Big data should help but not if it’s just dropped into suboptimal decision, resource allocation and interagency communication processes. Conflicting objectives, such as property protection vs crew safety, will not be resolved by big data. And big data, if used primarily for cost control, could have unfortunate results.

Use all of the tools in your toolbox, firefighters, but don't ever tell a homeowner that his/her home was burned because the "computer gave us bad information".

@Ed Andrews - correct. Tell them their home was burned because they live in an area prone to seasonal, fast-moving wildfires.

While this story is interesting and talks of the need for such a predictive program, it makes little mention of whether it is actually effective.

It would be helpful that a topic like this was covered with more information on the data that’s used, how it is gathered, it’s processing and a sample output. This articles is primarily quotes that in general are obvious.
