There is a very interesting history in this place of resistance to the Nazi regime and rescue of its Jewish citizens by leaders of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. Two were designated to be Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem in 2011.

Oh this is so well deserved! Plovdiv is truly a gem. Originally from Minnesota, I lived there for 2 years during a Fulbright research and the place and it’s people are truly magical. Also, good work nytimes, you found some of the best people to show you around!

Can't believe the varnish, the embellishment, the gloss-over that a hapless American travel writer can give to a derelict, provincial town, where everyone is "aylyak" to the corrupt political clique of the local locusts gorging on the "European funds" leaving crumbs for its denizens

You really pulled the thesaurus out for this one. Do you believe any of it?
