recently in Tokyo where I typically only need one word ('sumimasen !' - please/sorry/excuse me/waiter !) I only used Google Translate to try to interpret some Japanese labels - typically so weird - more humorous than helpful.
but I recall one time we were in a remote train station and hungry - not seeing any places we wanted to eat, we approached a teenage school girl sitting by herself and spoke into the translate option and gave it to her to listen to - getting the gist of it, she in turn spoke Japanese to it and gave it to us to listen to.
In a few moments we built a rapport, she had the spare time waiting for her train and volunteered to show us her recommended restaurant. We would have been happy for her to point out the directions, but she was clearly delighted with the opportunity to break up her usual boredom with an opportunity to interact with foreigners. So she walked with us - about a kilometre - side by side as we passed the smartphone google translate back and forth - we got to the restaurant and offered to pay for her meal but she declined with thanks and went back to the train station.
It had clearly made her day - and we were very happy with her recommendation of restaurant where we enjoyed the meal - all thanks to google translate !
