This looks like a movie to watch alone, and great review by A.O. Scott. Tilda Swinton gave a brilliant performance in 'Orlando' in timeless yesteryears. Enjoyed the trailer, and it brought to mind, souvenirs and tinges of a novel by Iris Murdoch.

All the actors are terrific. And like Scott mentioned, James Spencer Ashworth, who plays Julie's father, is exceptionally naturalistic.

Yeah yeah I see it as an instructional film for my nieces... much as I dig Scott’s reviews I thought the dim look of the film gave everyone at the Angelica theater a hell of a headache last night... so help me... the photographer in me squirmed! Hard to believe, too that there are still MOMS ( rich or poor) that are sooo clueless. As for the BOYFRIEND, jerry Seinfeld would say: SNAP OUT OF IT... As for boyfriends borrowing money from clueless girlfriends... that’s surely a sign to switching a boyfriend. Too bad there are very few parents around warning their cuties TO BEWARE! Though there areCELLPHONES now, and THANK GOD, some female mentors in filmschools... as I graduated many yrs before the 80’s I can tell you, I had the first and last famous FEM faculty professor who gave me a much needed clue about a boy friend in class who was surely persona non grata at 20! I have never forgotten her. Or her courage to make me pay attention...

When the "Genres" description simply states, "Drama, Mystery, Romance," I am sold.

Thank you for this review! I felt the same way after seeing Swinton in "I Am Love". She's stunning to watch. There is always something deeper going on in her eyes, and her mouth always has a subtle twitch or movement that makes the viewer not just hear what she is saying, but how she is uttering the words. Magic.

I just watched 3 of her films on the Criterion Channel and I found them to be wonderful. I am really looking forward to seeing this film. It appears that her voice as a director is getting more and more sophisticated.
