What is your reaction to this record-breaking deal? Do you think any athlete is worth that amount of money? If so, who do you think deserves to get paid hundreds of millions of dollars to play? If not, why not? I think Ochoa deserves all that money because he is the best soccer player. He deserves more than that because he is the best at stopping balls in soccer. He does anything for his team! Ochoa loves his team. He old now. I think he doesn't play any more for the soccer team in Mexico.

No one should be paid such an amount of money for any type of work, athlete or not. I do not discount this man’s hard work and sacrifice whatsoever. What I think we need to change is how much our sports heroes can earn in a single year. And? Why are athletes the heroes? Aren’t other professions just as worthy who go underpaid? Firemen, police officers, and nurses spring to mind. Ahem, teachers are considered heroes by many. A whole slew of athletes have turned around and used their pay to begin schools - LeBron James and his I Promise School in Akron, Ohio, for one. Christiano Ronaldo, John Cena, and others have used their fortunes for giving back to their communities selflessly. But my point is this: who needs to amass that much money in one year? Is it for a bigger house, a fancier car, a jet-setting lifestyle of the rich and famous? And why? Why do these people need these things, but immigrant children don’t get soap and toothbrushes? Poor children are shamed for owing lunch money. Our military veterans are homeless when they return from fighting for our freedoms, including the right of Mike Trout to earn the biggest payout in American history. Would anyone argue that these everyday, selfless heroes deserve less compensation than a baseball player?
Alberto (classical highschool)
Mike Trout in my opinion deserves it the 430 million dollars. at first i thought that it was illogical to offer and individual so much money, however after seeing his stats that showed how constant he is i think it's well devised. also the amount of time that he invested outside of practice to excel is super noticeable. I don't see him being any other than Los angeles as well. i personally dislike the los angeles angels but i do acknowledge his skills as a center fielder. Plus to be able to gain this much money you need to be good at your crafts.so regardless of the ridiculous amount of money that was offered it is well deserved.
Paige Phillips (Hoggard High School, Wilmington NC)
Professional athletes have worked their whole life to get where they are now. They are the best of the best and have to work extremely hard to maintain their fitness so that they can perform at the optimal level. They deserve to be paid for playing and the fame they earned is well earned. However, $430 million is way too much. There are far more better causes that a quarter of that money could go to. No athlete is worth HUNDREDS of millions of dollars, even the best of the best. Instead of facing real world problems like pollution, high school shootings, diseases we have not yet found a cure for like cancer, or poverty in the US- we are spending hundreds of millions of dollars on athletes. Who-yes- have worked hard, but-no-do not NEED the amount of money that they make.
Ethan Baldwin (Bryant, AR)
@Paige Phillips I agree with your statement that professional athletes are the “best of the best” in their field, but I disagree with your statement that contracts given are too much money and that the money should be spent on better efforts. While efforts like “pollution, high school shootings, diseases...or poverty” should be addressed, these issues lean towards the governmental funding section rather than private funding which is how sports teams play their players. Also, the amount of money they are given would not be so high if there was not a high demand for watching the “best of the best” perform. The dictionary definition of supply and demand states that “the amount of a commodity, product, or service available and the desire of buyers for it,” which would be the players and the fans desire to watch them play and those factors are what is “regulating its price” which would be the contract amount the players are paid. Therefore, the amount the players are being paid is so high mostly due to the demand for the sport in the supply and demand market that is America.

$430 Million DOLLARS thats alot of money, but thats not even alot of what alot of over athletes make, but still thats alot of money and this dude is set for the rest of his life.
Zareen Khan (Masterman, Philly)
I don’t find it to make much sense. I am wowed at the fact that he was exceptional enough to be offered 430 million dollars, however I feel like the amount of money he received was a bit excessive. 430 million dollars is a lot of money, and not to mention it is simply for a contract that will be played out for only ten years. I don’t think any athlete is worth that much money. You can be amazing, however mankind will not benefit from you doing well in a sport. I believe that the 430 million could have been used on advancing technology, medicine, or used at tan attempt to help refugees and people in the midst of wars in the Middle East.
Rey de mil coronas (walla walla high school)
In my opinion $430 million in 10 years is crazy, he deserves it for trying really hard and not giving up. 10 years is a lot of time but for 430 million it will be worth it.
Tiko ML (Masterman School)
I believe a man is worth how much money anybody is willing to pay him. Since Mike Trout just received $430 million, he is worth that amount of money. He is a great baseball player that continues to earn awards and break records. Even though I am not a big baseball fan, I understand Mike Trout is one of the greatest baseball players to ever play the game. Compared to top players in other sports, Mike Trout doesn’t make anywhere near there salary. The players make less than Mike Trout just based on salary but they receive many millions of dollars of off endorsements alone. Mike Trout makes 2.5 million dollars off of endorsements, James Harden and Kevin Durant’s endorsement deal with Nike is worth $250 million for the next 11 years.
Kayla (providence)
I personally don't watch sports, so I'm not sure how much money is "normal" for an athlete to make. I do know that the world is going downhill. The earth is dying and poverty rates are climbing. $430 million may not fix everything but it would certainly help. I believe people should work as hard as they want to earn as much money as they want. However, there is such thing as too much money. I don't know this for a fact, but I am almost positive that any person does't need that much money in their lifetime, and they probably won't even use it all. According to the article Trout has a limited ability to earn money outside the game. To me this means the only thing Trout is really good at is baseball. Meaning he's not well-rounded, or contributing anything more to society than just entertainment. There are people that are transforming lives, and helping the world be a better place and they don't get paid enough. So I think getting paid $430 million to play a sport for a couple hours is not okay. However I think that's what makes America, America. The sports, concerts, actors, and singers. That's who we give all our attention and money to: the people who keep us occupied for a couple hours. The people who keep us distracted for our problems. The people we wish we were. That is America. Trout has many endorsement deals with companies such as Nike.(Kepner) Meaning athletes are making more money just by being athletes. I think athlete's income should be better controlled.
Hank (Philadelphia, PA)
I don’t really follow baseball and even if he is the best MLB player it doesn’t matter because $430 million is a lot.I don’t really care but I think that he does deserve it and if he is that nice of a guy than he will probably donate most of it any way.If you can make $43 million dollars a year but don’t donate to multiple charities or any charities, than you probably don’t deserve the money but if he is willing to donate a lot of his earnings than can you really be mad at him for doing what he loves and getting paid for it.
Dante (Julia R. Masterman)
I don’t really agree that Mike Trout should have a contract giving him $430 million dollars. I know that he is a very talented and diligent man who won two American League Most Valuable Player Awards and has been runner-up four times. But making such a deal with athletes talented or not, is just iffy. That much money should not all be given to one person. That money has the potential to help many people. We have several people in our society who are homeless and/or poor. They are starving and dehydrated and/ or living on the streets. Do they have a chance to go ahead and be a famous baseball player like Mike Trout? No. They don’t even have a chance to get the basic needs that all humans need: food, water, and shelter. Besides, all of that money can be a temptation for anyone. There are some wealthy famous people who use their money to buy bad drugs and/or alcohol. Though I don’t have anything against Trout, it is a possibility that he might go to the bar or those stores that sells illegal drugs. In my opinion, that money should be given to the people that need it. That money can have a positive influence on our society. It sure can’t influence our society, if it is all given to a single person like Mike Trout.
Sienna Shelton (Masterman, Philadephia)
I do not know that much about sports, specifically baseball, but I don’t think that any person is worth 430 million dollars over a 10 year span. However, I do know that Mike Trout must probably be a really good player to be getting paid that much, and that even though he won’t have the highest salary, he is probably very grateful. I hope that Mike Trout uses his money wisely and does good things with it, such as donating to charities for good causes, rather than wasting it away.
Lily Sklaver (J.R Masterman School, Philadelphia)
When Bryce Harper was signed to the Phillies for $330 million, I was greatly surprised by the amount of money sports teams spend on players. Mike Trout is an exceptional player, and deserves to get $430 million. When players join teams, they uproot their lives to got to the city they play for. Any player who is dedicated and hard working deserves large sums of money, and if you think about it, Mike Trout is going to be playing for the Angels for the next decade.
Havana C (Masterman: Philadelphia,PA)
To start off, that is a huge amount of money. At first, I was so surprised that baseball teams would actually offer up that much money just for one player. Personally, I don’t think any athlete is worth that amount of money. I can understand why they would want to do something like that but $430 million is questionable. They're basically saying that someone is getting paid $430 million to play a sport and give people entertainment, that’s it. I don’t think that is worth $430 million dollars. I think that amount of money could be used for so many more important things that actually need that kind of money for example that can help donate to help cure diseases. I am not against it but overall, I just think it could be used for better reasons to actually make a change in the world.and help the environment.
Naiima Jabati (Julia R. Masterman, Philadelphia)
For me, I don’t really know much about baseball, but I do feel as if this amount of money is an awful lot for a baseball player. Yea, he’s one of the best in the MLB, but I just feel feel as if one player actually deserves that much money. That money could easily go towards something definitely more useful and something that will benefit us in society, rather than for entertainment. But other than that, to get this amount of money is a great opportunity, and would like to congratulate Mike trout on his accomplishment.
G Jap (Masterman School, Philadelphia PA)
I believe that no athlete needs or deserves $430 million, and the money could have been used for a more worthy cause than this contract. Mike Trout is indeed a great baseball player, and he probably is worth a lot, but what does one person need to do with $430 million dollars? There are so many other good causes that could actually use the money. For example, $430 million could give a laptop to over 1 million students. In addition, you could use the money to raise the salary of some teachers. I am a person who does like sports. However, compared to teachers, athletes have little influence on the common welfare of our society. Sure athletes can be good role models or entertain you and such, but they really are overpaid. Honestly, the reason this deal reached such a high amount of money is because of fans. Athletes make money based on how many ticket sales they create which is based upon their fanbase. If everyone agrees that $430 million is too much, then they need to stop making the sports industry have such a high demand.
Eric Li (Masterman, Philadelphia)
This amount of money is extremely high and it is unfair that a normal baseball player is being paid that much. An athlete who is playing for a hobby and career should not be paid that much, as compared to any other career. No athlete should be paid that much, because sports is for fun and games, and 43 million a year is obviously way too much. If it was shortened to 250 million dollar totals, then that would be more reasonable. If this guy is being paid this much, then everyone would then want to convert to this job because it "pays so much". People, I think, are more worried about their paycheck than doing something for fun.
David S. (Masterman Philadelphia, PA)
I don't know too much about any sport, but I still think that this is a ridiculous amount of money to give. 430 Million? That's about 7,600 times more than the average yearly pay of America. I understand that he is an extremely valuable and outstanding player, but I don't think anyone would deserve THAT much money, even if he's someone like Mike Trout. It can be used for so many other things. Even cutting it down to around 200 or 250 Million would be better.
Eleena John (Masterman, Philly, PA)
I think earning 430 million dollars is a large sum of money and there are pros and cons. A pro about receiving this large amount of money is because the athlete worked hard to earn the money. Through the years the athlete played and built up his reputation. I think the player deserves the amount of money because he worked hard to reach his fame. A con of this 430 million dollar contract is that with this amount of money many poor and unfortunate families can use the money to get a better life. With this money, 860 families can receive 500,000 dollars. There should be a limit of how much a player can receive because giving this much money to other families who really need it can stop poverty. These are the pros and cons of receiving 430 million dollars.
Brian E. (Masterman, Philadelphia, PA)
I think that this record-breaking deal is a bit too much. No athlete should be worth $430 million dollars just because he/she plays a sport. It’s just a sport. I mean, yes, excellent athletes deserve excellent pay, but it still seems like way too much money. I don’t understand how the Angels can offer a baseball contract for 430 million dollars!!!! The owner of the Los Angeles Angels should not pay one player this exorbitant amount of money. They should instead try to put some money back into the community by helping disadvantaged or disabled kids who aspire to become baseball players. Or set aside money for scholarships to help economically disadvantaged kids go to college. Or maybe put some of the money towards the public school system. There’s so much good that can be done. If they have 430 million dollars to spend on one player, they should definitely do more for communities.
Mary Awopileda (Providence, RI)
Reading this article made me upset. $430 million dollars is an insane amount of money for a single person. In a country where hundreds of thousands of people are homeless, and even more are living below the poverty line, it just doesn't seem right that someone is making more money that the majority of people in America will ever witness in their lifetime. I respect athletes and the entertainment they provide but they surely don't do anything to that is significant in bettering the world. This story is a prime example of the economic gap between the rich and the poor. What baffled me the most was this quote that stated "But in 2030, no matter how Trout’s baseball career progresses, he will earn at least $36 million — a priceless long-term assurance." This is basically saying he doesn't even have to work in order to secure this much money. How is that just? If anyone were ever to be considered to make that amount of money, I think they would have to do something extraordinary for mankind. A cure for cancer or AIDS perhaps. But 430 million dollars to play a sport is not right.
Molly Hatfield (Masterman School, Philadelphia, PA)
Honestly, I think it’s kind of crazy that one athlete is getting paid so much money. I mean I get that he’s a really good athlete, but should any one person really make that much money? I mean it’s sports. I don’t have anything against sports- but seriously that’s a crazy amount of money for one guy who can swing a bat, run some bases, and catch a ball. Believe me, I have nothing against this dude, but still- what else could we be doing with that money? I think with that money we could do so many more things to help save the world, but instead we’re just giving it to one person. I think we should be doing better things with this money, things that benefit our country and our world more, because you can do a lot of things with $430 million.
Jason S. (Masterman School!)
430 million dollars is quite a bit of money for one person, even if they are one if the best players in all of baseball, although I think it might be too much! Think about all the things that $430M could buy you. Is this one player worth all that? Nevertheless, Mike Trout will greatly better any team, and might make a multimillion dollar career for the coach and players, so in the long run, it might actually be worth it!
Abibat Lateef (Julia R. Masterman)
$430 million dollars is an extremely large amount of money for one person. Mike Trout himself wouldn’t even be able to spend it all in his lifetime, and what would he really do with this much money. He is already rich from his career as a baseball player and doesn’t need all this extra money. There are so many people out there who don’t even have enough money to feed themselves and that are even homeless. As much as 430 million can help people like this and solve other issues in the community. When he is in ownership of this vast sum, he should donate some of it to charity and other causes. Though he has made some big accomplishments in his career, $430 million is a lot for one person to possess.
Hanna Sh (J.R. Masterman, Philadelphia, PA)
When you see the amount $430 million, you think, “Wow! That’s a lot of money!” -- and it is. $430 million in a decade is about $43 million per year, and that is more than the average American lawyer makes. That is a crazy large amount of money and these people should not be earning that much -- it’s just sports, after all. You have to be insanely good at the sport to earn that much money, but it doesn’t take much intelligence. However, although it isn’t fair, it is a pretty good deal and Mike Trout sure is lucky. I mean, he will play on the LA Angels’ team until he is, what, 40 or 45? And then he will retire, but unlike others, he will be filthy rich. He is going to practically bathe in dollar bills just because he played on a state team for a decade. In my opinion, $430 million is definitely too much money for an athlete, for ANY athlete, to earn in 10 years.
Julia Fede (J R Masterman [Philadelphia, PA])
My reaction to this is just, why? $430 million is a crazy amount of money, and I don’t think that any athlete, or person in first place, is worth that much. Anyway, what would they use it for? Clothes, a fancy house, gourmet food? That money could be going to better causes like world hunger, child workers, global warming, etc.
Rylee Porter (J.R Masterman, Philadelphia)
I know that professional athletes work tremendously hard at what they do, but $430 million dollars is just way too much money for one person regardless of how hard they work. There are so many people who are struggling to make ends meet while working their hardest every day, such as teachers, firefighters, etc. From what I’ve heard, Mike Trout is a good, genuine guy, and I’m happy that he got so much money for doing what he loves (especially because he is an Eagles fan). However, that is just way too much money for one person that could be used so many different ways.
Rhoslyn Kersten (Philadelphia, PA Masterman School)
- Personally, I think it is unreasonable for someone to be paid that much. I think that is way too much and I know that it could be used for things that helping the world and the environment, instead of for an athlete to live in a humongous mansion with everything he wants. I do like sports, and I do enjoy watching them, but I think it is outrageous how much they get paid. People think everything is about money nowadays,m so the price for things just keeps on going up, and will continue to skyrocket until people realize that not everything is about money. These athletes are most likely not going to spend their paycheck on working to give everyone food and a shelter, they are probably going to spend it on themselves or their families. I am not saying that they should not get paid, because I think that if they work hard then they should get paid for it, but nobody else who may even work harder than these athletes gets paid this much. There Are some people who do a lot more work for their job than these athletes, but yet the athletes get paid millions of dollars more. I do get it though, how these are famous people and how they are being fought over, but still. To me, it does not make sense to pay somebody $430 million dollars.
Lucas Awad (Masterman,Philadelphia)
I think Mike Trout should not get paid as much as he will be paid. No person who plays a sport should be paid that much in comparison to his other teammates. When someone is getting paid a half a billion dollars, he should deserve it and strive for it not let it be wasted with a burnt out pro. I think that Mike is on his downfall and will not survive the next 10 years in professional baseball.
Benjamin Chiem (J.R. Masterman - Philadelphia, PA)
I find this record-breaking deal surprising. I don't really watch baseball so I'm not sure how good Mike Trout is, but I'm pretty sure I've heard of him before. Although I don't watch baseball that often, I'm kind of sad he isn't coming to the Phillies because I'm a Phillies fan. I think the amount of money he is receiving is ridiculous and I don't really think any player deserves hundreds of millions of dollars to play unless they're extremely good. I just believe this because I don't think people need that much money. I think he probably deserves the $430 million though and is being paid the appropriate amount. Even though other players in different sports, such as football and basketball, get paid more than he does, he is still getting a lot for playing baseball.
Nico M. (J.R Masterman School, Philadelphia)
My reaction to this is that Mike Trout better be the best baseball player in the entire world. I have heard of him before, but $430 million dollars is so much money. I wonder how any sports team has that much money to pay for one player. Personally, I do not think that any athlete is worth that insane sum of money unless they hit a homerun every time they step up to the plate or if they have some type of superpower with sports. I could never see anyone with that amount of money for playing a sport. That money can help problems in our world like homelessness, global warming, and to cure diseases. Millions of people could be housed with that money, but instead of caring about them, they use it all on a baseball player.
Sophia (Providence)
No professional athlete should be paid anywhere close to as much money as Trout is receiving. Yes, successfully playing a popular, televised sport takes hard work but so does being a doctor, pilot or having a job in law enforcement. All of these professions require you to be responsible for someone else's life, sometimes even many lives. In order to obtain such jobs, years of schooling and other training is needed similarly to professional athletes. However, being an athlete requires no huge responsibility towards others. I think it is important to keep in mind that these athletes are used as entertainment and therefore are worth so much more than professionals in other elite jobs. To me, this is unfair. I thought $430 million was a lot however it turns out that that amount doesn't even bring, "Trout into the highest tier of overall income for professional athletes." In addition, the money these athletes are receiving doesn't only come from their "owners" but also from outside companies. For example, "Trout earns an estimated $2.5 million from endorsements annually." Sadly, I don't think this system will change any time soon. In the meantime, I strongly believe that using their (the athletes) platforms to positively encourage others, bring awareness to important issues and give back into their communities is extremely important. When one has such a large following, what they put out into the world is perceived by millions and therefore should be used in a positive way.
Ivan Gutsol (Julia R. Masterman)
I’m not a baseball fan at all, but 430 million dollars is too much for a center fielder, I don’t know much about baseball but what I know is how complicated and how many positions it has. So 430 million dollars for 10 years is too much for one man. However I am a huge soccer fan growing up watching and playing it, one thing I know for a fact is players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are priceless, leading any team they play for to reach the ranks. In addition we’ve seen athletes join teams for the money with no success, a great example being Lebron James who joined the Lakers ruining his career.
Ayush Pandejee (Julia R. Masterman, Philadelphia)
This whole deal is super stupid. All this money should be paid to the homeless because they need it the most. All of the athletes shouldn't be paid this much because they are just making our lives enjoyable for only hours at a time.
Angela Xhori (Julia R. Masterman, Philadelphia)
I believe no one athlete is worth all that money. An amount of money that large is more than doctors and surgeons make, people who studied for years and years. However, the sports industry is much different than others. It’s all about publicity and what comes along with the player, besides their athletic skills. After all, there is no such thing as bad publicity. If a team wants to pay 430 million dollars for a single player, it’s their money and they can do whatever they like with it. I have no strong opinion as it is not a topic that I personally have any relation to.
Maya Kowal (Masterman School, Philadelphia)
I am very upset over this deal to Mike Trout. I absolutely think that this is absurd and no one should be paid that much money, especially in a 10-year span. I do not think anyone in sports organizations should be paid that much. Do you know who should be paid $430 million for a 10-year span? Doctors. Doctors are the ones who save people's lives. Here we are, paying players $330 million and $430 million for playing games to the public. What about all of those doctors who work almost 24/7? Guess how many people are saved a year from doctors- at least 500,000 lives. That is way more important than giving entertainment to people around the world. Athletes do not help society at all except giving us some entertainment for a few hours. On the other hand, doctors are working their body off in the ER trying to keep people’s hearts beating. I am utterly disgusted by this news and I hope other people realize how important doctors are to the world.
Arjun Ahya (Masterman School, Philadelphia PA)
Being a baseball fan, I am happy for Mike Trout that he hit payday. He possesses some unique talents that makes him worth the $430 million dollar deal. He is arguably the best player in all of baseball, and 430 million dollars is well deserved for him. He carries his team on his back, and he has stayed relatively injury free. I think Mike Trout got 430 million dollars is because the Angels really needed him to stay. They are developing Shohei Ohtani to become a nice addition to Trout that gives the Angels a nice combo with Albert Pujols too. Trout is still young and can be really valuable to any team that he signs with. If the Angels can sign Ohtani to a long deal and make some more additions, I think they have a really good shot at making the playoffs and possibly going further. They are in a tough division, but Trout can carry the Angels as much as they need him to. I was reading over some of the other comments, and a lot of them talked about how the money can be used to feed homeless people and house them. I completely agree with their statements, just the money in the athletics world is different than the money in the real world. In the athletics world, people get paid crazy amounts to perform well. That money is sort of a tropical island in the middle of an ocean. The players can get to the shore by donating some of their money to people in need. Mike Trout is a very nice guy and I am sure that with the money he has earned, he will help many people.
Kristina Kitsul (Masterman Philadelphia)
$430 million is a lot of money that we can use to do amazing things. Although athletes work their butt off to be at such a high level, giving them extensive amount of money to continue playing sports isn’t fair or reasonable. Mike Trout is truly an incredible player, however he is already really rich, therefore we could use the money for better things. Things such as helping homeless people or ensuring education for all. There are so many things we can do that the powerful don’t even stop to think about. Unfortunately this is how our society works. We value power and money over people, the rich over the poor, and we care for no one but ourselves.
Mariska (Masterman school, Philly)
I personally think athletes deserve their well-earned money, but that kind of money could go to much better causes, serious causes, like the growing homelessness problem California is facing, that kind of money could go towards shelters and food and support for the people that need it. California is also extremely in debt and one of the 10 most polluted cities. These kinds of problems are now problems and they are getting worse and nobody is taking care of them. Now, i'm not saying he doesn’t deserve his money, i'm just saying maybe other people need it more than he does. Maybe he could just get a little less, I think he could survive.
Kenneth R. (Masterman School, Philadelphia)
I don't think that any athlete is deserving of this much money. The only people that should be making 43 million dollars a year are people who are making modern scientific and medical advances or extremely successful investors/business owners/entrepreneurs. I'm not saying that athletes shouldn't be paid a lot of money though. If you look at an athlete such as Lebron James, one of the greatest and most influential basketball players ever, he's paid a lot. Right now Lebron James's contract is for four years and pays around 153 million dollars. Mike Trout's 10-year salary is 10 million dollars less than Lebron James whole estimated net worth. The only reason why I think athletes have the right to be paid even a fraction of this is that what they do with the money. Some of the richest athletes invest a large fraction of there salary to charity. Lebron James even made his own school for underprivileged children in Akron Ohio. I think that in a perfect world anybody who makes enough money to sustain a comfortable life should be contributing to charity and helping others.
Ereena Lalu (J.R. Masterman School,Philadelphia)
My initial thought was just a big, plain “WOWW”. It takes me a while for things to sink in, so I thought afterward, “Who needs that much money ever in their life?” He earns 43 million dollars per year, just for playing a sport! I doubt the average American even makes that much in his/her lifetime! I do not know anything about any sport (except volleyball), nor am a fan of any team, so I don’t think that any athlete should get that large a sum of money. It isn’t that they aren’t good or anything like that, it’s just that 43 million being your annual salary for 10 years doesn’t seem ‘okay’ to me.
Anna Praticò (J. R. Masterman, Philadelphia)
I think this is absolutely absurd, and quite frankly sad. Why is it that athletes get paid more that doctors, teachers, scientists, lawyers, and many others in professional fields? It's not fair. All they do to benefit people (or for that matter, any living thing) is provide a little entertainment for us, when we're bored-- that is, if you find watching sports entertaining. Nothing special, nothing extraordinary. No one should be paid this much money, or even have this much, now that I think about it. Sure Mike Trout might be a good baseball player and what not, but those several hundred million dollars could go towards so much more than a few hours of entertainment. Think about it. We could contribute that money to saving our environment, helping refugees and IDPs, donating it towards a cure for some disease, helping homeless people get back on their feet, and much more. Why would we spend it on a good baseball player? This whole thing is somewhat mind boggling to me, and this is what degrades my faith in humanity.
Sabrina Mintz (Masterman, Philadelphia)
According to some people, he’s a great player but that honestly doesn’t matter. No athlete should get that much money. The money could go to so many other things that need money but it’s going to some baseball player. If he’s such a great player he should probably make a lot of money bt 430 million is way too much. He also most likely has a lot of money and doesn’t need anymore.
Aryan Patel (Philadelphia, PA Masterman)
I loved baseball when I was a kid but as I got older I lost interest in it. This doesn’t change the fact that I was shocked when I first saw the news about the deal. In my head, I thought, “ Wow! That’s a lot of money for an athlete.” I was even more shocked when I saw that this was the record-breaking deal. I do think that any athlete is worth that amount of money and even more. The only reason the Angels are paying him this much is that he is crucial to their team and he is probably an outstanding player. No team would pay a player that much if they weren’t good. So I think that if the athlete performs really well in their sport, they have the right to earn as much money as they want. I do understand that that is a lot of money to invest into a player but if he’s helping your team reach new limits and is helping you win he is worth paying that much money for. You could argue that the money could be used for other things like helping the unfortunate but it’s not like the player is using the money to buy materialistic things all the time, they use the money to help their family, and they also give a lot to charity at events. An athlete gets paid based on how much effort they put into their profession so if you work hard, you deserve the money.
Jonah A. (Masterman School)
That is crazy. For a young person such as Trout to make hundreds me of millions of dollars doing the thing they love, is unbelievable. If I could choose any career to be when I grow up, I would choose to be a professional athlete, for many reasons. The first obviously being that you get to play the sport that you love as a career. The second reason is the money, these athletes make millions of dollars, with a bit of a guarantee, as the best athletes sign for a long time, for a lot of money. In conclusion, those are my thoughts on the day’s picture prompt, as well as professional athletics overall.
Jason B (Masterman (automated bots))
Sure, 430 million is a lot of money, but he is putting his body on the line for 10 years for this money. It's like gambling; you can make tons of money, but if you lose (in this case, get injured badly), you will lose a bunch (medical bills). This contract would be good, however, you would have to factor in the millions of other people who can't afford basic necessities. Maybe they can have 5-15% of the money taken from the contract and be donated to other causes. To summarize, you would need to factor in other people's needs and what the person is risking in order to make a contract reasonable, in which this case, it's not.
Maeve McNichol (Masterman, Philadelphia, PA)
Honestly, I don’t believe that this contract is entirely necessary. It doesn’t make sense to me why these athletes who aren’t financially struggling get this kind of money. Where does it leave everyone else in the world who hardly has anything at all. Overall, the whole idea of paying an athlete this kind of cash while there is so much poverty in the country is crazy. My main question is: What makes this athlete so special? Why do only certain athletes get outrageous deals? Not one athlete can be worth this kind of money. This money is handed to him through contract. A lot of people in the world don’t have that kind of guarantee. I don’t understand why people don’t think about the things happening in our world and choose to give one athlete this much money. If we think about how many people would kill for the money this one man is getting it really becomes clear. The amount of struggling families who are barely scraping by haven’t even been taken into account. It is enraging to see that a man is just able to sign onto a contract for $430 million deal. It’s just handed to him. Not everyone in the world is that lucky. I feel that if everyone in the world were given the opportunity to have this kind of cash, they would take it. Nothing would stop them. If I were a regular part of the business world, I would want a part of that contract. What makes athletes better than everyone else? Regular people work just as hard, maybe harder.
George Siokos (Masterman Philadelphia)
Mike Trout, even though he didn't come to the Phillies, still well deserves the amount of money he has gotten and I'll end up with at the end of his career. Baseball is a tough sport, and it is almost unfair to the players as their talent gets ignored and other sports players to take the spotlight. I think Mike Trout is worth this amount of money. He is a great player and good person all around, and knowing him he will probably donate some of his money. he will definitely be a big help to the LA Angels, but would be a better help to the Phillies. Most baseball players should be paid these high salaries as baseball is a very hard sport to play as you get into higher levels and the amount of talent these players have is very much worth their pay.
Samuel Hamilton (Masterman)
Personally, I wouldn’t care if baseball disappeared from the face of the Earth never to be seen again. Basically what I'm trying to say is that I don’t care about baseball at all. While I enjoy watching (some) sports, TV shows, movies, musicians, and other forms of entertainment, I don’t believe that they are good for humans. I think this because sports professional players, actors, and musicians have no contribution to the success of humanity. While I like listening to music, the musicians aren’t helping with scientific advances or defending Earth from beings or objects from space as is with other forms of entertainment. Instead of being a musician, people could be scientists working on how sound travels. The point of this is that we are to close to driving ourselves and other creatures extinct, and we have to do our best to make up for the creatures that we’ve already driven extinct. I believe that the human race has caused too much pain as a whole to pursue anything we want. Because I believe that nobody should be paid and that we should work for a central government that gives us resources, I believe very strongly that athletes shouldn’t get paid at all. The fact that a baseball player would get paid more than the average doctor absolutely revolts me and convinces me that we’re all going to die very soon. All in all, people who don’t contribute to the success of the human race like athletes should not be paid more than people like doctors if they get paid anything at all.
Abdoul Diallo (Julia R. Masterman, Philadelphia)
I don't really follow baseball, but I am a philly fan so when I heard about the Bryce Harper trade I was pretty excited. What really made me think he was good was the amount of money he made. But Mike Trout just got 100 million more dollars than what Bryce Harper got in his deal, and that totally blows my mind. The amount of money teams are spending on just one player is insane but in my opinion, this can change the way people feel about sports altogether. I am glad that this happened because it will stop the good old saying that most teacher say to students "sports won't get you anywhere". I have never been told this because I have other plans in life but I can see how that can really hurt someone's pride. But seeing how much money a player can make just from their hard work and dedication is a very good reminder that anything is possible. Players are putting their careers on the line every time they step on the field, and if a business decides a player is worth that amount of money, then they deserve it. I don't really think anyone should talk down on a players success if you don't know what they have been through. But, I am hopeful that all the money doesn't go to waste and Mike Trout uses some of it to help other people. Hopefully all the money doesn't get to his head, and he becomes greedy. It's always great to stay humble.
Maia Keenan (Masterman, Philadelphia)
I feel kind of sad because I am from Philadelphia and Mike Trout was supposed to become a free agent next year and he was thinking about coming to the Phillies. However, I don't think any athlete, or any person deserves this much money. $430 million is way too much money for one person to get. Especially since the record was just broken 3 weeks ago by Bryce Harper with the Phillies. Trout's contract is $100 million more than Harper's with a $330 million contract. There is no way that he will need all of that money so I hope he donates it to a charity or something like that. Even though he is a great player, I don't think he deserves that much. But if there was a anyone who deserves that much, it would be Mike Trout.
Joe Bialek (Cleveland, OH)
One of the most disturbing facts about our capitalist nation is the misappropriation of funds directed to the salaries of entertainers. Everyone should agree that the value an athlete, movie star, talk-show host, team-owner, etcetera brings to the average citizen is very small. Granted, they do offer a minuscule of diversion from our daily trials and tribulations as did the jesters in the king's court during the middle ages. But to allow these entertainers to horde such great amounts of wealth at the expense of more benevolent societal programs is unacceptable. They do not provide a product or a service so why are they rewarded as such? Our society is also subjected to the "profound wisdom" of these people because it equates wealth with influence. Perhaps a solution to this problem and a alternative to defeated school levies, crumbling infrastructures, as well as all the programs established to help feed, clothe and shelter those who cannot help themselves would be to tax this undeserved wealth. Entertainers could keep 1% of the gross earnings reaped from their endeavor and 99% could be deposited into the public coffers.
Joe Bialek (Cleveland, OH)
The old ideas of the redistribution of wealth have failed, and it is time to adapt to modern-day preferences. People put their money into entertainment above everything else; isn't it time to tap that wealth? Does anyone think this will reduce the quality of entertainment? It seems to me that when entertainers received less income, the quality was much higher.
Hope A (Masterman, Philly)
I was shocked when I heard that Mike Trout was going to be paid $430 million. That is a lot of money and not really necessary for one person. He could live extravagantly with way less than that. However, if he works hard it shows he is earning every cent (even if it is a lot). Many people would love to be in his position, but he has to have a lot of talent and skill to get to that point. While this may be true, it is also unfair when you compare this experience to homeless people or someone of lesser wealth.
Zephyr Spatz (Philadelphia, @Masterman)
People say that this is too much to pay an athlete. Mainly that he doesn't need that much money, and it could be used for a better cause. Of course nobody needs that much money. But, it's unfair to say that this is an issue with the organization. It's not the responsibility or obligation of the LA Angels to use money for anything besides baseball. That responsibility lies in the hands of the government, and the lunatic president of the United States who's taking money out of social services and public needs and putting it towards the military and a pointless border wall. If the government, whose responsibility it actually is to put money towards services for people who need even a small fraction of this money was doing the proper thing, nobody would care at all about this outside of anything sports-related.
Jared Way-Gregory (Masterman, Philly)
I wasn’t surprised that a deal like this would be struck because I knew that other players would ask to make as much or more than Bryce Harper. Also because I think that it is reasonable for an athlete to be paid that much considering how much money they bring into the MLB alone, this kinda goes back to the topic of whether or not NCAA players should get paid. any athlete being paid millions is justified considering that they are being viewed by millions according to statista.com the avg person at a game is 69,487 and that’s in person the amount of people who watch it on tv is 5.6 million. Also, it being the richest contract in the history of North American sports is justified because the amount of money he brings in must be a lot considering he is ranked as the top athlete.
Ahsaan M. (Masterman, Philadelphia, PA)
I think that a player should be allowed to make as much money as desired, if a team is willing to take that chance by paying that player a certain amount of money. I mean Mike Trout is an clearly an excellent player, one of MVP caliber, but I don't think he is worth $43 million a year. There are many athletes who probably put as much work as Mike Trout does into their performance, but don't make half as much. Now, I'm not saying that we should pay all of the athletes the same amount of money, because there are clearly players who are worth more than others. I believe that some of this money that Mike Trout is making should be used to help raise awareness to these problems that are going on right now, and should be donated to charity as well.
Max Linneman (J.R. Masterman School, Philadelphia, PA)
Personally I couldn’t be more mad about the Trout trade for a couple reasons. I am a Philadelphia Phillies fan and for our outfield dream Mike Trout to sign a twelve year contract for 430 million dollars, is heartbreaking. We just signed Bryce Harper which was a huge success and made everyone happy, but we were hoping to wait two years in order for Mike Trout to go into free agency, but now that they resigned him for twelve years our dreams won’t happen. Considering Mike Trout grew up in Millville New Jersey and spent all his life being a philly sports fan it would only make sense for him to sign with the Phillies, but whenever money is involved people's choices turn quickly. Yes I do think that there are many players out there who are worth a lot of money, but really 430 million dollars is really only them trying to secure the athlete and make sure that he doesn’t go anywhere else. If we have also gathered him, our outfielders would all be MVPs at a part of their life with Andrew McCutchen, Bryce Harper, and Mike Trout. We should’ve had every right to believe that Trout would come to the Phillies because he is a huge philly sports fan and comes to most Eagles games but out of nowhere came 430 million dollars. I think that the amount of money that is put into sports though could be used for better things like giving teachers a proper salary and providing the school system with money to let kids have a great education. Those are just my thoughts on the Mike Trout deal.
Natalia Bieszczad (Masterman, Philadelphia)
I think that $430 million dollars is a crazy amount of money to pay anyone! I understand that Mike Trout is an amazing baseball player but he doesn’t have superpowers! $430 million dollars for 10 years, equals to about $117,000 every day. Instead of paying one person to play on a baseball team, so much money, we could use this money to help cancer research, or work towards slowing down climate change. No matter how good Mike Trout is, my opinion is that this is way too much money that could be used for more important causes.
Jack Dunphy (Philly, Masterman)
There is not an athlete in the entire world that deserves that sum of money of any sum that close. He is definitely the best player in the MLB, but this type of money is unheard of for any sport. When Bryce Harper signed his deal which was $100 million less, I still thought that was too much money. When I saw this deal I was made for two different reasons which were he was not ever coming to the Phillies and how much he would be making. I do not think athletes should be making any more than $225 million and that might even be pushing it. The max contract for any sport should be $225 million and that should not be used unless its a more than ten year deal. Also in order to get that contract you need to be the best of the best such as Mike Trout. The scary part is that Trout is almost making double this amount and it's absurd to me why anyone could make that much from a sport. It is now more likely we start to see more huge contracts close to this money, more likely a basketball contract.
Ami S (Masterman, Philadelphia)
I don’t know much about baseball so I don’t how good Mike Trout is at baseball but 43 million dollars a year? That’s an insane amount of money. Just because he hits a ball more times than most people doesn’t mean he’s worth that much. He makes almost 1,000 times as much as the average person. That doesn’t even take into account how people in sports are paid off of talent and the average person is paid off of the work they did. Mike Trout could flop terribly, still means he’ll make more money than I probably ever will. The fact he’s making more than a dollar a second while there are veterans living on our streets without homes sickens me. This is just a symptom of the problem- the wage gap.
Rachel Widjaja (Masterman, Philadelphia)
Although athletes practice hard and have to train an indescribable amount of time, I don’t think they deserve half a billion dollars. Of course, they can have a big salary to pay off for their hard effort and training period, but to have one person hold all of that money in his own will is a little over the top. This deal feels more like something they are trying to break a record with rather than actually considering a deal with someone. I don’t think anyone deserves half a billion dollars. Not even if they were the best athlete ever. Getting that much amount of money should be coming from long hard work instead of a deal you can deal on in an amount of time shorter than someone’s job experience. Even if Mike Trout was to accept this deal, my hopes are that he donates some of it to important causes or he uses the money wisely as an adult.
Benga Oni (JR Masterman, Philadelphia PA)
In my opinion, the $430 million dollar deal isn’t worth it, no matter how good he is. MVP awards or not, that’s a lot of money they’re putting the hands of one person. There are people starving in the streets, with nothing to eat and nowhere to live. There are people who have multiple jobs just to get food on the table every day. There are many other examples where someone would need more money. No athlete should be paid that highly over 10 years if they don’t need it. That’s half a billion dollars just for playing baseball. Even if he does get injured, it doesn’t cost as much as $400 million dollars for his medical bills. What will he even spend that much money on? This even exceeds the highest amount paid from any North American sport. It’s just not fair to everyone else.
Kate Chin (Masterman, Philadelphia, PA)
I’m not much of a follower of the MLB but I don’t think that any athlete should have a contract with that much money. No matter how good of an athlete they are, that money could be used for a better cause that will help lots of people instead of being condensed and given to one person. $430 million is so much for just one person. The money should be evenly distributed amongst people who actually need it. Even though he may be a good athlete, his actions are definitely not worth $430 million. They should make the contract involve less money.
Yehuda Mahlab (Masterman - Philadelphia, PA)
I am not surprised, that of all people, Mike Trout made this record. He is an outstanding athlete. We could tell this since he was a rookie in the MLB 6 years ago. He has had a total of 140 home runs in his career. At this rate he will be able to break 350 home runs by the end of his contract. This would mean he has hit the 79th most home runs ever. He has a hard work ethic and is willing to do anything to help get his team the win. But, I do not believe he is worth $430 million because he is just playing baseball. That absurd amount of money is something I would like to give to someone who is help innovating society. He is getting so much money just to play a game. I think we could be using that money to help people in need, or help better our government. Also, out of all sports why is baseball having the biggest pay. It is the least hard-working sport. Why not pay a soccer player that money. They run about and down 100 yards without getting breaks, timeouts and usually a substitution.
Olivia Garvin (J.R. Masterman, Philadelphia,PA)
I feel that for a good baseball player, this is too much money. Even though he is a really good player, no one should be paid this much. It isn’t fair to anyone at all. Yes, some people think he has worked hard for it, but in the end, it is just too much money. I don’t think anyone should be paid this much of money because most likely they would just use it for them when they should give it to a charity of some sort. If I was being paid this amount of money I would have done like I said and donate money. I love baseball and any type of sports really, but in the end I just think it’s too much money for 10 years. There isn’t much to say except that maybe he should have been paid a little less instead.
Natalia Bieszczad (Masterman, Philadelphia)

My reaction to the record-breaking deal is, ”If one stupendous athlete can get that much money for a 10-year contract, why can’t the rookies get more?” I’m saying this because a rookie athlete by the name of Zion Lateef Williamson is currently playing for the Duke Blue Devils and has Lebron James coming to his games and watching them. Zion is also the trending and is projected to be the first overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. That’s saying something, especially if you have Lebron coming to your games and watching you play, when it isn’t the other way around. I think that Zion should be deserving that amount of money just to play basketball games. I personally think this because Zion might be able to do something that will totally shake the NBA up. Next thing you’ll know, everybody might be signing Williamson. Now I’m not saying that Zion will become the next Jordan, no because nobody can compare to Jordan. I’m saying is that Williamson is a hard-working athlete, who deserves to be given a contract like the one Mike Trout has been offered, but not that much money. Williamson would be good with at least $260 million, while the rest he can donate to the homeless or charity.
Sivan Frankel (Masterman School, Philadelphia, PA)
I find it utterly disgusting that Mike Trout is being paid $430 million just to play a sport. Sure, he’s talented at baseball, but is he helping the world? No. I enjoy watching baseball, and I think it’s fine that he plays baseball for a living. However, I don’t think that someone should be earning an average of $43 million per year to play baseball on TV, especially when there are so many other ways that this money could be better spent. For example, I know that teachers that work for the Philadelphia school district earn livable wages, but not a huge amount. $430 million could give every Philly teacher an amazing raise, which they all definitely deserve for the extremely important work that they are doing – educating our country’s future. $430 million could be given to first responders who work extremely hard, sacrificing relaxation and family time, to save lives every single day. It could be given to those who spend countless hours volunteering and doing community service, putting others ahead of them without thinking about being rewarded, even though they absolutely deserve a reward for their work. All of these people deserve the money, but I don’t see Mike Trout doing any of that.
Ian Birley (Masterman Philadelphia)
I personally think that a small fraction of entertainment shouldn't be worth that much money even though it is. I don't think that any one person should be paid that much money for something that isn't helping the the world in a logical way.
Nicolas Dorazio (J.R. Masterman School, Philadelphia PA)
$430 million. That is way too much money for a single person to have. Who even needs that much money? HOW, can you spend $430 million. How. Just explain that question. I feel like people only care about money and fame now. It is so sad, to see how far the human race has fallen. We once walked the earth, trying to stay alive, and now we hit a ball with a bat and run some, and then get $430 million. I’m sure there are many people out there who would disagree with my opinion, but that’s the beauty of an opinion: no one has to agree. At least three quarters of that money to those who actually need it, like people that are homeless or living in poverty. Why does an already rich man need even more money, when there are so many out there who could not spare a dime? No one needs $430 million, and while it might be nice to have, it is completely unnecessary.
Ona Stocovaz (J.R Masterman)
I think that $430 million is always too much money, no matter who or what the situation is. I think that it is ridiculous how sports players have a price attached to them and teams buy them from one another, that is absurd. I know that playing their sport is how people earn money, but that is something else I have difficulty understanding, If you want to play the sport bad enough, you don’t have to be paid to have fun while playing that sport. The idea of someone having a price tag on their head is disturbing, it reminds me of the 1600s when slaves were sold to people like animals. I understand how it is different than that as well, but every time I hear that a baseball player or any other player has been “sold” to a different team, I cringe a little because of how strange it is. Also, when someone wants to play a sport and it’s their passion, they shouldn’t have to be paid. I believe this because, think about it, when you are having fun and doing something you enjoy, are you need to be paid for having fun? Every day, people have fun all over the world and they don’t get paid, I play softball, and I don’t get paid for playing softball, so why should professionals be paid to play a sport they like?
Julian Atacan (Masterman: Philadelphia)
The crazy thing is I am not even surprised by this. Mike Trout is probably the best baseball player right now. He is so young and his potential is through the roof. Mike Trout has many MVPS, all star game appearances, he leads so many categories and he no doubt is up there for greatest players of all time. Even though I am not surprised I do find it unacceptable that baseball players are getting this kind of money when it could save lives, help our environment and so many other things to help our world. I believe that our world and the people that live in it health matter more than one baseball player. After The recent deal with the Phillies getting Bryce Harper for 330 MIllion for 13 years and now Angles keeping Trout for another 12 years for 430 MIllion. Anything is possible in the MLB right now. This season is going to be really exciting to watch after all the trades and the MLB will make a lot of money this year. Overall I am certainly not surprised by this move Mike Trout never seems to let down and that’s why the Angles made this insane deal, but it is sad because this one deal could’ve done so much for our lives and world.
Kaya Perelman (Masterman, Philadelphia)
I think that $430 million is definitely way too much money for a baseball player. Even though I do not know much about baseball, I don't think that any athlete should get paid that much. Nobody should get a salary that high unless they are doing a very important job, such as saving peoples' lives. A baseball player does not deserve that much money, and they are not really saving anyone's life, people just watch baseball for entertainment. I honestly don't see why Mike Trout should be paid that much, as you could take that money and do something much more useful with it. There are so many more people who need that much money, but the ones who get it are the ones that already have enough money, and they don't even deserve it. There is no way that any professional athlete should get paid $430 million, and even if they do get an overly high salary, they should try their best to donate as much of it as they can or at least put it to good use.
Sophia (Masterman)
The fact that someone is able to make four hundred and thirty million dollars over a 10 year contract is absurd. Nobody should be worth that much, and what is this person going to do with all of this money anyway? Personally, I am not really into sports, but just because someone plays baseball and is a source of entertainment, shouldn’t mean that they are worth so much. There are endless possibilities of what you could do with 430 million dollars instead of just giving it to one person. Many people out there work so hard, and they barely make enough money to put food on the table, yet someone who is a sports athlete makes so much more than them. When I read this article, it reminded me of the lottery. Usually, there is that one lucky person who wins millions or sometimes hundreds of millions of dollars. Before that person dies, will they be able to spend all of that money? I doubt it, and this is the same thing as this contract. Instead of helping millions of people who are barely making it, they decide to give one person so much money that they cannot even use before they run out of air.
Justin T. Liu (Masterman; in Philly)
I think that 430 million dollars are too much for a player, even if Mr. Michael Trout is really good, I don’t think he deserves that much money. Baseball athletes don’t do a lot when in their job except to play against each other and provide lots of entertainment. Other than that, they don’t much at work. I think that the max any baseball player can get is maybe 350 million. All that money given to a single guy? Seriously, we could have used that money to house the homeless, or help hospitals or charities keep on going.
Azalea Derrickson (Masterman School,Philly)
In my opinion, there are many athletes who are worth that much money, but I think few deserve it. Really everyone should be worthless with no amount, but some of these athletes are too entitled and selfish. I am pretty upset Trout didn't join the Phillies, just because he could have joined Harper and he could carry our team. If I were to choose athletes who would deserve that much money I would go with athletes who work their butt’s off and actually deserve that money; Serena Williams, Simone Biles, Mike Trout, Pele, Jackie Robinson, etc.
Lily Sklaver (J.R Masterman School, Philadelphia)
When Bryce Harper signed with the Philadelphia Phillies for $330 million dollars, I thought it was an insane amount of money to spend on one person. But the players who are getting this much money devote most of their life and time to the team they are playing for. Players with dedication and who work hard deserve to get paid millions of dollars. Players pick up their entire lives to play for these teams, so anyone who is willing to deal with the commitment and sacrifices deserves the money and everything else that comes with. Mike Trout is an exceptional player and earned the $430 million dollars, I mean, after all, he's playing for the Angels for the next decade.
Anya Finlay (Masterman- Philadelphia, PA)
I think that the contract is unrealistic. I do not follow baseball, so I do not know what kind of player Mike Trout is, but I do not think that any athlete is worth $430 million. I really love sports and I enjoy playing them but $430 million is a lot of money. Many people work hard saving other’s lives, researching cures and diseases and devoting their lives to the safety and health of other people. These people rarely make $430 million their entire life, let alone ten years. I think that although the sports industry makes a lot of money and the athletes work extremely hard, the contract was a little overboard. There are many people around the world who do not have enough food, clothes or a roof to live under. Instead of giving hundreds of millions of dollars to a single baseball player I think that we should be helping those who really need it.
Jessica H. (J.R. Masterman School, Philadelphia, PA)
As someone who isn't into baseball, I think $430 million is more than a lot to give to an athlete. I'm not saying that Mike Trout doesn't work hard, but the money could go towards something more important. There are so many workers in the world who study and work so hard only to get a small pay. Why is that? Police officers and firefighters risk their lives every day to help random people that they don't even know. Most of the time they get overlooked. I think police officers and firefighters should get paid more for their duties in simply just helping the community. In addition, there are a lot of people who are struggling to fight illnesses, and it would be great if we could use the $430 million to spend in research. I do not watch baseball, and I trust that Mike Trout is an outstanding player. However, I think that money could be spent on something more major.

WOW! 430 million is a lot of money! And just for playing sports. The money could be going other places though . . .

Mike Trout may be a great player but no one deserves to make such a large sum of money. The 430 million could be used for so many other purposes to better the quality of life somewhere. I don’t particularly care about baseball but no human should have enough power to be paid so much money. The money could be used for so many other things that are underfunded. He could be making a more reasonable amount consider some people don’t even make what he does in a day than a week in somewhere like certain African countries. Our world is dying at an intense rate without some proper funding, just so that some people with a higher position due to their recognition in sports can live a higher class life.
Molly Flaxman (Masterman School Philadelphia)
Mike Trout is obviously an amazing baseball player. He has worked so hard his whole life to perfect one sport, and it all pays off now. Although he has worked hard for this and deserves the attention, $430 million dollars is a lot of money. The average person only makes 100,000 a year, which is just a small fraction of his salary. He works hard as an individual, but there are many other hard-working people in different occupation fields. In addition, he isn’t only making $430 million. He also promotes top brands, has his own signature shoe, and is an all-around icon. This adds on hundreds of millions of dollars. In all honesty, he is not worth every penny. He definitely deserves a lot of money as the best modern baseball player, but in reality, a lot of his money comes with the luck of being famous.
Tino K. (Masterman Philadelphia)
I do not think any athlete is worth hundreds of millions of dollars. No one should be paid hundred of millions of dollars to play a sport. Right now in the world, there is probably someone who works much harder than Mike Trout to play sports but is not getting paid nowhere near Mike Trout. With all that money, thousands of homeless could have a better life. It is unfair that just because someone is really good at something they get paid an absurd amount of money when they probably are not the best.

that it is too much money that wins and it is better to give part of that money to people who need gracias por leer

I think is too much money that wins and it’s better give part of that money to people who need it
Amalia T. (Masterman, Philadelphia)
I do not think that any athlete deserves such a high pay. $430 million is a lot of money and could probably house and feed lots of homeless Americans for a couple year instead of just one already rich person. Not only this, but athletes also do not contribute anything to our society except for a few hours of fun once in a while. This money could be better spent on people who are more deserving of it such as teachers who educate our whole country and do not get a very high pay at all. It sort of angers me that one individual that does not need and does not deserve so much money get so much, but people who both need and deserve that money do not get any.
Michael Fenerty (Julia R. Masterman)
I'm a pretty big MLB fan, and Mike Trout is my favorite player in the league. He is from New Jersey, and always comes to watch Eagles games. He's a great guy, great baseball player, and deserves to have the biggest contract in the MLB. However, nobody should have this much money. 430 million dollars is enough to get rid of homelessness in any city. 430 million dollars is enough to save African children from dying. Nobody should have this much money. It is unfair. Mike Trout is my favorite player. But he shouldn't be making that much. It just upsets me with what else we could do with that money. Like saving lives. However, Mike Trout is a great guy. I am sure he will donate some of his money to charity. But if we would pay him $200 million, and $230 million dollars would go to charity, then that would be better. It’s just how money works, the more money people can get, the greedier they get.

@Michael Fenerty i bet you 430 million dollars that the starving people in Africa will last no longer than a month
Jonnah Berger (J.R. Masterman, Philadelphia, P.A.)
I think that it is completely crazy that Mike Trout a contract that was worth almost a half a billion dollars. He is one of the best players in the MLB but I don’t think a player should be paid that much. I think in general no one should be paid that much, he is being paid about 36 million dollars a year. He is being paid about 68 dollars a minute for the next 12 years. He is making more than a dollar per second. That is such a stupid amount of money. If I was being paid that much I would not keep it all for my self I would donate a lot to charity and give a lot to my family. If anybody should be paid that much it should be UFC athletes or football players. This is because they literally put their bodies on the line for the sport they love. Plus if they get injured they have money to pay medical bills.
Liam S. (Masterman, Philadelphia)
I really don’t know that much about baseball or baseball players so I don’t really care about this issue, but 430 MILLION. In 10 years. That’s 43 million per year! Thats around $117,808 a DAY. I do understand he is a great player and all but the 2nd largest sport contract was 365 million. That is around 3/4ths of what Mike Trout got and I still think that was way too much.
Julia Fede (J R Masterman [Philadelphia, PA])
@Liam S. I totally agree. It's crazy how somebody who just plays a sport they love for a living could make $117,808 per day, while there are people in the world who are getting paid under minimum wage.
Dylan (Walla Walla)
i personally dont think anybody is worth that much but i think for money purposes its smart because just him will create is team well more money then they will be spending on just him. he is a player that will create win s for the team which will push them into the playoffs and also he is a fan favorite player so people will come to just watch him
Michelle Diaz (Walla Walla, Washington)
He’s a very lucky man to be getting paid that amount of money. No athlete gets paid that amount except him. Everyone works hard to get paid a good amount and some people are happy with what they get. On the other hand some of this money could be used for other things, yeah why not he should get paid a good amount, every athlete should. But again it’s a little too much.
Teddy Santos (Julia R. Masterman)
I do think this athlete is worth that much money but I am mad because I wanted him to come to philly but of course he doesn’t. There was so much hope that he would come to the Phillies but he sadly decided not to. Mike Trout is a really good player, his gp last year was 140, his ab last year was 471 and he had 79 rbis last year. That's not all that he has done but he has an average .312. I really want him on the Phillies so I am pretty mad about him signing a 10 year extension.
David Howard (walla walla washington)
Ya,Mike is a good player but this is just outrages. 430 mill. in 10 years some people do not even make that amount of money in there hole life time some families do not make that all together even if u put all of there earnings from there hole life it may not even make 1/3 that amount. so i do not think this is OK at all.
Ashton Liskey (walla walla WA.)
Alot of athletes get million dollar deals all the time. I dont think any athlete should make $430 million from a sport. People who work hard everyday in buisness dont make close to this so it makes it unfair. $10 million would be reasonable but almost half a billion is ridiculous.
Reza Chity-Guevara (Masterman, Philadelphia, PA)
Since I am not a baseball fan I honestly do not really care about this deal. I think it is a good thing for this athlete yet I don't think any athlete is worth $430 million dollars. This really is supposed to be about the talent and skill of the athlete, so in a sense this never will be worth it as talent and skill are invaluable. Also though I say talent is invaluable it is and isn't worth the price of $430 million dollars. No one deserves tons of money for talent which is immeasurable. Talent should not be bought but rather used for others or to pursue a passion. Life is important and you should not have the ultimate goal of riches and fame.
Evan Castillo (walla walla)
I dont think any athlete exept Ronaldo should be worth that much money. $430 million dollars is enough to live on for the rest of my life, like I could drop out of school right now and i would still get giggie with it. Anyways why is he this much money becuase a good player and he got clout but i dont think anyy athlete should be that much money.
Gilbert Espana (wahi walla walla washington)
i do think that athelte should be worth much more as $430 million dollar deal and how most athelete dont get that much and so probly in 10 years i think some people will get more or less but some will think that people want them to get less money but some want to give more money
Miriam (Walla Walla Washington)
Honestly it’s really not a big deal. No athlete is worth so much but then again people spend so much to go see them play, which makes no difference. It pays off other people to. And he deserves the money he’s offered just like any other job you don’t get to choose how much you want to get payed you just take whatever .
anonymous (arizona)
I do not think any athelete should be worth that much money. $430 million dollars is more than enough for anybody to have. I think athletes become too full of themselves once they have a lot of money and a lot of the times aren’t very humble.
joe (chicago)
there is no athlete worth that much money 430milllion$ becuse he is just another athlet and even tho he is a high caleber athlete he is not gurrenteed to perform like one. Also he could easly get injured and that would be a waste of money .so i do not think anoyone should get paid that mush.
Devin (Illinois)
No athlete is worth $430 million. Muhammad Ali, some say the best boxer to ever live, made $80 million. Lionel Messi, maybe the GOAT of soccer, makes $111 million. From my experience playing baseball, you don't need much training. All you need is very good hand-eye coordination and strength training for 5 years. With boxing, you have to train every day to keep your strength, conditioning, and hand-eye coordination. It takes years to be nearly as good as the top boxers today. Finally, if you play soccer, you know how much training you have to do a day to be the best on your team. Having good foot skills is very hard to achieve, you have to jog most days to survive in the field, and you need to be smart with the ball. I've been playing soccer at a young age and I still don't believe I'm that good. But even with the time you do for training for any sport, you aren't worth $430 million.
Bryan (Walla Walla)
@Devin In Mike Trouts eight years with the Angles he has more hits than Pete Rose did in his first eight years. He also has more runs the Ricky Henderson did in his first eight years. And finally he has more Home runs than Barry Bonds did in his first eight years and Barry Bonds is perhaps one of the best hitters of all time. Also Mike Trout is the only athlete that Nike has given a signature shoe to since Ken Griffey jr. so in conclusion Mike Trout is worth all the money.
