jon Stewart is the heir to a long list of comic masters. His sense of timing is perfect and his silences and dead pan facial expressions have always reminded me of Jack Benny or Johnny Carson. With his talent I look forward to seeing him explore a whole new world for himself. Mazle tof.
6
I think you mean "Molotov"--right Scott Walker?
1
Samantha Bee please step up.

America is loosing a major source of truth. I wish him well but he is irreplaceable. No one has deflated liars and gasbags like thing king of comedy with truth barbs I have no doubt that he will be doing great thing as a director and writer. He is to today's America like Will Rogers and Mark Twain was in earlier times. The Daily Show was a true comedy college training additional conics who owe their careers to his help.
8
I'm too sad to be happy for him now. Losing The Colbert Report and The Daily Show makes me wonder how I can make it through a polictical season without their brillant insight and delightful humor, or even a day.
11
Hypocrites roasted under Jon Stewart's gaze seem to shrink in size right before our eyes. A sight to behold.
Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert have kept me sane. A thousand times..Thanks.

The news business is losing its no. 1 journalist. I hope he returns as I can't believe he will let his many talents go to waste.

Stewart is a lib. I am not. Stewart is a very intelligent and truthful man. I will miss him.
66
That's an excellent comment. It shows how much Jon Stewart is respected.
Stewart is a "lib?" Oh he would have loved that one...if "lib" means shining a light on all lies and misdirections--including my commander-in-chief--then he was a "lib." If lib means empathy and a call to goodness...
Did you see his monologue and show post 9/11? His warmth, his unrelenting love of NYC, his frustration, and anger made this monologue one of his best.

Or his dismantling of Crossfire?

Lib? Buckley couldn't have said it with more bite and sarcasm.

He's not a carbon copy lib. He goes off the reservation.
Oh no! Now I'm going to have to watch FOX 'News' myself!

Draft Jon Stewart for President!
4
Stewart is stuff that legends are made of. Brilliant satire interlaced with incredible common sense. Hopefully, we will soon be enjoying a new chapter in Jon's life.
5
I will be saddened to see him leave. First Stephen Colbert, now Jon Stewart, Comedy Central will have large shoes to fill.
5
Stewart and Colbert have been the most effective and honest commentators on American politics. That both are leaving "The Daily Show" is a disaster for all of us. Who is behind this tragedy? Presumably, those who control our media.
2
I'm going to miss him. His humor has entertained me, his wit has stimulated me intellectually, and in a world where journalists don't ask hard enough questions or confront the hypocritical and people in general skirt around the truth, his courage has inspired me.
Thanks, Jon Stewart, for everything. I look forward to seeing whatever else you get involved in that you choose to share with the world. Best of luck.

On Tuesday, February 10, 2015, America lost its top news anchor--Jon Stewart. Ironically, America also lost its top comedic anchor, Brian Williams, the same day.
I know which announcement saddens me more.
Who will tell us the truth now?
I know which announcement saddens me more.

24
if there is a god, he or she is going to be more than a little upset that, having gone to so much trouble to provide Jon with all this great raw material for Indecision 2016, he is not sticking around to turn it into a finished product for our consumption. Plus, without him as a counterweight, one of these jokers might actually win, which was not part of the plan at all.
2
With so little liberal talk left these days either in radio or TV land, I'm going to miss him terribly. He spoke and hurt for me. I could feel his pain and it helped ease mine. He has institutional memory. Without him, we have little left to engage us intellectually. I guess there's always CSpan but even CSpan is too much R for me these days. This country needs Jon Stewart.
12
Aasif Mandvi would be a spectacular replacement. His last piece on Alabama and Jesus the "banned" foreigner was masterful irony.
13
Perhaps through his own unique but astute satirical prism, Mr. Stewart looks ahead to the 2016 presidential follies and questions, "How can you top - or bottom - that?"
In some respects, I think most of us dedicated NYT readers might agree that the Republican Party especially has long gone off the rails and seems more bent than ever in their race to the bottom, through the bottom, below the bottom and beyond. When they set themselves up for satire while impervious to the fact that they are being satirized - i.e. made fools of - then where is the challenge in making the patently ridiculous look more ridiculous than it is?
My pipe dream for Mr. Stewart would be that he launches an Independent candidature in 2016, jabbing, stinging and provoking at every misstep, cutting through the thick gobs of GOP/Dem hyperbole in his own inimitable fashion; a low-level campaign that would leverage many facets of modern technology (and calling in a few production IOU's he's sure to have accumulated during his brilliant career) to inject shots of truth serum into the arms of the lamentable mainstream TV news outlets. Unencumbered by political affiliation or the compromises of dealing with deep-pockets Citizens Now finks, he could dispense with the usual platforms and promises and rather use his campaign better to skewer what is indeed shaping up to be a profoundly "skewerable" mess of a low-brow melodrama.
Best wishes for very deservedly indulging whatever it is that moves you Jon.

Nooooooooooo!!!!!
Seriously, I genuinely burst into tears hearing this. We need this sort of cutting edge news (more real than Fox and other folks) While I love Larry Wilmore for sure, we need another half hour of coverage that hits the spots Stewart and Colbert did.
This nation is so ignorant so often, we need intelligent funny coverage. Through laughter get truth.

Bye John, you will be missed.
You're interviewing skills are a national treasure, Sure hope you don't let that go to waste.
Best of luck, and looking forward to the next gig.

I especially remember his interview of Alan Greenspan, a man with a Ph.D. in Economics. And Stewart, the "comedian" made Greenspan look stupid when Greenspan said he was shocked at the way that bankers did not exhibit more responsibility in how they ran their banks. "And you are just learning this now", Stewart asked.
He also had a great Interview of ex-Treasury Secretary Tim Geitner, on his book "Stress Test" and Stewart made a good case the the Great Bailout of 2008 should have been from the "Bottom Up" and not from the "Top Down".

else is the freedom everyone should have at

John Stewart is the best of America, healthy cynicism and a sense of humor. Too bad there are so few of his ilk. That sly look before he is about to throw a zinger is priceless. Only a real mensch can see the world as he does.
21
Lock up all the firearms and sharp objects and poisonous substances. Jon Stewart is pretty much all that has kept my sanity afloat through the Tea Party years. I can't imagine daily life without him.
15
A smart person. Best to leave while you are on the increasing positive slope of the curve. Hard to determine roll-over to the decreasing slope.
2
Jon!!! What are we going to do without you during the 2016 election!!!
Please do not abandon us. We need you.

Jon Stewart is leaving "The Daily Show" , think about it, a very long moment of Zen. This past decade and a half saw horrible acts of terrorism, irresponsible financiers and politicians, wars fought on credit cards using high paid contract workers and only the soldiers made sacrifice, back home corporate officers received millions of dollars in bonuses while nearly bankrupting the country. Jon Stewart brought light to this dark picture, laughter to this grim and cynical portrait. and honestly and humbly told us who we are. Bye, Jon. Laughter, peace, and wisdom be with you.

Bummer. He is a beacon of sanity and laughter in a media world of corruption and pathological liars.
17
A very sad day.
10
At least we still have Larry Wilmore. Now if we can just get John Oliver back from HBO, life will be good again!!! Otherwise, the only decent TV is PBS.
10
I love John Oliver's HBO show, but I agree. I thought he was the only person who could fill Jon Stewart's shoes on the Daily Show.
He stopped being dependably funny not too long after President Obama was inaugurated. It's what happens to smart alecks when your side is totally running things and all there really is to do is play defense for them.
The show had some real moments of brilliance and hilarity - one of a kind. But he probably should have retired two or three years ago.

2
With respect, I would have to disagree with you. I liked the way that Stewart recently ridiculed North Carolina's new Republican Senator, Thom Tillis. Senator Tillis thinks that government should not force Starbucks employees and others who prepare and serve food to have to wash theirs hands after using the rest room.
Clearly, we have different ideas about what is funny.

Looks like NBC needs an anchor.....
9
and Comedy Central needs a comedian...

The world needs voices like Jon Stewart's which will help us turn greed, ignorance, and anger into generosity, wisdom, and contenment.
Jon Stewart as Brian Williams's replacement?

It is said that Jon Stewart is the most trusted "News" person today. Never mind he's a comedian and presents satire news. On the other hand, I thought Stephen Colbert was the most trusted fake conservative newsman ;-)
8
Television is a dying medium, and good riddance! An audience of two million people is pitiful. Outside of the NY-DC-LA axis hardly anybody watched him. Comparison to Cronkite is ridiculous. At his peak he had an audience of 30-40 million people out of a much smaller population
2
For all or most of Cronkite's time on TV, there were only 3 networks. There was no Internet, no Cell phones and much less in the way of media outlets.
So to compare Stewart's numbers with Cronkite's is to compare Apples with Mangoes, to a large extent.
So to compare Stewart's numbers with Cronkite's is to compare Apples with Mangoes, to a large extent.
1
Back when Cronkite was on there was very little choice as to entertainment mediums. We all st huddled around the tv every night so it was pretty simple for Cronkite to be the obvious choice. Today, with the internet, 2 million viewers nightly is quite respectable.
1
Jon Stewart is one of the last independent and critical voices of journalism left in America. Through the consolidation of media we’ve polarized our coverage but reduced its depth. We argue everything and analyze nothing. We have failed at asking hard and critical questions of the corporate and political establishment, left and right, and have paid a literal price for this failure. Stewart has reminded us through comedy that our failure to question is no laughing matter.
14
Who will enlighten us, shine a light for us? Jon has been wonderful and made the way for others - Stephen Colbert, John Oliver.
John Oliver was fantastic when he filled in for the summer. I vote for him to replace Jon although I love his HBO show.

4
I've never left a comment here tho I read the paper daily. THAT's how sad I am about Stewart leaving. His mix of bitingly funny, brilliantly incisive and compassionately rendered humor got me through more than a few nights the last 16 years. I'd say I've watched that show 3-4 times a week FOR 16 YEARS. He's who I want to be when I grow up and I'm older than he is.
17
Jon Stewart is a very talented person, but the partisans praising him on this thread would be demonizing him if he were not a reliable partisan himself. The hero worship seen on this thread is clearly more about love of his partisanship than true admiration for his talents.
Can anyone here honestly say that they would love Stewart and Colbert if they were partisan conservatives instead of partisan liberals?
Can anyone here honestly say that they would love Stewart and Colbert if they were partisan conservatives instead of partisan liberals?
4
Partisan conservatives can't do humour. Unless it's the unintentional stuff JS has skewered for years.
8
we love him cause he speaks truth to power and to stupid. if you cant figure that out then, what does it say about your political stripe that it can't abide by someone who tell the truth?
1
Chris, how often did "Partisan Conservatives" on Fox News and elsewhere ever criticize President George W. Bush?
Stewart has never been shy about coming down hard on President Obama for the conditions at the Veterans Administration and other issues. I have never been in a VA Hospital, but I believe that Jon Stewart's reporting had a positive effect on the Va, in a way that the "serious" News Shows did not have.
Stewart was critical of Democratic New York Governor, Mario Cuomo, on the Moreland Commission Scandal. So much so, that I switched my vote in Nov 2014 away from Cuomo and voted for his Republican challenger, Rob Astorino. That was the first time I voted based on what a "Comedian" told me on TV.
Sorry, but Stewart has not been very "reliable" as a "Partisan", if you had watched his show on a regular basis.
Rather, Jon Stewart HAS been "reliable" in his relentless search for Truth, regardless as to where the chips will land. THAT is why he will be missed.

Sure am going to miss him. After our kids got us into The Daily Show you couldn't help see how lame the "real" TV new is, especially after the Koch brothers took over PBS, opps, I mean started to underwrite so many PBS programs.
But I do wish him well and am sure that he will continue to do interesting things. Hopefully he will bring us along for the ride.

10
John Stewart for President 2016!
6
With Jon and Stephen walking away from their desks, could it be the perfect time for another rally to restore sanity and/or fear?
3
John is the last pillar supporting the small amount of sanity left in this nation. It may be time to pack up the kids and immigrate....
5
Jon - you are simply the best. Enough said.
4
The next election will not be the same without the Daily Show coverage...
3
He is going to be missed. In reality, he presented more "news" than the regular networks, especially the 24hr networks, e.g., CNN, MSNBC, and whatever Fox "News" might be.
Now the real question is who is going to replace him? Who is on the horizon that can do political/media satire? I don't see any obvious comedians out there. John Oliver, the likeliest candidate is already spoken for on his own show on HBO. The pool is rather shallow.

Plenty of talented women out there......
Jon Stewart leaves the Daily Show. Brian Williams is suspended for six months. Coincidence? :-) :-)
4
Head for the basement or the closest air-raid shelter! Certainly the end of the world as we know it!
4
I may be in the minority of Jon Stewart admirers, as I am 86 soon to be 87 next month. I gave up cable TV five years ago, and built an aquarium. I do not miss the custsie airheads of so-called 'news'. Jon Stewart has given me hope that there are some out there that 'get it'. Politics has become a joke, riddled with lies and stretching of the truth, and reeling in the gullible with that garbage. We deserve better than that! He was a very intelligent, caring host who gave us the 'truth' in subtle ways, yet skillfully interjected humor so that we could 'lighten up' with the political circus and he exposed it for what it truly has become. He launched other comedians, with his lack of supreme ego, and recognizing potential talent. There is a depth to this man where many are oblivious and cannot appreciate. Perhaps it is my age, and ability to take from history the long view. I wish him well, and sincerely hope he finds a venue that matches his intelligence and talent. I will truly miss him as I so sincerely need the humor and truth he brought into my life.
44
I miss Stephen Colbert's humor and humanity, but, although Jon Stewart is responsible for launching Mr. Colbert's Comedy Central show, I will not miss his sarcasm. Mocking people and displaying contempt for them is not wisdom, and is the worst sort of argument, since refuting points made thereby, whether or not they make sense, is almost impossible. If Mr. Stewart moves on to a more serious program, this viewer hopes that the harsher elements of his Daily Show persona will be left behind.
1
I think you're confusing Stewart with Sean Hannity
11
Great idea! Let's have a comedian move on to a more serious program! Unclear on the concept.
2
Not my idea. Stewart was reportedly considered for host of Meet the Press. But thanks for making my point about sarcasm.
To Adam: Ironically, I know who Hannity is only through Comedy Central jokes....

Brian Williams I could care less about, but Jon Stewart?
Where will I get my fix of real news now?
Where will I get my fix of real news now?
13
Please bring back Craigers. Killborn was the best.
1
And Jon Stewart and Brian Williams are above the fold and front page news because...?
Oh, they're TV personalities, of course.
Oh, they're TV personalities, of course.
1
Thanks to Jon Stewart, I'll never forget the time Dick Cheney shot that old guy in the face. ("Thank you, Jesus.")
10
Who will tell the truth now on tv? Who will say the things that must be said so that we don't drown in misinformation, jingoistic propaganda and flat out lies?
Who will make us laugh till we cry while making us see what's real and reasonable in our politics and society, if not Jon?
Perhaps Jon has already introduced him to us on the show - that talented man from South Africa perhaps?

8
You ask who will tell the truth on TV now? John Oliver, that's who- on his Last Week Tonight show on HBO. We'll sorely miss John Stewart but thankfully he's launched John Oliver's brilliant career.
2
i am saddened by the news and hope his wit and wisdom will appear again in some other form of format to nurture and sustain the painfully humorist analysis of our existence. Jon helped many to blossom under his watch and cannot find enough talents to fill the void left by many stalwarts . The daily show made my daily grind a bit better and brighten and extended my lifespan through unadulterated pure humor. I will miss it dearly. Thanks Jon for the many years of pure sarcasm.
10
I will miss Jon Stewart a whole lot more than I will miss Brian Williams. Since I discovered Stewart (thanks to my son), I have found him to often be much more accurate about events than any of the news(infotainment) reporters, except for Rachel Maddow and some of the other evening reporters/commentators. (I have no use for Al Sharpton and don't much like the Ed Show because of its stridency.)
5
Maybe, Jon Stewart would like to replace Brian Williams--there might be an opening at NBC.
4
To borrow from Picasso, the Daily Show was certainly the lie that showed the truth.
14
The next election will not be the same without the Daily Show coverage...
3
The Edward R. Murrow of satire.
14
How serendipitous, Brian Williams steps on the banana peal and John Stewart becomes available. Now if only someone would become available to replace Matt Lauer NBC News would be in the catbird seat.
6
How about Jimmy Fallon for the Today Show, Jon Stewart for the Nightly News (yes, he has the gravitas and by gum, he has the connections!), and Chris Hardwick for the new version of the Daily Show? That means we can watch a new comedy star at 11PM on Comedy Central, and then turn over to CBS for Mr. Stephen Colbert at 11:30PM? What a wonderful world that would be!
1
Who will make fun of Fox News? With Colbert bailing for the Letterman show It now looks like Fox will have the field all to themselves with no counterweight.
2
I have it on good authority that Jon Stewart is leaving the Daily Show to co-host, with Sarah Palin, a new show on Fox.
2
While I pity the fool that will try to fill his shoes, and bid adieu to probably the most inspirational intertwining of political wit, social satire, and serious debate that has literally given me a reason to live the past 14 years.
While I will seriously mourn the loss of our beloved host in his current role, I relish the possibilities of his ascension to new heights of social and political impact. It's self-evident there are probably three directions his career could wander form here:
1) Start his own media conglomerate - ala Merv Griffin
His pet peeve are the current media conglomerates management and presentation of the news and lack of serious discussion/debate of current political and social issues. He could easily gain the funding and resources to start his own cable channel(s), web-based services, and multimedia production company focused on news, political and social issues, and serious debate and discussion, in synergy with his own brand of comedy media production.
2) Runs for political office. Ala Senator Al Franken. Hummm... The timing couldn't be more perfect. Actually, this is #3 on my list, but I bring it up because of the timing. There will be a New York Senate race in 2016, but he'll have to defeat Chuck Schumer in the Primary. Very win-able in NY.
3) Becomes a political commentator/host/producer with a witty and probing bent for a major media corporation, probably NBC. Facilitates expression/access but would subvert his creative freedom.

Thank you for everything, Jon. You done good.

I appreciate the fact that Jon Stewart had a variety of guests on his show from a variety of fields.
I also appreciate the fact he actually READs the book of the authors he interviews.
When something newsworthy (or not) happens during the day, I immediately think how interesting and enjoyable it will be to see what Jon Stewart and his crew has to say about it.

Okay then. He was too funny, and I agreed with him too often, so it's off to the stud pasture with him. Still, couldn't he have waited until after the 2016 election?
3
I feel an incredible loss to read about Jon's departure.
The day isn't complete without his piercing commentary and fantastic wit.

Dear Jon,
Tomorrow I do my first standup performance and just today I was saying to an acting coach how you are my model. You barely need words. Just facial expression and body language. My heart is broken.

Did he have to do it the same year as Colbert?

Justice Anton Scallia said found the Daily Show "silly"...yep
Thank You Jon..for calling silly, silly and calling stupid stupid
This is a tough act to follow.

As stewart himself would say, did not see that coming. actually i did. the daily show was not interesting to me after the '012 presidential campaign. he and his writers lucked out with republican primary candidates that offered much fodder for political satire. but when that was over all he could make fun of was the MSM including Fox News. Hillary is going to run unopposed and the Republicans look like they have their act together so he is smart to bail now with his mojo intact.
We're going to miss you, Mr. Stewart.

So very sorry to see such a talented, brilliant man leave a limelight he so deserved. Especially sad in the light of the self-destructive blow-up of Brian Williams. Thank you, Mr. Stewart, for sharing your honest, hilarious vision of the world with us!

Interesting to read about Jon Stewart leaving on a career high
and at the same time to learn about Brian Williams' suspension from NBC.
So the faux news as many foresaw, has now become the news of the day
and the 'nightly news' is featured in a few minutes sandwiched between the segments of the pharmaceutical industry, weather, celebs, obits, and advertising. Even then, NBC could not get the facts straight.
Jon Stewart leaves us a legacy of taking on the significant issues and still laugh at ourselves . Sometimes now that humor is all we have left.
Thank you Jon Stewart!

I have watched the Daily Show as a devoted fan since I became a high school freshman in 2000. Jon Stewart revolutionized political satire and became the voice of the frustrations of a generation. With that said, I am glad he is moving on to other projects while the show is still successful. Long-time fans have noticed a slow decline in the quality of the show as Stewart has grown older and obviously jaded with the political process. In addition, the structure of the show is nearly identical to what it was 15 years.
Here's to the Daily Show, to which I have given countless hours of my free time!

Jon Stewart should replace Brian Williams.

There's going to be a big gap in television news coverage with the current departure of Brian Williams and the pending departure of Jon Stewart. Both have captured the imagination of the American public. One however mixed in fiction with his coverage and one mixed in humor to capture ratings that will now plummet on both venues .
1
The show lost a fair amount of its bite when Obama was elected. Apparently being able to pronounce "nuclear" correctly buys you the requisite benefit of the doubt. I always thought it supremely ironic given the show's all guns blazing approach to the Republican convention in Tampa in 2012 versus their softer warmer coverage of the Democrat convention in Charlotte, that the Daily Show chose to lampoon Fox and their signature partisan biases.
Contrast with Glenn Greenwald, who doesn't hold his fire just because its a Democrat in the Oval Office attacking our freedoms at home and waging illegal war abroad.
Never forget that Stewart, like the anchors he lampoons, knows that the price of an 8-figure salary is deference to power. The acid test of a satirist is not what invective they shout at a picture of (say) Hillary Clinton, but what they say when she's sitting 6 feet away from them. Stewart was quite willing to verbally destroy the small fry (Jim Cramer) for the editorial sins of his corporate masters, but when confronted with the real powerbrokers (Dick Durban), its "How are you bearing up?" (actual quote).

Stewart did not "hold his fire" when he criticized President Obama for the dreadful conditions at the VA Hospitals.

Running for president in 2016, I hope!
8
Whhhhhaaaatttt!!! He can't leave us!!! Jon Stewart, with his wit and intelligence, mocked our political system, exposed the hypocrisy in our politicians, news media and ourselves, educated the younger generation who had long abandoned the traditional news outlets, asked the hard questions that the news media didn't and brought humor and mocked the dysfunction of our political system and media. Thank you Jon. It has been a good ride. We will miss you.
9
Jon Stewart assembled a brilliant team of faux reporters and video scourers to do better journalism than most broadcast journalists. Jon is too modest to take himself seriously, but I bet journalism schools will be talking about him for many years to come.
12
Mr. Stewart, you helped keep us sane during so many embarrassing political nightmares in our country. Thank you
10
I'm so sad to see that he's leaving. It was bad enough when Stephen Colbert left. Jon was all we had left. They are both bright, intelligent, and funny. The Daily Show is one of the very few TV shows my husband and I don't want to miss. We are senior citizens and are very aware of the service they have both done to educate young people. I think Jon just got tired and discouraged. You could see it in his face.
20
This reads like on obituary. Jon Stewart lives.
12
Others here have said it better, but, thanks Jon Stewart. Thanks for the laughs. Thanks for unleashing Stephen Colbert on the world. Mostly thanks for giving millions of us 30 minutes of nightly catharsis in a nation gone nuts.
27
This is so very, very sad. The balance and usefulness of commercial TV news just sustained a death blow. I don't always agree with Mr. Stewart. And sometimes I think he is wrong. But he always has a well reasoned and well presented presentation that's based on the assumption that his viewers are intelligent and caring - that they are paying attention. Is there any other commercial daily network news show that can come close to making that claim? I think not. He will be missed.
8
Hey! We hear there's an opening at NBC. Lord knows, they've tried every other way to get viewers back....why not telling the truth a Jon Stewart's tongue firmly implanted in his cheek?
He really is one of the most reliable sources on television.

How can he do this to us? It's like when Johnny Carson walked out of millions of bedrooms across the nation when he retired! We'll have to learn how to say good night again.
6
First Colbert, now Jon. Ugh, how am I going to deal with the antics of conservative politicians now?!
8
I will always remember his round table discussion with the 9/11 first responders who couldn't get medical payments and disability from their work at ground zero. When he spoke with the fireman who was dying of throat cancer I was overwhelmed.
Stewart certainly helped get that bill passed! Yes!

I saw him do standup at the Borgata a couple of years back...OUTSTANDING. Hope to see more....

In 2016, without Obama, Colbert or Stewart, we're not going to have any leaders left.

There's an opening to report the news at NBC.
1
Obviously a very talented performer and commentator. That said, his recent shows include a lot of him literally just yelling "FU" at people who dare not share his political views. Hardcore partisans will clap at any such nastiness, and his audience was no exception. I can't help but believe that his less angry and more tolerant viewers were disappointing to see him sink to such a low form of rhetoric. Like most legends, he hung on a few years too long., but he will be remembered for an impressive body of work, not the low point on which he left.
It is time for a recall ! We were so lucky to have the Daily Show / Colbert Report in our daily edification for so many years. THANK YOU for the laughs, insights, and remarkable takes on interesting topics. Oh how you will be missed!
3
I am sad to see him go. Not only will he be missed but more importantly his work will be missed. With over 2 million viewers he proved a worthy counterpoint to the the lunacy and lie-based, reportage at Fox News. Thankfully his spin offs will still be ridiculing the hypocrisy of the radical right and with any luck one of his finely cultivated crew will take the helm of The Daily Show in his absence. God bless you Jon. And I sincerely thank you for your service to this country.
13
Mr.Stewart turned partisan news into bi-partisan laughter, and always left us wanting more. Some big empty clown shoes to fill at @TDS. :^(
3
Jon will be sorely missed, but in this 'cultural' (You should pardon the expression) era of Bods, Bucks and Brainlessness, he's doing the smartest thing. It's called getting out while the getting is good and there's (hopefully) enough moolah salted away to avoid ever having to beg for a job. Believe me, in the Biz the last thing you want is to find that you've stuck around long enough to start getting the sniping about grey hair, a few facial lines, or that greatest of all sins these days - a slight loss of tightness in the midsection - resulting in ceaseless fashion coaching and reminders to hit the gym. Enjoy doing whatever you'd like, Jon. You've earned it!

One night in 1999, I was flipping channels looking for something -- anything -- other than the blah blah blah on the toob. Suddenly the screen was filled with an image that looked like a news show but the words being earnestly delivered by the man behind the desk were refreshingly different. My impatient thumb hovered over the remote control while I paused for a moment trying to make sense of what I was witnessing. My thumb relaxed. My eyes and ears became (and have remained) transfixed on this so-called comic who so wisely and eloquently speaks truth to power and gives me comfort that I am not the only one who feels the pain of injustice, hypocrisy or simple lack of human decency that is too often overlooked by the media. Jon Stewart makes me laugh and sometimes cry at my foibles and those of our "trusted" leaders. He gives me the feeling that I have someone on my side -- a voice, a champion. Thanks for carrying that load for so long. I'll savor every minute 'til the last moment of Zen.
8
Thank you, Jon - for helping sustain our democracy. It's been a joy and an education ! Sincerely.
5
Thanks, Jon, for helping to keep me sane the past 15 years with your humor, intelligence, and compassion.
I look forward to your next chapter.
I look forward to your next chapter.
6
He made be laugh, made me cry, made me notice, made me angry (not at him), made me think, made me wonder. That magic will be hard to conjure up again.
8
I was lucky enough to stumble on The Daily Show shortly before Indecision 2000. Became an instant fan, and was able to attend several tapings of the show, back when they'd actually mail you paper tickets (still proudly displayed on my fridge). So many of the comments here echo my feelings; at the same time, there are no words to describe my sense of loss of this one-of-a-kind American institution: The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.
Jon, you done good.
Jon, you done good.
5
Four incredibly large shoes just went to market. As a pessimist, I hope the next wave can fill them halfway.
May I suggest a potential replacement?: Brian Williams. He was always one of The Daily Show's best guests: one of the few who could go toe-to-toe with Jon in intelligence, humor and quickness of wit. I hear he might be available, too.
3
Will someone please tell Brian Williams that there will soon be an opening at the Daily Show....
2
As a daily, daily show watcher, I am sad that Jon is closing shop. Hopefully Comedy Central will find someone who can fill those fantastic shoes. Loved the humor and the jokes. Good Luck my friend!
1
Mere coincidence or is Stewart going to step in for Brian Williams? Hmmm....
3
Who is going to be in charge of the news coverage of the primaries and the presidential campaign in 2016? Suddenly it is up for grabs.
4
In the category of "Quibbling with the photo captions"--
"His reports were the main source of news for some of his viewers disenchanted with American politics."
Um...no... they were the main source of news for viewers who were disenchanted with a corporate-controlled media and a press/political press so embedded with--and beholden to the powers that be that whatever drivel and pablum those powers were handing out was never--no matter how bald-faced--challenged.
The true value of Mr. Stewart was that he was willing to call a spade a spade--and his recognition that having his audience--and an honest relationship with that audience--meant he did not have to toady to "powerful" people and the likes of Mike Huckabee and Bill O'Reilly--offending the rich and powerful to the point they would no longer appear on his show was their loss--not his.

This is very sad. John got me through the Bush era. I especially enjoyed his amazing grace in interviewing the stupid and ill intentioned.
16
I have the impression that the media, trying to take giant leaps of imagination are thinking l: You know, Brian is stepping down, could Jon do that? Take over the Nightly News?
What I say to you is : Oh, yea of such small expectations. My Comedy Men could form alliances so much bigger... it'll blow your mind. You watch and be patient. Nothing is too big for these guy's. From my lips to God ear, watch because nothing surprises me about these times anymore. Maybe he'll run for president? Who know's?

Wow... This is shocking...
Jon you are one of the most smartest, intelligent people, who sees and projects reality like no one else... You are always the topic of conversation in dinner... I don't mean for this to sound like a eulogy, and it seems as though the comments here are in this manner, but it is hard not to feel a voide... You are quoted and cited so often... (Sigh)....:(
How do we continue from here?

Quit your crying you guys! We have Fox News 24/7! How much fake news can you handle?
11
With Stewart's departure, we are going to lose much more than a comedian and political satirist. Mr. Stewart exposes and shreds the mediocrity, idiocy and ignorance in this world better than anyone else.
19
The irony of a comedian turning out to be perhaps America's best broadcast journalist - a real newsman, unlike the talking heads on NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, MSNBC, and, especially, FOX - has been much commented upon. Regrettably, those networks have done nothing to respond to Mr. Stewart's challenge. In fact, judging by the Williams fiasco and the astounding loss of quality at CNN, NBC's Meet the Press, and even 60 Minutes, the networks are doubling down on "infotainment" and moving further away from the news. FOX is, of course, a lost cause, being merely a propaganda outlet for the Republican party, but it's shocking to see that the other networks have all too often failed to do much better, focusing more and more on the horse race of politics and the personalities of candidates, cute cat and dog videos, celebrities, and crime reports.
Federal regulations are a powerful tool to improve television, including the newscasts, and it is a tragedy that this nation has endured three decades of increasing mediocrity in broadcast journalism, less willingness by journalists of any kind to confront power and those who wield it, and more public confusion. Our society is hurting because of it.
Jon Stewart is, to many of us, a hero for doing so much in a 16-year career to inform this country. He did with grace, smarts, and humor. Pity there's no one in sight to replace his gigantic contributions to 21st century journalism and enduring American freedom, such as it is.

Given the chance, Chris Hardwick could probably do it.
Best best comment here.
Infotainment is here to stay because the majority of people tune to it, sadly.
Infotainment is here to stay because the majority of people tune to it, sadly.
CastleMan - regrettably, you could add PBS and NPR to your list. Just because their talking heads talk beltway Establishment nonsense at more length and in greater depth than the rest, that doesn't make it nonsense any less.
He's a terrific comic. However, he now thinks he actually knows something. And when the court jester gets delusions of grandeur it's only a matter of time before he starts talking about his tiger blood.
For many years, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert have been the most important news personalities in America, providing a counterweight to big, right-leaning media that networks or personalities either couldn't or wouldn't provide. And, they've been the cutting edge of creative and responsible journalism for the masses.
These people are too important to "move on" -- stay, PLEASE.

I'll miss his wicked insights as much as anybody.
It's a lot of pressure to carry an entire show 4 days a week. On the bright side, he said he's leaving "The Daily Show", not retiring. It wouldn't surprise me to hear that he's moved up to a network. Maybe "60 Minutes" has found a new Andy Rooney (or some such)?

I will miss Stewart, but I commend him for having the good judgment to leave while he is still riding high. All too often, people in such positions leave long after their sell-by date has passed!
Jon Stewart has provided an invaluable counterbalance to the biased, distorted "journalism" of the right wing media propaganda machine, particularly Faux News. Scary to think that no one might be there to replace him.
7
It's a huge loss, but he's smart to leave now before the media swallows him whole. He has the right to do other things. The truth is, America doesn't deserve his talents.
1
First Stephen Colbert and now Jon Stewart. Leaving! I spent some time in college studying Alexander Pope and Jonathan Swift, and I have to expect these two satirists will be studied in classrooms in the near future if they aren't already.
7
Why was this written like it was an obituary?
1
It IS like he passed for many of us.
2
Oh, if only he would at least stay on through the 2016 elections -- we're really going to need him then. Who else will deliver such trenchant comedy amid the inanities of other news outlets? Who else will deliver such salutary skewering of the candidates' smugly delivered nonsense? Mr. Stewart, can you really leave just as The Clown Car is refilling it's gas tank for another run?
10
Stewart '16!
6
Jon...how could you leave us??
2
This FDNY vet just wants to say "Thank you, Mr. Stewart" for bringing the nation to its senses on the Zadroga bill.
21
Finally! Jon Stewart can focus on a Half Baked sequel.
1
"Fully Baked"?
1
Oh, Boy! Maybe he could replace Brian Williams. He has MORE credibility.......

During the rise of our internet culture and the decline of our traditional sources of reliable news and information, The Daily Show, under Mr. Stewart's leadership, became a safe haven for those of us struggling with the loss of professional objectivity. Even today, Stewart stands our among a landscape where there are very few news outlets who were willing to call out the hypocrisy and corruption that has sadly become commonplace in our political system.
Mr. Stewart's harsh treatment of the media during and after the Iraq war made him cast him as as desperately needed paragon of the truth and gave him the credibility to reinvigorate satire as a much needed force within politics. Most importantly, He helped heal this city after the attacks of 9/11, teaching us that it was okay to go on, that it was okay to start to laugh, and that it was okay to believe in something again.
When the historians of the future write the political history of the 21st century, satire and its foremost practitioner Stewart will be featured as a cornerstone to understanding our political discourse. He will be truly missed and I can not help but feel that he leaves us with some unfinished work. In my opinion, he has done his part; now it is up to us.

Jon Stewart was - as the director/producer/head-pooh-bah to the Daily Show - what Alan Alda was - as the director/producer/head-pooh-bah - to M*A*S*H. He was the guy who ruined an otherwise funny show and turned it into a personal, political tirade. The Daily Show - a format that had been done ad nauseam since Laugh-In, SNL, Not Necessarily the News, and dozens of others - was a funny critique of the news media when the show started. Stewart followed that model until he started to believe his own hype and turned it into a drab, on-sided, un-funny political satire of the right. When Kilborn started it - and when stewart took it over for the first few years - it made fun of all the media and the way they report the news. When Stewart took it over it turned into a showcase for Jon Stewart's ego, political opinions and political agenda.
The show stopped being really funny years ago. And that may have more to the real story than is being released and regurgitated by the press. It's got to be a little dissettling to Comedy Central to see a part-time contributor like Colbert launch his own show, then over take Stewart, at a later hour, and then go on to be lured away by a major network for a major show.
Hopefully it will either end or they'll find a host who is funny.

Thank you for a wonderful show.
You will be missed by all who tuned in.

Most of Jon Stewart's viewers are too young to remember Ronald Reagan. Reagan was not a lawyer, was not an economist, and not a diplomat. However he was able to communicate with the American public in a way they liked. So I say forget Hillary Clinton. Jon Stewart for President in 2016!
2
It is sad that we came to feel that (excepting NPR) the only news worth hearing/watching was Stewart (and Colbert before he also left).
