To me, there is something about this hardware parade that is instilling fear. I see it as an outward projection of domination and intimidation to the rest of the country and the world. That's not how I grew up understanding our freedom and democracy. People fought for this democracy and died for it. They laid this groundwork so we could live in freedom and peace. That is what is attractive about the US. People could feel comfortable to come here and better themselves, not alone the people already established here. This intimidation is giving a message of dominance throughout the world; a fear to everybody outside of the US, like a takeover. IDK, it just reminds me of the parades with Hitler during the days leading up to WWII. It's just not how I perceived the US. Basically, intimidation puts people on guard and triggers a lot of negativity.

Should be required reading for all Americans and it is as relevant today as it was when it was written in 1852. So instead of the slave, I would substitute in Douglass's words the imprisoned "illegal alien." Quite frankly as a taxpayer I'm the one paying for these tanks, yet I never get to see them. I want to see a tank my taxes created, and I'm fine if some of my taxes go to showing me that tank.

We spent a week in Berlin before traveling up the Rhine, and the Germans, who are remarkably honest about their country’s sins, are disgusted and upset by President Trump’s behavior. Their parents and grandparents know how these things end.

In early 2017 I posted a comment that Trump would be our first dictator, that he would not answer to Congress or our Supreme Court, and that by the end of his first term there would be internment camps on our soil. Well, I've been right.
But at the time I posted my comment, even those on the Left told me that my claims were ridiculous. That none of this would ever happen in our country. That our Constitution, or our system of checks and balances would limit the damage Trump could cause. I was just being overly paranoid.
Fast forward to today. Trump has said that he will not follow a Supreme Court ruling under any circumstances. And now he has ordered tanks rolling down the streets of Washington DC for a 4th of July "ceremony" so disgusting his own military is against it. And they will not cross him. There are tens of millions of Trump voters whose worship of him is something that Adolf Hitler would have envied.
Don't get me wrong. It hurts to see my native country descend into a dictatorship. My brother is a disabled Viet Nam war veteran. Four of my uncles served in WWII.
But my inlaws are Holocaust survivors. My ancestors survived the Armenian Genocide. My family knew exactly what we were seeing when Trump took office. We now have a home outside the country.
And my only question to all of you now, who had hoped beyond all hope, is: why didn't you listen to me and others who tried to warn you? Or were you all too busy chuckling over columns such as Ms. Collins'?

First, what specifically makes this July 4 celebration so exceptional that it must be military-themed, and not all the others?

As a matter of fact, our WW2 tank, the Sherman, was a lousy tank, greatly inferior to German and Russian main battle tanks. It’s armor was inadequate and it’s main gun was weak. It had a tendency to burst into flames when struck by enemy fire. The Brits referred to as the “Tommy Cooker” and the “Ronson”, a popular cigarette lighter of the era, whose slogan was “lights first time, every time”.

I just finished reading "My War" by Andy Rooney and think it should be required reading for all high schools. He mentions that in his experience as a reporter for Stars and Stripes during WWII he came to believe that tanks are probably the most inefficient war weapon ever invented, more dangerous to its operators than to the enemy. There's something kind of poignant about Trump's fascination with such a stupid weapon.

Trump is undoubtedly in the pantheon of worst presidents. Buchanan has to be #1 because his awfulness helped precipitate the Civil War. But after that, it’s a tossup for number two: is it Trump or Andrew Johnson? Gosh they are both so similar. Venal, racist, irritable, fueled by personal animosity, given to embarrassing and frequent public displays of their rotten character. I have to give it to Johnson, which leaves Trump at #3 with a bullet (though time remains in his presidency for him to do something of such colossal stupidity and destructiveness that he has hope of vaulting up a spot or two).
Also, I wouldn’t be so sure that because we survived Watergate we can survive anything. We are in the middle of an administration so manifestly unethical and amoral (if not outright corrupt and illegal) and yet our elected officials somehow cannot muster enough courage to call it out, much less take action against it. As for the public, well my God Trump is running again and will get tens of millions of votes even if he loses. It remains to be seen that we will “survive” it.

Up here in Canada, we celebrate July 1st as "Canada Day".
We eat toop much at picnic meals, drink too much wine and beer, watch fireworks, and, in Edmonton, prepare more than 100 pavilions for our annual August Heritage Days festival. One pavilion for each country we used to call home, or our families did.

It prevents the sort of hijacking by a minority of a minority that got us Donald Trump, and various mini-Trumps around the country. It would give 3rd and 4th parties & independents more of a shot. my 'fellow' citizens who voted for him three years ago and will most likely vote for him again next year, will be celebrating the birthday of our freedoms, in our nation's capital, surrounded by humongous vehicles of war trucked in just for this occasion. All of this at our expense. All of this for the vain benefit of just one man who holds himself above our laws. The Republicans are giving away free tickets to the faithful.
Meanwhile, down at the border, little children torn from their parents are drawing in stark black ink the cages in which they exist without proper food, healthcare and safety.
While none of this funny, perhaps it's a form of gallows humor that

What we need are a few heroes to stand in the way of the tanks like the heroes in Beijing did.
For better or worse, we don't need to celebrate our military power or "American resolve".
We kicked the British out in our revolution. We beat the British again with unfortunate the burning of the White House and the Capitol Building, in the war of 1812.We tricked Mexico into a war in 1846 and beat them, good practice one might say for the horrors of the Civil War soon to follow, 1861 to 1865, 600,000 plus citizens dead, a good portion of the south set to flame by Gen. Sherman. Oh well. They still hold it against "the north" but those in the southern states who held slaves, the minority, insisted on war.
We helped Europe finally get out of the mud and blood soaked killing fields of WWI, we helped the British win in WWII. This led to Korea, which sent us in the direction of Vietnam. We beat Saddam twice, first under George H.W. Bush and then, finally, under G.W., the son. We chased the Taliban around, and some of them out, of Afghanistan.
And all those little wars: Spanish-American, the invasion of Grenada, invasion of Haiti (often), invasion of the Dominican Republic, take over of Panama so we could build a canal and later turn it over to the nation we midwifed. Of course, don't forget "the shores of Tripoli", the Clinton bombing of Bosnia, Somalia, Lebanon under Reagan, Nicaragua under Reagan, the invasion of Panama under George H.W. Bush. The A-bomb over Japan and fire bombing over Germany. It is exhausting just making this list and I've only hit the high points.

Trump officially turns the United States of America into a "Banana Republic" replete with all of the trappings and pomp worthy of his magnificence. I won't be watching the spectacle, but find myself wondering if Mr. Trump will be unveiling his new, gold encrusted, bemedalled, official CIC uniform complete with solid gold swagger stick. Waiting for the pictures of a cute, couture uniform clad Ivanka standing Zelig-like nearby.
The Media will never give up on criticizing Trump, but I am yet to believe that Hilary would have been a better choice. And now with the clowns that are running on giving free stuff to anyone that can vote and a whole bunch that can't, Trump still sounds like a much better choice, much better!!

1. I thought our military was stretched to the limit and needed more money and resources? Where are they finding the time and money to haul equipment and troops in for a Trump campaign commercial? Hmmm, makes me think they weren't telling the truth about their budget needs.
2. While the Scammander-in-Chief gets to show off his toys on TV, Russia, China and North Korea will be using cyber attacks to test how they can take out various systems. Seems the Scammander was right...the world is laughing at us.
We have about 2 dozen chicken wings salt and peppered, trimmed of the tip, web, and fat near the armpit (or is that wingpit) marinating overnight in light and dark soy sauce, garlic, ginger, and scallions ready to hit the grill some time today.

There were those who had a dim view of the use of force to gain independence from Britain. In fact, many did not want to gain such independence. Britain was a great nation and we should be grateful to be one of their colonies. We were British citizens; not war-hungry radicals.
But the classic liberals had a dream of a republic where people elected their representatives and president. The dream was a rule of law rather than the declarations of a king. It was a dream of diverse interests being protected while still coming together as a nation. It was a dream of unlimited opportunity and limited government. It was a dream that people were willing to fight for and, if necessary, die for. It was a dream born in war and nurtured by military strength.
And now some people are questioning if symbols of that strength and resolve should have a place in the celebration of our independence. Why can't we just be absorbed into a grand, global nation led by a strong, guiding global government? What makes us any better than Sudan or China or Russia or Korea? We should celebrate all their values, too.
Besides, our flag is offensive to many Americans now. It represents the dream of the past, not our global future. If we didn't have tanks or other weapons, we could be part of a vast, peaceful, world community.

No historian here, but if Buchanan delivered amplified racism and the Civil War, then we didn't truly survive him, given that these calamities are destroying us now. I'm glad Gail Collins is feeling cheerful, but I don't feel any certainty that the country will turn around in my own lifetime. I'm also not optimistic about an even remotely fair election taking place next year. When we add climate change into the mix of problems, that takes us beyond crises of the past. I believe in being active rather than despairing, but I don't think denial will help us.

Collins shouldn't be so sensitive about the friendly appearance of tanks on the streets of Washington. Think of what the poor Iraqis suffered at the hands of US tanks performing a deadly task totally related "to their actual function." Much better that the US keep its deadly hardware at home.

My father, having gone to dental school on the GI bill, was called back during the Korean war and elected to stay in the Air Force. One of his not-good moments was getting the dental clinic staff to march in a Fourth of July parade in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Fourth was not much of a thing in San Juan; St. John's day (the Baptist, also solstice day) yes. I think even in the French Basque country, St. Jean's day may be a good reason to go to the beach. To some extent, the Fourth is our equivalent.

Some commentors are saying, this is a great way to honor our armed forces. I say, an emphatic no to that. Let's start honoring these men and women by starting with the Vets, especially the maimed emotionally, physically and any other way. Let's take the Viet Vets off the streets, along with the
Iraqi and Afghanistani vets. Then, get the vets to the docs real fast, instead of waiting many months for help. Keep in mind, we have vets committing suicide in record numbers.
My cousin, a disabled Iraqi vet waited for almost a year for
disability checks. Family had to help. His wife wrote a letter to Michelle Obama, and relief was quickly forthcoming. That
was honoring a vet, the wait was not. Little we do truly honors them. They struggle. This display of Trump's will doesn't do them honor, just gives them more work on a hot
day to satisfy some ego-driven wanna-be dictator.

Let’s get back on track here. While it’s a fine line between tragedy and comedy, there have been far too many refusals to cross that line and see Trump for what he is—one of the funniest Presidents we’ve ever had—he’s a clown (although not a very good one and some people are afraid of clowns, although I’m not).
Ms. Collins brings to the fore this aspect of Trump’s persona (sorry, I can’t bring myself to use the words “Trump” and “character” in the same sentence)—she’s one of the few who can wade through the misogyny, the authoritarianism, the childish egomania, the ignorance, the brutal disregard, the psychotic (yes, I mean that) dreams of grandeur, the exhibited contempt for ordinary folk like us, the willful disregard of simple democratic norms and civil living together—and show us that we can laugh at this guy. Yes, he’s a sad character, but there are sad clowns.
When all is considered, this guy is a scream and we need to laugh him out of office. It’s literally hilarious for this guy to think he can get away with this nonsense, as those of us with a sense of humor (and perspective) are going to show him at the next election.
This isn’t just tragedy—it’s what’s called tragicomedy. We mustn’t forget this way of looking at Presidents who think they’re our Commander.

I woke up too early this holiday morning concerned about what he's doing to the Justice Dept with his new orders to defy the Supreme Court's ruling about the census. When a Democrat is elected President next year I hope to see a different type of celebration on the following 4th. There should be free picnic lunches, free clothes, free bedding, and gift cards for persons in the USA illegally, free dental and medical clinics set up near the celebration, marching bands from every liberal college and secondary school, and impassioned speeches by members of the liberal entertainment community and those who want immediate open borders and immediate citizenship and free healthcare for anyone who wants to enter the USA. There can be free noisemakers, free sparklers, and free (non helium) balloons for everyone. The evening fireworks display will use environmentally safe products. My only July 14 in Paris was in 1974 and I readily admit to my astonishment at the show of weaponry. I’ve been thinking about just exactly why Trump’s take-over of the 4th is so disturbing. Surely it is not because there will be 2 tanks and 2 Bradley vehicles on the Mall? That hardly qualifies as a Red Square extravaganza. Instead, I think it is because he has so completely missed the point of the day.
We do have a great military and we have asked too much of them over the past two decades, but a parade will not even that score. And, we already celebrate them with two holidays, Veterans’ Day and Memorial Day. We thank them every time they cash a paycheck (although we do not pay them enough), go to the VA (needs to be improved), or take advantage of any of the GI Bill benefits.
The 4th has never been about them, although they have often been included in the celebration. Instead, the 4th has always been about the rest of us who contribute in countless small, usually unheroic, ways to the survival and success of this country. It celebrates those who pay their bills, go to work, teach the children, keep their lawns mowed, raise corn and feed pigs, obey the laws, and try to stay informed about issues. Without us, there would be nothing but real estate for the military to defend.
We celebrate ourselves with small town parades, hot dogs, corn on the cob, watermelon, sparklers, bottle rockets, friends, and family. I doubt if any of us think to turn and thank our neighbor at the end of the night for keeping America great, but that is what the holiday is about— US.

If we put Trump out to pasture in the 2020 election, by soundly defeating him and removing him peacefully or by physical force from the Oval Office, then I may embrace the optimism you exude. Until then, I am not confident "we can probably get through anything." If he doesn't go in 2020, we can schedule a requiem for the nation.

If James Madison was the father - maybe that should be godfather - of the constitution, Roger Sherman was essentially the father of federalism. He remains pretty much unknown today.
Sherman's maneuvering at the constitutional convention blocked and stalled delegates who favored wholesale shift from weak to strong national government. Hamilton would have emasculated the states. Madison favored a national veto of state enactments. In contrast, Sherman pushed a "pick and choose" approach to the division between the states and the national government.
James Buchanan and Andrew Johnson are trading high fives at the prospect of moving up from the bottom of the rankings, but Lincoln is turning over in his grave at what his party has become. Sorry, correct that: the Democratic Party is now the party of Lincoln, or at least his ideals.

I am not a big war monger, I don't get a thrill out of exploding things, but I do understand that freedom isn't free, and I am glad I don't have to sit inside of a tank in the desert. They still aren't air conditioned, and the seats aren't very comfortable.

The display of tanks does not harken patriotism. Instead, it reminds me of Soviet tanks rolling into Eastern European countries, post World War II - the epitome of totalitarian control and the overthrow of a democratic governments. It reminds me of the Tianamin Square civil disobedience and subsequent atrocities by the Chinese.

We are a much more resilient country that we sometimes give ourselves credit for. Yes, we are a flawed and imperfect society (I am the first to admit). Yes, we do stupid and cruel things (witness the border) but we also have many public and private persons passionate to set our ship right. This is one of the many reasons we should all take this day to read up a little on our past and present.
This is Trump's parade; it has become Trump's excessive reality show. It would do the nation good if he acknowledged the commitment of civil society to the American polity. He won't.
When I see military parades in the US I think of my father, a WWII vet, a field commission officer who took command of a platoon of tanks. He was one of the commanders in North Africa chasing Rommel. He did not want to see a tank outside of military installations; he understood that it is not the equipment that is impressive. It is the people who operate them.

I support Master Trump on his military parade. He wants to show the world this is what we really mean by saying we are #1. He certainly could not parade teachers down the mall. I love Gail Collins but I take issue with this common sentiment that the nation "survived Millard Fillmore, Franklin Pierce and Warren Harding" [& James Buchanan]. These bad presidents made things worse. Fillmore (who succeeded Taylor, after Taylor died from his 4th of July snack) signed the Fugitive Slave Law; Pierce, a Southern sympathizer, sent troops to destroy the Free-State Legislature in "Bleeding Kansas"; Harding's successor, Coolidge, turned a blind eye to the bank crisis that exploded into the Depression under Hoover; & Buchanan did nothing to avert, & probably hastened, the Civil War. This is survival? This would be like the Germans congratulating themselves that they survived Hitler.
In short- the US will outlive Trump. If it survives as a progressive society & a beacon of freedom to the world, it will take a long long time--& that's the hopeful prognosis.

I'm sorry, Gail, but using James Buchanan and Andrew Johnson as examples of what kind of awful Presidents this country has survived does not reassure me. This is because most of the damage their incompetence resulted in did not occur during their terms, but after. Buchanan left the country stumbling towards a civil war, and Johnson's failure to pursue Lincoln's path towards reconciliation contributed to the collapse of Reconstruction into the age of Jim Crow.
What is lying in wait for us after this fool leaves office? Not a cheerful thought for the Glorious Fourth, but there it is.

If I may say, on your national holiday, as much as Mr. Trump frequently causes me to despair, when I speak to or meet an American through work or pleasure, I am reminded just how the vast majority are good, decent and generous people.

During the 90's I lived on Capitol Hill and, as a naturalized citizen , I have celebrated Independence Day often. We would go over early in the day , stake out a good piece of lawn with quilts and a guard and go home to prepare the feast and gather our guests, mostly Europeans who always were impressed with the peaceful gathering of large crowds and of course the music and the fireworks. All of it always took my breath away and made my mascara run.
I am not happy with the changes taking place this year, I have my memories of the real and honorable America I made my home , no one can touch those.

@Karin Byars. I have a similar memory. I was there in the 80s and did the same. A highlight for me will be a picnic on the lawn, listening to Aaron Copeland conduct the National Symphony Orchestra playing Appalachian Spring. There was no better way to celebrate the day.

I can't think of a more patriotic way to celebrate our nation's Independence than to be among fellow Americans on the National Mall viewing the fireworks or taking in all of the nearby monuments to people and events that have made this country great. And yet I can say, unequivocally, even if I won an all-expense-paid trip to be there this year for the 4th of July I would have to say, "No thank you." As a mom who watched as her son was deployed with fellow Marines to Iraq in 2007/2008, I can't fathom a President who used heel spurs to avoid serving his country having the audacity to lord over a "Salute to America" with an emphasis on military displays and demonstrations.

From 1923 until 1938 massive rallies were held in Nuremberg, Germany, featuring troops, tanks, aircraft, speeches and mock battles. These rallies were carefully choreographed by the party to convey military might and fervent nationalism.

Trump Obstructed the investigation into Russian interference in Our elections (see the Mueller Impeachment Referral) and is still saying that he would except information from a foreign government trying to interfere in our elections. Helping a foreign government hack our elections by accusing the intelligence agencies trying to defend us for two years of treason (with no credible evidence*) is treason.
[*Carter Page was under surveillance for years before Trump appointed him. If there was any evidence that the FBI was involved in a coup arrests would be made.]

Not only did he view abolitionists as an existential threat to the nation, he spent his presidency in the throes of severe clinical depression following the death of his son in a train derailment on his way to the inauguration. At times he was barely functional and at others actively destructive to the Union, Pierce's presidency was a disaster.

I like this soul for the independence day: "If we got through James Buchanan, Andrew Johnson and Watergate, we can probably get through anything."
Today, while celebrating our independence soul of freedom, there is a bug in the streets called "Trump fanatics", fueled by a president who feel on the steep part of his runway, after Mueller's report. To compensate, war on Iran was one fruit to entertain. His show in North Korea another. Then the foolish parade, a third. The latter is a stone for three birds, defiant irresponsible spending, a bet for election, and going out of track of the founding fathers. The populist thinks he is shining today, on the expense of America's values.

It's true that Trump pardoned the turkeys. And it is fair to say he intends to pardon more of them in the future.

Mark my words. He will use the photos taken today with the Lincoln Memorial as a backdrop for his campaign. There is no end to his grifting.

Trump isn't very good with facts. Perhaps he thinks that the Revolutionary War was fought with tanks (before they were invented). A visit to Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia would be a useful trip for him, if he could pay attention to the guides.
Today's Washington events are "All Hail Trump", the new king of America. Will Ivanka or Donald Jr. be his successor?
Tanks or no tanks, have nothing to with it-- it’s good to reminds ourselves that President Donald Trump has lot in common with our great presidents like George Washington and President Abraham Lincoln. The press accused George Washington of being a spy for King George. Just like President Trump was slandered as a Russian spy for past years. Horrific cartoons appeared depicting George Washington guillotined by the King Louis of France. Remember, during civil-war, President Lincoln faced up most vicious attacks and vilifications by then the slave-owning-Democrats. Meanwhile, Mr. Trump's reforms of our government is clear threat to Washington's entrenched power elite. Mr. Trump is an insurgent and a revolutionary. Dr. Kissinger in a recent interview said that Mr. Trump is destined become a great American president. He will dramatically reduce size of big-government, get rid of armies of unelected officials, in their taxpayer funded officialdoms─ who used their powers to circumvent the will and the aspirations of Americans. He will disable the bureaucratic empires by which Democrats keep themselves the power and privileges. He's reforming the judiciary to reflect more of the American people rather than whimsies and post-modern fancies of urban elite. He will ignore the media and speak directly to the American people. Mr. Trump is becoming the great-restorer of America’s original promise. As Mr. Lincoln put it “a government of the people, by the people and for the people…”

I respectfully take exception with the contention the James Buchanan, though a horrible President, is worse than Donald Trump. Buchanan did nothing to avert a civil war. Trump is fomenting one. In the estimation of many, including a large number of Presidential historians, Trump is 45th out of 45.

After 9/11, there was a magnificent concert presented by The Philadelphia Orchestra honoring our country. It was held outside at a seasonal venue. If memory serves, it was free but required a reservation. I was there.
I have never forgotten the emotion the music of OUR country, OUR USA, evoked among us all. There were tears everywhere as we sang America the Beautiful, and more.
There were no tanks, there was no military brass forced to stand on stage. As horrific an event that 9/11 was ( I lost a friend there and remember him often), a terrorist attack on OUR nation with ongoing repercussions, those of us who were able to attend that magnificent concert "felt" in our hearts and minds and souls, what it was to be an American.
I think daily, "What if?" ........what if, Hillary Clinton won NOT ONLY the popular vote but the Electoral college count, we would have ?
Today's, What if?.....Answer: We would have a "Tank-Free Fourth" - as has been customary where ALL Americans can honor our country and our Democracy - and not an indulgence by an egotistical (non-military serving conman with suspicious "bone spurs") who everyday steals another little bit of our Democracy, leading the charge.

We’re going to have to have a yuge national ceremony to exorcise the toxic waste and graft ithat is our current administration. That’s the only way the beautiful Lincoln memorial and our fascinating (!) country will be itself again.

Presidents and tanks - brings to mind Boris Yeltsin standing down an attempted coup. Citizens and tanks - brings to mind a Chinese square with a mock-up statue reminiscent of our Statue of Liberty. Walls and tanks - brings to mind the building of the Berlin Wall (and the destruction by citizens with hands, chisels and shovels.) Trump and tanks - just another ego trip in the tour-de-force known as corruption, neglect, and incompetence that will be his legacy.
This farce on the fourth fills the last square needed to win on the wanna-be dictator bingo card. The prize he claims should be a date in the Senate for trial on impeachment charges.

While this military parade is distasteful, we shouldn't sit here clutching our pearls and pretending that this is happening out of nowhere. Jingoism and fake patriotism, with the military as a backdrop, ratcheted up after 9-11. We've had military propaganda at sporting events and in just about every other facet of our lives. We allowed the blending of militarism and patriotism when we succumbed to the lies and propaganda of a Bush administration that promoted endless wars, fear, and paranoia. The landscape was fertile for Trump to insert his own vainglorious motives. I hope the serfs in the South and Midwest who voted him in enjoy their tinpot parade.

Note to Trump's supporters who protest that the widespread discomfort about Trump's military parade stems just from the Democrats' ill feelings towards Trump: It seems that we have gotten wise to Trump's narcissistic penchant for self- aggrandizement and therefore, yes, the protests about this display of military hardware do have an association with Trump. After all, he is the guy who calls himself "your favorite president", and treats every holiday as a personal rally to rile up his base. Today will be no different. Trump is in fact misusing our military for his manchild like impulses to be worshipped. And we know it. Now.

Tanks in cities are clear symbols of authoritarianism and attempts at repressing dissent or even the freedom of citizens to express themselves and assert freedoms.
Think Hungary and Prague in the 1956 and 1968.
And which country sent in the tanks in both cases?
Hint: Putin's country (OK, USSR, not Russia, but same Moscow leadership).
Putin and his ilk like tanks. And Trump loves Putin and wants to emulate him.
Tanks have no place in US INDEPENDENCE Day celebrations.
They're the antithesis of what we're supposed to be celebrating!

The worst thing about Donald Trump is that he is a danger to national and even world security. He's making horrible mistakes in the Middle East, and he's letting international autocrats like Putin and MBS control what he does. Also, due to the Internet, these autocrats can do what they will on the cheap and without firing a shot.
His fomenting hate against the other is tearing this nation apart. He treats migrants like they're subhuman.
Remind you of anyone?

Trump pushes boundaries, norms, and customs, breaks laws and defies Constitution—Muslim ban, lying with impunity, mass separations of immigrant families, non-release of tax returns, and illegal blockage of their release, commandeering of appropriated taxpayers money for southern wall and his closed 4th of July party, mass incarceration of children in cages and abysmal conditions, explicit support of racist behavior, Americans health imperiled by environmental policies, rollbacks, and denial of climate change, deliberate acts of personal and family’s financial enhancement in violation of Constitution and federal laws, multiple acts of obstruction of justice, witness tampering, campaign finance violations, acceptance of illegal campaign and inauguration money from foreign governments and individuals, dereliction of duty by providing inadequate government financial and logistical support to Puerto Rico and its people, using taxpayers money for family travel expenses while conducting official government business, and more.
Who is not only going to say no more, but literally put the stop to Trump’s inappropriate, power-abusing, illegal, and anti-constitutional behavior?

She is very much part of the regime...just doing a different part.
Remember in 2006 when we have the Senate and we just won the house, she adamantly refused to investigate W and his war criminals who got us in the Iraq disastrous.
I wonder if she ever imagine this nightmare scenario: he wins reelection, they keep the Senate and we lose the House.
I hope she has an emergancy exit plan out the country ready.

I am most definitely an optimist. Even in the face of climate change, the most dire crisis in human existence, a crisis solely made by capitalism, including Chinese and Russian capitalism, that will never ever be addressed, much less solved, in a world dominated by capitalism.
That's because the US radical right is doomed, they will never win, and they know it. The ascendancy of a "left wing" America, a revolutionary post-capitalist America, will be a true "light upon the nations" to see our way through the climate and other crises facing us.

Hey, I like tanks (too). Your comments on George Washington are on the mark. He gave up power gracefully at least two times and though a patrician, refused the triumph. He studiously avoided fame and celebrity but maintained nobility of character. What a good example.
America has always been military but never militaristic. Thank God we are not the Prussians.
We are an imperfect union striving toward perfection. God bless our best efforts.

While I wouldn't want to see tanks grinding up the asphalt or gunning their engines; I see no harm in displaying them positioned motionless. (This is known as a "static display" in military jargon.) Seems to me like an awfull lot of handwringing over what are essentially props. While George Washington had only smooth bore cannons for military use a tank would have been a welcome addition had one been available.

Trump has appropriated the 4th of July to turn it into a campaign rally, and illegally appropriated funds allocated for something else to pay for it.
Trump keeps threatening American Citizens with political violence. Each time it is a High Crime.
He threatened us with "the military, the police, and bikers for Trump," more than once.
These tanks are a threat to American Citizens, just like the tanks in the streets of Moscow are used to threaten dissent in Russia.

The problem is not that Buchanan, Fillmore, etc. , look pretty good compared to Trump, the problem is that the opposition is a disorganized mess of tribal “wokefulness ” giving Trump a better than even chance of being re-elected. Pray that even if he is defeated we have not just replaced an authoritarian of the right with one of the left.

Thanks for trying to cheer us up on this 4th of July, Gail, but it’s not working. I used to love to go to my city’s annual fireworks display and revel in the sense of community and celebrate the old-fashioned feel of the event. I can’t do it anymore. Because I can’t sit on the grass and wonder which 42% of my fellow fireworks watchers have lost their minds and still -after everything that’s happened - support this human disgrace. I have nothing in common with them and nothing to say to them. And I certainly don’t want my celebration of all that this country was founded on sullied by sharing it with them.

I would like to believe we can take the ridiculousness of this current administration with grains of deep sighs and quiet laughter, while watching it’s slow, self-destructive demise over the next 16 months until the election. But I’m afraid what we may be witnessing is a campaign message from a beleaguered incumbent, in full campaign mode, and desperately trying to appeal to the nation. But this appeal is not one of reason, or one of contemplation on the history of our democracy. This appeal is simple: “guess who is the commander and chief of the tanks”.

Yes, we will survive the "Tribute" to could be the worst President in US History (he is in the running). The two competitors were at least cheaper as they stole less. Thunderstorms tonight may settle all this too.
I still feel great about this country and the many people that really do exemplify the real American Spirit. There are a great many more than the other. We celebrate the Freedom we enjoy with Tribute to no one.

Yes, a symbol of tRump’s pride and joy
Many times over I listen to Martin Luther King's speech "I have a dream" given at the Lincoln Memorial. It still makes me shake to the bones realizing what happened there, what one single man could accomplish with the help of another sharing the same spirit, hopes and sacrifice - at that moment MLK and Lincoln became brothers, impossible to ever undo.
And now we have a president who single handedly aims to destroy it all. He won't succeed. Impossible.

Sadly, he isn’t doing this alone. The silent complicity of the GOP leadership with this lawless, corrupt, ignorant and dangerous administration is, in my view, the real threat.
I have an image of the Lincoln Memorial in my mind today, our day of independence. Instead of sitting tall and proud, Lincoln is slumped over, head in his hands, in dismay over what is playing out before him.

Thank you Gail for giving us a bit of perspective. As bad as Trump is, he looks better when compared with other presidents elected during my 76 years who gave orders resulting in the deaths of millions of people across the globe. Despite the founding fathers' efforts to ensure that the president would NOT evolve into yet another king, we have given the president so many powers that he might as well be a king. There is a saying that once the toothpaste is out of the tube it's impossible to get it back inside. Fortunately, the presidency is not toothpaste. It will be possible to walk back the powers that have transformed the president from an executive charged with making sure the laws created by congress are obeyed into a monstrosity. This can be done when a congress and a president cooperate to dismantle and remove the presidential powers (like the commandeering of tanks on the national mall) that were never intended by the founders of our nation.

@felix you are correct in saying that Presidents have gained power over the years. This escalation of Presidential powers has happened mostly because Congress has allowed it. Congress has not done its job. When was the last time they actually passed a budget instead of a continuing resolution? Immigration: Congress should have acted ages ago. Congress should be challenging 45 every day in every way. Congressional oversight is part of Congress’s job; it isn’t harassment of the Executive Branch. Climate change: Congress should have been on board twenty years ago. President Obama only acted on Climate change because Congress would not do a thing. & so on.

I think you underestimate how many deaths happen and will happen due to global warming, due to lack of health care, due to worsening of air and water quality, due to poverty.
The best thing about Donald Trump is that he is 73, and even if Mitch McConnell and his spineless lackeys let Trump be Emperor for life, that's still going to be a very short period of time.

Regarding the sight of tanks and patriotic citizens in the streets of capital cities:
I think of the heroic, inspiring, unarmed people of Prague confronting the tanks of the Soviet invaders in 1968 captured so brilliantly in the photographs of Josef Koudelka. It took two decades, but the force those tanks represented was ultimately defeated.
And I think of that extraordinary lone citizen of Beijing, plastic shopping bags suspended from each hand, fed up with the invading PLA and confronting that line of tanks in the middle of the broad boulevard after the night of the massacre in and around Tiananmen Square June 4, 1989. For three decades that powerful image has been forbidden in mainland China; but the people of Hong Kong know it well.

Can you post it directly on the FB post for Gail’s column. More readers will see your juxtaposition of the tanks in Prague and China and the tanks set out for gaudy display on our National Mall.

There might not have been a Constitution without Roger Sherman, who should be more famous. He was the only person to have signed the Continental Association, Declaration of Independence, Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution. He proposed the Connecticut Compromise which created a bicameral legislative branch which gave smaller states equal representation in the Senate, convincing them to support the Constitution. We may well rue the day this was created since it also gives smaller states a greater influence on the electoral college than their populations deserve. We will see more presidents elected who lose the popular vote but still win despite the fact that the aggregate population of red states is far below that of the more populated blue states. In the future you could see 20 percent of the population controlling 60 percent of the electoral votes.
