In Season Filled With Lows, Knicks Outdo Themselves

The Celtics scored the first 12 points and led by as many as 45 as they handed the Knicks an embarrassing loss in a matinee at the Garden.

  1. This team kills all hope. It's amazing that basically the same group of guys won 54 games last season and created talk that they would unseat the Heat. Think about it, if the Knicks had kept David Lee, Zach Randolph, Jamal Crawford, Danilo Gallinari, Wilson Chandler, Jeremy Lin and Nate Robinson, how much better a team they'd be than the mess they have now.

  2. dolan and more than bad basketball for a long time.

  3. Let's not forget Steve Novak, either, who was deadly from downtown last year. I'm not sure what kind of a payday he got, but he appears to be wasting away with Toronto, averaging 4 points a game. He could be making a solid contribution and he'd be getting more playing time than he did last year, given the thinner roster. The Dolan era has been like the Knick's dark ages. How can we eradicate this plague?

  4. What might have been.....

  5. How depressing. Just when we thought that they had found a way out of their morass, they fall quickly back in. This is starting to feel like a redemption-less season.

  6. Can it be that Carmelo's season-end departure is not soon enough? And maybe he should have company on the way out of town. More blues for Dolan, but that's his preference.

  7. Why wait? Trade him now so you at least get something back. Nobody in their right mind thinks he's staying, do they?

  8. As long as Dolan owns the Kniks they will continue to stink up the coutt

  9. might be the best sports report of a single game, ever.

  10. I noticed that virtually none of the Celtics have tattoos. Maybe preening personalities correlate in some way with being un-coachable. It's just today's theory, of course. Still, I haven't seen a professional team play this badly in a long, long while. And certainly not at this pay scale.

  11. Tattoos in the NBA should be banned.
The most grotesque, disheartening development in sports (and society) ever.

Rule of thumb - if Bill Russell didn't do it, don't do it!

    PS- Mohammad Ali, no tattoos.

  12. @ Paul King;
    grotesque is an understatement....it's revolting

  13. LeBron has a few tattoos. And yet, he's still a pretty good player who, I imagine, would make the Knicks (and Celtics for that matter) a better team.

  14. I have been a Celtic fan since before Bill Russell arrived and was still sorry for the way the Knicks played. I was a fan of theirs in the 1970-71 period when I lived in NYC. A collection of players are not a team any more than a pile of bricks is a house. Likely the Knicks have more individual talent than the Celtics but can't or don't express it in games. Boston was smart enough to hire a young coach who wants to TEACH a system that will appeal to the players he has. They are not great but TRY every night.

  15. Talent includes what's between the ears and in the gut. These Knicks are lazy, self-absorbed me-firsters who are told it is OK to play lazy ball and give the ball to the chuckers and stand around and watch them go one-on-one. Giving J.R. Smith a four year deal tells everyone that he and Carmelo, the no-D men with character issues, run the show. If that isn't depressing enough for a player who wants to play team ball, management endorses Woodson's no-brain schoolyard isolation ball. They must think the people who pay for the tickets know very little and could care less about what makes for good quality basketball with a chance to win the playoffs.

  16. According to the article, the Celtics "were thought to be a young, rebuilding team this season." Isn't this exactly what the Celtics, at 10-12 even after this win, are? They lead the division only because the supposedly better teams are old and poorly constructed.

  17. Whose idea was it to wear these horrible orange uniforms in The Garden? i don't believe they have won once in those outfits!

Puh-leeze! Bring back the home whites for home games and stop trying to vary the merchandising stream!

  18. Q: If I,and maybe every working man/woman out there, preformed as horrific as these Knicks been doing for past 3-4 years, will I/you be holding our job today?
To add insult to injury, These Knicks make (not earn) 7 figures income. Year in...year out. Maybe if we stop going to The Garden, they will feel embarrassed and show up & play.
    Maybe!

  19. Last season was the team's best record in a decade and they made it to the second round, losing to an Indiana team that took the eventual champion Heat to 7 games. So I get your complaint prior to last season, but really the disappointment now is what happened to the winning formula when they retained most of their core players and added another great scorer in Barnyarni????

  20. Dolan is the worst sports franchise owner that I know of since i started following sports in 1986. I have been following the Knicks since about 1988. I have been a Knicks season ticket holder since 2010, before that I owned a partial season plan for a season. The clearest indicator of the mismanagement of the Knicks is the trading away of their first round picks in 2014 and 2016 without any protection whatsoever, so they have traded away what could be top lottery picks, including the 2014 draft which might be one of the most talented NBA drafts ever. I will enjoy going to games for the rest of this season, but I will have greater job in cancelling my season tickets in 2014. Bye-bye Knicks.

  21. SD Kensigngton, cannot believe you would even buy season tickets for this
    basketball team.
You could have donated the money to a worthwhile charity instead of
paying these hapless athletes and Dolan

  22. The best thing that could possibly happen to Iman Shumpert, a young player with extraordinary promise, is for him to be traded to a team like Houston, perhaps for Omar Asik. Lazy, slow, out of shape, dumb basketball being their trademark and clueless about team play, the Knicks are a mirror image of their owner, James Dolan. No one has the motivation to consistently move on offense because the ball stops with the chuckers. Management and the coaches apparently never learned a blessed thing about successful NBA basketball from three generation of Celtics (Bill Russell's, Dave Cowens', and Larry Bird's teams), Bill Walton's Trailblazers, the Reed-DeBusschere-Frazier Knicks in their glory years, or any number of successful teams famous for ball movement. And these people threw away the Jeremy Lin team that drove New York crazy. Maybe James Dolan and Mike Woodson would like us to get on the Bitcoin bandwagon, too ! If these people could reason better than a rebellious teenager, they would trade Carmelo Anthony and start over. The present group play like the Tea Party would govern.

  24. "...clueless about team play, the Knicks are a mirror image of their owner, James Dolan."

    Bravo--well-said.

  25. Without Kenyon Martin they have no defense. Same thing goes for Chandler. What a pity and pitiful lot these Professionials are.

  26. When Kenyon Martin is the excuse for losing the situation is laughable.

  27. Agree with all the previous comments and will trump them with this this comment NO DRAFT PICKS for YEARS. All traded away...

  28. I'm surprised Dolan hasn't brought in Isiah Thomas by now, although it's possible he has as this season has Isiah Thomas written all over it.

  29. After the first ten minutes I knew that it would be a blow out, and turned the TV off.

  30. As long as Dolan runs that franchise the Knicks will continue to be awful. As a Celtics fan I hope he never leaves.

  31. The Chicago Cubs have a billy goat, the New York Knicks have Spike Lee.

    What's it been? 40 years?

    Settle in.

The Cubs have gone 105 years without a title.

Ahhhhh ha ha ha ha ha haaaaaaa!

  32. Agree with comment above: well-written.

Best line: "Boston scored the game’s first 12 points, and then things really got out of hand."

Nothing beats artful sarcasm; ok, maybe win (or two) would be
    nice.

  33. Orange uniforms? Did the knicks get the inspiration from Garfield?

  34. And so it goes.

You let the inmates run the asylum and you wonder why things are the way they are.

In this case of course, the warden isn't much of a guy either. Put that all together and what do you get?

    This year's Knicks.

  35. Why even bother to cover the Knicks - just ignore them - no scores - no news stories - like they are not even here - because they are not - Can't believe all of those suckers who shell out big money year after year -

  36. The stench of Isiah Thomas' losing is still on this team - like the smell of cigarettes in an addict's clothes, it can't be removed in a single wash.

  37. Don't know why Melo was so upset about this 40 point debacle that Team Dolan inflicted on itself... Melo got the # of shots he wanted and he didn't expend any effort on D........ sounds like a normal game by Melo to me.....

  38. A bunch of overpaid, underperforming so-called players who don't care because....win or lose....they will be paid guaranteed..

Melo decided today that winning is not as important as 'getting those points"....even if he has to shoot 5 for 15 to do it!

Meanwhile, the rest of the team has given up on playing hard because the mentality of 'every man for himself' has set in so deep that I expect several more blowouts this season.

    Pitiful.

  39. Dolan should consult with Oakland's A's GM Billy Beane.

  40. When players just stand around and watch on offense; when players don't move on defense and give every Celtic shooter an uncontested shot, then Woodson should remove them from the game! No coach should allow his players to make a fool of him! Sit them on the bench and make them think about how they are ruining their own careers!

  41. Dolan is the worst thing that has ever happened to the Knicks. By a long shot. Until he's gone, they'll never win anything.

  42. Even if the Knicks had won all the games wearing them, I would still call the orange uniforms putrid.

Would the Captain of the Knickerbockers, Willis Reed, look good in orange?

  43. The Knicks need to blow up the team and rebuild through the draft. Oh wait we don't have any draft picks...

  44. Being a Celtics fan since before Bill Russell, I love the Knicks. May Dolan's team long play in his image!

  45. the Knicks looked like a bunch of guys that had lost their pride. This game reminded me of a chapter in Bill Russell's book " Go Up for Glory" when Bill described that totally dismantling a team was actually his worst moment in sports. What the Celtics did on that night was totally destroy the pride of its opponent, reducing the event to a carnage of which you were ashamed to be a part of.

Last night was not a night of which the Celtics should be proud. We didn't just win a basketball game we committed a crime by destroying this teams psyche.

We should be booked for a felony at the local police station.

  46. Felony?? No way. Nobel Prize more like it!!

  47. Well...at least stoppped and frisked ......

  48. Jeremy Lin is a lucky guy.

  49. Knicks will be truly lucky if Carmelo did not kick out Jeremy Lin!

  50. Yes, he certainly is. An excellent decision considering that he is now on a championship-caliber team. His skills & experience will increase and he will be better than anybody on the Knicks' team, except Melo.

  51. dolan's playing with daddy's money, it's all just a big goof for him. real basketball fans know the difference between a well-constructed, well-coached team and this group of duds. Don't go, don't watch, maybe that will force Stern to talk tough with Dolan. only a sale of the franchise will turn things around.

  52. Agreed ... in spades ...

  53. Look at the stats. Carmelo is a ball-stopper. With the attention he commands on the court he should average 8 assists per game. Same result in Denver. He could facilitate and elevate his teammates to get Ws, but instead he's a ball hog.

  54. 'That ship be sinkin'.

  55. Agree with everyone and anyone putting the blame on Dolan's incompetence and buffoonery. The challenge is that this is a very, very profitable asset for the Dolan clan. Even when they are rancid, fans pack MSG and TV revenue soars. No incentive for a sale and/or a change of strategy. If he makes money losing the losing and bad teams will continue.

  56. "Cohesive team game" -- Does it sound like two years ago? What is the result of kicking out Linsanity by Melo?

  57. Does the crowd still chant Defense like they invented the concept?

  58. A bit of schadenfreude from Colorado. Many of us were most joyous when Carmelo departed and watched with some delight whenever the Nuggets won and the Knicks lost. Even to those of us who understand the destructiveness of Melo's game, it is rather amazing how low the Knicks have sunk.

  59. If the Point Guard is the Quarterback of a basketball team, Knicks fans know where to look for one component of the problem. We Blazer fans couldn't get Raymond Felton out of town quickly enough, rarely has a player been so loathed for his lackadaisical play and inability to engage in justifiable self-criticism. It's just one aspect of a toxic team chemistry and a coach who has lost the ear of his squad, if he ever had it.

  60. “'Nobody should be happy about watching something like this happen,' Woodson said."

Well guess what…I'm NOT watching anymore. Rooting for the Knicks is literally rooting for Dolan and his idiocy. I have too much pride to do that anymore. Farewell, team of my youth.

  61. Have not watched the Knicks since the Dolans took over the team.

The Dolans only see the Knocks as a Positive _in black_ ledger mark on the yearly sheets.

No need to change a thing.

When the Dolans are dead then the Knocks may have a chance. But most of us will be dead and gone by them.

  62. I quit on them last year, after being a fan since the inaugural season of the BAA in 1946. Hello Melo, goodbye LIn, goodbye me.

Still love the Giants, Rangers, and Yankees, with all their ups and downs. But Dolan. ech!

  63. It's those uniforms.

  64. The Knicks have been my team for over 40 years but now I hardly care to even watch them. It started with the terrible owner, then interfering with the trade talks with Melo undercutting Walsh. Then letting Jeremy Lin go was the last straw. I watch Houston play whenever I can and when they play the Knicks I root for the Rockets and Jeremy.

  65. Apple-fans might chip in and gift the team with:

"Basketball for the Player, the Fan, and the Coach", by Arnold "Red" Auerbach [Sep. 1976]. Therein Red contends that most of the team's practice concentrates on pass, dribble, and shoot.

    Still 22 copies, used and new, @ Amazon, for $38 each. $38 x 22 ~ $836. [Just sayin', Mike.]

For owner [Dolan], there is "MBA: Management by Auerbach: Management Tips from the Leader of One of America's Most Successful Organizations" [MAY 1994] by Red Auerbach & Ken Dooley.

  66. looked like the Knicks were out the night(s) before partying....and were very tired

  67. Before Jeremy Lin, the Knicks played such poor quality basketball that watching them was a horrible waste of time. For whatever reason (take your pick), watching them again has become a horrible waste of time or money (for your sake, hopefully not both !).

  68. I much rather see Jeremy Lin and four bench players than the starting five we have now posing as Knicks players. Linsanity Team basketball was a joy to watch, these Knicks play for themselves and it shows by their lack of heart. They are unwatchable!
