I'm surprised this article didn't note the origins of the quote that gives the book its title. It's from 1947 noir classic Out of the Past (my co-favorite noir along with Double Indemnity). When femme fatale Jane Greer protests her innocence of a theft (falsely as we discover later) to pursuing PI Robert Mitchum, who has fallen in love with her, he replies "Baby, I don't care." IMO, this is the quintessential line in all of noir.
