Brooks Koepka, Seeking a 3rd Straight U.S. Open Title, Could Be the Star Golf Needs

During a practice round at the PGA Championship at Bethpage Black, one of Koepka's playing partners, who I won't name, was talking talking talking while Koepka and two others were sizing up putts and getting a feel for the sixth green. The chatter, mostly directed at Koepka, didn't stop as the foursome walked up to the cramped tee box on seven and continued while Koepka surveyed the vast desert of tall grass between him and the fairway some three hundred yards out at the ideal landing zone. When the animated storyteller finally stepped aside and went silent to let Koepka hit, well, you can guess where Koepka put his drive. Yes, it was only a practice round but watching him absorb, politely, what sure looked like a prolonged distraction to me, in a way I have only seen from Tiger, was telling.

The star that golf needs? Why? It’s never going to be played in the numbers of other team sports. The professional endorsement and prize money is pretty good. All I read in the Times is how terrible the sport is for society. If Tiger Woods can’t generate more golfers, no one ever will.

@Shamrock Terrible for society how? I read the Times too.

Koepka seems like a nice enough guy, I guess, and his game is clearly excellent, but he has all the charisma of a kielbasa. Definitely not the second coming of Tiger, maybe a second helping of sauerkraut?
