Small donors are flocking to President Trump since he represents their feelings completely and articulates their frustrations loudly in the national stage. Trump’s tweet about the four immature, ignorant and irrelevant congresswoman is something I would love to have made but if I do it, it might not have the same impact or relevance. Thank you, President Trump. Your support is growing.

I am sorry but I cannot trust anything Trump has to say. That means that I cannot trust any report of campaign money he collected either. Until there is a complete investigation of this current campaign, I don't believe a word. Why should anyone believe in reports by Republicans about how much they collected? He has continuously lied about everything even when he did not need to. Such lies are also coming from Barr and most Republican Senators.

Well, in true con man tradition trump CONtinues to fleece the fools whom he (in actuality, in private) disdains and demeans. Yet they still throw money at the racist cynical corrupt disgrace known as Donald trump. Watch how the trump crime family eventually winds up profiting and pocketing as much as they can get away with from campaign funds. Trump is ONLY interested in his personal gain, enjoying the trappings of presidential power (with none of the true requirements of the job), and how much news media and social media interest he can generate-- by saying virtually anything... mainly LIES. It will be far too late (since much damage is already done by trump and his republican enablers in power), but eventually the truth WILL come out. Trump and his followers and enablers will be recorded in history much like another liar, bigot, and corrupt conman, Joseph McCarthy. And never forget that McCarthy's legal henchman was the mentor of young Donald trump, this being Roy Cohn. Look them up. Read all about it.

Trump will probably use the money from small donors to put together a shell company and hide some of the money offshore where his family can use it at a later date.

As a 78 year old white Moderate who has supported both parties at different times, it is depressing to learn that the country I thought modeled tolerance and diversity is filled with large numbers of people who have to hate to feel good about themselves, which is what racism and bigotry is all about.

Given that Trump has never stopped campaigning, I am not sure why it is surprising he has amassed significant sums of money for re-election or why his base would not continue to support him. That said, unless he is prepared to pay me multiple millions for my vote, the likelihood of my voting for an individual with Trump’s proclivities, absence of character, and absence of competence is nonexistent. Or to put it another way, you can have all the money in the world but you will never be able to buy enough lipstick to hide this pig.

This campaign for low dollar contributions is stoking his deplorable's to maintain interest. The real money comes from the usual suspects.
Wanda (Merrick,NY)
I think that the news that the Commander in Chief has increased his small donor contributions is the most dismal, upsetting news of this day. It trump’s citing his unabashed hate mongering speech, as the thing for all of us who want him gone, to fear the most.

These people voluntarily hand over what little money they have to Donald Trump, and they whine incessantly that they’re financially unsuccessful but it’s all someone else’s fault. There’s a great quote in the new Tim Alberta book about how Trump mocks and insults the evangelicals who support him, for being rubes. No doubt he says the same about the little people from whom he cons his donations.
Deirdre (New Jersey)
All of the Trump voters I know despise paying any taxes but they love their Medicare, military and demand their roads paved and plowed ASAP. Trump has conned them into donating to his campaign or buying his Chinese made propaganda while spending their hard earned tax dollars at his private golf clubs and taking his whole family on tax payer paid vacations while they pretend to be Camelot. American ignorance is astounding

Your headline, "Trump Campaign Invests Big in Small Donors, and Reaps Rewards," made me think, 1. We may never see his or 'its' tax returns, but I'm sure that trump himself and trump org. -- on 'net valuation' of each -- would 'qualify' as "small donors." 2. I am surer still that trump -- 'for' himself, and 'as' trump-for-trump org. -- would not 'anywise' donate a dime from his own pocket or its, even for 'this' (and while his con is working so well on 'third parties'). 3. I am surest of all that some not-insignificant 'slice' of donations made by third parties to trump's disreputable -- donations made by third-party donors, big and small 'alike' -- will wind up (whether 'upon' a win or a loss in 2020) in one personal 'trump pocket' or another.
Thomas Murray (NYC)
@Thomas Murray … "cause," that is … "disreputable cause." Pardon my word elision. (Might the omission of a single syllable 'still make' an elision even though the omitted syllable be a word 'itself'?)
Nb (Texas)
I don't think a $360,000 donation from a millionaire is a small donor donation.
WJ (New York)
In 2016 I thought trump said he would self- finance his campaign with some of his 10 billion dollars What happened to that?
SJP (Europe)
There is a technique in smuggling called smurfing. It involves lots of small donations to disguise one big contributor. How can we be sure this is not the case here? How to be sure this is not foreign money?
Andrea R (USA)
Here’s how it works... Trump destroys the middle class by giving huge tax cuts to the wealthiest, who in return donate huge amounts via various channels. How do we get this scourge out of office? Remember that a majority of Americans do not like his actions or words. Help get the vote out starting early! Support senators who disagree with Donald’s cruelty. Vote yourself! We’re all exhausted, but compassion must win, so bolster your energy and keep standing up for what’s right.
Paul Torcello (Melbourne, Australia)
Well, Trump has proven that in America there is indeed a sucker born every minute.
Gordon Jones (California)
@Paul Torcello Think this is true for some of our older generations. Not true for our younger generations. Now, if we could just see a buyout of FOX News by a legitimate journalistic company.
Rene Roger Tissot (Canada)
Sadly this means lots of people endorse the politics of racism...
JRB (KCMO)
Much like a phony televangelist...with the same results!

I’d be interested in whether the $744,000 in hats were manufactured by US workers or not.
gary wilson (austin, tx)
@ScottC A Dec 18 Article https://qz.com/1483890/how-many-donald-trump-products-are-made-in-the-usa/ indicates 85% of the merch is made outside of the USA.
Allan (Rydberg)
Perhaps it is the Progressives that are being manipulated to hold such extremists views that your average citizen becomes outraged at being called a deplorable, or seeing the Pledge of Allegiance removed from schools, or many other attitudes that distance the average person from the so called progressives. We really need to learn to talk to each other and look for common ground.
Neil (Texas)
I am glad POTUS has embraced the fact that Democrats are big on talking the talk of not accepting money but actually they actively seek it. The Democrats are the gendarme in Casablanca. Mr. McCain foolishly stayed stuck with his own law of McCain Feingold and got whipped by Obama not just at polls but in raising money. Romney similarly got scared of being labeled the candidate of the rich as he himself is wealthy and let Obama out raise him. And remember the 44th could not bad mouth Citizens United. 2020 election is going to be a fight in which we Republicans should use all arrows in our quiver including the large donor base - not to mention traditional big money Republican donors. If POTUS is to lose in 2020 - and I seriously doubt it - let him lose but not because we did not match Democrats dollar for dollar.
Gordon Jones (California)
@Neil This time around that is not going to happen. We will have a new President. We will have majorities in the House and Senate. We will then be able to address the fully anticipated adverse consequences of the Citizens United court ruling. Corporations are not people. People are not immortal - they do die. Corporations are created to be immortal - they do not die.
AACNY (New York)
Small donors used be of sign of a candidate's strength, but the NYT now makes it about something else (ex., spending big). Trump has strong support. Despite this incessant negative spin by the media or, perhaps, because of it.
A.B (USA)
Trump has so much support from many regular Americans. Are some bigoted in some ways? sure. But I think most were just fed up and wanted change. He continues to deliver. For example changing the old asylum rules that many felt were being abused but that neither party wanted to address. I think Democrats need to stop ignoring what's right in front of them and speak to issues that many Americans feel are important. They should also be careful to not go too far to the left.
Demosthenes (Chicago)
No one is better at grifting than Trump. It’s no surprise he’s expert at taking money from the incurious rubes who back him. Undoubtedly much of the lucre wink find its way in Trump’s pocket via his various businesses where he overcharges for “political” events. When it’s all said and done, history will grant one outstanding trait to Trump. He’s the most successful con man in American history. Even Bernie Madoff stands in awe of him.
AutumnLeaf (Manhattan)
That much from small donors. Sounds like he is quite popular with regular folk, despite the media trying to deny it. And he out raised the most profitable Democrat by almost 4 times the amount? Sounds like this race is about wrapped up. Landslide reelection in 2020.
JD (Bellingham)
@AutumnLeaf you do realize that there are 20+democratic candidates and they are all going after campaign donations. If you think about it you might find that there’s still a good bit of time until the general election and when it’s down to just two front runners then you can compare donations. I’m sure that there are numerous people like me who are going to wait and see who’s still standing after a primary or two
Corbin (Minneapolis)
@Autumleaf Regular folks with $360,000 to spare!
Mexican Gray Wolf (East Valley)
If Trump’s good at anything, it’s conning financially unsuccessful rubes out of their cash. But really, what is it with the “landslide” routine by supporters of a candidate who set a record for a popular vote loss margin, and still was handed the job like a participation trophy, and has never once had majority support? Look, we get it: the red-hats and Charlottesville marchers love the guy, But isn’t endzone dancing about a second term during this idiot bigot’s failed first term just a little premature?
Bohemian Sarah (Footloose In Eastern Europe)
I wouldn't take these campaign reports at face value. There is plenty of very dark money and overseas influence behind Trump, and I wouldn't put it past them to have figured out how to spoof the small, untraceable individual contribution. In fact, it's probably easier, technologically speaking, to give a candidate a million bucks in small bot contributions than in dark money. We know that a huge percentage of his online supporters were in fact bots. This is something that needs to be researched in-depth.
humble (USA)
This election pits evil against good. Unfortunately, there does not appear to be a democratic solution to dismiss this tyranny.
AACNY (New York)
@humble Consider that this election may actually be about people with your views vs. the rest of us. People with your views have never accepted the outcome of the last election. They have repeatedly demeaned Americans for supporting this president. They have perched themselves atop moral high ground and brook no dissent. They consider everyone else "evil. Americans probably donate to Trump every time a progressives openly denigrates them and/or their values. No wonder he has so many small donors.
Gordon Jones (California)
@AACNY Time to get "the rest of us" together for Pizza and a strategy session. Two medium sized pizzas should be more than adequate. No anchovy, extra cheese.
CNNNNC (CT)
'35 percent came from small donors, defined as those who gave $200 or less' I believe they call that 'grass roots' Why are Democrats not competing well with small donors on a percentage basis? The last time this report was released, 45% of Trump's small donors were women. Only the female Democratic candidates achieved a similar distribution. Think about that.
Tom Miller (Oakland)
The big donors are in to protect their wealth and the small donations from those Lincoln said could be fooled "all of the time".
