How New Zealand Banned Assault Rifles in Six Days

Glad I do not live in New Zealandstan. Gun control is the problem along with mental health. Strip the law abiding citizens of the right to self-defense and you wind up with more and more deaths but just not gun related. Look at the UK, the 'knife murder capital' of the world. People are still going to do evil things, heck the majority of gun related violence is roughly 70% gang related, of which whom ignore gun laws 100%. What you need to do is to look at the demographic. Car related deaths, abortions and heart disease kill more people in a DAY then all of the 'shootings' combined in a year but WHERE IS THE OUTRAGE? Nothing more then a control state in action. Want common sense reform? Arm your population and watch crime drop. Criminals LOVE gun free zones, ask any mass shooter, it is what they call it a 'target rich environment'. Sad day in New Zealand.

Wow. I'm just glad I live in a country where it's not that easy to deprive people of their rights.

He says, likely referring to the country with the world's largest prison population, exceeding China's #2 by 500,000 people. @Rosh Penin

This is not "huge", or "unfathomable". It's a reasonable correction to a problem most NZers didn't realize we had. It'll be a small burden for a small population of people who own these guns now, and that burden will be mitigated by buying out these gun owners, a cost that NZers have decided is more than justified. I read consistently that there are changes around climate, race, education, healthcare, rebuilding infrastructure that large majorities of the population in the US support. And yet nothing can be accomplished without years of argument, even without concerns over violating Constitutionally-guaranteed rights. At the Federal level, the government simply seems to not work. Why is this OK?

I listen to The Daily daily, but I trust other episodes are more accurate than this one. The New Zealand government did not "ban assault rifles in six days". Although our system of government is far different to the US, we're a democracy, and, as in the US, the executive has no right to pass such a ban. That requires legislation, which is expected to be passed under urgency by mid April. Further legislation on other issues, such as a system to register guns, not just their owners, is likely after due consideration. Meanwhile it's very heartening to see willingness on the part of many gun owners and retailers to make a ban effective before it's even legislated.

Rational people make rational decisions when faced with danger. Ethical people make ethical decisions. When you have neither reason nor ethics, you have USA senate, filled with self interested, corrupt, politicians too happy to oblige National Rifle Association, determined to keep this country in the Middle Ages with every man with a weapon of his choice in his basement, and each lunatic with a weapon of mass destruction for most damage on civilians as if we are in a war zone. I have absolutely no hope for the USA as long as we have the same tired old politicians, the same powerful dark forces controlling senators and the media, nothing will change in this generation. My hope is the future generation, with Mayor Pete Buttigieg and his milenials.

Why does Mr. Barbaro sound SO INCREDULOUS that finally an actual *real* World Leader *finally* did the right thing ~ a sad statement on just how impossible American citizens find the dire situation #USTravelAdvisory that exists with guns in the USA

That is what a civilized nation does.

"To him that will, ways are not wanting" goes the old proverb. All men are mortal and human life regardless of creed, nationality and place of origin have the same intrinsic value despite our best efforts, as humans to delineate the value based on our biases, whims and caprices. With the aim of curtailing similar heinous and senseless massacres in their country, it's nice to see the courage and swift actions taken by the leaders and people of NZ in light of the tragic and horrific massacre of their people by a deluded ideologue. God bless NZ and its people and God bless America.
