I'm not gay and my aesthetic is completely different, but McGough and McDermott have always been on my list of art heroes. Their work exemplifies courage, independence and the very best of the American imagination.
I recall a great story about them cooking stews in the fireplace of their pad in the village, I hope that's factual... 'cause talk about living your art!
Besides their work, what I admire is their refusal to participate in what sucks in contemporary American life. The only other pair like them were Jess and Robert Duncan.
Thanks guys for keeping it unreal and weird.

Mocked for wearing a painters smock?
I'd wear one too if I had such lovely clothes. What a weird complaint...

Thanks goodness for the bon vivant.

As a traditional illustrator utilizing old world tools, materials and aesthetic, I adore McDermott and McGough. Thank you, infinitely, for this interview!

I have never forgotten reading a terrific conversation in Interview magazine with McDermott & McGough about 40 years ago. I thought they were fabulous. They mentioned they were very taken by a slim book titled The Game of Life and How to Play It. I quickly purchased a copy and continue to turn to it myself over the years. Thanks for letting us know how they are faring and that they remain dedicated to living in art.

Cheers. Thanks for the interview. Wish I could spring for one of McGough's works.
