The National Enquirer Is for Sale, and a Deal Seems Near

if the sale includes the catch and kill stories, that would make it worth a lot
Radha (BC Canada)
Wouldn't it just be icing on the cake if Bezos bought it and shut it down. Same thing needs to be done with Fox News. Someone mega-millionaire needs to buy it and shut it down.
Marshall (California)
I hope he buys it and publishes all the dirt they collected on Trump.
DC (Ct)
Who will tell us that boy george is about to marry michael jackson if they go under.
Rick (StL)
National Enquirer circulation at 275,000 per week; 7m peak in 70's; lost $75m 201; American Media deep in debt to Chatham, yet another part of this incestous troyka of sex, money and politics. This thing is dead. Facebook is so full of this type of toxic waste it makes NE look like a comic book.
tom (nyc)
i hope pecker goes to jail at some point
Big4alum (Connecticut)
The poked the wrong bear. They're just lucky Bezos is not buying them
Mark (Ohio)
The most awesome karmic outcome to the National Enquirer sale would be a purchase by Jeff Bezos who then turns it into a continuous report on all of the investigations of the Trump administration / campaign. It would be the TRUE "National Enquirer"
Tricia (California)
My guess would be that something like Sinclair or equivalent will buy to further the propaganda that already exists. We are living in scary, scary times.
cfc (Va)
Best outcome would be if Amazon disallowed the Natinoal Inquirer and it's other owned publishing property subscriptions to be sold on Amazon. They shut down AppleTV sales via Amazon for a few years, it's in the realm of the possible.
Adam (AZ)
What is the value of a criminal expertise in a capitalist society?
Frank Sibolski (Pittsfield,Ma.)
What are we all going to do now? That was one of the few newspapers around here that had even a grain of truth in it.
Anthony Williams (Ohio)
“In a statement, Mr. Pecker said that American Media had shifted its emphasis to its glossy magazines, such as Us Weekly and Men’s Journal.” Yes putting your money in printed magazines, sure sounds like a good twenty-first century strategy to me.
BM (Ny)
Hard to imagine what kind of person you are to buy this tabloid and read it. I'm no saint but if I found someone I know reading this garbage I'd have to ask myself " just how broken is this person "? You sometime must expose yourself to something to judge its message and value, I have looked at this while standing in line at a supermarket but it is so incredibly low brow and ignorant it is easy to put down after a first look.
WeHadAllBetterPayAttentionNow (Southwest)
The Mercers will probably buy it and make Pecker the publisher.
joe (syracuse ny)
The sale should be stalled until the court cases are settled. The underlying assets might be at risk in the penalty phase of any trial.
Bill McGrath (Peregrinator at Large)
“They actually have a very good record of being right.” Only in Trump's alternate-reality bubble.
Susan (East Coast)
Maybe they'll go back to early Enquirer stories about earthlings who were kidnapped by aliens or hairy wolf children raised in the wild. It could only be an improvement.
Jo (Georgia)
@Susan So funny but the absolute truth.
Birdygirl (CA)
Bezos should buy it, then bury it forever and put the Enquirer out of its misery.
Harry (Bayport, NY)
That would be great!!
Jimmy D (Ohio)
@BirdygAlong with WAPO & New York Times. None of them are news worthy or entertainment. We are in an era of the biggest propaganda machine operating in the world. Who can believe anything anymore on cable tv news or magazines & newspapers? Social Media has been censoring anyone who is truthful today. The American public has been over whelmed with Lies & Political Propaganda that is actually harming this country. We did not the media replacing other American Industries as the top. Look at what it's done to this country. National Inquiry was an entertainment mag, but not the others as they all became political propagandist.
Rob (Boston)
But first reveal all the stuff about Trump that Pecker kept in the vault! I'd pay to see that streaming live.
Lawrence (Washington D.C,)
Late breaking development!!!!!!! The same company that owned Pravda, Izvestia, and a controlling interest in Der Strummer is in the mix for the assets.
susan (nyc)
Speaking from personal experience I know that the National Enquirer is a fine product with which to line a cat's litter box. My cat didn't think so. When I did line his box with it I swear I heard him say "Now that's redundant."
Mike Bonnell (Montreal, Canada)
@susan heheh, Purrfect. Thanks for that.
BM (Ny)
@susan careful you might constipate the poor cat.
Alison Siewert (Lancaster, PA)
Wouldn't the honorable thing be to to shut. it. down? Just burn this pile of bad to ashes, then burn the ashes into nothing. No one--NO ONE needs any part of this crap.
Mike Edison (New York City)
I worked for David Pecker at the Enquirer. I was the Associate Publisher of "The Globe", one of AMI's tabloids. David fired me, as he has many people, nor am I no fan of Trump. That said I have no axe to grind. My experience there made me think the editorial teams were very slimy. You felt like washing your hands after talking to them. I am writing to show a side of David Pecker I don't see in the press. Yes he is bombastic and ran a publishing empire with an iron fist. I know that first hand, but he is also quite charitable. I go back to Hachette with David, and have seen a kinder gentler side of him. He used to ask employees to bring a Christmas present to the Hachette Christmas bash and I would take those out to West Virginia to Catholic Charities to be distributed to some very needy families. I worked on this with David, (he didn't think we had enough toys so he gave me a few thousand dollars out of his pocket to buy more) and when I was heading out there with the toys David handed me $5,000 to "buy them all dinner". I have many other stories like this. You don't see that side of Mr Pecker these days so I thought I would share it.
BM (Ny)
@Mike Edison Well consider this the 1st 2 rows in church are usually filled with people looking for redemption for despicable things they do over and over again.
mary bardmess (camas wa)
@Mike EdisonHumans are complicated.
Rob (Boston)
@Mike Edison sorry, some Toys for Tots does not offset Pecker's purposely trying to influence an American election. Practically every wealthy man when caught doing something wrong trots out his good deeds and "service to the community". One has nothing to do with another, and in fact, the "good deeds" you cite are pathetic and measly. In addition to some toys, buying one meal for the poor in West Virginia is completely laughable and patronizing, not to mention hypocritical when he went to great lengths to illegally tip the scales to elect a man who cares not a bit about the poor of West Virginia, falsely promised them that he would bring ball their coal jobs )an industry that will kill them in the long run) roll back safety regulations for the miners and then wants to deprive poor people of their of access to affordable health care. This is your best defense of a man who trafficked in nothing but slime and sucked up to the Saudis? Have not enjoyed anything more than Bezos' take down of this useless human being. Thanks, Jeff.
Billy Bobby (Ny)
All the Trump stuff will not be going to new buyers, it will be shredded or taken to Pecker’s safe. If you shut it down, someone else just starts another one. It’s the consumers that are the problem, the rag is merely the symptom of the prevailing ignorance of that market, and, dare I say, a segment of Trump’s voters.
EJ Makela (Minneapolis MN)
Would a new owner of the tabloid also become the owner of the “tips and stories” collection? Could The Vault end up in the hands of someone who is unfriendly to the president? Inquiring minds want to know.
Joseph Huben (Upstate NY)
AMI ran a propaganda program against Hillary Clinton:https://cms.qz.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/HILLARY-CLINTON-National-Enquirer-.jpeg?quality=75&strip=all&w=410&h=237 . Portraying AMI and the Enquirer as anything other than a political operative in tune with Trump’s Campaign and Putin’s plan is a bridge too far. Why the legitimate press has allowed the extortion and coercion and blackmail practices of the Enquirer to persist without a genuine investigation is stunning. What every American knows about the Enquirer is that they see it every time they shop in a supermarket or “big box” Pharmacy. What the press knows is that such exposure has an impact on all viewers, even if they never buy the Enquirer. It’s unlikely, given AG Barr’s testimony yesterday (which sounded like an Enquirer headline: “Attorney General William Barr Thinks ‘Spying Did Occur’ on Trump Campaign”) where we learned that Barr will investigate the investigators(spies) instead of the Russians and their “camarades dans les bras”. That’s right, AG Barr has ended the Mueller report and exonerated Trump but has focused on those people who “spied” on Trump. Does anyone want to know more about the “hedge fund” that wants to divest it’s interest in AMI? Start here:Anthony Melchiorre. Don’t hesitate to mention NJ Pension funds, and Bond irregularities.
Michael (Boston)
And the buyer of the Enquirer tabloid is ... Fox “News” Corporation. Then their journey to the dark side will be complete.
VG (Boston)
I hope Bezos buys it and gets his hands on the files of "dirt."
Charlie (NJ)
Don’t get mad, get even. Buy the Enquirer Jeff B!
Bill Hope (New York)
Wouldn’t it be marvelous if the inquirer was “caught and killed” like the many stories it squashed over the years?
Franco51 (Richmond)
Jeff Bezos should buy it.
Kathy Lollock (Santa Rosa, CA)
This magazine is a piece of trash. And how "noble" that it is being sold. Money is still to be made by an enterprise which has made a fortune by impugning the good and praising the bad. But what is most egregious is the individual who calls her/himself a Christian and absorbs its endless deceits and lies as the gospel truth, no pun intended.
Jo (Georgia)
@Kathy Lollock. I have never purchased a National Inquirer also known as trash. But have heard plenty on the news to know it’s trash
T.A. Patterson (Miami)
It should sell for pennies. What journalistic purpose does the National Enquirer serve anyway?
Jh (Australia)
I hope Jeff Bezos buys it
Broz (Boynton Beach FL)
One of the 1% should buy it and CATCH AND KILL the entire enterprise with the final headline of: American Media's final edition of fake news...
Keegs (Oxford, OH)
I imagine Rupert Murdoch will buy it. It can only add to his stable of quality journalism and media.
Leninzen (New Jersey)
I can understand Chatham wanting to free itself of The Enquirer but I have to wonder who would buy this rag given the trouble they are in - and if the catch and kill dirt they have accumulated on celebrities is included as an asset - probably have an impact of an otherwise firesale price. Be interesting if the buyer is Bezos and to see what he does with it.
Not That Kind (Florida)
@Leninzen I feel it would be better for him not to buy this rag. Bezos will likely prevail when he sues the paper, and I don't know anyone other than Murdoch hateful enough to take that huge financial loss. I believe the Enquirer is toast in its present form anyway.
Truth Is True (PA)
It is not clear who is buying the tabloid. Rupert Murdoch should be the buyer. He can add the tabloid to his growing GOP propaganda machine.
Ruralist (Upstate)
I'm waiting for the announcement that Jeff Bezos is buying it for $1. The back story would be easy to write.
Lars (Hamburg, Germany)
Let them reap the harvest that they have sown.
Mike OD (Fla)
It should be sold and burned to the ground. Who cares about fake news- REAL fake news, or phony stories about Natalie Woods death?
Kathy M (Portland Oregon)
Why does Trump survive when all of his “generals” are falling?
David (DC)
This cancer needs to be excised. Let's hope that they are subject to the scrutiny they deserve and then shut down for all the damage they have wrought.
Margie W (Metro Atlanta)
Perhaps justice will finally prevail. Appears everyone in Trump's circle is paying a price for just the connection alone. One has to wonder why anyone would want to be exposed, especially to the media through Trump, having to hire personal lawyers for protection from a possible connection to the lies, chaos, and hatred of Trump's administration. The National Inquirer is finally paying the price for its propaganda, trash news.
AJ (Midwest)
Open the vault! I’m sure we’ll learn more about our president* that the public deserves to know.
Rottowner (Southwest Michigan)
In some circles having the support of this publication would be quite enough to end a career and a good many friendships. When did we become so indifferent to sleaze?
dave (Mich)
Maybe Jeff Bezo should buy it and publish the treasure trove of Trump memorabilia.
ArtistMarta (PA Humanist)
here's a fantasy option: Jeff Bezos buys the Enquirer, turns it into a responsible 'rag' that people can actually learn something decent from while they're waiting on line at the supermarket.,What a novel idea, no pun intended.
Richard Mclaughlin (Altoona PA)
It's only a deal if they get the 'Vault'. Other than that it's just Jackie Onassis's old clothes. Whoever buys the Inquirer is going to be getting something that used to be worth something but in the future will be worth nothing.
merchantofchaos (tampa)
Hopefully there isn't any buyer and the Enquirer publishes it's last edition.
Jane Archer (Riverside Illinois)
I hope Jeff Bezos buys it and either kills it, or uses it against Trump and the Republicans. A little just desserts.
RNS (Piedmont Quebec Canada)
Bezos should buy it if the contents of Pecker's safe that contains the dirt on Trump is included in the sale.
NJLatelifemom (NJ)
Jeff Bezos, if you do not buy this, publish every incriminating story that is hidden away in the vault about Donald, turn them all over to the SDNY, and then shut the rag down, there’s no point to you having all those billions. Please do it.
Matthew Ratzloff (New York, NY)
How much could The National Enquirer possibly be worth? If I were rich, I'd buy it out and shut it down as a service to humanity.
Elizabeth Moore (Sudbury Ontario Canada)
That was my thought!👍
Bos (Boston)
What is the American idiom? What comes around goes around? Or something like that? Sooner or later, the power brokers may end up to be the receiving end especially when the political power pendulum swings the other way. They are smart people - let's not name names but you know who they are - but they like to be the ones behind the scene. Now they are outed, they will need to find another front
