I don’t know where Gallatin, NY is, but I presume it’s in upper NY state. The same section in the paper has a series of articles about how the area called Hudson valley is turning into the Hamptons where million dollar mansions are being built. Here we have this odd situation where an architect builds a farmhouse on steroids and relegates the original house to a one room guest house. Sort of a metaphor for the gentrification of northern NY state. The fact is, no one really needs the faux farm house. No farmer could afford, or want, to live there. A Real farm house is very livable, just don’t tear down the walls and turn it into a faux NY loft.

@Bathsheba Robie This house is right in the heart of the Hudson Valley right between the two best villages (Rhinebeck and Hudson). The Hudson Valley isn't the Hamptons yet!

The Gallatin house, what with those dark tile floors and swimming pool in the middle of a forest (think of the cleaning), seems like something only an architect or interior decorator could love.

This would be more meaningful if it showed the extremes. Closer to the coast in Southern California, $1M gets you a bungalo in moderate condition. The sample house shown is beautiful and probably in a decent neighborhood, but also probably 10 miles from the coast which, to Californians, may as well be in Arizona.

The $1.1 million is the “asking price” for that LA house. In other words that’s the bottom and bidding will drive up the selling price to about $2 million or more. That’s the way the system works here in the Bay Area and in Southern California.

About the Japanese-inspired house. Sorry the indoor garden space seems to have flubbed. It would seem that if the new owner brought a cat, the feline would likely find those spots irresistable for the world's most luxurious litterbox(es).

@Joe Clever and hysterical!
