A thousand years shall pass and the guilt of Germany will not be erased.

Thank you for this remarkable piece about a remarkable woman. While I'm quite familiar with German history, I had never heard of Else Ury or these books. It always amazes me when I read of Jewish people like Ury, or Otto Frank, who served the Germany of the Kaiser, yet who were reviled and murdered by the Germany of Hitler.

Yes, I too thank you for these obituaries. I remain somewhat confused about her creating a book with "Hitler as a hero".. ."appeasing the Nazis," etc.etc. It seems so unlikely that she would do this other than as a curtained anti-Hitler expression. Are these statements accurate and based on her actual writing? I am not in anyway familiar with her books. Am I missing or misunderstanding something in this obituary?

What an eloquent example of the absurdity and needless cruelty of racism and misguided effort to "purify " a group. She was surely a better "German" than her murderers.

Thank you for remembering Else Ury.
For anyone interested,I would recommend
reading Victor Klemperer’s Diaries,
I Will Bear Witness (2 volumes)
to gain an understanding of the life of
German Jews who remained in Germany
until the bitter end.

In Berlin those that died in concentration camps are referred to as murdered, not perished or killed. A much more graphic and harsh term. We should all follow their example.

Thank you, NYTimes, for remembering all these remarkable human beings. "Overlooked" and Else Ury's obituary reminds us to live well, in honouring those who have gone before, especially those who perished via "Kiddush Ha-Shem" - magnifying and sanctifying The One, murdered simply for daring to exist. May their memory inspire us to perform deeds of lovingkindness.

@Sherry
I was going to write a comment, but then saw yours. You said exactly what I thought needed to be said, only a lot better than I could have. Thank you so much.
