The wisdom and sensitivity in Anne Barnard's writings are always outstanding. Her work on Syria has been particularly impressive in these times when the Syrian regime has made gains in its territorial control.

Still trying to push the brutal regime angle? It's over, get over it.

Anne Barnard's articles have never acknowledged the US role in working since 2006 to destabilize Syria, as detailed in a diplomatic cable leaked in 2012. She has always seemed part of the government/ mainstream media's mission to demonize Assad to justify the US working for regime change in Syria. I'm not sure there is anything new about the torture claims. This was released in 2015, after being compiled by people opposed to Assad and needing to prove him evil. The truth... who knows... I wonder why this article now. More timely is the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has begun responding to a leaked document which contradicts official OPCW findings on an alleged chemical weapons attack last year in Douma, Syria. https://www.moonofalabama.org/2019/05/syria-opcw-engineering-assessment-the-douma-chemical-weapon-incident-was-staged.html#more Certainly Assad uses torture, so does the US. The US had Assad do torture for them during the Iraq War. Assad's government promoted a secular society where all religious and ethnic groups.were respected. However, the US, was always encouraging the ethnic Sunnis to do regime change, wanting a more compliant government, approved of by Saudi Arabia and Israel. The US could have brought out the best in Assad, but it chose to bring out the worst. Anne Barnard's very one sided reporting helped bring out the worst.

Thank you Ms. Barnard for an insightful rendition of reality in Syria. It is important for people who may struggle to choose between a Latte or a Mocha realize that people's choices in oppressive systems are limited to lack of freedoms, torture, and death.

@Farid Ghadry, thank goodness Ms. Barnard's rendition wasn't extraordinary.
