In my humble opinion, he could write about any subject. I mean, come on, “...His Johnny Walker strides.” Not only beautiful but also picture perfect. Tangible. I will purchase both books. Thank you for exemplary writing NY Times.

Journalism into literature, or literature into journalism; what a gift & what a writer of the first magnitude!

Thank you, Dwight Garner for mentioning A.J. Liebling, the man who said"Freedom of the press is guaranteed only to those who own one."

Great journalist to literature or the obverse, however, you count it--mankind is the recipient of a creative and imaginative genius; i.e., high quality entertainment.
The first time I was in a printshop (printing high school newspaper) I was standing aside, listening to the beat of the printing press. The printshop owner came up to me and said, “It’s in your blood isn’t it?” I said, “What is?” He said, “Printer’s ink.”

I love the “Johnnie Walker stride” reference and immediately Googled the Scotch’s logo to see it. Brilliant. If I were a real writer I could have just looked up to glance at the bottle near my desk.

Ironical? Oh, please!
