Key Moments From Corey Lewandowski’s Testimony Before Congress

Clark Landrum (Near the swamp.)
Court proceedings and rules of evidence are designed to uncover the truth. Partisan congressional proceedings seem designed to obscure the truth. Mr. Berke showed the politicians how a real lawyer gets the job done. The politicians should just shut up and let the professionals discover the truth of the situation.
ElectAClown-ExpectACircus (Around the next bend or so...)
And he wants to run for Congress...? He should have been held in contempt immediately after the hearing. C'mon Dems, get tough!
rich (hutchinson isl. fl)
It is plain that every future hearing have staff lawyers begin the process of questioning witnesses, uninterrupted. The politicians can put on their show following the actual exposure of the witnesses conduct.
David B. (Albuquerque NM)
File contempt charges against this smart aleck liar and fine him. It's not just Congress he is contemptuous of -- it's the American public that has a right to know what is going on.
ChairmanMetal (Bolivia, NC)
Mr. Lewandowski said: “I have no obligation to have a candid conversation with the media whatsoever...". In other words, this gentleman believe he has no obligation to be honest with the American public. Just one member of a large gang of liars, led by Donald Trump, whose arrogance and contempt for democracy, the rule of law, and we "common" people knows no boundaries. Kudos to the Judiciary Committee for exposing this particular Trump lackey for the person he really is.
BobK (World)
@ChairmanMetal Agree in principal, but strenuously object to referring to this miserable wretched excuse for a man as a “gentleman” . . . it rankles me no end and makes my skin crawl every time a TV news pundit or other responsible broadcaster refers to a terrorist, a mass murderer, or any other miscreant as a “gentleman” . . . just simply does not compute!
Bill Prange (Californiia)
I had to refresh my memory, and looked up Lewandowski. Ah yes, the Roman Catholic who publicly mocked a ten year old with autism. Womp womp. The child was an immigrant, so fair game for Corey! Also had an affair with Hope Hicks, despite being the father of four children for whom, one might conjecture, he wanted to be a role model. A good role model, that is. And now today's performance. What are his children to think about a man who mocks his questioners, evades answering, and admits to lying on national television? We know what the country thinks. Pathetic.
Trez (California)
Imagine if Hillary behaved like this at her Congressional hearing.
Bruce Mincks (San Diego)
Another highlight you had to see: as reported, Corey kicked off his testimony my making it obvious he intended to obstruct all questions in any way he could get away with short of perjury. The testimony immediately followed Nadler's and Collins' opening statements. Collins' entire speech was about the Democrats are starting their normal carnaval where they insult everybody and, in denying the real reasons Hillary lost the election [it got worse; I'm summarizing for relevance] will continue to waste time and money in their assault on Trump that began when they used the Dossier to strip Carter Page of his Civil Rights, etc. On and on, references to a SHOW and a FARCE and a SHAM to distract us from the truth. Then within minutes Lewandowski is starring in that very show. Hard to see this strategy winning in 2020.
BobK (World)
@Bruce Mincks “Hard to see this strategy winning in 2020.” Well, well, you never know, TV reality shows notwithstanding to the contrary and still predominant in the American public psyche. Remember 2016! Never Forget!
Leo (Croton-on-Hudson, NY)
@BobK ...Agree..and then there is that truth of all truths: Time wounds all heels.
The Truth (Manhattan)
See Congress’s Contempt Power and the Enforcement of Congressional Subpoenas: Law, History, Practice, and Procedure by Todd Garvey. Congressional Research Service. www.crs.gov (“Congress has three formal methods by which it can combat non compliance with a duly issued subpoena. Each of these methods invokes the authority of a separate branch of government. First, the long dormant inherent contempt power permits Congress to rely on its own constitutional authority to detain and imprison a contemnor until the individual complies with congressional demands. Second, the criminal contempt statute permits Congress to certify a contempt citation to the executive branch for the criminal prosecution of the contemnor. Finally, Congress may rely on the judicial branch to enforce a congressional subpoena. Under this procedure, Congress may seek a civil judgment from a federal court declaring that the individual in question is legally obligated to comply with the congressional subpoena.”).
Mary C. (NJ)
@The Truth, well, I hope Chairman Nadler reads your informative summary. Which of these procedures do you think he should use against witnesses who show contempt like Lewandowski's?
Jim (Pennsylvania)
My take? He's terrified. He knows what he's done, knows of the trump obstruction and does not want to be caught up in it.
BobG (Rhinebeck, NY)
@Jim, I think the opposite Jim.
Joseph (California)
I’ve lost all faith in Nadler. Are the Democrats going to be complicit in the continued destruction of our democracy? Please Ms. Pelosi, it’s time to play hardball and at least hold this man in contempt of Congress.
Tina (CA)
Does anyone realize what's happened? Barry Berke got Lewandowski to confirm that Trump had him try and get Sessions to issue a statement absolving Trump of any crime when neither McGahn nor Sessions would do it. While I don't credit either McGahn or Sessions with any real moral compass, they are both lawyers and surely knew that the president was asking them to assist him in obstructing justice. Then Berke got Lewandowski to acknowledge a powerful motive for doing what Sessions and McGahn wouldn't: Trump promised him a high level job. That is the definition of corrupt behavior. You couldn't script a more open and shut case. I don't think Trump is going to make it to his 2nd term.
nann Dave (Ca)
@Tina From your lips to God’s ears. Lewandowski really is a nasty piece of work. And really unintelligent
Mike (Somewhere In Idaho)
Wow bombshells all over the place - not. The minstrel show keeps marching along without a leader, purpose or end goal. Like I guess the 22 folks with great ideas, if you like spending other people’s money, running to replace Trump. Let’s all try and gorge on these nothing burghers so we can shed those nasty pounds we’ve all collected being glued to the national media melt down. What a joke on us.
Bob Guthrie (Australia)
Happy Birthday Mr Lewandowski. Although your abrasive obfuscation and contemptuous arrogance superficially looked effective, legally you implicated yourself again in the conspiracy. You had already admitted to Mueller guilt in that matter about participating in asking Sessions to recuse himself in order to obstruct a legal investigation. There is an odious redolence of consciousness of guilt about your current testimony. You have already admitted it under oath to Mueller. Only... only Mr Trump was impressed by your DISSEMBLING during the hearing. You do understand don't you that he will throw you under the bus when it suits him? Do you realise that when the DOJ is not run by Barr you will be in grave legal peril for your stunt in front of Congress? Ultimately the American people will probably cook your goose in 2020; Trump will not be powerful then and your short term thinking may well bring you undone. Many happy returns but 2 returns from now you might be having your birthday cake in jail.
IGUANA (Pennington NJ)
Sadly Democrats are so easy to mess with. They knew that Lewandowski was not going to give them anything. If they were smart they would have just done exactly what the Republicans do ... just make a statement ... don't ask him any questions ... let him just sit there looking silly.
Bob Guthrie (Australia)
@IGUANA I disagree. The Dems got him to repeat the obstruction and look like a Mob foot soldier.
JW (New York)
@IGUANA Lewandowski kept saying he hadn't read the Mueller Report so he couldn't comment. That puts him in good company. Robert Mueller kept saying he hadn't read it either; and therefore, any hard question was "beyond his purview."
Blue in Green (Atlanta)
Corey, you are an errand boy sent by grocery clerks to collect a bill.
Carter (Century City)
If they are serious about these inquiries and serious about their Constitutional role to keep the other branches of government accountable, they must charge Lewandowski with contempt and force Trump to actually formally invoke Executive privilege when current and former executive office staff refuse to testify. And if they too refuse to answer the questions put before them by Congress, they must also be held in contempt. Else this is all a farce.
kathyinct (Fairfield County CT)
Trump cheered him on as Corey admitted he only tells the truth under oath. And if Trump has nothing to hide and has done nothing wrong . . . . Why does he so desperately try to muzzle all his former staff?
Gloria Ross (St. Louis)
I hadn't seen such a disrespectful and disgusting performance since Brett Kavanaugh. Since he was so contemptuous of Congress, Lewandowski should be immediately held in contempt - because he is contemptible - and jailed until he answers the questions he is asked. This has to stop.
Joe Miksis (San Francisco)
Lewandowski just oozed slime during his entire time before the committee. He was abetted by the GOP house members who turned this into a white nationalist farce. Corey showed he is areal Trump storm trooper. Hopefully, he will go to prison for a long time, for his treachery while serving as a loyal sycophant of the Trump crime family.
Joe (Jackson)
You'd have to go back to Wallace or Nixon's campaign to find the angry, violent, mean kind of ethos that Corey Lewandowski promotes. He is a bully and a horrible human being. I wish he would just disappear from public sight.
ZijaPulp (Vacationland)
What a despicable and juvenile performance. It’s too bad the Lewandowski can't be thrown in the hoosegow—it would wipe that smirk off his mug.
sal (nyc)
Not a Trump supporter but these politicians are pathetic. Unfortunately you can not trust the biased media or the politicians. Nadler is a confused clown, and the Democrats are reaching. Meanwhile the egotistical jerk will get reelected due to the lack of a competent replacement. But that's the way it is, and the way it will remain.
Suzanne (Rancho Bernardo, CA)
I cannot wait until the next Dem is elected, and then exerts the privileges that DJT has. It will be a quite a moment, to see remaining Repubs squirm and see their heads explode. Schadenfreude, I know, but it will be so earned and so delicious, if only the Dems could actually muster the abilities that they need to.
Allison (Texas)
Ugh. Lewandowski is so disrespectful of Congress. Who does he think he is?
Pat Boice (Idaho Falls, ID)
Watching a few minutes of the Lewandowski non-testimony, I was thoroughly disgusted with him. What a nasty fellow. Typical Trump ally. Comes across as really obnoxious. Lewandowski is pondering a Senate run in New Hampshire. Surely New Hampshire wouldn't elect this guy - would they?
Jeff M (NYC)
It's hard to decide which spectacle was more surreal, the execrable Corey Lewandowski lecturing Congress or Sean Spicer dancing in a green pirate shirt.
Nancie (San Diego)
I so look forward to the day that having this president cheering you on becomes your worst nightmare.
David Bible (Houston)
Hey! Republicans! Trump is a criminal. Trump is getting away with this criminality because of you. Republicans have given away any conceivable right to ever criticize anyone ever again.
SC (Boston)
"Corey Lewandowski confirmed Mr. Trump asked him to pressure the attorney general, but says the president never asked him to do anything illegal." I have news for Mr. Lewandowski, that is the definition of illegal. It is called obstruction of justice. Denying it doesn't make it go away. What a sorry bunch Trump has cobbled together. There is not a truthful, nor moral soul among them. I wonder how many of them will end up behind bars? I hope quite a few, starting with Trump himself.
SM (Olympia, WA)
There are already quite a few behind bars, but the GOP is conveniently ignoring that fact. What a record to run on, "yeah, the president hires a lot of criminals, but he hasn't done anything wrong". Right, you betcha. That's a winning hand.
Kaari (Madison WI)
There they go again: Lewandowski claiming Trump was "duly elected". No, Trump lost the election by 3 million votes and sneaked in through the outdated electoral college. Let's try to see he loses by a lot more in 2020.
Debra (Chicago)
There was a time that a President would not want to defy a subpoena. The appearance of wrongdoing would turn off the voters so fast - defying a subpoena would be a death knell. How did such a large group of voters lose the basic American values? There was a time when we would push out corrupt politicians. Now we think everyone is corrupt? We Americans have truly lost our way. We need to stop believing that business is King, key to prosperity, and smart. Business is engaging in deep corruption. They need to be brushed back.
Ed Robinson (South Jersey)
Just one more example of "the best people". To paraphrase James Carville, we could drag a $20 bill through a trailer park and find better people than those currently in this WH.
Blue in Green (Atlanta)
Lewandowski better see about treatment for the 3rd degree burns Burke laid on him. Corey looked like he was going to cry.
Merrill R. Frank (Jackson Heights NYC)
Note how he has little regard for any institution in the country, it’s just being subservient to his dear leader. You wonder what his civics and government classes were like or if he even valued them. Lewandowski is nothing more than the culmination of 40 odd years of ignorant entitled bro culture gleaned from Gordon Gekko, Alex P. Keaton to Art of the deal, talk radio and reality television.
ghm (Canandaigua, NY)
Thank you, NYT, for generating the most important headline! In a week, someone from New Hampshire ought to write an op-ed about the disrespectful, childish, ignorant bully who flipped off our Congress doing its job...and why his potential candidacy for anything. should be resisted until quashed.
Maxy (Teslaville)
There has been a fascist takeover of the White House by Trump inc. and unless our Congress can stop him we are doomed as a Democracy.
SM (Olympia, WA)
Who knew our democracy was so fragile in the first place?
KEM (Maine)
As a refresher course, and to enlighten myself concerning this administration, I re-read The Final Days by Woodward and Bernstein. Someone in 45's world learned the lesson well: Whereas witnesses to Nixon's conduct gave damning testimony during congressional hearings, 45 won't allow witnesses to testify, and if they do show up to not answer anything. The Nixon white house fought, but eventually supplied damning evidence when they were subpoenaed. 45's administration hasn't provided one shred of documentation to any subpoena. In Nixon's time, some republicans turned on him because he lied to them. 45 has his party so (inexplicably) cowed that his constant lying means nothing. Nixon resigned when he knew could no longer function properly as a Chief executive. 45 has never functioned properly.
Mr. Peabody (Georgia)
Traitor. I have no acceptable words for the contempt I have for he and the rest of the GOP.
Ian Robinson (London)
More and more and more one is left asking why hasn't this criminal been impeached. Sitting on Air Force 1 basically laughing publicly in the face of Congress while his capos give Congressmen the runaround on live TV. It's like the Mafia hearings in the 1960s. Except this time the Godfather they're all protecting is the President. How much more will it take before Congress acts?
Joseph (Murrysville pa)
@Ian Robinson kangaroo court jester Nader hates President Trump. Nader the Hut a light weight. Guaranteed House back to R
Michael (Seattle)
Wait, is this the same Mueller investigation that wasn’t permitted written responses to fundamental questions, let alone an interview with the Man Himself? An interview that Mueller considered “vital”? Oh, yes, that toothless farce.
fair (comment)
For as much pertinent information as Mr. Lewandowski conveyed today, he might as well have been a barnyard goose.
stefanie (santa fe nm)
We can only hope that the people in NH are smarter than to elect a dishonest, self serving minion of Trump to the US Senate.
Erich Richter (San Francisco CA)
Nadler is too weak to lead this. If Dearborn and Porter were subpoenaed and they didn't show up, especially due to Trumps illegal decree, why now at this late date did the Chairman NOT dispatch the Sergeant at Arms. Why are we still sitting on our most effective weapons in this fight? The whole thing is pathetic.
faivel1 (NY)
That was complete circus and the display of shameless cover up form the loyal gang supporter. What a pathetic display of lawlessness from this character, who acted like a thug and hooligan in front of all of us & the congress. But was it surprising...absolutely not. We been looking at his "best people" for quite awhile, they all the same with very few exceptions. Plenty of them are in a WH and ruining our country 24/7. Democrats managed to squeeze some admissions from him, but overall it was poorly executed, and not properly conducted. You'd expect with so many lawyers in congress to see much more skilled approach in Q & A part of the hearing. I hope they're much better prepare for the next round of hearings...democrats have to understand they are dealing with criminal street gang and they have to own the floor which they failed to do. They were reading for Lewandowski his answers from the report instead of making him read it out loud. Much more persuasive...don't you think.
Joseph (Murrysville pa)
@faivel1 Name what’s been ruined
John (Denver)
I'm dumbstruck at how our system allows liars and obstructionists to rule the day. So much for the rule of law in this country. Thank God I'll be dead before too long.
Bob Guthrie (Australia)
They are obstructing legitimate and lawful investigations into Obstruction. They are undermining the very foundations of government. This is the unspeakable hubris of the arrogant right. Sorry about the tautology. There are good conservatives of course. Trump brings out the worst in everybody. Thank the Lord that he does not have a pet dog. The extreme sense of entitlement of Trump and his junta of anti-democracy brigands is truly surreal. I watch Lewandowski for some time before realising that he has no right to wreck my day. It's day here.
Joe (Ohio)
The Republicans are the party of cartoonish buffoonery and they are handing the powers of government to the Democrats. This hearing brings us one step closer to that result. They are without pride or shame and they're going to get what they deserve.
ray (mullen)
I wonder if Trump will be the first U.S. president to leave the country (a la Guatemala, Peru, Philipines) ...) to avoid state prosecution once he's out of office...
Mary Harrington (Rhode Island)
@ray I certainly hope so!!! I wanted him to leave (to Russia with love), before he was elected..But here we are paying the price..How sad...
Alan (Queens)
Lewandowski was an openly defiant and cocky wise guy when democrats asked him questions. When republicans did he fed off of their conspiracy theories and visa versa. Never have I seen such disgusting “testimony”.
RickyDick (Montreal)
Sure sounds like contempt of Congress to me.
Blue in Green (Atlanta)
'I'm under no obligation to tell the truth on TV.' - Lewandowski
Candlewick (Ubiquitous Drive)
So, Mr. Lewandowski confirmed (confessed). And...nothing will happen.
Peter (Syracuse)
Mr. Lewindowski was successful in rebuffing questions from Democrats. He basked in the absurdity of the Republicans. But then he had to face Dem. staff counsel Berke, who ate him alive. He forced Corey to admit that Trump ordered him to talk to Sessions about firing Mueller by quoting Corey's book to him. Berke channeled his inner Sam Dash....and kicked it up a notch.
Joseph (Murrysville pa)
@Peter Yawn Nothing new
Mr. Bantree (USA)
At this point it's not even about Lewandowski or the White House stonewalling Congress anymore, it's about the complicity of the republicans in Congress themselves trying to stonewall the function of Congress. They are terrified of questions being answered by anyone. Similar to the Mueller testimony we witnessed before in Congress the republicans did not ask a single probative question of Lewandowski on the substance of the inquiry. They asked ridiculous questions like isn't it correct Mr. Lewandowski that you’ve previously commented that you thought the Mueller investigation was a witch hunt and an attempt to bring down Trump, do you still feel that way? And then thanked him for his response in the affirmative. If there was any doubt left that the integrity demonstrated by republicans in Congress during the Nixon era does not exist anymore, even at their own personal pain in acknowledging the corruption of one of their own, there should no longer be any doubt whatsoever that such courage is now firmly in the realm of myth.
Mark Tele (Cali)
Obstructing the hearing regarding obstruction of justice should land you behind bars. It's no surprise that this is what Lewandowski, Trump and the GOP would do. Cut to the main act.
Joseph (Murrysville pa)
@Mark Tele Still got nothing Lol
THW (VA)
“I didn’t think the president asked me to do anything illegal.” That is a curious choice of tense. Does Lewandowski now believe and recognize that the president did ask him to do something illegal?
William (Cape Breton)
Will the Republican Party in Congress ever return to Law and Order?
Bob (Boston)
@William Yes, read Articles 1, 2 and 3. Separation of powers. That's Order. Else the mob consumes itself.
Markymark (San Francisco)
If we're going to keep holding these kinds of meetings, democrats need to get much better at creating political 'theater'. There didn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to the questions they asked, and all seemed to be totally surprised and unprepared for Lewandowski's failure to cooperate. We need to play to win. Half measures just make everyone look bad.
Think (Wisconsin)
"This time, Mr. Trump criticized Mr. Sessions for recusing himself from overseeing the Russia investigation. He then dictated a message for Mr. Lewandowski to deliver to Mr. Sessions." . . . . . So Lewandowski receives a face-to-face order from the POTUS on a matter of supreme interest to Trump, who even dictates a specific message to be delivered to Sessions, and Lewandowski instead elects to ignore the order from Trump and instead just decides to go on a vacation? How is that scenario even remotely believable?
steve leone (south jersey)
during the hearing lewandowski stated live and on tv interviews where he thought anyone who tried to get a foreign government to interfere with our elections should spend the rest of his or her life in prison. later in the hearing it was pointed out how the president, before the election, tried to enlist russia's help in finding hillary clinton's missing emails. they were found, with russia's help? if so , when can we expect the president to start his sentence?
RH (San Diego)
No doubt many others share in my hopes that there will be substantial payback for those who continue to view the Constitution as a comic book type document. The Trump people who have and continue to abuse the power of their elected office will eventually hear and feel the long arm of American justice.
DGP (So Cal)
Mr. Lewandowski's abrasive and obdurate treatment of the House Committee is clearly a result of his belief that he can get away with virtually anything he wishes with no repercussions at all. Democrats are going to have to grow spines. Unless the House Committee holds him in contempt and locks him up somewhere together with a daily cumulative fine until he agrees to amicably answer all questions, the House is partially responsible. Immature, and irresponsible children will do whatever they can get away with and that thought obviously applies to the Trump Administration. With no negative fallout, they seem willing to continue to sneer at laws, adult behavior and the Constitution because they can get away with it.
Bob Guthrie (Australia)
@DGP All true. But IMHO they won't get away with it next year. There will be a cataclysmic landslide the likes of which the world- or to use a Trumpism- any world has ever seen. You guys did not get to the moon first by being stupid.
Christopher Foley (New Mexico)
“Mr. Trump’s attempt to fire Mr. Mueller came to light in news reports in January 2018. Mr. Trump repeatedly pushed Mr. McGahn to state that the president had not directed him to fire Mr. Mueller and to write a memo “for our records” denying the reports. Although Mr. Trump threatened to fire him if he did not comply, Mr. McGahn refused, saying the articles were accurate. “ Obstruction of Justice
Ambroisine (New York)
I suppose that Brett Kavanaugh has set the tone, at least for now. It your testosterone level is sufficiently revved, you can lie, sneer, and prove yourself a winner against all the tenets of reason and truth. It matters more, in our terrible reality TV-ingrained society, to "win,' which usually means employing dishonest tactics. I suppose human society has always been prey to this, but can there be any doubt that the dispersion of news through social media has aggravated the tendency? Good luck, us.
Rob (CA)
@Ambroisine The system broke when GOP voters began caring more about "winning" than honesty, integrity, or the well-being of the nation. The system of checks and balances has always relied on voters to reject people who sneer in the face of truth and flagrantly pretend like they have every right to break the law. There isn't any real enforcement mechanism in the house with teeth unless the judiciary steps up. The key check is that people would reject a party that so thoroughly rejected truth, reality, and oversight, and unfortunately, Fox News has convinced people that the democrats are the corrupt ones for following the widespread evidence of malfeasance by the Trump administration that continues to pile up daily.
François (France)
I've read a lot of democrats complain this hearing wasn't tough enough. I would say Nadler crossed the Rubicon, he is all-in with impeachment and that will likely drag the courts, and then the House, along.
Ross Stuart (NYC)
Mueller Report already covered this. Repeat repeat repeat again. Nothing new here except big waste of time. But that’s what Nader does.
Samuel (Los Angeles)
It’s the proper process. Nadler and others established the resistance. The guy is getting ready for a Senate run. Hope it hurts him
Barbara (D.C.)
@Ross Stuart Repeat until the whole country wakes up. As long as people defend the lying obstructor in the WH, repetition will be necessary.
Samuel (Los Angeles)
We know it’s obstruction of justice with every refusal to answer. We also know he’s got a PAC for a Senate campaign. Quid pro quo. He does what the Trump/ GOP want in not answering and they support their boy .
Donegal (out West)
I was disgusted at Lewandowski's sickening display before the House. Mr. Mueller was correct. This is the new normal. I recall the Watergate era quite well. And the outrage that the vast majority of Americans felt then cannot be overstated. After facts of Nixon's wrongdoing had come to light his support dropped to about 25%. And many Republicans believed that his conduct was such that he was no longer fit for office. Fast forward to today. Nixon's conduct pales in comparison to Trump's. And yet we sit quietly and accept Trump's felonies, his corruption, his lawlessness. Many Democrats urge the House not to impeachment, because of any number of fears that the action would "backfire" somehow, or that this would only embolden Trump's base. Anyone who relies on next year's election is naive in the extreme. Trump himself has said the only way he could "lose" in 2020 is if the election were "rigged." He will declare a "national emergency" based entirely on a fiction. And you can be sure that this Supreme Court will affirm Trump's claims of Executive Privilege. We now have our nation's first dictator. We saw that with the disdain Lewandowski expressed today at hearing. He knows that his former boss is untouchable. Treating Trump like just another dishonest politician will be our undoing. And he will do whatever it takes to hold power - literally anything. The mystery here isn't why hasn't the House moved more quickly. The mystery is - why are we still so silent?
Tim Berry (Mont Vernon, NH)
He's a disgrace to our state. I heard he was actually thrown out of a Town Meeting in his little town of Windham, NH.
karen (Florida)
Every day we discover the swamp is swampier than ever. Where does the Trump loyalty end and the patriotism begin?
Ralph Fenton (Virginia)
Nothing new was revealed in this hearing. A total waste of time and taxpayer money. If the Democrats want to impeach Trump, they should get on with it. These hearings are becoming an embarrassment and are not revealing any new information.
Maxy (Teslaville)
@Ralph Fenton Only because Trump operatives continue to obstruct justice. They are getting better at it every day.
JerseyFresh (New Jersey)
@Ralph Fenton: Oh no, no, no. A lot was revealed in today's hearing: just how contemptuous Trump, Lewandowski and the rest of the trumpsters (including Barr) are for the rule of law, and the rights and responsibilities of an equal branch of government. It's clear trump and his enablers hate democracy and representative government. God save us if trump is reelected.
A Good Lawyer (Silver Spring, MD)
@Ralph Fenton, perhaps you should read the article again.
Bubo (Virginia)
Well, there it is.
Michael (Seattle)
And it doesn’t mean or change a thing for our MAGA hat wearing friends.
Stevan Djordjevic (Arizona)
Let’s look at the logic. It is believed amongst those who surround Trump, that the President cannot do anything illegal, because of the fact that he is President. Therefore, “anything” the President asks you to do, is, by default “legal”, because the President asked you to do it. So far the Democrats have been doing more to prove that logic true, than false. It’s already overwhelmingly sad to have seen how far he’s been willing to test that monarchical premise. Let’s just hope we don’t lose our Republic in the process.
Greater Metropolitan Area (Just far enough from the big city)
@Stevan Djordjevic I remember the shock and disbelief when it was revealed that R.M. Nixon, who unlike DT had gone to law school, had said the same. Everything fell on his head like loose boxes from the top shelf at Home Depot. And now? It's just another meme.
Inkspot (Western Massachusetts)
"Well, when the president does it, that means that it is not illegal." -Richard Nixon
RealTRUTH (AR)
@Stevan Djordjevic It's all circular reasoning, beginning with a false assumption that the President is above the law. This will be settled in the SCOTUS and, I am sure, NOT in Trump's favor (except for his stooge Kavanaugh). Just ask any one from the Heritage Foundation if you want the worst read of our Constitution - an organization to which Kavanaugh holds allegiance.
Donald (Ft Lauderdale)
It is time to issue arrest warrants and hand cuffing people. All of these stooges are flight risk because of the Criminal Trump, therefore right to jail. Time to get Ivanka and Jr on the hot seat in nY on their financial fraud concerning the Soho Trump. LOCK THEM UP.
Mark (Port Townsend)
The corruption is making me wretch.
Jeffrey Stark (OR)
@Mark Retching might be less painful.
Horseshoe Crab (South Orleans, MA)
Like his idol, POTUS, Mr. Lewandowski is an arrogant, self-aggrandizing, shameless shill. To watch this farcical hearing is to see a colossal waste of time and money. This dope thinks his matinee performance will earn him a big place either in the Senate or perhaps in the White House itself. Don't kid yourself Corey- for Trump you are yesterday's news unless he has some garbage he needs handled by this " good soldier." Hopefully the proud people of New Hampshire will see you for what you are and elect someone with real experience and integrity. But you are certainly deserving of a special place in Trump's hall of sycophants, deviants and prevaricators.
stefanie (santa fe nm)
@Horseshoe Crab Prevaricators--you mean liars--say it loud and plain. Time to call these unethical people out.
RealTRUTH (AR)
@Horseshoe Crab Hmmm, Lewandowski, Cohen - how many more mobster fixers on Trump's payroll?
JRB (KCMO)
Another absolutely embarrassing democratic performance. Lewandowski is nothing more than a cheap political thug. And, nobody on the democratic side anticipated a stonewall? Don Don enjoyed the show...”thank you, Cory”. The Nadler gang is totally outmatched. Democrats want the truth and republicans want the power. Please, no more hearings. The only thing I hear is republicans eating your lunch. Pelosi is right. If we’re going to flush Trump, it will have to be the ballot that pulls the handle!
Tim Berry (Mont Vernon, NH)
@JRB No ! Nancy is not right. Democrats just need a real leader, nice guys (and ladies) finish last.
RealTRUTH (AR)
@JRB BUT we can call a Grand Jury and issue indictments against him, thus extending his liabilities past the normal expiry date. HE MUST BE TRIED AND CONVICTED = there is absolutely no doubt about his guilt.
Reader (There)
Since when is Corey L. an expert on what is and is not illegal? What's his take on Witness tampering? Obstruction of Justice or attempts thereof??? Since he apparently thinks it's perfectly ok to physically attack other human beings who happen to disagree with you and to harass (or worse) valid professional journalists, I wouldn't trust his opinion on legality.
RealTRUTH (AR)
@Reader Lewandowski once walked into a State government meeting, if I am correct, with a gun in a paper bag. Look it up on Wikipedia. His past is, to say the least, unstable and criminal.
Writing prof (NC)
Things didn’t go well for Caesar in the end, and he was actually embraced by the people.

No surprises. The coverup continues. Republicans attack the rule of law. Lewandowski shines with sheer hatred. Trump's cult of personality was on full display. I can't decide whether the best model for analysis of the Trump operation is the Mafia or the Soviet Politburo in 1953. The underlying problem is that both of those choices imply terrible consequences for our country.
RealTRUTH (AR)
@thomas briggs If his lips ere any more pursed with hatred and anger, his face would have imploded. Shades of Kavanaugh, really!
Lynne (Ithaca, NY)
I can't help but place this obscene performance of disdain for our government and it's checks and balances next to the respectful and thorough 11 hour testimoney of Sec. Clinton at the Benghazi hearing (which was investigated a total of 10 times). There is much more to support further investigation in the Mueller Report than ever was in the Republican's partisan pursuit of HRC. Yet she showed her love of our country and its Congress by her forthright behavior. The bratty bad boy stuff is not only tiresome, but makes it clear that the Trump cabal has no respect for the country and is here to cash in and push a pie in all of our faces while they do.
JK (Central Florida)
@Lynne Wish I could recommend this 100 times. Great insight. Hard to understand continual support for these liars/grifters/treasonous democracy haters.
Shawn (Atlanta)
The Democrats need to come up with a better response to ludicrous claims of privilege than just moving on to the next question. They need to take contempt votes, and send the sergeant-at-arms to arrest recalcitrant witnesses. Or bring civil suits against the likes of Lewandowski. His claim of privilege is so comically inept and bad-faith, a judge could quickly conclude that compliance with questioning is necessary, and that judge could use their contempt powers to enforce the judgment with fines and imprisonment. All this is within the House's powers, and would call the bluff of witnesses citing phony privilege. It was done to help investigate the Teapot Dome, and the current scandals make the Teapot Dome scandal look like child's play.
steve w (austin tx)
I saw a bit of the hearing live and Corey is just as argumentative now as he was at the moment Trump fired him before hiring Manafort (DJT only hires the best!) It is my opinion that team Trump will continue to bully until Nadler develops a spine. If a few were found in contempt of congress and immediately sent to a holding cell behavior might improve. Until convicted, DJT has no ability to pardon so scufflows can cool their heels in the clink for a couple of months while dragging it out in the courts.
Writing prof (NC)
My biggest fear is that Trump knows he’s circling the drain and will act desperately in the General. A cornered animal is a viscous animal.
Shawn (Atlanta)
@Writing prof I don't think you meant to say "viscous". The word you were looking for is "unctious".
Trumpy McTrumpface (Los Angeles)
@Shawn I thought he was going for "vicious" and got bitten by autocorrect. But the name "Writing Prof" did make that funny. :D
Jeff M (NYC)
A predictable performance by Mr. Lieandowkski.
SR (Bronx, NY)
Thanks for getting his name right! ;)

If the Trump presidential disaster ever ends (and there is increasing uncertainty whether the Trumpistic GOP has permanently damaged the U.S. Government), the Congress needs to claw back the powers that it has ceded to the White House over decades and during presidencies of both political parties. Trump has demonstrated without any doubt that once a mentally and morally unfit individual becomes President of the United States the 25th Amendment is no protection against the abuse of power as long as his or her party controls at least one of the chambers of Congress. Trump has repeatedly engaged in obstruction of justice by firing Comey and by instructing Lewandowski to tell Sessions to resign. He has done virtually nothing to protect the American electoral system from foreign interference. He has engaged in corruption by not putting his investments in blind trusts and by openly encouraging American politicians and foreign agents to stay at his hotels and golf resorts. He has all this with complete impunity because the Senate of the United States is controlled by the Trump party (formerly Republican).
Lil50 (nola)
I had been waffling over whether impeachment should move forward. After watching the obstruction just today, I'm absolutely certain he needs to be impeached. The lying is shocking. A reminder that Bill Clinton wasn't impeached because of his act in the Oval Office, but LYING about it. It seems almost quaint now. The GOP has ZERO moral high ground anymore.
Ann (Louisiana)
@Lil50, in the same vein, it was the lies that brought down Nixon. People, and politicians, never learn.
Kelly Campbell (Long Island, NY)
@Lil50 Did the @GOP ever really have the moral higher ground, though?
Ricardo (Nuremberg, Germany)
I hope the Democrats have some game plan that is invisible to the rest of us. It was clear early on that this would be Lewandowski's opportunity to defy, mock, and obstruct the investigation, to the glee of Trump and his cronies. And that is precisely what happened. So, Dems, what's the plan?
Ambroisine (New York)
@Ricardo Ricardo, by admitting that Lewandowski visibly defied, mocked, and obstructed, you are building the case against him. Our standard cannot be that the criminal wins.
Michael Tyndall (SF)
Corey Lewandowski showed contempt for Congress today, at one point calling Representative Eric Swalwell, ‘President Swalwell.’ That’s technically just an insult, probably deserving nothing more than a punch in the nose if playground rules applied. More seriously, he also asserted executive privilege in limiting his remarks only to findings in the Mueller Report, even though he never served in the administration. It’s a totally bogus assertion, laughable on its face. On this matter it’s high time for House Democrats to play hardball. Cite Corey for contempt under its inherent contempt power, then detain him and add a daily fine of $20,000 dollars per day. Then Corey can go to court for relief, instead of making the Democrats do it.
Wondering (NY, NY)
@Michael Tyndall Or Corey pleads the 5th and this goes away.....
Sic Semper Tyrannis (Georgia)
@Michael Tyndall Alas, at this point, playground rules actually apply.
Moe-Larry-Cheese (Washington DC)
Agree. No more soft pitches. Hardball time including jail.
TFPLD (Pittsburgh)
I do hope one day that the club of Trump will open their eyes. A cult leader is never good for anyone. It is absolutely terrible that Mr. Lewandowski would be so shameless and combative when he had to be honest in front of Federal officials like the FBI. So he forgot his bearings and decides to be a jerk. There will be a reckoning one day. At the end of that reckoning will be jail time for a few individuals. One may be you Corey.
Viv (.)
@TFPLD Funny, when McCabe and Comey were combative under a similar scenario, that was lauded as exemplary. No matter how you slice it, asking someone to do something and then abandoning the notion is not illegal. Had the Clinton campaign not received blanket immunity, do you seriously believe that their testimony would be different? Do you honestly think they didn't receive orders to refuse cooperation with the FBI (unless blanket immunity was granted) and not hand them over their server, the one key piece of evidence in their hack allegation? Do you not wonder why immunity was granted, when it turned out that nobody did anything wrong? Why request something so superfluous?
CM (Maple Bay, CA)
@Viv Please see Lynne's comment above on Clinton's Benghazi hearing to know what Democrats would and have done in these kinds of situations. You are wrong. Respect for our countries institutions and democratic processes is what you would have gotten.
Kelly Campbell (Long Island, NY)
@Viv The Clinton campaign received "blanket immunity" for what exactly?
todd scott (owensboro ky)
A big waste of time.Leave Trump alone ,he is the best thing that has happened in decades !
Alicia ogawa (Nyc)
@todd scott That's certainly the way Vlad feels about it!
Colette Crosby (Seattle)
Hello! Why do you say trump is the best thing? I’m not a fan but have been humbly curious how his supporters feel they or the country have benefited. Thank you in advance for your reply.
TFPLD (Pittsburgh)
@todd scott, In your eyes he is "the best thing" but there is an overwhelming majority that disagrees with you. It is America after all and he played the electoral college the way he needed to. But please remember that he lost the popular vote by almost 3 million votes. He divides the country on an hourly basis. So when you leave the comment you leave just beware that many will disagree with you. I am one of those and a proud American.
Ann (Louisiana)
Wouldn’t Incitement to Commit Murder be a crime, even if the person so incited decided to go on a beach vacation with their kids instead of committing the murder? Just because “Corey” decided to go on vacation instead of carrying out Trump’s directives doesn’t mean a crime wasn’t committed...at least by Trump.
Steven of the Rockies (Colorado)
It has been heartbreaking to watch an individual like Mr. Lewandowski struggle to answer questions from sane adults, on the Democratic side of the aisle. The fellow is not quite all there.
Pepe (A Coruña, Spain)
@Steven of the Rockies The problem is, Mr. Lewandowski is a loyalist. He probably doesn't have the finances to block subpoenas, and remember, he was fired by Trump, so he knows Trump isn't going to help him out...but they are al auditioning at the court of one. Their thinking is if they do well on tv, they might get a lucrative job with the President.
SCW (CT)
@Steven of the Rockies It was his intention to use this committee by ONLY creating and avoiding sound bites. He would not read aloud his own statements documented in the Mueller Report because they could be used against him in a political race in audio-video messaging. It doesn't matter that his statements are already a matter of (printed) record because too many of us don't read newspapers, anymore. There's an election coming and he now knows how campaigns (and the media) are managed.
jaded (middle of nowhere)
@Pepe, I don't believe there's anything about Corey Lewandowski that's loyal. He is, however, a self-serving opportunist, among other things, who's hoping that this publicity will bolster his chances of winning his senate race. Unfortunately, he's made few friends in New Hampshire, especially after filling a $5 million lawsuit against his neighbors in Windham, NH, https://www.derrynews.com/news/windham/corey-lewandowski-neighbor-dispute-continues/article_ff71e098-9de6-57a3-8fd9-0a89f6f18223.html. The guy's no more than a bully and a thug.
