A cookie unforgettably memorialised as the ideal accompaniment to a choral hydrate high in the first chapter of Irving Rosenthal’s 1967 beat novel Sheeper.

Cheryl is correct. Black & Whites were known as Half Moon Cookies upstate. For decades, my family enjoyed Half Moon Cookies from the Rose Bakery in Auburn, NY but with one major difference - the cookie was a delicious chocolate. Looking forward to trying this recipe.

It's so dang hot and humid where I live, if I baked these delicious gems, they would be so rubbery from the humidity, they could practically bounce off the kitchen counter. This is definitely an autumn bake item. But I have had these in the past and they are fantastic. Actually, I love any kind of plain, tender cookie with a vanilla icing/glaze all over it. It's better than cake and goes extremely well with a nice cup of hot coffee in the AM or a chilled glass of lemonade in the afternoon. YUM and then some!!! And thanks for the video!!!!

A perfect recipe. . . behind another paywall. I found a similar recipe on an epicurean website that worked great (minus the lemon).

The paywall is less than $4 per month. Well worth it. Newspapers are under continuous financial pressure and need every source of revenue. If we all contribute a little then we all get a lot more in return

Great video!!! I'm only surprised that the (amazing) Melissa Clark didn't point out that technically they are 'drop cakes' rather than cookies I have been eating black and whites for seven decades. My grandmother carried them in her appetizing store in Inwood. Having lived on the UES near Greenberg's I am partial to theirs. I especially like when they do blue and whites for Chanukah or pink and whites for Valentine's. Why? I much, much prefer the white to the chocolate. I also order vanilla egg creams. But living in Vermont, black and whites are scarce. That is until my wife found them at Hannaford's, a New England supermarket a few weeks ago. I have to say, they rival most anything I have tasted in the city. Great cake, great icing, even if they cheat and do the whole cake white and then add the chocolate. PB

Black and Whites were Half Moons in central NYS - - and I really do hope this recipe is good, because not a one I have ever purchased as a grown up was worth the frosting! Los Espookys IS OTOH, deliciously weird TV.

@cheryl, Black and Whites really aren't the same as Half Moons. Half Moons tend to be bigger and cakier and the cake is ALWAYS chocolate. Half Moons should also have frosting, not icing (it shouldn't be shiny). You can order them on-line from Hemstrought's bakery in Utica.

Yes! Hemstrought’s Half Moons are the best! Chocolate cake is the way to go...
