I have not tried it. I would not wait in long lines for one. The taste probably makes it so trendy.

I have ate at popeyes before but i have never had the chicken sandwich, mostly because my city doesn’t have a popeyes...yet. The closest ones are both two hours away and i would honestly drive that distance to sit in line just to eat the chicken sandwich. I have many friends that have tried the chicken sandwich and they keep telling me that it was the best sandwich ever but i also have some that think its a mediocre sandwich and that chick-fil-a is still the better chicken restaurant. For me to know though i need to try this sandwich and my taste buds will be the judge of who has the better chicken restaurant.

I personally don't like popeyes, I actually hate it if we're being honest. And no I haven't tried the chicken sandwich , and no I'm not willing to, but ill still talk about it. I feel like if I would've tired the popeyes chicken sandwich I would be trading on chick fil a and they've been loyal to me so i got to do the same. A viral food trend to me would be chick fil a's macaroni. I've had better like my mom, but for a fast food restaurant, that's not soul food, it was pretty good. No I would not wait in those long lines, I would not get there early before they even opened, and I would not argue with nobody over a chicken sandwich.

Currently, there has been a lot of attention brought towards the chicken sandwich that is now back at Popeyes. Just a couple of days ago, I have tried the chicken sandwich for the first time. I think that the fact that it was on the menu for only a limited amount of time is what brings all of the “hype” towards the sandwich. In my opinion, the advertising made it seem like the chicken sandwich was the best thing ever. I don’t think that the sandwich is any different than any other chicken sandwich. I believe that the sandwich is overrated and can be a waste of money. In my opinion, the Chick-Fil-A sandwich is better and costs less. It is $3.69 for a chick fil a sandwich, but $3.99 for a Popeye’s chicken sandwich. Currently, there has been a lot of attention brought towards the chicken sandwich that is now back at Popeyes. I have not tried the Popeyes chicken sandwich yet, but I know a lot of people that have eaten this viral sandwich. I believe that if one person posts a specific type of food and hypes it up, then everyone will try and get on the trend and see what’s all the hype about. Chick-fil-A sandwich is really good, and I’ve heard a mixture of reviews from people who have tried both. I need to try the sandwich for myself so I can see which sandwich is better and see what’s the hype all about. I think the sandwich is more viral just because of the comparison with this and Chick-fil-A.
Nayyer Ahmed (Glenbard West HS Glen Ellyn IL)
@Jalen Moore I recently tried the Popeyes chicken sandwich and I have to say it is an impressive meal. For the short price of $6.97 I was able to receive not only an excellent chicken sandwich but fries and a drink. In my opinion the sandwich is fantastic ,it’s an elegant dance of amazing flavors. The oily moist bun is the perfect vessel for the spicy yet amazing tender chicken. The sharp taste of pickle cuts through the intense savory flavor of the chicken and the bun, not to mention the sauce that it places at just the right amount to not overpower any other element of the dish. With the fries I was pleasantly surprised by the nice seasoning that was gently sprinkled on. In my preference Dr. Pepper is the best drink and it makes the entire dish work together. Popeyes did an excellent job with this dish, but don’t deceived by the Internet fad it still is a fast food chicken sandwich. You aren’t paying for gourmet food, not to the likes of which the internet describes. So keep that in mind when you eat the sandwich. The sandwich is good and in my opinion is at par with the chick fil a sandwich. So if you decide to eat this dish just forget the Internet craze and eat it as a chicken sandwich otherwise you might me disappointed.

If waiting in line for hours on end only to be stabbed is the result for trying to join in on the Popeyes chicken sandwich crave, I’ll skip, thanks. Though I haven’t tried the sandwich yet, I don’t particularly feel like I’m missing out. For a five minute meal, America is taking this event and running with it. In the related article, it’s mentioned that multiple other fast food chains are chiming in on the news of the sandwich. Even though big companies are rapidly fueling the popularity, people shouldn’t turn violent when waiting to try it. Imagine dying over a sandwich. Viral foods are becoming more widespread now that we have social media to show off pictures of our cool looking foods. Going to Starbucks and ordering their new unicorn Frappuccino, even though it may not taste as good as your usual order, makes your social media look better, right? Hopping onto a trend by buying avocado toast just for the picture and barely trying it afterwards is okay, right? Sacrificing your tastes for a picture that looks just like everyone else's is wasteful. If your goal is to be different, don’t jump onto the bandwagon and be identical to all the other fakers. Try something new because you want to do it. Even if your tastes swing you towards a viral food, try it proudly. At least you aren’t doing it for the same reasons as everyone else.

As a vegetarian, my take on the fast food world may be fairly different from yours. I spend lots of time driving around with my friends, hanging out, and of course getting food. However I often find myself simply not eating when we go out. Burger King, which I had never been to before becoming vegetarian, is now the only place I can go to when I'm in a rush. They have the option of both the impossible burger and a veggie burger. While I know that not everyone is vegetarian, I feel as if many people are and that there should be at least one substitute meal at each food chain. In the article people are obsessing over this Popeye's chicken sandwich. While I've never been to Popeye's, the return of this sandwich has caused “long lines”, and selling out. The popularity of a sandwich amazes me and makes me wonder when they’ll have some meatless options.

The popeyes chicken sandwich came out on Sunday, November third. On that specific day i wanted Chick-fil-a sandwich but then settled for a popeyes chicken sandwich. When I first tried it I noticed that it was very crispy and tasted really good, it was very delicious but in my opinion it was overhyped and didn’t taste as good as you'd think. This sandwich is unique in it's own way due to the crispiness and the taste it’s different but not like it's revival Chick-fil-a. I haven't tried any other “viral” foods. For a food to be trendy like this sandwich it need a competition or a reason to commit a crime for.
Ainsley Woodruff (Hoggard High School : Wilmington, NC)
I actually have tried viral food . I was just talking to a friend about the Popeye's chicken sandwich. He said it was way better than the infamous classic “chick fil a sandwich.” I have never tried it myself but the viral food I have tried was the chick fil a mac n cheese. it didn’t get as much hype as the Popeye's chicken sandwich but it was a big deal. Another viral food was the impossible whopper at Burger King. I choose not to put Burger King’s food in my body but my vegan aunt and my dad swear by it. Viral foods are so intriguing to us because of thief amazing advertisements. Youtube ads, word to mouth, signs and social pop ups. They make it impossible to get away from you see it everywhere and you assume that they must hype it up for a reason so you go try it. These foods are hardly ever worth it in my opinion. Every person I talked to about the unicorn frappe said it was gross it was more of a looks thing or look what I bought type of deal. These viral foods can really sink or float the company. They can do great like the Popeye's chicken sandwich or the can flop like the tie dye frappe. The viral food takes lots of money to advertise and from there it can bring in a ton of money, or it doesn't. Creating viral foods are really unpredictable and risky which is why I think they are not as common.
Perry Troutman (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Ainsley Woodruff I completely agree with you about it being part of advertising. Companies use these “trends” to advertise in big ways. Viral foods do bring in a lot of people to their companies. The more people you can catch their attention, the more people you have buying your stuff to see if the rumors are true.
Jordyn Reeves (Lubbock, Tx)
In today's world, almost everyone is on some social media platform, which means that whenever something goes "viral" everyone is going to want to join in on the trend. For example, the new Popeyes chicken sandwich. Although I have yet to try the sandwich, I believe that it's overhyped. While it might taste good, I do not think it can be much better than the Chick fil A chicken sandwich. People posting things makes others want to try to because that is how things are today. A couple people do it, and everyone else has to hop on the trend too. While many many other people did, I don't think I would wait in an hour line for this sandwich.
Ainsley Woodruff (Hoggard High School : Wilmington, NC)
@Jordyn Reeves I totally agree with what you said about viral foods being a trend and the people wanting to be apart of it. I didn't see it like that until after reading your entry. You worded that very well. Although i haven't tried the sandwich myself I can also agree with you when you say it can't be much better than the Chick fil a sandwich.

The delicious popeyes spicy chicken sandwich is creating an overwhelming hype all over the US. The lines go out the store and seem to go on for miles. However the question is, “Does the popeyes sandwich live up to the hype?” I strongly believe this tasty sandwich lives up to the hype. The first time I tried the sandwich I was shocked. I had never really been a fan of popeyes until I tried their spicy chicken sandwich. After finishing it in what seemed to be 5 seconds, I decided I had to go get another one the next day. However when I went back, I was extremely saddened to find out that they ran out of chicken! I read that they wouldn't have them back until November, so I waited patiently and when the day came for the sandwiches to return, I was ecstatic. I headed down to popeyes and the line was forever long. I sat in that line for 45 minutes! However, when I got to enjoy my long awaited sandwich, It was so worth it. I think what makes this sandwich so special is how different it tastes from any other sandwich. I believe this sandwich lives up to the hype, so go down to popeyes and give it a try if you haven't yet. It will be worth it!

When foods go viral, people feel like they have to try them. They want to be included. They want to be know what's going on and they want to be able to put their two cents in. This leads to more publicity for the food. When everyone says that the item is "the best thing they have ever tried" more and more people want to try it; It's a constant cycle. It's similar to when LuluLemon became popular. You start seeing more and more people pop up wearing the same clothing brands. Human beings just want to feel included. They want to feel like they are apart of "the group". They think that the only way to accomplish that is to be like everyone else.
Jaden Davenport (Lubbock, TX)
There are a lot of factors that can make things trendy. In this case it is the fact that the sand which is really good. However, in the case of the unicorn frappuccino from Starbucks it was only trendy because it was a crazy new drink. Its bright pink colors attracted the internet even though the drink itself was noir very good. Most of the times what is trendy is determined by the items popularity on the internet whether it be good or bad
Kenzie Redfearn (Lubbock, TX)
A trendy food has to fit three categories: hype, advertisement and taste. Every food that can be considered "trendy" has some type of hype behind it. Majority of foods that first come out typically launch with excitement; however, they are usually overhyped. Advertisement is found everywhere, from commercials to build-boards. If a brand does not put out good enough advertisement, no one will stop and get their product. Lastly and most importantly, the taste. If the taste of the food product is not desired by the public, the item will not go viral. Trendy foods must fulfill their hype, be advertised rather well and taste spectacular to earn their title all over social media.
Travis Letkeman (Lubbock, Tx)
I do not believe that the Popeye’s Chicken Sandwich lives up to the hype. I think that it is just another normal chicken sandwich. It was overhyped and over advertised for being just basic. The sandwich has actually been out a lot longer than advertised, but people just didn’t eat it until it became an internet trend. As soon as people saw that Popeye’s was selling out of these mediocre sandwiches then others wanted them. The sandwich in no way compares to Chick-Fil-A chicken sandwich. The Popeye’s chicken sandwich went viral and now nobody cares about it. It is old news and outdated people have already moved onto the next “viral” food. People are just waiting to flock to the next mediocre food that is slightly appetizing just because others are doing it. If people were to have their own opinions and not just the same ones as those on Twitter then Popeye’s would not have sold out of these at best School Cafeteria chicken sandwiches.
Sophia Caparelli (Hoggard Highschool in Wilmington, NC)
@Travis Letkeman I don't usually get super excited about internet trends like this either. I absolutely LOVE chick-fil-a and I don't think I could stray very far from it for something hyped up like this on social media.
Aspen Sulistio (Lubbock)
I most certainly have tried the chicken sandwich. I believe it lives up to they hype in the eyes of the holder. When you bite into it, you get a perfectly steamed butter bun and then this juicy, crispy chicken. You can hear the outside of the chicken crunch like a potato chip but the inside is juicy. It is also paired with mayonnaise slabbed on and pickle chips to add acidity and additional texture. As good as this magical sandwich is, I would personally wait for the line to die down and wait a few weeks to sink my teeth into that cajun creation. I think what makes this different than others is they geared it to compete against chick fil a which has been the dominant fried chicken sandwich leader for years.
Nkozi Spore (Kauai, Hawaii)
One place I have eaten at is in n out. In my opinion, the animal sauce does not live up to the hype. It looks like throwup and tastes like a jumble of food. It is also really easy to make a huge mess in the car and the worst part is that it stains. SO no, I don't think that in n out lives up to the hype.
Bill (mars)
I have tried avocado toast but I don't know if it is a viral food. At my grandparents house my grandpa has 6 avocado trees and when they become ripe we will try to give the most we can away before they all rot because we can't eat so much.
John (United States)
I haven't tried the Popeyes chicken sandwich in fact I have never eaten at Popeyes. I wouldn't wait in long lines to get 2 pieces of bread with a greasy piece of chicken in the middle. I have never tried any "viral" foods. I just eat food that looks good to me and the "Impossible Whopper" or the "Unicorn Frappuccino" or avocado toast do not look good to me. I have never cared what makes food trendy in fact I didn't know food could be trendy before this day.
Matthew Byrnes (Hoggard Wilmington NC)
@John I could not agree with you more, I only eat foods that i know taste good already or look appealing to me. things like the unicorn Frappuccino doesn't look or sound appealing to me at all. I'm not affected by trends with food or fashion at all but I won't stop you from doing your own thing.
Saige (Kauai, hawaii)
I have never even gone to popeyes before and I never heard of this type of sandwich either. Just looking at this picture I am not waiting in line for that either. You can just make that at home. I never heard that there was a hype about it either. Well, there is no Popeyes on Kauai so yah. I have tried rolled icecream which I heard so much hype about that. It's like all over insta and youtube. To be honest it is good. I tried the strawberry flavored one. I like to hear of some trendy food but on Kauai, there isn't that many choices or even shops that sell them
Nene (America)
I think what makes a food trend is if that food can cause controversy. Such as the Impossible Whopper got fame because the beef was made out of purely vegetables yet still taste like real meat. The unicorn frappuccino got trendy from a video I believe a barista-made about the drink. In the video, he roasts the drink. From that viral video, it made people curious to wanna try it. The avocado toast was made famous by Instagram models/Instagram foodies as they would post this nonstop making it such a hype. Along with it being all over internet it was also really healthy. Then other people getting on the hype creating stuff like avocado recipes or avocado diets. Two things that many people search for recipes and ways to lose weight. I think foods can get popular by controversy. Like when Kylie Jenner posted a video of her ramen then that was all the hype for a period of time.
Hope Heinrichs (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Nene I like your idea of controversy spreading a food trend. The examples you used, like the Starbucks frappuccino and avocado recipes, remind me of all the crazy things we will try to become more popular on social media. Food is so powerful because everyone wants and needs it. The idea of "viral" foods spread excitement and something that we can all relate to, and when a celebrity endorses it, we want in on the trend too.
Momoko (Kauai, HI)
I think what makes people want to try those "viral" foods is the name, influencers trying them, and the advertising of that food. For example, "unicorn Frappuccino" is the perfect name for you to imagine rainbow or colorful drinks, it might even bring your childhood back by just hearing unicorns. But, I believe that they're not as good as they make it sound since I think they're just trying to make the food look good more than trying to make them tasty. Because of that, people would put those foods on social media and make it more viral.
Jojo (Planet Earth)
First of all, trendy foods are kind of entertaining. Let's take avocado toast as an example. One time someone cut up some nice, green avocado and put it on top of a piece of slightly crispy bread and maybe put a little bit of pepper sprinkled on top. They told their neighbor about it, who posted a photo on Instagram, and their followers all tried the "recipe". Just like that, putting a random vegetable on top of toast is "trendy". Secondly, are these trendy foods really that good? Or do people hype themselves up about trying this new food and even if they don't like it, they still gush about how amazing it is because everyone thinks it is amazing?
Clay Dean (Lihue, HI)
I have never tried a Popeyes chicken sandwich, so I'd never be able to tell you what the difference is between a Popeyes chicken sandwich and a regular chicken sandwich. I've never even tried the Impossible Whopper or Unicorn Frappuccino from Starbucks. The only reason food becomes trendy is because companies want it to be. They advertise their products heavily, and always will. It doesn't matter what they are.
Kirra (HI)
I have never eaten the Popeyes chicken sandwich before and to be honest, I do not plan too. They do not look very appetizing to me. I think viral foods can be very fun and an exciting way to try new foods that are on the market. I did try the Impossible Whopper from Burger King and I can say that it was very good. Personally, I am not much for fast food, but I really enjoyed the burger. I like that chain restaurants are being more environmentally friendly and choosing to make better choices.
Malia (Kauai)
In my opinion, most viral foods are overrated and I try my best to stay clear from them. I have never had the Impossible Whopper or a Popeyes chicken sandwich. I haven't even tried the Unicorn Frappuccino from starbucks. I honestly believe that most of these things are ridiculous; however, one popular drink that I absolutely love is the Starbucks pink drink. It is the only viral food that I get religiously. Although I do drink the pink drink, I think it's important to lower the amount of viral foods one should consume and stick to only one.
Mila (Kauai)
I have never tried a Popeyes chicken sandwich, or a unicorn frappe, but I have tried avocado toast. My family has been eating it since way before the hype began. But it definitely lives up to the hype! Its the perfect breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Its super delicious and healthy. I would say most trendy foods must be trendy because they are delicious.
Rex (Kauai, HA)
I think that in an age where companies have such a presence on social media and are more able to communicate with the customers, marketing can be done in ways that appeal more to the customers than just saying "we now have this food item." Companies can make more comedic videos, or base them around an established joke that is popular at the time of release, for better or worse. Ultimately, I think the ability to market the product on more platforms and in more customer-friendly ways really helps out with making new menu items more popular than they would be.
Joaquin (Kauai)
The closest thing I've gotten to even be popular that I eat would be in-n-outs. in-n-outs its really doesn't have a specific food that makes is popular it just is. anything you order is just in there. so I really don't know much about trendy food. I guess what makes it popular is if its good and popular influences advertise it. Also, the amount of advertising the company does. the thing is in-n-outs really never advertises, only to tell the next exit theirs one. which means its must just be that good. overall I think the tastefulness and advertisements really make a food item "trendy" or "viral"
Davin (Hawaii)
I haven't tried any popular food from fast food places, but I do make popular food at home. Taco Salad is very popular and I make it with Doritos, trust me you will never go back to the normal salad. I feel food gets popular for the same reason people do, it is something that everyone can agree on and will just jump on the train for especially if popular people recommend it. Also, the wackier you can make the food the more attention it will grab, like an interesting piece of art. Overall, food is great and everyone enjoys food, it is something that has connected people for as long as we have existed.
Carter Moses (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
I have yet to be able to try this new popeyes chicken sandwich because there are no popeyes anywhere around me. Although I have been wanting to try one for myself. I would probably wait a good while in trying to get one of these for myself. Honestly, I'm not too sure what would make popeyes chicken sandwich so much different from the other fast-food restaurants it is probably just because it is newer. I haven't tried many "viral foods" but I have tried a few. I got to try in-n-out burger probably 5 years ago when I went on vacation to California. I don't remember exactly how good it was or if it lived up to its word but I do remember it being pretty good. The thing I think makes food trendy is just if everyone else is attracted to it or its a popular craze.
Eve (HI)
Where I live we have no Popeyes, but we do have Burger King. I thought that it was a great idea to be more eco friendly with the Impossible Whopper. I try not to eat that much beef, pork, and other red meats so when this came out I was excited to try it. I didn't go into the Burger King drive through with high expectations because I'd heard a few reviews from friends saying it was not worth all the hype. I thought it was really good! The patty tasted like meat, which I wasn't expecting, the texture was a little weird but that wasn't a big deal to me. I think there is room for improvement but they are definitely on the right track with this burger.
Alla Baba (Hawaii)
I have never tried any of these "food fads" but I would love to try some of them one day. But most of them I wouldn't waste my time waiting hours for. In my opinion, what makes a food trendy is if is made with quality and tastes as good as it was made.
Jade (the galaxy)
I've tried various "trendy/viral" foods. and can conclude that they can tend to be a bit overrated at times, and can tend to get too hyped up for the reality of it. Such as the unicorn frappe, the crepe cake, and the rainbow bagel. I have personally tried all of these, and I feel like they were a huge let down for the actuality of it. I definitely would not recommend something that could be too good to be true, which is what most trendy/viral food is. It's actually an advertisement tactic. The harsh reality wake up call, and lesson you can learn from this is that if something indeed looks too good to be true, it probably is.
Averi (HAWAII)
A couple of years ago, when the Unicorn Frappe was blowing up on social media, I wanted to try it so badly. It was so colorful and fun looking. I had had a secret menu cupcake frappe, and I loved it, so I thought this would taste similar. Boy was I wrong. The whipped cream was good enough, but the drink tasted awful. I expected sweet, and I got an odd sour-y lime mixture that did not live up to its hype. I was surprised, but that taught me not to always listen to reviews. I'll judge it once I see it/try it.
Veda (HI)
I've never tried a Popeyes chicken sandwich before but it doesn't look very appetizing. I have tried other viral foods such as the Impossible Whopper and avocado toast. The Impossible Whopper was better than I expected and tasted like real meat. I 100% support the cause especially since it is helping the environment. I make myself avocado toast at home and think it gets more credit than it deserves. It is still a good snack and tasty but not all "that".
Gigi Anders (07601)
I went to Popeyes on Monday to see for myself what all the fuss was about. The line was out the door and there’s no drive-through. It was after school and most customers were high schoolers. I waited in my car for about half an hour, when the crowd started thinning out, and made a run for it. I ordered one spicy and one regular sandwich, because, having never eaten Popeyes, I wasn’t sure which way to go. I ate the spicy one first and yes, it was revelatory. Some evil genius came up with the perfect combo: the sturdy brioche bun with a trace of sweetness, the spicy mayo that was assertive yet subtle enough even for those who think twice about spice, the big fat deep-fried chicken breast that was crunchy on the outside and umami-faultless on the inside, the pickles that created an extra crunch and chilled freshness ... Well. What can I tell you? It’s sensational. I don’t want it again anytime soon — I’d turn into a hippo-ette and I’m kind of anti-fast food and not really into sandwiches — but I’m happy I tried it. Oh. And the regular one was yummy, too.
