erwin rommel (Normandy)
I think that Military Drills in Arctic Aim to Counter Russia, but the First Mission Is to Battle the Cold Moscow is moving to claim Arctic territory as barriers between Russia and North America melt. Yet still bitter temperatures pose an immediate threat to NATO troops defending icy waterways.
Alisher Yokubjonov (New York City)
@erwin rommel I thought that the connection to politics was very interesting and inciteful. You took a look at the big picture. Well done.
Mrs. G's class (L.A)
I think the men are in Antarctica because there is snow and ice. There are two men going in to the very cold water which I think is maybe in the negatives and outside to. The two men that are going in the water are wearing water suits. They seem to be looking for something. I also think that the men are scientists. It looks like they have maybe expensive equipment.
Joseph (Montana)
I'm guessing from what I'm seeing on their uniforms that some of these people are part of the Finnish army, and some of them are part of the GIGN. I originally though that these were Russians as, Russian uniforms mostly consist of the green camo that you'd see on the guy at the far left. The two in the front however, I'm not sure where they're from, but they are in scuba gear with their feet in the water, which I can guess is just absolutely freezing. It looks like they're in the process of actually setting up their scuba gear, the one on the right looking like he's having more problems then the other. The tubs in the back look like they have something connected to the scuba men. Could be oxygen, or could be a panic wire, I'm not sure. There also seems to be something in the back right in the middle that has a dial on it, that might be something to deal with pressure or oxygen, but again, I'm not sure.
Patrick (school)
It looks like they are soldiers from Finland training to scuba dive under ice o they are looking for something. I think it's some type of spacial forces from Finland.
Beau (Montana, USA)
the photo seems to have a group of soldiers prepping for a dive. the reason I say this is because first there are two people in scuba gear getting ready. Then I cant really make out the country from just my basic knowledge i could mostly find out the country if i were to google it or do some research. I infer that the men are either on a train mission or a diving mission to take sample or do something in that field. The men also seem to have some rope attached to them for maybe the purpose of getting back to the right place or so they stay together. completing my statement the men are in some really cool camo which I will definitely be finding out what kind it is.
Miss McKee's class 4NM (Millway Primary School)
We infer that the group of men are in a very cold place because of their surroundings and what they are wearing. We infer that they are from Finland because they have a Finnish flag on their shoulder. We infer that the box in the background provides oxygen for the divers. We infer that they have just come out of the water because it looks like they are taking their masks off rather than putting them on. We infer that one member has a flare in case of an emergency.
4JB (England)
-We are inferring that the standing men are helping those that are seated because they are putting the masks on. - Also, we infer they're in Antarctica because there is snow everywhere. - We infer that the red tanks are oxygen tanks to help the men who are going underwater. -We infer they have connected pipes into their suits to give a supply of oxygen because they are going in the water. - We infer they are about to go in the water because they don't appear to be wet. - Additionally, they are wearing spiked boots to stop them from slipping. -We infer the blue and white badge is the Finnish badge. - Also, we infer they are in the army because of their camouflaged uniform. - We infer it snows regularly because there are mountains of snow behind them. - We infer that the mats are there to stop them slipping because they've got spikes on them and if they fall in the water they could die because of the deep, freezing water. - We infer that the water is deep because it is really dark.
J Banks (Cincinnati)
I think they going down to catch something at the bottom.
Division 6 (Victoria, BC)
We are wondering if the divers are on their way up or are they still going for a dive? Why do they have to scuba diving in the really cold weather? Why not scuba dive in a warmer place? We assume that the divers are coming back out because it looks like they are taking off their helmets instead of putting them on. Why are they scuba diving? What are they looking for? I noticed that the military people had flags and polar bear patches. The yellow knife will be handy if the divers need to cut something. The divers might be looking for endangered animals or to research animals in general.
Ms. Lott's Class (Midvale Middle School)
We notice: We notice that they are from the military or army, and they are in the middle of nowhere. 2 people are diving, the rest are team members helping with research. We assume that they are somewhere cold. We wonder: How deep do the scuba divers have to dive? What are they searching for? Why are they searching underwater?
4JB (England)
@Ms. Lott's Class We agree, we also think they are from the army because they are wearing camouflaged uniform. In answer to your question about what they are searching for, we believe that they are searching for different/ endangered species because we haven't explored all of the seas and oceans.
Ms. Wicker 8th Grade (Rosebud Sioux Reservation)
Q1: The Swedish military personnel are getting ready to dive in the water. They are exploring or looking for something. Q2: They are wearing military uniforms (camouflage) with a foreign flag on one and the men with their feet in the water are wearing breathing masks. Q3: It looks cold, because they're bundled up and there is snow and ice nearby. It looks scary because it looks bleak. It looks like dangerous work because there are ropes and the divers have knives. They must get paid a lot.
abhinav4987 (india)
The pictures shows military persons from Finland, pretty evident from the flag stitched onto to the sleeve of their uniform. Being one of the northernmost countries in the world the personals have to endure through the usual snowy habitat over there. Well now being specific to whats going on the pic, the first thing that comes to my mind is that these guys are cleaning their water tankers XD.Other than that thy could be sending in team to be sure whatever secretive they have don there. Also could be a rescue mission ,but the what is the police for then?
Mrs. Livingston 2nd Grade (Ohio)
We think these people belong or work for some part of the Military. They are in a very cold place. We know this from the suits they are wearing and the ice they are standing on. Some of us think they are practicing how to rescue someone in the water and some of us think they are searching under the water for something.
Jace (Diamond Bar)
Q1. What is going on in this picture? In Tuktoyaktuk, Canada, about 870 miles away from Resolute Bay, troops preparing to dive into the partly frozen Arctic Ocean. So this means that the divers are going down into the freezing depths of the ocean. I say this becasue the picture and the setting and the clothing contains valuable info. Q2. Why do you say that? I say this becasue the picture and the setting and the clothing contains valuable info. Q3. What more can you find. I can find all about the time setting where it is and what they are doing also what they are about to do/
Tim (San Diego)
Q1. What is going on in this picture? It looks like maybe some navy divers from a European country are getting ready to go under the ice. It looks like a serious situation but they seem like maybe they have done it before. Q2. What do you see that makes you say that? They look like divers because they have dive suits and masks on and they have their feet already in the water. The others are wearing camouflage and have flags and badges on their clothing. Maybe the flag for Finland or Norway. None of their faces look very worried but no one is smiling or paying attention to the camera. Q3. What more can you find? There is a man dressed differently in the center. He might be a leader or another diver. Two of the men helping have headphones with mics so they might be able to communicate with the divers or others.
Ms. Wicker (He Dog, South Dakota)
@Tim We agree that it looks like a serious situation, because everyone looks focused on the divers and in deep concentration. Maybe it's a dangerous task. The divers even have knives.
4JB (England)
@Tim Class 4JB hadn't thought about the idea that they have done it before, however, we agree, they look like they know what they are doing. Thank you for the insight.
Terran (New Jersey)
Q1: What is going on in this picture? Deep sea divers in Antarctica are getting ready with a team of biologists to go into a fishing hole to explore what’s going on underneath the surface. Q2: What do you see that makes you say that? In the background, there are mounds of snow and ice and the people are dressed in heavy winter jackets. The helpers are fumbling with the divers’ suit. There is an opening in the ground where the divers are dipping their legs into. Q3: What more can you find? The divers have a knife attached to their leg and the helpers have a Finnish flag on their arm’s.
kade (california)
What I saw in this picture were 7 men in the army and 2 of them were doing a diving mission as it seems. There are 3 of them in all camo green coats and the last in in a black coat.
Eimantas S (NJ)
I see a soldier with a Finnish flag who is helping the diver on the right and what appears to be a Norwegian flag on the soldier helping the diver on the left. I assume that the other soldiers in the picture are also from Scandinavia, Nordic region or another EU country. Judging by the fact that the divers are carrying knives on the sides of their legs, leads me to assume that these allied nations are training marines somewhere in the Arctic ocean.
Raina (Vermont)
I think these are navy SEALs in training, working to build up endurance against incredibly cold temperatures. The men around them are in stereotypical military gear, so that could explain the military connection.
Squad7 (NH)
We think that this is a special ops or dive training mission with different military representatives from various countries. We see a Swedish flag and a Denmark flag as patches on the uniforms the men are wearing. We also see communication lines and dive tanks. We noticed that the camouflage uniforms differ for each country.
5/6F (Margate Primary School)
In our primary class, we think the divers could be: Conducting a research dive (temp) A world record dive for cold water Hunting for food Investigating a boat crash Finding people who were lost Could be diving to look for plastic pollution (climate change) We also noticed: Knives, contraption on the right, and cold.
Ilan (San Jose)
I think the people are exploring the waters of the arctic. The camouflage is to hide from animals but in my opinion it's not the best.
Mosey (Greenville SC)
I infer that they are training for a rescue in the Arctic. I also see men in military uniforms. I also see a cut out shape of a rectangle and water inside it , that way I can tell that they are practicing a water rescue in the ocean.
Raina (Vermont)
@Mosey I agree that they could be associated with the military. It would make sense that they are training for an underwater rescue in the arctic.
Olafstafari (Holland)
I think this is a military operation to find wreckage of a previous war or expedition. It looks to me like the soldiers are from Finland but their outfits are not all the same so it might be a joined forces op. So either they want to check each other or they don't want to spend money on this alone or they don't know what they will find and they hope to share in the spoils.
Cadence (Riverside CA)
I think by the flags on there suits they are from Finland and Norway and possibly the US. So they might be sending the divers to look or try to discover something.
Luis R. H. M. (Riverside, CA)
Moving from left to right, I can see a leafy-green suit, indicating that they are a part of a nation military-wise. On his left, another man in a green suit is seen but with a visible flag. This flag is red, white, and blue in a cross pattern, the Norwegian flag. Below him, is a diver, dressed in a black suit. There is another diver next to him and above that diver is a man, also in black, wearing a sweater. Moving on right, there is another navy/army man. He has Finland’s flag on his left arm. He is helping tie something onto the diver. Lastly, there is another human behind them. The divers have their feet dangling in the water. With research, I can find that that the man on my left is from the U.S. navy, judging by his suit. The seal can probably be from the United Nations or Navies but it is still unclear.
Robert (pcs)
i think that they are tring to find some hing that is under the ice that could go back to some war. or some thing is i potint to the it look like all of the peopl are in rushu it look like ti is could out. and they are mite be tring to find some think from WW1 that culd tell them some thing that could tell them more about WW1.
idk (grandmas bathroom)
guys preparing to go into ice cold water maybe to find something. they might be training for something but it loos like there somewhere cold.
Ice Cream (and cake and cake)
This is a military training exercise. I see military looking people and I also see a clean cut hole indicating the use of a tool.
Soulja Rag Murder (I live in the basement)
Military from Finland. They help divers to descend under water. Most likely it is a training swim under water. Perhaps this is training before an important task.
Mrs. Cunningham's Class (Trinidad)
Mrs. Cunningham's class thinks that the military of Finland and Norway are conducting a test under water somewhere close to the Arctic Circle or on the border of Finland and Norway.
Soulja Rag Murder (I live in the basement)
@Mrs. Cunningham's Class You're absolutely right....
Mrs. M's group (Boston)
In the Arctic or in Antarctica, some men from the army are preparing divers to go down into the water to save people or animals who are drowning.
Alita (Vancouver, WA)
What is going on in this photo? I think that two people were exploring the water under the ice. What do you see that makes you say that? I see that two people have masks on and they are kind of in the water. What more do you notice, look closely? I notice that those people might have cut through the ice to get to the water. Make up a headline for this photo Explorers Describe the who; People exploring the water Where do you think the setting is? North Pole When do you think this is happening? I think this happened recently. Why is this happening? I think they want to see what was under the ice and in the water.
Annia (Vancouver, WA)
I think that there are two men that have been inside ice water for a long time and the Miller military have just discovered them and they're helping them out so yeah. What makes me say that is that there are two men coming out of the icy water and they have air vents or something and there's people military suits so that looks like the military and Elsa see some ice around it so they could mean That the water is really cold because ice is surrounding it so the letter probably would get cold before it's not ice. I said that there was Ice around it or they were and I thought I'd like maybe it could be a volcano covered with ice and they could be discovering it inside. I also saw the scuba divers free closing their eyes that they were cold or hot I don't know because if it was going to be able to Kano would be hot because a lot of us inside but then there was Ice all around and I feel like a climate change because they're going from hot to cold or hot. I think that a good headline for this picture would be discovering the unknown.
Aidan (Vancouver, WA)
What is going on in this photo? People are getting ready to dive. What do you see that makes you say that? People are in scuba gear going into water What more do you notice, look closely? It looks like they are in a icy place. Make up a headline for this photo Scuba in Antarctica Describe the who; Looks like military. Where do you think the setting is? Very cold place like Antarctica. When do you think this is happening? They are going on a adventure in very cold water. Why is this happening? People are going scuba diving.
Mia (New Zealand)
Luca from same class as Mia in NZ Nelson Finnish men doing some kind of military training in the arctic circle around scandinavia. They use the pickaxe to cut the hole in the ground. The torch and knife are for the military training, maybe they are special ops. But then they pull two men out of the ice, there was no mistaking their accents they were russian spies each armed with deadly weapons.
Mrs. Barrett's Group (Batavia, NY)
Michael - I think the military men are getting suits on because people might put evidence down in the ocean. They are going to find hidden evidence and people are go find it. Jamari - I see people in an icy place and they have suits on that are camouflage and outfits to go into the water. they are probably going into the water. I see a flag on his shoulder. I think there is two people going into the water to research sea creatures and they have a lot of stuff to go under the water. One has a flashlight. They are going to find new sea creatures. I think the cord is for how deep they go. They either came in a helicopter or from a place near by because they have crates. Sonny - They are diving to find new animals and they are from Finland because of the flag on their jackets. It's in a tundra biome. They are wearing special suits so they can go under water. Mrs. Barrett - I see a group of men in an arctic setting. Two men are going into the sea and they may be checking the wildlife or taking samples of water from below. They must be going under for a while because they have a lot of oxygen strapped to them. This is occurring in Europe and it must be an army directive. We wonder how they got there, what are they doing, what is the reason they are there, and we wonder what they'll find.
Ms. Hill's 5th Grade Class (Burlington, NC)
• What is going on in this picture? We can infer that two people possibly from Finland and Norway are about to take a journey underwater and are being helped by military workers. • What do you see that makes you say that? We have inferred this due to a few reasons: 1. The stuff they're wearing (wetsuits and scuba gear for breathing underwater), 2. The hole has water in it, and their feet are in the water, and 3. The flags on the men's uniforms are Norwegian and Finland. • What more can you find? We KNOW that this is happening in a TUNDRA biome (it is frozen over and there is snow). These guys may find seals, polar bears, penguins, sharks, and killer whales. (also maybe Walruses)!
Jack Spillane (Poway, San Diego)
I think that in this picture there are the top military diving experts from Norway and Finland. I say these countries because two of the men in the patterned green suits have the Norwegian and Finnish flags. Normally military forces in snowy areas will wear white uniforms in order to blend in with their surroundings, with no trees in view I find it very odd to see the green camo. On each of the shoulders of the two men either side of the man in black they have a patch on one of their shoulders, one patch being the Finnish flag, and the other being the Norwegian flag. This is possibly being held in Northern Norway because the nearest neighboring open ocean between Finland and Norway is on the Northwestern piece of Norway. I think that the divers are going underwater to go through training required to become a part of the military forces. They could also be diving in order to document life underneath the freezing tundra. They also could be fixing some military equipment. Maybe there’s a sunken submarine under the sub-zero water or it could be underwater mines that need a check up. They have the knives to cut through pieces of coral or to protect themselves from any predators, although the chances of finding life under this water capable of injuring them is unlikely, or to cut through the surface of the ice. I think this picture was taken early in the month of May 2019. This is clearly a controlled dive with all safety precautions being available.
Andrew (Poway)
It looks like Norway and Finland have one diver each going underwater to either investigate something wrong or to try to find something underwater. The people seem to be in the middle of a frozen portion of the sea north of Norway and Finland. This seems to be from late 2018 to early 2019 when this picture was taken based on the gear the divers had and the climate in that area.
Nik (CA)
The Finish army is doing some sort of exercise or mission under the ice with the Norwegian army. It is very dark under the water and they are going in deep so they tied some rope around each other. Something is floating in the water (bottom left of hole) which looks like a camera or some kind of device. There are long tubes that are connected to the divers which again, indicates that they will most likely be going quite deep.
Alicia (Poway)
It looks like there are military personnel hooking up two of their guys to go underwater, to take a video of something. I say video because on the right side there is a go-pro attached to a stick. I think this took place recently because of the high quality picture taken, I'm guessing 2019. This was probably taken somewhere in Finland or Norway or maybe on the border of the two. I think it is Norway or Finland because the flags that are on patches on the sides of the officers.
Michael Samudio (Abraxas)
I see people dressed up in camoflauge suits, in a snowy climate. They look like they are about to dive in the water below the ice, because they are wearing scuba gear, holding knives, and are tied together.
fumiya (poway)
A group of European military scientists are getting ready to explore under the ice caps into the dark water. they seem to be armed with a knife and a life support rope.
Brighton Launch (Toronto, Canada)
The students of Brighton Launch think the photograph was taken in Sweden. It is a team of military and rescue workers who are searching for the remains of a boat or plane. It was a big disaster.
Vaughn (Earth)
The flags of Norway and Finland as well as the polar bear badge might indicate this is some animal reserve doing an underwater exploration, possibly with hopes of documenting wildlife under ice. It also may be training instead as there isn't a large portion of equipment nearby for a full scale operation.
Jeremy (Korea)
I think that judging by their clothing, I think that they are in the Scandinavian regions. I think the men with the water gear are going down under the water to test out various equipment. We can see a lot of cords and ropes attached to the different parts of the suit. The suits they have on are quite different and judging by the people helping them, one might be a Norwegian suit and the other might be from Finland.
Bill (South Korea)
I think that in this picture the military people are trying to search something under the water. On the left bottom corner of the image, I do not know what is it but I think that it is a camera.
leed (South Korea)
It seems like the divers are trying to enter into the water in order to do some investigations underwater. They are supported by soldiers, so it seems like this is an important, dangerous mission.
Alex (Canada)
In this picture, there are men working in the military in Finland and I suppose that they are practicing their training during the winter. I see that some of the men look older so I automatically think that they would be a higher rank so that the scuba divers have an order and know what to do. I see that one of the solider is wearing a different type of uniform ( The one in the black) it looks like he is apart of the Navy and he is helping the army soldiers.
Monica (Suwon, Korea)
Appears to show military training because of the outfits; however, the men are from different countries, as shown with the Norwegian flag on one man's coat, and a Finnish flag on the other (SUOMI!). Most probably general training for scuba diving in cold water, as deduced from the ice.
Francis Lee (South Korea)
This picture shows I think what appears to be some sort of military training in Europe. There are finland and norway flags on the sides of the camaflouge coats of some people. But it appears to be dive training
Andrew (canada)
I THINK THEY ARE LOOKING FOR A SEA PROBE IN THE WATER AND THEY ARE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT IF THEY CAN RESCUE PEOPLE FROM DANGER
Castleun (South Korea)
It looks like two people are doing dive training in Norway.
INS d'Auro (Santpedor (Spain))
Finnish military divers are about to dive under the ice to try to find a German submarine from World War II.
Izz (Riverside, California)
This picture appears to portray some form of military diving in a snowy area. This could be some form of training as there does not appear to be any emergency vehicles. If this is a training, it offers a good insight on what is required for this kind of diving.
Peyton, Tati, Casper (Vancouver Washington)
We think they cut the ice to see different species of fish because there are to people in scuba diver gear and the guy to the left is holding a rope. Also, we think they are training to go into cold waters so they can find different species of fish later in the future. we also think they might be going under water and they are from Norway because of the flags on there suits and are trying to look for special items that have been lost.
Sophia and Eban (Vancouver, Washington)
We think that underwater biologists are going in the Artic Ocean to research the environment to make sure it's healthy. Or to find new species.
Samir Minaya (Bronx)
In this picture it seems as if 2 men are getting suited for scuba diving with special equipment in order to not freeze to death. This might be a military training, or gathering some sort of information from under the water in frozen areas and lakes. I said they are military man because of the camo clothing, and also the badges and the high tech equipment. also from the badges you can tell its finland. It also looks like they have done this multiple times and they have their feet in the water as they are trying to set up, and they don't look nervous.
Madison & Angala (Vancover Washingtion)
we think that they may be doing some kind of experiment on peoples body temperature or some thing of the sort. we think this because it looks as if they are not in any panic, there are two of them, and they look like they are preparing to hop into the water.
Charlotte and Jackson (Washington)
I think they are testing new technology because there are men powering the machine and other men using the machine.
Allison and Daniel (washington)
we think they are going to look for something because it look like they are going in the cold water and they have swimming stuff on.
desamarie, sherry (washinton)
we think some its military project because, we think we see some Russia army outfit, and they´ re like sending them underwater to like explore everywhere, were gussing.
Malakai and Gissell (Washington)
Malakai and I thought that they were going to go into the cold water to find something. We think this because they have suits on and their tied to some kind of rope so they dont get lost or something.
4th grade GT (Charleston, SC)
We think the men are going on an underwater expedition or experiment. They could be investigating climate change. The location is Scandinavia (Finland, Norway flags). They are wearing camo and we think they are military. There is a gopro which may be used as a tool. The yellow tubing is holding them together. The five men in the back are making sure the mission is successful.
Nery,jason (Washington)
me and jason think that the norway soldiers are experimenting the water tempature in the sea
Kenzie Mya the awesome (washington)
we think they are diving and are maybe marine bioligests
SJB Students (Ontario, Canada)
Exploring in a Lake A group or team of male soldiers who are possibly searching for something underwater are on a frozen lake. We think they are about to go in the water because they have a rope and scuba tanks. They also have a Go-Pro camera which makes us think that they are recording something while they are exploring under the water.
Ms. Boughen's Class (Kingston, Canada)
We also agree that this might be a global military project. Our first instincts was that Russia was involved in some way. We thought maybe the project had to do with climate change or a military training.
ELA (MA)
It is Winter. We see 2 men from the military going for a dive, possibly to rescue a person or something. This place in Antarctica.
3rd grade GT (Charleston, SC)
Two people are sitting next to a hole in the ice with water. Possibly a lake or sea. These two have scuba gear. The standing people are wearing camo which isn't matching so we think that means they are from different places. One of the places is Finland because of the flag on one guy's arm. We think they are military scientist working on climate. There is a gopro tool next to them, so maybe they are taking a video of their activities for science/experiment. THey could also be looking for a person under the ice.
Sandra (Australia)
I think this picture is in the Arctic Circle because we can see that there is a flag of Finland on the soldier‘s arm, and there is a flag of Norway on the other soldier's arm. We also can see ice around them. Two divers are preparing to get into the water, and they may be doing an experiment.
Jaewon Min (Suwon)
Finnish, Norwegian millitary troops are shown in Tuktoyaktuk, Canada, about 870 miles away from Resolute Bay, troops preparing to dive into the partly frozen Arctic Ocean. They are participating in military drills in the arctic which aim to counter Russia's influence.
JunHo Ahn (SuWon)
@Jaewon Min Very cool...!
Jaehong (South Korea)
Observing the picture, it seems that the Finnish governmental investigators are conducting a research or an investigation in a region. Knowing that Finland has extremely cold weather, it seems that the investigation is taking place within their territory. If this is not true, then I would assume that the event is taking place in the Arctic regions, where experts in different areas from all of over the globe to study different things.
JunHo Ahn (SuWon)
@Jaehong Very cool...!
Simon (France)
I think it's a group of military forces who did a training in the water to be able to help someone blocked in the ice and be able to resist this type of temperature.
Dear (Scotch colledge)
They are in Finland because of the badge I think the diver is trying to get something under the water.
Nesma (paris)
We see seven men who seem to be in the military. We can think this because of their uniform. We also see flags on it, (Norway and Finland) so it isn't a national military team. Maybe they are training to increase their physical abilities.
Int (Australia)
I think in this picture the army had sent 2 divers to research under the ice hole. They need to research under the water because they want to search for electricity.
Christina (AOSE)
In this picture, there are men in a very cold climate, 2 of which are about to go into the icy water. THey are also wearing camoflauge, not to hide them though, because in an environment covered in snow green camoflauge will not hide you from anything. You could say that these people could be in the army or military because of there camo, but I noticed that their camo do not math, so I think that they might be scientists, not having a strict uniform.Maybe inide the water they are going to get samples in the water of some sort, or searching for an organism.
SDlkfa (South Korea)
This is Tuktoyaktuk, Canada, several hundred miles away from Resolute Bay. These troops are preparing to dive into the Arctic Ocean. The reason for these joint operations carried our by NATO, is that the ice has continued to melt and Russian military presence in the Arctic is increasing. These soldiers are among the member countries of France, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Canada, including reservists and rangers of the areas.
Kevin (suwon)
It seems like a group of soldiers are sending two of their members to investigate things underwater of a very cold place. Since two of them are wearing different clothes than others, I think the two people who are sitting are the ones who are being sent off for the investigation. Others are preparing them for the search by helping them get ready.
Ryan (South Korea)
@Kevin I agree with your thoughts from the picture. One thing I would like to add is to be more detailed like where are they from?
Kevin (suwon)
It seems like a group of soldiers are sending two of their members to investigate things underwater of a very cold place. Since two of them are wearing different clothes than others, I think the two people who are sitting are the ones who are being sent off for the investigation. Others are preparing them for the search by helping them get ready.
Mymy (France)
For me,The men in this photo may be in the military. We can think that because most of the men are wearing a camouflage military uniform with the flag of Norway and the flag of Finland. We can see 2 men who are getting ready to dive to explore the arctic conditions or maybe it's a military training.
Romane (France)
Those men are soldiers of different countries, they are going hunting under ice. we can see that they are soldiers beacause they are wearing a uniform. I think the two people who are wearing a suit and oxygen bottles are going to dive in the icy water to find a mysterious animal. I think it's in Finland or in Norway beacause there are flags.
Maelys (France)
I think it's a military training in extreme conditions which takes place in the Netherlands because we can see the two flags on the soldiers' arms and also they are on ice. This is a military training because they are wearing camos and the two men in black have knives.
Juliette (France)
Those men are military, they wear military uniform. I think that this scene happened in the north of Europe beacause some of them have a flag of Norway and Finland. The two men who go diving may be military, researchers or scientists. They are going to search for a dangerous object fallen in the water.
Robin Cha (South Korea)
The researchers from Finland are preparing for an investigation in the ocean. Using their new technology, they are trying to measure the temperature of water to investigate the effect of Global Warming.
Sam O (South Korea)
It appears that the Norwegians and the Finns are sending in divers to investigate life under the water, apparently in the winter. Considering the huge amount of ice and snow that surrounds the area, the temperature must be significantly under the freezing point. Their oxygen masks show that they are likely going somewhat deep into the ocean.
Colombe (Normandie)
I think that it's an expedition in nordic countries in Europa, since there is the flag of Finland et the flag of Norway. I think that the mens on the picture are military mens. But i don't know why they are doing diving, maybe for research.
Sam Lee (south korea)
It's military drills in the Arctic to Aim Counter Russia. In Tuktoyaktuk, Canada, about 870 miles away from Resolute Bay, troops preparing to dive into the partly frozen Arctic Ocean.
MAN (NK)
In this picture, there are Finland Soldiers are spying the deep sea in the arctic ocean area.
Colin (Korea, Republic of)
I see snow and ice around people with white sky. The location seems to be in Arctic. There are people with thick military color clothes and two people with diving suits. According to the picture, they are about to dive and others are helping the two men prepare diving in.
Mrs Berg's class (Hell, Norway)
Men from the military forces are preparing scuba diving in ice cold water. Maybe they are going to find something/someone in the water. Maybe they're checking the ice level or want to see if there is plastic/trash in the water. Perhaps they are going to take a water sample or testing military suits and equipment. We think it is a camera on the stick. It is winter and we think this practise is taking place in Svalbard in Norway or Finland. This is an international cooperation. We can see these flags on their suits. It could be a picture from the Nato practise in 2018: Trident Juncture. They are using oxygen masks. The diver does'nt look happy. The person in black is mysterious.
Adele (Val de reuil)
There is a Finland and Norvegian military team with suits and lines of oxygen. they are going to dive in the ocean through an ice hole. I an think of two posibilities: -Maybe it's a military training. - or maybe it's to discover something, a wreck or animals.
Fio (val de reuil)
So for me, it's an operation organised with some country, like at the right Finland, and at the left, Norway. I think it's an orgasination for the guiness World record, with two equip, the finland against the Norway, maybe it's a deep water record or, a cold water record, i don't really know.
Moha dla GB (27100)
This is two Norwegian and Finlandian military who helping two diver to make an scientific underwater expedition. SNG
Crabman101 (Jaewon Min)
Finnish divers are getting ready to dive down under the ice. They are king crab fishermen and the month of may is the last month of king crab season. The Finnish military is helping these divers out because they also want to taste some fresh king crabs.
Helen (Suwon)
It appears to be a group of Norwegian military forces helping two men who are about to dive into the water for further research and investigation. Long lines and huge oxygen tank reveals that the investigation will take a while.
slade (new zealand)
The Soviet spies are getting ready to dive down into the icy water to enter the submarine that they had kitted out with the newest technology of newfound cloaking device to enter the American waters and to use state of the art listening technology.
Mia (New Zealand)
Soldiers, lots of them, in heavy camo coats and pants. I sat on the cold metal bars in the snow. I was about to enter the cold aqua world of the artic seas. My mission was to look for old tanks from world war 2. The solider closest to me was checking my gear making sure there was oxygen in my tank.
Eugene J (South Korea)
The photo shows divers from different European countries. Since they are wearing camo, the divers might be hunters or part of the military. The photo seems to portray a joint effort since different countries are working together for this expedition. The mystery men are preparing two divers to plunge into icy cold water. Their scuba tanks are connected to something in the plastic pin. The men are wearing some kind of blue badge. The badge design seems to have a white polar bear, which might signal these men are part of a nature expedition or research project.
Nicole (Moon)
It is obvious that the weather is cold and there are two people who are trained in swimming who will go underwater for a good cause, I believe. Maybe for scientific research or to test out the new suit they created. The guy on the right side has a flag of Finland on his shoulder and the guy on the left side has a flag of Norway which tells something about their nationality. They are all wearing something that looks professional and none of them are smiling or laughing which brings a serious mood to this situation.
Christina (AOSE)
@Nicole DO you think that their suits would have been tested beforehand? Wouldn't it be a bit dangerous to actually go into the icy ocean without ever testing a suit? I also agree, these men must be wll trained in swimming.
Grace (aose)
This seems to be a military expedition where soldiers are exploring arctic conditions. There is snow covering the ground and they are standing on ice. There are two men getting prepared to dive into the square cut in the ice. into the water. I say this because they are wearing scuba gear. To continue, this seems to be some type of military mission because they the men helping the divers prepare are in camouflage. This is a major way to distinguish a soldier. I do not think this mission has to do with fighting because the soldiers have patches of different countries, and they seem to be working together rather than fighting. They are in an icy, arctic area where their camo uniforms would not be of much use which further explains the point. This was taken in the present day because of the advanced scuba technology and the quality of the picture.
Gohoon (Suwon)
I think the picture is about exploring Nordic oceans as I see ice and snow all over the place. This is because the person who is putting a goggle on one of the diver is barehand, meaning it cannot be areas like Antarctica. Also, I think this is not some sort of wildlife exploration since the people in the photo are appeared as soldiers or any type of military workers. Because they cut the ice layer that is frozen on the surface of the water in order to dive in, I think the water is cold and the divers are dressed in thick and tight diving suits. Furthermore, I see some devices behind them in a suitcase which I predict them to be either GPS or cameras that they can see through the divers' perspectives.
Christina (AOSE)
@Gohoon due to the cold temperatures, it could be a place like the Nordic Oceans, but what else could lead you to that place?
Rachel (AOSE)
This appears to be a joint forces expedition between at least four distinct countries. Two of these countries are Norway and Finland. These are the only two countries that can be positively identified because the man second from the left in the back row has the Norwegian flag on his sleeve, while the man second from the right in the same row has a Finnish flag. The camouflage patterns on the uniforms of four men are all radically different. Each country has its own distinct pattern for jungle, desert and snow camouflage. The fact that these men are in jungle camouflage rather than snow leads me to believe that this is less of a war situation and more of a research situation. Based on the thickness of the wetsuits that two of the men are wearing I think it would be safe to say that the waters are extremely cold.
Sadie P (California)
It appears as though two men are preparing to go swimming under the ice, possibly for scientific research. It is clearly very cold, based on the ice and how they are dressed. They appear to be with the military (the men in camo), probably for protection and it looks like there is a Norwegian flag on one man's sleave, so they may be with the Norwegian military.
Alison (Riverside)
This photo shows military men preparing two of their men for their icy, freezing water mission. You can tell that it is freezing due to the way their are dressed for the weather and that the diver's suits are different to the normal diver's suits.
Michael (riverside)
I looked like they are NAVY SEALS and they are rookies in training and practicing swimming in cold water and seeing hoe It is as a NAVY SEAL
Brian (South Korea)
@Michael I agree to your thoughts as the Navy seals is a part of the US navy and they deal with land and water terrain though looking at the patches below the country flag you can see a patch that doesn't belong to the military as the danish men and the men in the black jacket both have the same blue patch so I believe this is not a military operation but more of a expedition or either a hot fix to equipment under water.

Portland Jewish Academy 5th Grade: Gabe- I think in an icy snowing place military soldiers are setting up oxygen tanks on other soldiers, so they can go under the icy water and do some sort of mission. I think that because the soldiers feet are in the water and they have scuba diving stuff on. I know the other people are in some sort of military because of the stuff that they are wearing. You can see on the side tools to break the ice in that certain place, so they must be in that spot for a reason. Max-I think that they are scubadiving the reason why I think that is because they have that gear on and there is also a small pool of water that is below there feat and They also have oxygen tanks on and they have heavy gear on and they are obviously in the military I think that they are looking of something so that is why they are in the water Lily- I think the people are in an army facility. I think they are trying to either investigate or something under the water. The two men in front are going under, and the other men are gearing them up to go. Sunny-The Norwegian armed forces are retrieving or exploring something or someone that is not that deep by the looks of the air tanks Daniel - I think that they are finding something under the water because you can see they have a suit and an oxygen
Grace R (AOSE)
This picture shows a group of men in a cold, icy, tundra environment. Because of the cold environment, they are wearing heavy clothes, like hats and gloves. They seem to be from the military as they are wearing green camouflage and some have badges on their jackets. The men in the background are helping 2 divers with their gear. A square hole had been cut into the ice, which is where they will enter the water. I can tell they are divers because they are wearing diving masks and have air tubes. I can also tell they have not been into the water because their gear is not wet. They are probably going to be doing research or practicing cold-water dives. They might be researching the ecosystems under the ice or some type of resource that could be useful to them. They could also be training for dives in the future. Or, they could also be looking for something under the water, like a lost tool or piece of gear or a body.
Emma (AOSE)
The men that appear in this photo may be associated with the military. We can draw this conclusion because most of the men are wearing a camouflage military uniform. Wherever these men are, they are likely there for some type of military venture. There are also men in thick diving suits, wearing masks leading into a bin off to the side, meaning they could be wearing some kind of oxygen mask that gives them air under the water. They could be running some kind of underwater training, or they could be retrieving an important object from under the ice. There appears to be some kind of flashlight on one of the diver's wrists, and there appears to be some kind of tool to chip at the ice, so they may also be diving to chip something out of the ice.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles)
@Emma Thank you for your comment! You are touching on some ideas that were set out earlier in this conversation. You are agreeing that their attire could be a military uniform. You also believe that this is some type of training. What do you see that makes you say it is a training as opposed to something else?
Erin (AOSE)
This looks like the military in Finland, because of the snow and icy water, and the flag of Finland on the man's shoulder. They may be on a mission to recover something, or someone from in the water under the ice. I know because the men are preparing 2 men to go underwater with heavy clothing, a leather, masks, and oxygen tanks. This looks to be the military in Finland because of their clothing, but they are most likely not in a time of war because their camouflage does not match their surroundings. If they were in any danger, they most likely would be wearing white to blend into the snow.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles)
@Erin Thank you for your comment! Similar to other people, you believe that they are going underwater to save someone or go on a mission. You also notice that their camouflage does not really disguise them in their suroundings. What more can you find?
Rachel (AOSE)
@Erin Do you think that all of these men are Finnish?
Olivia M (AOSE)
In this picture, I️ see seven men, four who are wearing military camouflage uniforms. The other three are wearing black uniforms and all seem to be clothed heavily because the environment is cold and harsh, which we can tell from the ice in the background. I️ think that these men are members of the military, and I️ think that the two men in the front are preparing to submerge under the icy water, for their legs are underwater and they are wearing masks. There is also a yellow tube that the two men are holding, which I️ believe is oxygen so that they are able to breathe underwater. I️ can also see that one of the man has a patch of the Finland flag which leads me to believe that this is where this picture was taken. I️ think that the men drilled through the ice to complete some sort of military service. I️ think this because the man all the way to the left had noise cancelling headphones which leads me to believe that they drilled through the ice to get to the water underneath. I️ think that these men are members of the military and are setting up for a mission while others are helping them suit up.
Ava (AOSE)
This picture shows two divers about to go into the ocean, underneath an iceberg. There are other men standing around the divers, helping them with their equipment. Three of the men surrounding the divers are wearing camouflage, which leads me to believe that the group in the picture are from the military. If the people are from the military, then the divers are going underwater maybe to investigate some wreckage left from a former expedition or to scope out another country's submarine or underwater equipment. Going under the ice can be pretty dangerous, so the divers are connected to long chords so that they can be pulled up if they are moved along by the current. This picture was probably taken in an icy area like Antarctica, Alaska, or maybe even Greenland.
Sebastian (Nipomo)
In this picture, I see 7 men, 2 wearing scuba gear connected to a oxygen tank. Or the men wearing scuba gear going crab hunting in Alaska or Finland from one the men wearing a flag on his shoulder. Or treasure hunt that they think it's in Finland, underwater.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles)
@Sebastian Thank you for sharing! You are really intrigued with what they might find in the water. For you, this is an image of people going hunting for something that could be a treasure or crab hunt. What do you see that makes you say it could be treasure that they are looking for?
Amber (newport)
going diving in ice water gloves in snow there are wires, rubber stuff and they look professional
Danielle (New Hampshire)
I see 7 men in either black or camo, 2 of the 7 men are suiting up to go scuba diving with metal detectors and other gear. On some of the outfits there is a Finland flag showing us that the men are in Finland. The other 5 men look like they're there to study whatever they find underwater, like scientists.
Isha G (AOSE)
This photo is taken somewhere in Artic region of Europe such as Finland or Norway. This is because the men are caucasian and two of them have patches of Artic/cold european countries. The climate of the area is very cold. There is snow and the men are wearing thick pants and jackets, hats and boots. There appears to be two divers who are ready to go diving into the water. They have a lot of tubes attached to them. These tubes could have oxygen in them, so that the divers can go underwater for a prolonged period. The men could be going underwater to find something or look for something underwater. The photo does not provide much context as to what they are looking for underwater. The men are probaly in the military but come from different countries, as one has a patch for Norway on their jacket, and the other has Finland.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles)
@Isha G Thank you for sharing! You are trying to geographically locate this place and based off of your knowledge you consider this the arctic or a cold European country. As you are looking at their clothing, you are also noticing small details that could inform us on where these men are from specifically: Norway and Finland. You seem interested in what is happening but are finding it difficult to completely understand because of the lack of context. What more can you find?
brayden (Newport NH)
There are some finnish men in scuba suits, and they are going into the icey water.
Grace R (AOSE)
@brayden What leads you to believe these men are Finnish?
kammy (new hampshire)
guys scuba diving in ice cold water looks like military with masks on
Ava (AOSE)
@kammy What in the picture leads you to make these claims? Why do you think the men are scuba diving?
Emma (AOSE)
@kammy Why are they diving? Are they looking for something?
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles)
@kammy Thank you for your comment! You are noticing the water and observing that it seems as though it would be very cold. You are also noticing the men and you think they might be scuba diving. @Ava and I both are wondering, what do you see that makes you say they are scuba diving?
Hannah K. (AOSE)
In this picture, I see some men securing a mask on the face of two men, possibly as a way for the two men to receive a constant supply of oxygen, since they appear to be about to go underwater. The two men sitting are wearing thick water resistant suits, along with thick boots, and thick gloves. They are wearing these thick clothes because they appear to be in a very cold location since there is snow in the surrounding area. In addition, it appears that the men are going to be released underwater, which is why they are wearing that type of clothing, in order to maintain some heat. The surrounding men have camouflage clothing that resembles military clothing. However, the clothing stands out and does not blend in with the environment. However, camouflage is supposed to blend in with the environment. Therefore, the men might be wearing this clothing so that any surrounding people will know that they are doing the actions they are about to perform for military reasons and that they are in that specific location for military reasons.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles)
@Hannah K. Thank you for sharing! You are noticing the cold and icy environment that surrounds the figures. You are being very critical of their attire or uniform and you believe that if they indeed were supposed to be camouflaged that might not be the best outfit considering their location and surroundings. Your conclusion is that this might be some type of military venture. What more can you find?
David (sms)
In this picture it shows navy seals going in the water to get them prepared for cold water missions. Im sure thats what it is or something like that because people do it as a challenge on YouTube. They do it in frozen ponds and lakes. They could also be rookies and training.
Isha G (AOSE)
what tells you that these people are navy seals?
Ava (AOSE)
@David Interesting ideas. How do you know that the people in this picture are navy seals? What details do you see in the picture that can support your claims?
David (sms)

@David Thank you for sharing! You are comparing this to a challenge you have seen before on YouTube. What do you see that makes you say that they are training?
Julia (SMS)
It looks like the men are helping the other men in the scuba diving gear get ready to go into the freezing cold water. It looks like their in the army because the other men that are helping are wearing clothes that look like their are army clothes.
Ava (AOSE)
@Julia Good answer. Try and use direct evidence from the picture to back up your claims. Why do you think the men are going scuba diving?
Erin (AOSE)
@Julia Good observations. Why do you think the men are going into the icy water?
Alexis (sms)
i think there just having a dive team in there or there just going in training for the dive team.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles)
@Alexis Thank you for sharing! You have a very different opinion in comparison to the comments stated previously, you think that this is simply a diving team that is in training. What do you see that makes you say they are training?
Grant (SMS)
This picture looks like these guys are getting scuba gear on and they are about to go into that water. They look from Antartica or Canada mostly Canada because of their beards and I know that canadians look like that. These 2 males are about to go into a ice lake and are putting warm clothes on under their gear because its black water so that must be it is frozen.
ethan (sms)
Mabye they are putting the masks on to go underwater to get something and I just relized they are on Ice and they found water so they are putting there gear on to go underwater.
Emma (AOSE)
@ethan Can you infer anything else? What kinds of clothes are the men wearing that can give clues about why they're diving?
ethan (sms)
Mabye they are putting the masks on to go underwater to get something and I just relized they are on Ice and they found water so they are putting there gear on to go underwater.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles)
@ethan Thank you for sharing! You are interested in the gear that they are wearing; it might be specific to cold underwater experiences. You mentioned that they "found water". What do you see that makes you say that?
jamie (sms:)
i thank its three guy going swimming in cold freezing water scopa guys are going deep other guy have beards to keep them warm
Brynna (SMS)
I think that they're going underwater and going to catch fish or find things. Because there is a hole cut like they do in ice where they cut holes to catch fish. And they have on scuba diving suits too look or catch things.
Isha G (AOSE)
@Brynna what else tells you that they might be going fishing. do they have any other equipment that might tell you that they are fishing or otherwise?
Madison (sms)
I think that someone fell in and they are going to save them and they are warming him up and giving him oxygen. I think this because they are army men and I know army people like to save people.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles)
@Madison Thank you for your comment! It sounds like you building a story that corresponds to the image and it may not be what is happening at this moment. You believe that someone may have fallen into the water because of this there are two men are getting ready to go in to save him. You are also noticing that they look like military personnel. What do you see that makes you say that someone fell in?
Madison (sms)
I think that someone fell in and they are going to save them and they are warming him up and giving him oxygen. I think this because they are army men and I know army people like to save people.
Grace R (AOSE)
@Madison I agree that these men are divers. What makes you say they are in the military.
Arca (New Jersey)
In this picture, I see several men standing on the top of a snowy mountain. This is evident due to the fog around them, the snow, the clothing they are wearing, and the fact that the people in the center appear to be wearing pressure masks (due to their high altitude, possibly). They are sticking their legs into a water hole, so they might be going scuba diving as some sort of underwater mission or scientific experiment. I see men wearing camouflage (which isn't very helpful in their white environment), which suggests that they might be involved with some sort of military.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles)
Hi @Arca, thanks for sharing your ideas with us! You're noticing many different aspects of the environment such as the snow and fog, and think that they could be on a mountain. What did you see that made you say that? You also noticed the stark contrast between the camo apparel and the environment, and the irony of it. What more can you find?
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles)
There have been so many diverse ideas so far on what the two seated figures might be doing next. While many agree that they will be diving into the water, the purpose of their anticipated dive has many different hypotheses. @Claire thinks they might be looking for something or saving animals, such as a polar bear, and @gabe also thinks they could be saving an animal. @Bella T. wonders if they are testing equipment, while @mallory thinks they are testing the water. @CONNOR suggested they might be conducting military training or learning more about wildlife. @Emily posed that they might be practicing diving, gathering information, or even looking for a dead body. What do you think is going on in this image? Let's keep looking!
ELA (MA)
We see 2 divers that could be part of a military operation. We think that they are either in the Arctic Circle or Antarctica. Perhaps they are diving down to find something that they lost.
Rylee (sms)
I see a couple people that are standing beside a hole of ice cold water surrounded by ice clusters. there are also two men in scuba gear and look like they're about to dive in the water, possibly looking for something. Are these people at this frigid area for a job or for a scavenger hunt? I believe they're there for job.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles)

This picture shows military people helping putting masks to their teammates and are going underwater. It looks like they might be in antartica or some other cold climate place. My question is, why are they doing this?
Landin (Colorado)
I know that it is in Finland and I think that it is a scooba diver and that he is about to go into the ocean that is frozen over for research for whatever he works for.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles)
Good morning @Landin! What did you see that made you say this is set in Finland? That this frozen area is the ocean? Tell us more about your ideas on location in this image!
Mackenzie (SMS)
I think that they are going under freezing water to get a bomb under there form a long time ago. And they are wearing that because they have to use special tools that only someone in a army can wear. I say that because they are using weird looking tools.

in this picture i see a toolbox, gloves, people, water, ice, mats, military people. i think that they are going down to test the water and see if they need to move animals or it might be something to see if there is a problem under the ice or they are seeing under the ice to see if the ice is unstable
Cat (Newport NH)
@mallory I think that your right.Cause that is what I was thinking. Our responses are similar.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles)
Hi @mallory and @Cat! It's great to see the image discussion extend into conversations between participants. @Cat what specifically did you agree with from @mallory? @mallory what did you see that made you say that they might be testing the water? That there might be a problem beneath the ice? That the ice might be unstable? Remember to provide visual evidence for your ideas -- there are lots of possibilities! Keep looking, thinking, writing and remembering to provide your evidence.
Emily (Newport NH)
What I see in this picture is people in military uniforms, maybe someone from Norway and maybe someone from Finland, snow, water, scuba divers, scuba diving gear and technological scuba diving gear. What I think is going on in maybe the people from Norway and Finland are having divers get information on something under the water or they could possibly be doing practice dives or someone has drowned and are now going to search for the body.
Mrs. Slevin's Class (Chantilly, VA)
We see seven men who seem to be in the military. We think this because of their uniform. We do not think they are in the Navy because we know Navy is blue camouflage, so we are wondering who would be diving in the water if they are not Navy. Are they from another county? We see a flag on one of the uniforms. For these two to go in the freezing water we think there must be something wrong - they are rescuing someone or something.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles)
Welcome to the image discussion @Mrs. Slevin's Class! Thanks all for your close looking and for sharing your interpretations and questions. Keep up the good work! What more can we find?
Bella.T (AOSE)
In this picture, there are a group of men in a polar region.Three of the men seem to be soldiers because of the camouflage suits they are wearing as well as the patches they have on their uniforms. One man has a patch of the Finland flag which leads to believe they are from Finland. The three soldiers seem to be suiting up two other men in scuba gear. These two men will be traveling under the ice in order to do some type of military service. There is a snowbank behind the men which leads me to believe that prior to this event, they shoveled back all of the snow. There is also a glove lying on the ground which probably belongs to one of the men suiting up the divers.
Mrs. Livingston 2nd Grade (Ohio)
Our class believes that these people are part of an Army. It appears that they are going into the cold water because there is a large part cut out of the ice. We also noticed that they are wearing scuba gear. One person believes that the yellow tubes are pumping warm air so that the people can stay warm and breathe under the cold water.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles)
Hello @Mrs. Livingston 2nd Grade! Let's hear more from your class. What did you see that made you say these individuals are part of the Army? That the ice was cut this way? That the yellow tubes provide warmth and oxygen to the divers? Root your findings in evidence from the image! Tell us more so we can follow along with you.
Julia M (AOSE)
In this picture, I see a group of people. 4 of them are wearing army camouflage, so I assume that they are in the army. The other three men might also be in the army. The man appears to be in a very cold area. They are all wearing coats, hats, and boots. There are ice and snow all around them. 2 of the people are in black clothes. They are sitting at the edge of a hole that has been cut in the ice. They are wearing helmets, and have lots of rope and wires attached to them. They are probably going to go into the water. The black suits are to protect them from the cold water. The masks are probably attached to oxygen tanks to help them breathe. Some of the other men are holding the ropes attached to the men who are going to dive, so the ropes are probably to make sure they don't go too far or get lost under the ice.
Claire (AOSE)
This picture is in Norway, the flag of Norway is on the sleeve of the men. These seven men are from an organization that works with polar bears because there is a polar bear on the badge. The two men in the front are preparing to dive into the icy water, I know this because there is a square cut in the ice and the men are in suits with masks that give them oxygen. The other men are preparing them. They could be going to look for gold or helping the polar bears(as there are polar bears on their badges). There is a rope tied to the men to pull them up to the surface and keep track of them. The men also have what seems to be a knife attached to their leg to help them in danger. Lastly, they could be studying animals in the water, because there is a camera on the ground to the right. They could be recording the animal to watch back and study the animals. These men are a part of an organization and are trying to save animals or find something in the water.
Bella.T (AOSE)
In this picture, there are a group of men in a polar region. The men seem to be soldiers because of the camouflage suits they are wearing as well as the patches they have on their uniforms. One man has a patch of the Finland flag which leads to believe they are from Finland. The three soldiers seem to be suiting up two other men in scuba gear. These two men will be traveling under the ice in order to perform some type of military service or possibly test out equipment. There is a snowbank behind the men which leads me to believe that prior to this event, they shoveled back all of the snow. There is also a glove lying on the ground which probably belongs to one of the men suiting up the divers. The yellow tubes that are connected to the oxygen tank, which provides the divers with air.
hailey (newport)
I see people i think that they are in navy seal and there placing bomb or something in the water for their enemy or they could be in the army but i don't know why they would be in the water. It looks like they are in Antarctica.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles)
@hailey remember to provide evidence for your ideas. What do you see that makes you say that?
nathan (Watertown)
I see people in the military using scuba equipment in the ice, they are about to go under the water.
Hannah K. (AOSE)
@nathan Why do you think the military people are about to go underwater?
Julia (Boston)
I see people dressed in winter gear, ice, scuba gear, tools I think that they are experiencing/testing something
kim (Boston)
I see Ice and I think this people are in the antarctic and they are going under the ice water.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles)
@kim you're noticing the setting. What do you see that makes you say they are in the Antarctic specifically?
CONNOR (newport new hampshire nmhs)
I see like 2 people with scuba gear on and water/ice and they are like surounded by military people I think that these people are doing some type of navy seal training or they are searching for some type of creature or maybe learning about wild life I thing that these people are from switserland by looking at there military tag /patch.
Erin (AOSE)
@CONNOR Good observations and ideas about navy seal training. What did you see that made you say this?
gabe (newport new hampshire nmhs)
I see ice, people, coats, boats, water, scuba gear, matts, tubs, snow. I think that these people are is antarctica and they are going to go underwater to free a animal.

Good morning everyone! Welcome to the final image discussion on "What's Going On in This Picture?" for the 2018-2019 school year! It's so great to individuals and classrooms from all over the US and beyond participating. Remember to look closely, consider the ideas of others, and provide evidence from the image! You can also continue the conversation with your peers by replying directly to their comments. What's going on in this picture?
Brandon (IS228)
I see lots of snow and people who are going to scuba dive. I also see people in military uniforms. The people sitting in the water have oxygen masks on and thats why i think that they are scuba divers. There are also black things on the floor so that the people wont slip. I can find out what kinds of things live in the water that they will be swimming in.
Mrs. Allen's 2nd Grade (Ohio)
We noticed that there are men in military uniforms helping hook two divers up to what we think is oxygen. We think the two men are divers because they had on oxygen masks and they were wearing wet suits. We also noticed that there is water under the ice which makes us think that they may be on an iceberg. There are mats around the hole to keep them from slipping into the cold water unexpectedly. We think they might be diving to help some animals, but we can't be sure.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles)
Hello @Mrs. Allen's 2nd Grade class! You all are assessing the situation and trying to figure out who these people are and what they are doing here. One idea you had is that these are military men and divers. What did you see that made you say these might be military uniforms? What did you see that made you say they are potentially helping some animals?
Farid (NYC)
I see people putting on mask I see a lot of snow, I think that people that has the mask are going down in the water because they look like they are scuba diving. I think they could be doing this due to military reason.
Julia M (AOSE)
@Farid What makes you think it is a military reason? Where do you think they are?
Dixa (NYC)
These 2 men are scuba divers, may be they are getting ready to dive in the freezing cold water to find something may be because they have cameras with them. These soldiers are from different parts of Europe. It can be seen from flags of the soldiers jacket.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles)
Hi @Dixa! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this image. You're noticing that these scuba divers might have a camera, which could indicate that they are looking for something. You're also looking at the markings on the clothing of the standing individuals and think that this can help place where they are from -- potentially somewhere in Europe. Keep it up! What more can we find?
Wasiqul H (New York City)
I see military officers from both Finland and Norway and two of the officers are preparing themselves for SCUBA diving in an icy area perhaps in the arctic circle as they are on the SCUBA gear. The divers maybe going on a expedition with a camera to observe something or for a purpose.
Claire (AOSE)
@Wasiqul H What tells you they are military officers? Why might they be scuba diving? What tells you they are in the Arctic circle?
junia (mvb)
on this picture i see a lot of military and i see they putting mask and they have a lot of snow, the people who have the mask i think they are going on the scuba.
Grace (aose)
@junia What about this picture makes you think they were the military?
dilawar (mvb)
i see scuba divers and who is going under water. also i see military man how is helping scuba diver to go under neth water.
Esther (NYC)
I see four of them are in camouflage gear, one is in a black suit, and two men are in diving gear. This super cold place may be Alaska. they see that maybe they are from different countries, maybe they are doing research on climate change.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles)
@Esther welcome to the image discussion! You're noticing the apparel of the figures in this image and thinking about place. What did you see that made you say they might be in Alaska? That they are from different countries? That they might be researching climate change? Let's hear more from you and remember to provide evidence for your findings!
Ashudeep singh (mvb)
Maybe the two people are army and they are going inside the water so how they survive inside the water
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles)
Tell us more @Ashudeep singh. What did you see that made you say they are looking into survival techniques for this type of setting? What more can we find?
claunisei (Mvb)
I see people putting on mask I see a lot of snow, I think that the people that has the mask on are going down in the water what makes me say that is because i see them with a breathing mask so that makes me think that they are going in the water,in this picture they look like they are scuba diving.
Ava and Monti (Palermo, Italia)
In this picture, there is a group of people in the middle of an icy area. Two of them seem to be in scuba gear, while there are five other men around them in camo outfits. We noticed that two of men in the camo outfits have patches of two Scandinavian countries, such as Norway and Finland. We don't know where exactly they are, but they are definitely in a Scandinavian country. We also believe they are scuba divers since the two people in the scuba gear (with wetsuits and oxygen masks) are sitting above a plot of water, and are going to dive in. We think they could be doing this due to military reasons.
Jacobius and Oliveritulum (Basel, Switzerland)
These men appear to be soldiers due to their camo uniforms and patches. One man has a Finnish flag so it is likely they are from Finland. They have ice diving gear, being their dry suits, scuba masks and air tanks. They are are probably looking for something specific because they have cut a whole in a specific location away from the shore. They all could be from different militaries because they have different camo designs and another soldier has a Norwegian flag.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles)
Hi @Jacobius and Oliveritulum! Thanks for sharing your detailed observations and inferences on these people, where they might be from, and what they are doing. What did you see that made you say this hole was cut in a specific location? That they are far from shore? Keep up the good work!
Indraneel and Felix (Basel, Switzerland)
These people appear to be part of the military forces of Norway and Finland (as indicated by the flags on their uniforms). The two people wearing black suits in the front are most probably divers; they are being made ready to get into the cold water below the ice. Judging from the thickness of the ice layer, this place is probably somewhere far north, maybe close to Norway. The divers could be going down into the water to set up equipment/collect data from equipment that's already present or retrieve something.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles)
@Indraneel and Felix great examples of evidentiary reasoning. Keep it up!
Lola and Alice (Switzerland)
In this picture we can see that they are in a cold country such as Greenland or in a Scandinavian country based on the ice and snow in the background and the clothes they are wearing. We can see a Finnish flag on one of the military uniform they are wearing. We believe that this is some sort of military or scientific experiment, where they need to dive underwater. This is because, the divers are wearing professional equipment that looks like it is made for cold waters.
Jordan and Paul (Basel, Switzerland)
This seems to be somewhere in the northwest passage (maybe around Tuktoyaktuk) . There are Canadian international's divers (assumed by badges on their arms), working with Finnish and Norwegian divers. This means it could be NATO. The reason for this practice could be in order to improve their cold weather skills, and ice diving skills. These skills are useful when repairing broken underwater infrastructure.
Siddharth and Salma (Basel)
They are probably are saving an animal such as Polo Bear which may have fallen in the lake. The photo was taken at Finland because one of the of the soldiers has a Finnish flag . There are 2 scuba gear, which are going in the river to save an animal.
Bella.T (AOSE)
@Siddharth and Salma Why do you believe they are going to save an animal? What are the jobs of these men?
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles)
Hello @Siddarth and Salma! You're considering several aspects of this image -- where this is located and what they might be doing there. You mentioned two types of bodies of water, a lake and a river. What did you see that made you say this could be either? What did you see that made you say they might be saving an animal such as a polar bear? Keep looking! Remember to provide evidence from the image to support your claims.
Lucas (Vientiane, Lao PDR)
We believe that this is some sort of military training or investigation. We think this because the men have knives strapped to their legs, and their facilitators have combat fatigues. One student recognized the Finnish flag on of the man's armbands. These men may be new to the military, hence their intense training regime.
Casper and Max (Switzerland)
OK so basically there are like a bunch of guys and they are wearing a uniform which is possibly an army uniform and there are 2 men who are wearing dry suits which are used to keep you dry in cold temperatures. This suggests that this to people are going into a cold temperature which we can see because of the ice. They could be a private or they could we government people which are going to do things underwater like repair a broken cable or look for objects underwater. They have a tether which allows them to be pulled out.
Claire (AOSE)
@Casper and Max What tells you it is an army uniform? What makes you think they are government people? What might they be looking for? What tells you they are fixing a cable?
Emily and Anna (Basel)
we see the Norwegian flag on one of their uniforms, so we assume that these people are in or at least from Norway. They are clearly preparing for ice diving, and we can tell this because they are wearing oxygen mask and diving equipment., as well as being situated by a hole in the ice. We think it might be training or conditioning possibly for the millitary, due to the uniforms.
Rafael and Noah (Basel, Russia)
These soldiers are from the Finnish Army and it seems as if they are prepping two other soldiers to scuba dive under a frozen body of water. The yellow cord may be an oxygen cord where it connects to an oxygen supply. We reckon they are preparing to counter the Russians as the ice begins to melt.
Julia M (AOSE)
@Rafael and Noah How are they going to counter the Russians? How will the SCUBA diving help them accomplish their goal?
Elliot, Naomi (Swizteland)
There appears to be a expedition into the ice in possible Finland as one of the men is wearing a finish-flag. Due to the full masks and communication gear it can be assumed that the are going very deep down into the ice. The fact that the are using ring ropes to deadens supports this theory. Given that they are all wearing military uniforms with one man barring a finish flag and a another with a Denmark flag it can be considered that this expedition is being run as a group between several governments as either a scientific study or a training exercise.
Dimish (Basel, Switzerland)
We think that this is the Finnish and Norwegian military testing out underwater equipment. We think this because the troops are wearing Finnish and Norwegian patches on their jackets, and they have special equipment attached to their personnel.
FRM (Palermo, Italy)
I think they are trying to kill a seal. I think so because there is a harpoon located on the right side of the picture. The harpoon deals 20 HP with siphon setting and 8* multiplier with head shot. Unfortunately these divers are bots thus wont get the OP multiplier. I also know they are in Finland thus i can conclude that a new map is coming to fortnite or a new region where players will be allowed to go underwater.
Magali (France)
They could be searching for oil . The divers are laying sonars on the floorbed of the ocean in Laponie in Norway . The operations are supervised by the army.
Bella.T (AOSE)
@Magali What tells you that they are traveling to the floor bed of an ocean in Norway?
Lorel and ede (Swtizerland)
We believe that this picture either takes place in Finland or takes place somewhere in the upper northern hemisphere. There is a finish flag on one of the soilders uniform. There are two men wearing thick dry suits and are sitting at the opening of an ice hole in a frozen over lake. This could be training for other situations because they don't seem to be in a rush or they are exploring. It appears to be a military operation but at the same time there wouldn't be any public photographers present.
Carter and Owen (Basel, Switzerland)
We believe the men are part of the UN - their camouflage is different and emblems seem varied. Alternatively they could be from Finland (due to the Finnish flag on the second right man's shoulder). They may be in Finland or another freezing northern country. Most likely, they are retrieving something from under the ice (as the knives might suggest), or exploring at the very least. They can't be going far as they are using a compressor and tubes instead of tanks.
srvt (Saxtons River, VT)
Nathaniel Jackson I think that they are getting ready to dive in the artic. They are seeing how the wildlife is going. They are also checking up on the ecosystema dn making sure everthing is ok. It looks like they are from Russia
Grace (aose)
@srvt What details tell you that this takes place in Russia?
Illy, Izzy (Jupiter)
They are possibly in Finland due to one of the men having a Finnish flag on the side of his jacket. They are also in a very cold climate due to the thick snow. The four men without the diving gear on are helping the other two to put it on. The two divers are attached together by what looks like a yellow rope so that they don't get lost when in the water.
camilea (Switzerland)
In this picture, we can see seven men in presumably the Arctic as they are surrounded by snow and ice. Four of the men are wearing camo suits whereas three men are wearing all black. The two men in black at the front are wearing masks which suggest they are going diving. Additionally, their feet are in the water where a hole is cut into the ice. They appear to be from the military since they are wearing camo clothes. Men in black have are attached to a yellow rope which may be used to prevent them from getting lost under water. They are from Norway and Finland, since their unifroms contai patches suggesting that. They could be going on a military expedition or are required to do this as part of their training.
Annika and Cat (Basel, Switzerland)
There is a group of 7 men in a tundra, four of the men are in camo gear, one is in an all black, and two men are in scuba gear. We can see a Finish flag, and a Danish flag. We think they are all working for an NGO because of the difference in flags and camo. The patch in their arms is a polar bear, so we think that they are conducting research about climate change or animal conservation. The two scuba divers have various tubes and tools on their bodies so that they can reach them easily under water. They also have yellow safety ropes so that they can be easily found and pulled out from under water.
Caitlin, Danae (Basel)
Judging by the attire, climate and environmental conditions, and the small flags (Norse and Finnish) sewn onto the clothing, we presume this photo was taken in a Scandinavian country. The attire indicates that they have military relations and could be participating in an expedition for the military. The expedition seems involve diving under the ice in what are most likely sub zero waters. Because of the masks, attire, and ice, we can presume that the weather is cold, most likely below zero. Judging by the equipment around, and attached to the divers, this is most likely being executed for scientific purposes, perhaps with the goal of measuring conditions in this specific location, under ice. Potentially oxygen level, pressure, temperature...
