this is a far more interesting interview than the time she rambled drunk and unfunny on a cruise i was on - just saying

What a great article. Thank you.

Wanda has amazing comic timing. A master. I enjoyed this interview very much and appreciate learning more details about the Rosanne situation from her perspective.

Sykes comes across as an unpleasant individual, and one with some clear personal issues that she 'spins' into a weak brand of comedy in place of therapy. The diatribe about her former husband is quite telling. She intentionally married this man,....and goes on to say "make him stop breathing....."?

Marriage is hard, Paul. I love my husband very much but have, on occasion, (to paraphrase a favorite scene from the movie Heartburn) imagined his funeral, what I'd wear to the funeral, whom I might flirt with at the funeral, how quickly I might start dating after the funeral... Ms. Sykes comes across to me as very real and very funny. My favorite bit of hers is when she talked about the random thoughts that keep women awake at night. (What was my 3rd grade teacher’s name? Did I unplug the iron?)

The Marvelous Ms. Sykes!

I respect Wanda Sykes but I can't listen to her for too long. Her voice, like another commenter said, always sounds like she wants to punch someone in the head. Too much for me! But I always remember a sketch she did on The Chris Rock Show where she and another cast member played weather forecasters who first reported the forecast for white people ("sunny with a chance of clouds in the afternoon"), and then translated the same forecast for black people: the exact same words punctuated by shoulder rolls, chair-dance moves, and hand gestures, all with their eyes locked directly on the camera and never breaking once. They pulled it off absolutely perfectly. I think I rented the entire series once from the library to try to find it again, but couldn't! Will have to try again.

I've followed Ms Sykes since her stand-up days, and even then I thought she was one of the realist woman I know: Black, White, Straight, Gay no matter-Wanda could be trusted to say it like it is. And yes, I thought it was this quality (along with her superb timing and sense of what was happening in society at any given moment) that made her comedy so timely and appealing. Glad to see that she is starting to be recognized as not only a great comic ,but like her White counterpart-Tina Fey, as a director. Wanda undoubtedly has the chops, organization and understanding of what can make for great comedy either on the large or small screen. I look forward to seeing much more of Ms Sykes work both in the movies and Television and if she comes to my town someday to do stand-up ( perhaps simply out of nostalgia) I'll be the one rolling in the aisle , begging for mercy. Oh yeah Wanda, if you see Ms Obama any time soon- Tell her we miss her .

I've followed Ms Sykes ever since her stand-up days and have always thought she was one of the realist woman I've ever seen: Straight, Gay, Black, White or otherwise. Her timing, her sense of what is happening in society and her gift of saying whats on her mind in a manner that you don't know exactly if she is having fun with you and testing your limits of tolerance, or like other great comics and comedians, making a statement that is so real you don't know whether to laugh or cry. Glad to see that Wanda is finally being recognized as possessing the organization, the sensibility and the vision to direct and that she seems destined to join other great female comics (like a Tina Fey) in being widely sought after to present her ideas on both the small and large screens, from behind the camera. And oh yeah- Ms Sykes, if you see Mrs. Obama any time soon tell her we miss her.

Wanda is naturally funny. Her voice always sounds like she wants to punch someone in the side of the head. What a pleasure !

I absolutely loved the new special. As an person of Hispanic descent in a mixed marriage, she expresses so well what I can't or dare not to say.

Thank you Wanda Sykes. Just another fan here. Would love to hear some material on the state of higher education in America. There has to be a good, informative laugh there. And ageism needs a good, informative poke. Thank you for your courage.

Little known fact: Esther has a sister, 'Nersha. Stronger than Esther, even. When 'Nersha gets ahold of me, I can't even get up and feed Esther. Watch out for 'Nersha.

I've always like Wanda Sykes. She has such spunk, directness, a shrewd sharpness that is just enough to get her point across without becoming mean or insulting. She is a very funny and smart comedian. I love her voice. Thank you NYT for this wonderful article which showcases Ms. Sykes on many levels.

Thank you. She is very smart and hilarious. SLY.

Ms. Sykes is peerless. I first noticed her work when she was one of the voice actors in the children's movie "Over The Hedge" and everything she said was hilarious. Now that my children are grown up, I'm glad to see her in more adult-oriented content and can't wait for her Netflix special. Her scrutiny of American life is smart and refreshing amidst the numbing wall of male talking heads to boot (I'm trying to recover from Chuck Todd's chat with Bernie Sanders on "Meet The Press" this past weekend - they were shockingly unchecked in their misogyny). Peerless and fearless and we need her humor more than ever.
