"Money losing title?" Wait. Isn't it the New York Times that is failing?
Ed (America)
"The money-losing title..." Like the "failing" New York Times? Just kidding.
Counter Measures (Old Borough Park, NY)
Not surprised that the National Enquirer has been struggling! Lots of competition for gutter and yellow journalism! Even the New York Times has been featuring tabloid type articles, for the past several years! Not my Uncle's New York Times, anymore!!!

Perhaps it's just me. I couldn't get past the $1million Bat Mitzvah. I wonder how many children starving in America could have been fed with that amount of money.

So, maybe I missed something? Does the new Enquirer owner assume liabilities pertaining to the Bezos situation? Honestly, I can't fathom why anyone would want to have their name associated with the Enquirer brand.
Daisy (Brooklyn)
The old man made his fortune starting with a bankrupt newsstand. At his father's knee.
Bill (Midwest US)
In the words of Alfred E. Neuman.... "What? Me worry?" Mad magazine was always a more honest and forthright publication than the National Enquirer. I enjoyed laughs from both. Mad, because of its irreverence The National Enquirer, because I knew better than to believe anything in it
INDE (NY)
Our legal system's view of just punishment: ..... " 'shall commit no crimes whatsoever' for three years"
Angela (Farmingdale, NY)
It would have been delicious if Jeff Bezos had bought it.
Mark Shyres (Laguna Beach, CA)
When I was in the University of Missouri School of Journalism (rather a bit overrated now- except for the brilliant Steve Kopcha in the ad section and one or two others) we did a survey of stories in the National Enquirer and found that 96 percent of the stories also ran (interesting, but unintended pun) in the NY Times and Washington Post (albeit, with different headlines, lead ins and editing). That may be news to a lot of you. The other 4 pc had mostly to do with Martian abductions leading to mind control over the media (yet to be disproven, or is this comment evidence? ).
J Chaffee (Mexico)
@Mark Shyres And we are supposed to be influenced by second rate research from a bogus avenue of "higher education?" A school of journalism is a ridiculous thing, given one can learn all that is meaningful about journalism in a couple hours. The rest is gibberish-based malarkey, opinions with an axe to grind.
EJ (Akron, Ohio)
Who owns Muscle and Fitness now.
David (Tasmania)
Sounds like a lovely man. He'll fit right in.
Clint (Walla Walla, WA)
This reminds me of song by Neil Young; "Helpless".
Brian Winkel (Cornwall NY)
Here is something to think about. It is only because of the trash we have in the White House that the New York Times has to take space to report about the trash that we find on our supermarket checkouts We are better than that as a society in a country.
Robert (Out West)
You sure?

Who gets the stuff in the safe ?
AC Grindl (Bluffview, Texas)
I give the Enquirer 20,000 at bats. I need an opinion, is that too many? Obviously this world is not paying attention to whom they have copied negatively. Please direct my attention to those I may better serve.

This is quite possibly the worst NYTmes article I’ve ever read. For those who wonder about media bias, and the extinction of calm, objective, opinion free news reporting, this article should be studied by journalism students worldwide. It reads as an astonishing paragraph after paragraph hit job. I was waiting for the negative language to turn on the introduction of the new owner and sure enough there it came, a lengthy section in tabloid style lower than the Enquirer itself, amazingly banal research implying multiple smears any way the reporter could. RIP straight up objective reporting and welcome telling the public exactly what to think.
Jeremy P. (Michigan)
A hit job? It literally reported facts and background.
Alain (Chicago)
@Mark W. I’m confused by your comment. This seems fact filled and well written to me.
rslay (Mid west)
Everything that comes into the trump sphere of influence dies.
Susanna (Idaho)
Perhaps American Media Inc owners will need the sale proceeds for their defense attorney fees as the Federal prosecutors indict them for extortion.
Shamrock (Westfield)
You can make a lot of jokes about the Enquirer but at least it didn’t run an above the fold front page story alleging during the general election campaign that John McCain was having an affair with a woman.
Michael Grissom
Didn't Robert Cohen go to jail in the 90s?
JHM (UK)
Hopefully not another devout Trump supporter!
Mike (Portland)
I knew that this sleazy tabloid would be sold to someone within the same persuasion as David Pecker. Such tabloids can be used for political blackmail . We talk and worry and all focus is on Russian influence over Trump , what about Kompromat material orchestrated closer at home ?
CD (USA)
I am rather enjoying watching the businesses, lives, and careers of everyone surrounding the amoral dotard forever destroyed.
db2 (Phila)
It’s all so sleazy.
Easy Goer (Louisiana)
What kind of agreement is one which reads (American Media) "shall commit no crimes whatsoever" for three years and that, if it did, the company "shall thereafter be subject to prosecution for any federal violation of which this off has knowledge."? It reminds me of guys panhandling on the subway; who would say "I didn't rob anyone today", or "I didn't assault anyone", etc; As if by not doing those things, he (or she) should be rewarded. It's like I wake up one day and say, "I am not going to rob Chase Bank at Sheridan Square today", (therefore), " I will take your donations."
Broz (Boynton Beach FL)
Could the purchase be a "catch & kill" of those publications?
ReadingLips (San Diego, CA)
@Broz Re: "Could the purchase be a "catch & kill" of those publications?" That occurred to me also. But if these publications go away, someone else will invent others. There is (unfortunately) a readership for this kind of nonsense. Also, if someone pays $100 million, they're not doing so to close them.
ArtistMarta (PA Humanist)
My immediate thought is a question; Who is James Cohen, and what are his political leanings? (OK, it was 2 questions)! It begs the question, though, what will Mr. Cohen do with this tabloid? What an opportunity to turn it into a legitimate instrument for 'average' Americans to peruse and acutually get some authentic news.Time will tell (no pun intended).
RB (MD)
I wonder why James Cohen would buy a money losing publication. Especially when it's possible that they violated their plea agreement over the Trump catch and kill campaign finance issues with the Bezos adultery alleged blackmail. Seems like it would be just buying a headache.
Adrien (Australia)
@RB maybe thinks he can make it profitable. Maybe want influence. Maybe not as much with this sort of publication. Many influential publications are not profitable these days. Or maybe he has so much money this is a fun hobby (like owning race horses)
ACounter (Left coast)
I am not waiting for Trump to tweet about "the failing National Enquirer." His duplicity works both ways.
AJ (Midwest)
Open the vault!
ACounter (Left coast)
I'm not expecting a Trump tweet about the "failing National Enquirer." After all, his duplicity works both ways.
Kevin (Seattle)
are the safes with the goodies on Trump included in the deal?
Gene Eisman (Bethesda, MD)
Why would any sane person purchase this disgusting ‘newspaper,’ which became a willing tool of President Trump’s ascension to the White House and, more recently tried to blackmail Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos. The National Enquirer should be put out of it’s misery.
rbyteme (Houlton, ME)
I was hoping against hope that somebody would buy the thing and bury it forever. Oh well.
Lyn Elkind (Florida)
My family flies A LOT. I have bought books, magazines, OTC meds and snacks at hudson News in airports all over America. They will never see another dime from us.
On the coast (California)
@Lyn Elkind .......because......?
VG (Guanacaste, Costa Rica)
The article clearly states that the Cohen’s do not own that business anymore, but a Swiss transnational. He just inherited the Hudson News fortune
