[Tutorial] Enable RCS on any carrier/device with Android Messages

[deleted]

Comments
Edit: RCS HACK NOW BEING DISABLED!!!
I edited OP steps a little for the exact order that worked for me
I suggest you turn off WiFi before setup steps but some are reporting turning on wifi is helping them pass the "stuck on verifying" issue
1.) Enroll in Messages Beta and install
Edit: You need to have Messages beta version 5.3.076. That is the latest version that still has the RCS flags option available. You can get it
2.) Download Activity Launcher
3.) Clear the data of 'Carrier Services' and force stop 'Android Messages.' Edit: If you don't have 'Carrier Services' you can download it from the Play Store
4.) Open Activity Launcher
5.) Tap 'Recent Activities,' and in the menu choose 'All Activities.'
6.) Look for 'Messages'
7.) Tap it, then scroll until you find 'Set RCS Flags'
8.) After pressing it select 'ACS Url"' and in the menu select '
9.) Select OTP Pattern, and in the menu click, YourlsMessenger\sverification\scode\sis\sG-(\d {6}). Edit: This appears to not be staying for some. It didn't stick for me either but my RCS still activated
10.) Click Apply Edit: sometimes clicking apply won't take you anywhere. Just go back and check messages
11.) Follow setup in Messages. Will take around three minutes.
Edit: Thanks for the Gold!!!!
Edit: Thanks for the Platinum too!!!!

Upvoted you because this worked on my US unlocked Note 10+ on t-mobile. (chat features notes its connected on the status area)
Unfortunately I don't know anyone else who has rcs chat, so I can't test it out. 😅
Thanks! This worked for pixel 4 on Verizon. My chat has worked with pixel 3 on Verizon and pixel 3 on fi.
These steps worked for me to enable RCS with Firstnet / AT&T (orange sim) on a google pixel 3 xl. Was able to send a chat with read receipt to a sprint customer also using android messages! Many thanks!!
Where is otp pattern?
I also needed to be in the beta
These steps worked for me as well.
This worked for me. Thank you.
That step 9, "YourlsMessenger\sverification\scode\sis\sG-(\d {6}" didn't stick for me trying to save, but I'm seeing the chat service : connected and it appears to be working.
When I click apply nothing happens
My otp isnt staying saved. Note 10+ one oneui btw
This worked great for me! Beta seems to make the chat settings "stick".
I followed all these steps, including enrolling in the beta, but it doesn't seemed to have worked since I didn't get any fancy messages/exclamation point/anything. Maybe I did something wrong? My chat feature status says connected, but I'm still only able to send messages via SMS/MMS.
I'm on a T-Mobile Galaxy S7 edge running Android 8.0.
I couldn't get it to work until I used your exact steps. Thanks for the help! Now I just hope other people I know try to set this up
Just goes to show... There was a literal switch Google could throw to give RCS to everyone.
[deleted]
This. I'm relatively certain it's a newer development since it requires the messages beta to function. It's not working in the regular release according to many. Google seems fed up with the carriers so they're testing their own solution.
[deleted]
Many thanks! It worked for my AT&T Galaxy S8! However, it didn't work for me the first time going through Steps 1-6. So instead I did the following:
I did what you did, so hopefully this helps others:
It should work by then
Edit: oh dear God. Wall of text I can't fix in Boost
Edit edit: NM fixed it. Also I'm on Pixel 4 XL if that matters
That worked for me, but when I went into Chat settings, it's no longer enabled.
Where is "carrier services" located?
[deleted]
Thank you. This worked for me @ LG V40 on TMO
I'm a bot, bleep, bloop. Someone has linked to this thread from another place on reddit:
If you follow any of the above links, please respect the rules of reddit and don't vote in the other threads. (
Yep, glad this is getting coverage.
Oh this is hitting front page of Android Police real soon.
I actually came from there!
Works perfectly! T-Mobile 6t 😁
Same, one plus 6t on T-Mobile... Verified and connected, and don't know a single person that has RCS Lol. Back to WhatsApp and Telegram haha
Also works on my wife's TMO S8+. Yeah I woke her up to set it up. LoL
Are you ded?
Holy shazbot. Success!
Pixel 3a XL, Verizon Prepaid.
Edit: I had to go all the way through the steps. In the future, why not just try changing both activity settings at once first?
Edit2: Something is funky with my RCS. It turns on and off with several conversations, starting with Chat with any new Chat number, but usually falling back to SMS after... Permanently remains "Chat Enabled" in settings though.
Edit3: When I have a problem with a specific chat, toggling in the settings for that chat " Details-Only Send SMS and MMS" seems to fix it!
Edit4: Still testing this, but it may be that sending media temporary breaks RCS afterwards, and then toggling forcing SMS in the chat fixes it.
Edit5: I redid the whole process, starting from clearing data in Carrier Services and Messages. Seems a little more robust now? Hopefully...
Confirmed
Just a note: you don't need to use Activity Launcher if you have Tasker.
With Tasker, you can replace the first 4 steps with:
Then continue with the rest of the steps.
Thanks for the Tasker info, saves us downloading another app.
Similar with nova launcher. You can go to the widget creation and create an activity, look for messages, and follow the steps from the OP
As a Verizon user with a Pixel 2 XL I did the following due to it taking forever to enable the service after I went through the OPs steps:
Following this finally worked for me
After waiting and hanging, even already being on the messages beta, this one worked perfectly and in about 3-5 seconds.
OnePlus 6t - OOS 10 Beta 1
Works on S10+ with Verizon Wireless.
Confirmed
Tested this on a Galaxy Note 9, Galaxy S6, and Pixel 2 XL, all on T-Mobile. Connected on all 3!
Confirmed
You are a beautiful human being
It been saying "setting up..." for the past 10 min
It did that for me, too. Tap the button that says "retry". Then wait a few minutes, and then toggle the "enable chat features" switch off and back on again.
If you're part of Messages Beta, de-enlist and re-enlist (complete the process of deleting upgrades to the app and re-installing) to see if that helps. Worked for me.
Works! I set it up on my phone and my wife's phone and it works. She said "ok, what's the big deal. You see dots when the other person types"
I don't need that negativity in my life!
She's lucky you love you enough to see past her flaws. lololol
This day should be a worldwide holiday. Up there with Christmas and Dday.
I had to join the Messages beta program to get it to work
Interesting, I totally forgot I had done that months ago.
Had to Enable Carrier Services via Google Play!
Before I go through this, I'd like to know, has anyone figured out a way to backup and restore RCS messages? Google documentation says that only the last 25mb of SMS (not MMS) are restored to a new device, and it may not work if you're transferring to an older Android version, as may happen if you go from a Pixel to just about any other phone. I've used SMS Backup & Restore app for years to backup and restore both SMS and MMS, but it can't do RCS. I've read about another app called SMS Share 2 that supposedly can backup RCS sometimes, but can't restore.
that's my favorite back up program...
Been stuck
I did unenroll and re enroll in the beta messages as well.
Can confirm this also works outside the US. No carriers in Denmark bothered with RCS yet. Both I and my SOs phones, OP7 Pro and Huawei P30 Pro were successful.
I got this to work in Canada after a few tries and enrolling in the beta. Pixel 2 XL on Bell
I'm up and running been sending rcs messages to my coworker all day.
It worked TMobile OnePlus 7 pro EDIT: I removed my number after being suggested by numerous individuals lol. Sorry
Confirmed. 👌
Confirmed! Thank you for trying it out with me.
Thanks for the test.
Damnit. After doing all the steps....rebooting...clearing and force-stopping everything and trying all the steps again...now I only ever see "Chat services are unavailable for this device" I can't get it to show anything else by rebooting and trying all the steps again.
The first time I did the steps I got "Setting up"....but it never changed after 10 minutes. So I tried the steps again and that's when I lost it all. Yes wifi has been off the whole time.
Pixel 4 XL on Verizon.
UPDATE: Installing the beta of Messages worked! Now I have a green "Connected" status in chat features! Gonna get it setup with some other family right now so we can test it!
UPDATE 2: CONFIRMED working with Messages Beta on several Pixel 4 XLs on Verizon!!
Showed the setup the first time, but didn't complete after ~5 minutes, went to retry and now not showing up at all. Restarted, cleared cache/storage everything and can't get the setup to show up again :(
edit: after I enabled WiFi and enrolled in the Messages Beta, I have RCS! Now I just need somebody to talk to!
What is the likelihood that Google quickly plugs this hole?
Little to none. Google is planning a rollout for the U.S. and have already done it for the U.K. and France. The only people that would care would be American carriers.
I'm a firm believer that Google doesn't gaf! But someone else did mention that the url is a sandbox, so...
Not receiving verification code from Google.
Worked for me on Telus in Canada!
T-Mobile note 10+
Follow initial steps. Got text message with verification code. Clicked set up, just blue screen saying we will let you know when it's done. The status is trying to verify phone number.
Idk how to clear carrier services, don't have it installed.
Edit:. Got it! Did this
It did that for me, too. Tap the button that says "retry". Then wait a few minutes, and then toggle the "enable chat features" switch off and back on again. I had to click retry again after turning back on.
Edit 2:
On wife's T-Mobile S10+ it never got past the 'unavailable on your device' so I had opt in to Google beta for messages, update messages app to this, then it was there.
I love you!!! 😍😍 Worked for me too!!
Worked on my Pixel 4 XL on Verizon prepaid!
Working on OG Pixel on TMobile!
I'm getting stuck on "excuse the wait"
My God you people are so smart. Works on my OnePlus 6t unlocked. Thank you whoever figured this out. It worked perfectly.
Those credits go to
I just made a more formal thread, with his permission of course.
Working on my OnePlus 6T with T-Mobile. I had the latest version of Messages but I had to install the Beta to get it working, as soon as it installed I was in.
This is working fine for me after an hour on my Pixel 4XL and on T-Mobile. I even took a chance and restarted my phone and it stayed connected!
Wow, this is pretty epic
Got RCS on my unlocked OnePlus 7 Pro on TMobile.
I was able to message one of my friends in the UK with RCS just fine, but since Google rolled out RCS there themselves (I think) I don't know if this will work everywhere. Still cool nonetheless
It should work with any carrier that is using universal profile and are open to other carriers. RCS this way should be using Google Jibe servers which is open to other carriers.
It is stuck at setting up
I take it this is right?
I don't know if anyone posted this already or if anyone will even see this...
But
I was able to get to work on my wife's TMO Pixel 3a but had difficulty with my OnePlus 7 Pro on TMO. I had to disable Blokada to get it to connect and re-enabling the ad blocker caused it to lose connection.
I bypassed in Blokada:
And it works now with Blokada ad blocking enabled. I don't know if all four of them are required but it works and I'm not complaining.
I was looking for this. I had Blokada disabled when I set it up this morning and everything worked. I forgot to turn it on all day and when I did I lost the connection. I just turned Blokada off and waited for a solution. Lol
Using a Pixel 2 XL and I'm getting stuck trying to verify my number. I also noticed that the "OTP Pattern" does not stick which I'm guessing is why it won't verify. Has anyone been able to make OTP Pattern stick?
Sent a 4k video that was sent successfully quickly and the recipient confirmed it looked crystal clear. Can't wait for this to be rolled out officially everywhere.
Does not work on Samsung Galaxy S7 Bought from Optus with Optus boot screen but had Aldi mobile SIM
I open activity launcher, select messages and then set RCS flags and it just switches me to the app (where I last left off) without opening any menu.
This irritates me as I have done this process on a Galaxy s8 (optus) and a Galaxy s10+ (optus) if anyone could suggest a solution I would be extremely grateful.
This is just fucking AWESOME. Working on my OPO 6T on T-Mobile and my dad's Galaxy S8 also T-Mobile!!!
Confirmed
Now I just need somebody to RCS to😕 anyone mind sharing their number?? 😄
[removed]
Ready to test. Anyone?
Confirmed
Worked for me over WiFi also.
Wait, whats supposed to happen after you tap “apply”?? Nothing happens for me.... just same old same old after that.
EDIT: Where is “carrier services” located?
If you force close Messages and reopen it there should be a popup for Chat.
Thumbs up here on tmo with a p3xl
Edit: only person I found easily with RCS is the most obnoxious person in my contacts list. Soooo I struck up a conversation... RCS is nice. This conversation isn't.
LMAO...ahahahahahahaha
Connected on tmo LGV30! Didn't work the first go round so I followed the last steps. Had to hit retry once or twice.
Oh shit got it!!
Works with the additional unenroll from beta, uninstall beta, rejoin beta, upgrade the beta step! T-Mobile Pixel 4 XL unlocked!!
Confirmed working on T-Mobile Pixel 4, verified with someone on Google Fi and another person in Canada.
Rebooted and it's still working too.
Time to go around and set this up for all my friends!
Can't get it to work on my OP5
I got the confirmation code twice but it never verifies the phone.
Holy shit. I cannot believe this actually worked, but I now have RCS on my AT&T Galaxy S9. This just comes to show you can't really deny an Android user anything because there's always a workaround to it.
OMGGGG IT WORKS!!! I am on AT&T on unlocked S10+ and it works I want to test it out if it works!!!
If you activated ,please dm me your number
OnePlus 7T TMobile working and confirmed
OTP Pattern will not apply, no matter what I tried. OG Pixel on Cricket.
You don't actually need it to apply. Set it, tap apply, then go force stop messages and go look in messages at the chat features setting. You may have to do it a couple times, it will never actually show as OTP pattern applied even though it worked
I'm still not sure why exactly I would rather use RCS over SMS. Ok, sure...its pretty and can send longer, richer messages. That just seems to be like a way to get data charges out of control. Can't find much detail on how much data RCS uses. Can anyone enlighten me on data consumption? If someone decides to send me a 4GB video, I have no control over that landing on my phone and consuming all of my Verizon data?
This is gonna be great until they disable it in a week...
Working on Moto Z2 Play on Verizon and on the girlfriend's Moto G6 on MetroPCS.
All it took was installing Messages Beta, setting RCS flags, stopping Carrier Services and clearing data, stopping Messages, setting OTP, restarting Messages, and we were good to go.
Do I gain anything from this if no one I text also does it?
Ugh. I swear I'm the only person this hasn't worked for. Setup went through and got a checkmark that it was done and Chat settings were there. But no connected status. :'(
Says chat feature unavailable for this device when I click it in activity launcher
something i will note, my friends and i all only had success while using the beta version of the Android Messages app
you can enroll here:
Doesn't work for me (
I don't know why I wanted it to enable it so bad. Now that I have it enabled, I don't know anyone with RCS to test it with lol
It's working for me even in India! I mean I'm getting the "Connected" status. However, all my friends are asleep and I could not test it. Is there anyone here that can help test?
I hit apply after step 5 and nothing happened its like the button stopped working. I closed it out and then relaunched the messages app, it gave me a prompt to update the app, I did and it gave me spiel about the new features blah blah, then it had a blue screen with a spinning wheel and nothing happened except a message came up saying something along the lines of: sorry for the wait, clock the button and we'll let you know when it's ready. I did this and literally nothing happened even after 15 minutes. Help?
Mine's stuck at the verifying stage. I've tried some troubleshooting steps, I always get the verification code but it'll still be at verifying.
Razer Phone 2 (unlocked), Lucky Mobile (Canada)
Edit: It now works, followed the tutorial here:
I can't get it to work. I got sent something called a Messenger verification code and that's it. No RCS connection thing, nothing
Even re-doing the steps as instructed to clear data and force stop doesn't do anything.
No luck for me, o got it to tell me to wait while it sets it up but nothing happened after that, it just stayed on the setting up screen
Confirmed it works on my Pixel 2 XL with Verizon (tested with a user in Pakistan).
I can confirm this works on Pixel 4 XL on Verizon.
Took a couple tries on beta but works in Canada on bell - Pixel 2 XL
What is RCS and why would i want it, i just want to know thanks
Replaces sms and MMS. Think of it like iMessage for basically every phone. It's the long overdue version of sms/MMS.
I can confirm on AT&T on a Note 10 Plus, this works. Though, I couldn't clear Carrier Data, so I uninstalled it and reinstalled it, then followed the rest.
Two seconds after step 9, I was connected. I verified my connection through another Sprint phone with Android Messages.
I see writing status, instant message delivery, and my limit for attachments is 105MB. Odd default.
Regardless, it works and I couldn't be happier. Thanks OP.
Cheers from Texas.
Will this help with texting over WiFi?
Can somebody tell me why this wasn't released by Google months ago?
I'm stuck on "status: trying to verify your phone number"
I'm stuck on the 'this will take a while' screen. Was able to get two verification texts early on, but never again, and following all the steps exactly just brings me to the same roadblock.
No worries, just a PITA is all. I'm sure some will have the same experience. BTW: OP3 running ResRemix and AdGuard. I've turned AdGuard off during the process, no difference. Must be some variable or detail I'm missing.
UPDATE 10/29/2019: I tried again today from scratch, and it worked instantly! I've got RCS enabled all of a sudden, don't know why it wouldn't work previously but it's good to go now.
Android Messages and Google messages are the same thing right?
Damn! Im 20 hours late. But downloaded the beta and followed the instructions and it worked ! Who wants to group chat test??!!!! I got noone to test this out with :(
Hey I just got mine set up too. DM #?
Works even in Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹 (Caribbean)
Will it still work if I uninstall activity launcher after the process? Edit: it works
Yes, definitely.
I followed all the steps, also changed OTP pattern and managed to get the option and even received the verification code but I'm stuck at "Status: connecting. Connection in progress". Tried switching the rcs mode on and off on both WiFi and carrier. I'm on a pixel 3a. Any suggestions?
Make sure your phone number doesn't have +1 at the beginning (or whatever your country code is)
I get to the step where Google messages asks if I want to enable this and hit yes. However, it takes me to a screen with a spinner that says excuse the wait while we set up, and it's been spinning like that all day. Can't seem to get this to work. Anyone else have this problem?
Edit: got it to work by downloading "carrier services" from the play store, them clearing the data from both messages and carrier services after it installed. Then I followed the steps again and it worked
Managed to solved it by disabling WiFi while starting the process and enabling it again after a couple of minutes, hitting "get it" and going to settings enable it
Thank you, Working with Fido in Canada with the Note 9. It took about two tries.
Got it enabled but it doesn't really send RCS to others who have RCS enabled. It tries and falls back to SMS after a few minutes.
So this turns it in for inbound and outbound messages on your side...but if they people you're conversing with don't have it enabled, does it change anything?
Got it set up on mine and my spouse's phones. RCS messages show up a a dark blue. Between us it will show messages as sent then received then read.
Not sure I like this... Haha.
A few minutes later though it just reverted to standard SMS. Not sure if both phones have to be in the optimal RCS state or what.
This is awesome! I need to set up my wife and all my friends' phones ASAP!
Is anyone else notifying considerable lag time b/t sending a message to someone with chat enabled & them actually receiving it? It either doesn't go thru and switches back to SMS or it takes forever to send with RCS
So I did all the steps and the extra steps but I never get a prompt when I open Messages.i only get the exclamation on the top and when I tap it it says "Do more with messages" and I hit next. That's when I get stuck on this:
Can anyone help? Verizon on Pixel 2 XL
Edit: Cleared Messages data and it works!
Mine is activated, I'm with AT&T.
The person I'm sending messages to was activated by their carrier in Canada (Koodo) that uses the Universal Profile.
Does not seem to be working, all messages are still SMS.
Can confirm it works per the instructions as described. It worked after the third try on T-Mobile oneplus6T converted to international version per XDA guide.
i have read some here that they works only in US, well im in Switzerland 🇨🇭 and that worked perfect for me too. thanks to all for the contribution
got everything to work except under chat features status is staying on connecting, i never get the the green "connected" tried force closing messages, clearing data of carrier services, tried wifi and data, nothing seems to work. suggestions are welcomed, thanks!
To answer questions about this topic. I have a S9 locked with Verizon and this 'hack' worked for me.
It doesn't matter if the messages app says that chat features aren't available.
You need to make sure you are running Messages (Beta). You can get the beta version from either APKMirror or from the app page on the Google Play Store.
Not sure if anyone's mentioned this anywhere.. There's a update out today for Android messages beta. I figured I'd take one for the team and install it. RCS still works like a charm after the update!
I finally got this to work after much trial and error. Thanks to the OP and community.
Just a heads up: I had to have port 5061 unblocked at the office Wi-Fi for it to connect.
Mine stopped working a few minutes ago. Tried setting it up again, but it says Chat is not available on my device.
Just happened to me as well, minutes ago. I'm on a Samsung S9+. US AT&T. Chat says not available on device.
Edit: My buddy sitting next to me has a Pixel 4, Verizon and its still working fine.
I went through the same steps to no avail. Interestingly enough, the first time I set this up I had 3 options for url. Now when reattempting, there's only the one option. I cleared cache on messages and it didn't work, I'm hesitant to clear data because I don't want to lose pictures and texts.
Same
OP6T on TMo was working fine until a few hrs ago. I've tried original procedure to no avail, reinstalling messages, clearing data from carrier services, etc to no avail. Maybe they patched it, going back to Pulse
Mine is no longer working, it just shows Connecting. I'm sad now :/
Very strange - Enabled it on my own OnePlus 7 Pro, my friends OnePlus 7 Pro, and my other friends OnePlus 6T. They all worked, I did all of them yesterday (oct. 30 around 2pm EST) and i was able to see read recipts, everything. Then this afternoon we noticed that chat bubbles had went back from dark blue (RCS-on) to light blue. For some reason it had been disabled on all of ours. We didnt change anything, delete any apps/cache/data, do anything different. And now, none of us can re-enable it (tried reinstalling messages, carrier services, activity launcher, on wifi, off wifi, restarting phone whenever possible.)
I'm using a pixel 2. On step 10, it says hit apply. There isn't any bar that says apply.
Help.
You need to add to the guide that the first thing they need to do is turn off Wi-Fi before they attempt setup or it won't work.
Worked for me on 5ghz wifi.
Worked on Verizon Pixel 2 XL!!
Didn't work for me. I got the prompt to enable but it never worked, so then I went to do the additional steps and I can't get OTP Pattern to save the selected value nor can I see the setup screen again. And I can't unset the ACS Url now to try do things completely over.
Did you clear the carrier services data and force close messages before doing it?
And also works on my wife's Pixel 3a, on Mint Mobile. Woo!
I'm stuck while it's loading, TMobile op7pro. Like I can get to the setup page and it will have the loading circle but it stays on it. Edit: I'm stuck on "excuse the wait"
Takes 3-5 minutes. Turn off WiFi before doing setup If those don't work follow the extra steps
Had to turn off wifi to get it to connect.. After a reboot, it connected briefly, then chat features disappeared again... One plus 6t on tmobile...
Not working for me. Pixel 3A on T-Mobile. Maybe because I am running Messenger Beta?
Worked for me. TMobile using a Google store bought Pixel 3. I am also on Messenger Beta.
Nope, nothing. Using ATT. Figures. Knowing AT&T they most likely baked in a feature that blocks this hack.
worked fine for me when i joined beta program
Did not work for me. Pixel 2, Mint Mobile. Stuck on verifying phone number.
Edit : Uninstalled and reinstalled Messages Beta to make it work. Texting the provided number to confirm.
Went thru it and opened Messages, the chat features toggle is on, flipped it on, said "setting up", then went away and now the toggle is gone.
OnePlus 6T on Cricket
Got it to work on Note 10+ Verizon. Anyone wants to send me their number so I can test it out?
Anyone have any luck with Pixel 4xl on Verizon?
Nope
It works. Texting from South Korea via KT sending to a friend using Globe in the Philippines.
I got it working on my OP7T on Metro by Tmo.
Sent message to OP and RCS message shows as delivered!
Tried it on Pixel 2 XL on T-Mobile and unsure if it worked. When I go to Messages->Settings->Chat Features, it still says "Chat Features unavailable for this device" (carrier).
It didn't. Do you have the beta version of Messages? Download it if you don't.
Worked on my Pixel 3 with Videotron ! Im in Canada
Can anyone else confirm AT&T?
S10 unlocked on T-Mobile firmware. Sent message to OP number and type is RCS message shows delivered!
Is it confirmed that you have to have joined messages beta? If so I think you should update the post
Awesome. Worked on OnePlus 7 pro model GM1917 on T-Mobile.
Do you have to keep action launcher installed to keep RCS?
