Loved reading about your puzzling family. My daughter bond over the Sunday puzzle in our local paper every time she is home visiting like we used to when she was growing up. I’ve done the NYT puzzles online for years but there is something so satisfying about solving in pen. My mother and I would do the Jumbles everyday when I was a kid and puzzles became a lifelong habit.

Loved your memoir and the church analogy! Quite apt. Also, very reminiscent of my upbringing and how I came to love puzzles and word games through my parents and family weekend competitions. When I came upon the word "ECRU" I was obliged to recall a young man I dated in my early twenties. Brilliant, witty and charming, but when I happened to utter the word "ECRU," he said that it was most assuredly not a word. Obviously, he had never solved the NYT crossword his life. It was what they call a dealbreaker! Thanks for the memories...

Uh oh... It says no comments... I know that's not right! LOL Very quick solve today.. almost a new record. Not because I'm a crossword whiz, just because almost everything was in my "wheelhouse" as we like to say. I liked the theme! As an ex software developer, the multiples of two have been burned into my brain for so long that I notice them immediately, so that helped too. Very enjoyable solve today!

@Steve Faiella Oops.. posted on the wrong article... LOL I really enjoyed your article, though, Kate! Very evocative of a time when families did stuff together... I miss that!
