Darn that global warming!

Since winter generally begins on December 21st, all this talk about an early winter now (or late winter in some years) is nonsense. The earliest winter can begin is December 20th and the latest it can begin is December 22nd, no matter how cold or warm it is.

@Ken - we may have to give in on this. John Legend and Kelly Clarkson opened up the holiday floodgates and it's winter music everywhere, even outside at lunch. (BTW, does John Legend know that last name sounds just a little too self-confident? Maybe when Elizabeth Warren is done needling the billionaires, she could deal with people with names like Legend and Perfect?) Tune of “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas Now” (John Legend's version, from his "A Legendary Christmas" album - which IS really good) Have yourself a merry little cold front Careful not to freeze Don a coat that’s right for 22 degrees. Have yourself a merry little cold front No one likes a grinch. Weather Service promises just half an inch. If I’m caught by a freezing spell Sniffling, sneezing spell today I’ll pretend that it’s Christmas Eve Sneeze into my sleeve, then say: Really soon we all may have some flurries, Let’s not have a cow. Just move slow, there’s no need to bring out the plow. And have yourself a merry little cold front now.

New Yorkers should expect an early winter this year. In New York winter is expected to come early in the year of 2019. There could be light snow starting in November which is a whole month earlier. The NYC sanitation dept. have sent out a snow alert for Tuesday and are taking things very seriously because of the unexpected snowstorm of November 2018. The sanitation department has 1,600 plow trucks and 705 salt spreaders ready to be sent out if there is more than 2 inches of snow. The temperature could drop to the mid 20's. Also there could be a foot of snow fall in the eastern/western side of New York. On early Wednesday morning the temperature could drop to single digits. By the end of the week the temperatures will go up but it will still be cold for this time of the year. There could be harsh driving conditions because of the snow so the sanitation dept. wants everything under control.

@Aisha Faisal , regarding "New Yorkers should expect an early winter this year. In New York winter is expected to come early in the year of 2019.: Yes, we need to be ready, and the alerts are on target. But when I came back from Florida on Sunday night Nov. 3, I was surprised and kind of delighted that at least all the businesses I saw in New York had decided that Christmas season was already here, or at least the Christmas shopping season was. Last week felt like, be of good cheer, and you're gonna like it for two months, whether you like it or not. (I am giving in, mostly. I just don't want the Christmas songs in the radio while Im working yet. The new "Baby It's Cold Outside" is ok, since that's weather (sort of), not Christmas.)

Winter begins when we bring the indoor plants back in from their summer vacation on the porch. That usually happens the first week or so in November, when a 33-degree Fahrenheit night could do them all in.

@B. That's wonderful. A neighbor said for her, winter is when she stops having ice in her soft drink. Ice in hard drinks is year-round, of course. Re "Winter begins when we bring the indoor plants back in" - "Little Shop of Horrors" is on our block, and the plants have stayed inside all the time in the theater. Winter may be when prices go to a $700 off-Broadway high for holiday break. But your demarcation is so poetic, in all great ways, like from an Inge play.
