Amy Schumer Doesn’t Care What You Think (That Much)

I hope she is smart enough to realize what Dave Chappelle said was not a complement. Now, Chappelle is funny...and smart...
JMS (virginia)
I haven't seen her pregnancy stuff. That's because I stopped watching her when she publicly jumped down the throat of a teenage report who had the gaul to say something about "spending the night" with her. I thought it was funny and clever, like something she would have said herself. Instead of handling the fan privately and letting him know why it wasn't right for him to mock her and letting him take the post down(of course she can mock anyone she wants), she publicly lashed out at him like a snake, and humiliated him. Very revealing to me--Core of confidence is more like core of anger.
Deborah Hauser (NY)
What prompted the author to publish a “correction” changing “spoof”to “tribute”? A correction is usually reserved for typographical and factual errors. The Beyonce skit was a spoof or parody. And it was humorous. It cannot be characterized as a tribute. It is troubling that the author’s opinion was corrected in such a way.
Gigi (New York NY)
She’s the absolute best and such a wonderful example of what women can accomplish when they charge ahead and ignore the haters.
CP (NJ)
I love Amy - her vulnerability, her intelligence, her warped sense of humor and, yes, her looks. Beauty comes from within, and she has it in multiples. It's said that if you have any sort of personality, there are those who will love you and those who will hate you. The bigger the personality, the more extreme those reactions will be - but, in my opinion, the more interesting the person becomes. Ms. Schumer is extremely interesting, and because of that (and much else, of course) I wish her and her husband and future child(ren) happiness, health and the fortitude to stand up against the onslaught of garbage that will be hurled at them just for being who they are.
Boregard (NYC)
Un funny. The comedy world knows the truth about her...she steals jokes. Think Dane Cook and Carlos Mencia. They know. Some talk about it, but most, due to her Hollywood friends, don't. So many better female comics out there...truly unique and using original material. But with Schumer, we have the same old, white, blonde, cliched Hollywood by-product. But with a potty-mouth. Upon her "return", we can expect a barrage of old, cliched, worn out pregnancy jokes, along with faux-edgy, "I love my baby, but..." jokes. Yawn. Her routine is as worn out as these edgy pregnancy photo shoots.
Jeffipoo (Ventura)
I (heart emoji) Amy. Keep breaking doors!! Running in boots while pregnant...classic!
Just Wondering (ME)
Full disclosure: this reader has never seen, heard or read about Amy Schumer, and never got to the end of this piece on the subject by Jason Zinoman. It's like the subject of Trump. Or adolescence. Or like waiting for a boil to rupture. (Think of Job.) What can one say, besides This too shall pass? Just wondering
Chanakya (Brooklyn< NY(USA))
Do people care what she thinks or looks like?
jimfaye (Ellijay, GA)
There is a lot of help out here for morning sickness, and it's ben known aobut for over a hundred years! I just shuddered when I read that Amy threw up SHRIMP and ...... OMG, honey, change your diet today to one full of raw and cooked veggies and fruits! Get your diet green and clean and you will be clean and sweet inside before you know it and you will FEEL so much better! Eat simple and whole foods with lots of raw salads, cooked veggies, and veggie soups. Cut out rich, fatty, gluten-rich and sugary foods. You will feel like a healthy BIRD! Green inside means Clean inside. You are what you eat and what you can digest! This works if you just try it. See Nature Cure, The Kingston Clinic, Edinburgh!
Bob (Myrtle Beach, SC)
It's nice when people dont care. Always makes for a better community.
Rev. E. M. Camarena, PhD (Hell's Kitchen)
Cute headline. In my experience, what people think of them is generally the only thing that comedians ever give any serious thought to. https://emcphd.wordpress.com
Olivia (NYC)
I wish I had ben spared those photos.
John Wright (Arizona)
I don’t understand why the author is censoring here. A “word that rhymes with truck?” What are we, 7 years old? As though we don’t all of us - every single one - have the actual, accurate sentence in our heads anyway! Come on. Please just report to us what was said... I’m begging you. I graduated high school 20 years ago!
Martin Veintraub (East Windsor, NJ)
I wish she could give Chuck a hand in Congress. I think we bought the wrong Shumer. These days all the laughs coming out of the Senate are ironic. In the "this is what the government has come to?" category. Tone-deaf in the extreme. Now I want to see some pics of Mitch McConnell running naked through a park....pursued by a bloodthirsty ob determined to tar and feather him, then ride him out of DC on a rail. Ha. Ha ha. Ha ha ha. Oh yeah, we were talking about Amy Shumer. BTW my tribe does not call that body type "fat". It's saftig.
Garth (NYC)
One of the most self important frauds in hollywood. Utterly untalented.
Al Kilo (Ithaca NU)
Foul mouth not funny.
Amie Schantz (Arlington, MA)
I think Amy Schumer is funny, which is what I want from comedy. I am not looking for issues to excoriate her for on social media. I am glad she is able to continue to work without paying much attention to those who do wish to do so. I was never upset by the rudeness of Don Rickles comedy, and I didn’t feel duped by Stephen Colbert not really being the character from the Colbert Report.
Anna Near (Austin, Texas)
I don’t know how a woman can be educated and not melancholy ... we should all wear it like a badge
Len (Pennsylvania)
She is a smart, creative and very funny person, as well as a real screen presence in her films. Great profile article - thank you!
Ellen Tabor (New York City)
I have always loved her bravery even when I didn't always love her jokes.
bill (Madison)
I'm very pleased to read that she doesn't care what I think, because I don't care. So I guess we're both quite powerful.
Opal Smith (Florida)
I do not find her stand up routines particularly funny, she tends to be so blatant with out the subtle twists that spark laughter ( in me) . But I did like much of her TV show, and I had very low expectations of her movie I Feel Pretty. I was pleasantly surprised what an enjoyable movie it was and I thought she did a great job as an actress. So even though I do not always laugh at her jokes and that movie with Goldie Hawn was horrid, there is something about her unique pluckiness I really like.
Susan Murphy (Hollywood California)
I love Amy Schumer's stand up. My son the misogynist (how proud am I) hates her. I laugh hysterically at everything she says. He accuses her of stealing jokes. Each sees something different. Amy to me is mainstream female comedy. She says what women think and don't say in the same way that male comedians do. It probably seems threatening if you're a man used to having your own perspective constantly validated. I think that's why men try to invalidate her. I say right on Amy! Don't stop!!! How many times have women heard jokes at their expense and been told "get a sense of humor!" Amy feels like the female version of that where some of her jokes are at a man's expense. There's no research on her throw-up disease because men don't get it. It's hilarious because its true. Get a sense of humor guys.
David (Toronto)
I haven't followed Amy Schumer all that closely, but whenever I've happened on her stand-up on YouTube, I've been gobsmacked by her brazen, "one-of-the-boys" persona, her shockingly hilarious observations, her vocal virtuosity, and her willingness to go right up to the line of good taste and beyond (comedy is supposed to shock, turn the world upside down, even offend). I've also been struck by the almost unanimously sour comments by male trolls, who obviously hate a strong, in your face woman acting fearlessly and skewering male pretensions. Go figure! You're never going to hear me put a woman down, especially for making it in a very traditionally male art form and wiping the floor with the competition. Go, Amy! You are beautiful.
Observor (Backwoods California)
My niece had that when she was pregnant. I think there are pills Amy can take for it. 12 Angry Men Inside Amy Schumer will stay on my TiVo forEVER.
Kimberly S (Los Angeles)
She looks so honestly Madonnaesque... I do appreciate this lady and her humor, she has proven her worth and will continue to do so...or not. I think she would be a great director...plus it adds years to your career......all the best!
Bobb (San Fran)
Schumer needs to do a cameo with her uncle, I don't know what. Democrats need to be funny again, after Al Franken and all these Me-too.
Kleav (NYC)
@Bobb Not uncle--first cousin once removed.
Thomas (New York)
Delightful article. And great photos. I love the humor in them, and how much her hair resembles the Spanish moss.
S (Vancouver)
I liked "I'm So Pretty" even though her standup isn't my style (and I didn't catch much of her show as I don't have tv). I think its real sin was that it needed a little more work, more tightening up. I find that's the case for a lot of popular movies, and it's weird. Similar to what's going on with books... they never bring in a good outside editor anymore. The conclusion seems to be, if it'll succeed by making money as it is, why make it better? But there was a lot of great stuff in "I'm So Pretty." And while I don't think its message absolutely fit what we need in this time, it also seems like the height of hypocrisy for our culture to be stating that looks don't matter in any way, as every segment of our culture seems to be getting even more looks-obsessed... body positivity, and similar changes, are finally making progress, but run into the endless catch 22 that celebrating diverse beauty is still all about beauty and there's always going to be some people/forms left out--No amount of call-outs is going to change that. It's still worth making progress, but you can't attack everything that isn't perfect, because that perfection will never exist--beauty will always be a paradoxical subject.
Jubilee133 (Prattsville, NY)
"In show business, she said, she now knows what it’s like to be cool and not cool: “Being cool is powerful in this industry, but there’s nothing more powerful than not giving a” — and here she used a word that rhymes with truck." That was such a "cool" way of sharing vulgarity! Take ya long to think that up? How about the NYT pretending to conduct itself as if school age children read the paper. Now, one can argue that children today already hear profanities daily, and that therefore "witty" journalists and editors can use a ruse to print profanities without really doing so. How chic. How about you don't print it at all. Pretend that Schumer's comment was related to issues which the NYT is careful never to share with its readership, Like the Danish satirical cartoons about the Prophet Muhammad.
John M (Connecticut)
I find this to be an astonishing objection, since that quote both perfectly characterizes Schumer and captures the core idea of the article. To leave it out would gut the profile. A coarser - and arguably cooler - publication would simply have printed it verbatim.
tony zito (Poughkeepsie, NY)
@Jubilee133 Do you think school age children haven't heard the F word before???
Nicholas (Manhattan)
I absolutely LOVE Amy Schumer! It's unfortunate - and very typically human - that she hears and absorbs the criticism over (at least in my perception) the far greater amount of praise. Amy, if you read this just know that that you are fantastic and talented and wonderful and you will be a great mom, too!
Amy (Canada)
@Nicholas Thanks.
Kevin (nj)
Amy, my wife and I love your stuff and we love you ! pleeeease never stop !
Jackson (Southern California)
Ms. Schumer is an amazingly authentic talent -- funny and brave and vulnerable and strong. And gifted. Really gifted. More power to her.
Michael (Hollywood, CA)
I am among the many dudes out there who are crazy about Amy (and I especially miss her TV show -- please come back!). By The Way : I was fortunate enough to catch METEOR SHOWER when it played on Broadway -- hilarious, silly, amazingly entertaining.
Ohana (Bellevue, WA)
I'm just glad she's shedding light on the brutality of severe morning sickness / hg, like Kate Middleton has. It changed my life, and I feel like no one understands. Amy helps make it a little easier for people to understand.
NSH (Chester)
@Ohana I hear you Ohana. I had it with BOTH pregnancies.
Vickie (Woodbury)
@Ohana My mother had that with each of her 5 pregnancies, but of course it didn't have a name back then. She threw up for the whole nine months. It made her as mean as a snake. I was little and didn't know if she was mad about being pregnant, mad at herself for vomiting or mad at me. It stayed with me. I've never been pregnant nor had any desire to be.
QAGal (Seattle)
@Ohana My bff had this with both of her pregnancies. It was ghastly. I remember reading about it and seeing that a cure was therapeutic abortion. I didn’t experience it with my pregnancy, but I am so sorry for women who have it. Hello, researchers? Also, excuse me while I digress because I don’t know your politics, but anti abortion activists often make it sound like pregnancy is easy peasy and not something that messes with one’s ability to continue to work, go to school, etc. Also, health care isn’t free and neither are maternity clothes.
J Barrymore (USA)
Well that’s good because I do my best not to think of her at all.
Dadof2 (NJ)
I keep wanting to like Amy Schumer, but 99% of the time I just don't find her funny. I don't find most stand-ups funny. I don't laugh and get uncomfortable. It's not that they break barriers that bothers me, but discussing ones genitalia and evacuation functions in relentless endless unpleasant detail just doesn't make me laugh. Sarah Silverman and Michelle Wolf elicit the same reaction. I'm not as familiar with the current crop of male stand-ups, but they seem to be swimming in the same cesspool. I'm not a prude--I grew up on George Carlin and Cheech&Chong both of whom could be gross but were able to make me laugh, a lot. It is (or should be) that an iron-clad rule of comedy is: Does it make me laugh? Period. These folks don't pass that simple bar. I'm reminded constantly of Fran Lebowitz's wry observation: "Spilling your guts is exactly as charming as it sounds." While Lebowitz was speaking alliteratively, Amy Schumer has proven it quite literally.
Jim (Mill Valley, California)
Thank you, Dadof2. Comedy, as defined by everyone from Seth Rogen, Michelle Wolf (and Amy Schumer) is a mud wrestling match. It you like getting dirty, jump in. Breaking boundaries doesn't always have to lead to the toilet bowl.
t
@Dadof2 Alliteratively? Perhaps you mean: figuratively?
Mike (London, UK)
@Dadof2 I get that - the only comedians that work for me atm are Dylan Moran for his wide-ranging cynicism and Bill Bailey for his musical humour.
L (NYC)
Amy, we love you! Don't forget that it's always the trolls who are the loudest -- and who have the most time on their hands.
alan Hays (MOnroe, LA)
She's now an icon. Hang in there, woman! If the world didn't love you, the haters would move on.
EarthCitizen (Earth)
There is a wry honesty and vulnerability to Amy's wit, in some ways similar to Letterman. Godspeed, Amy, so appreciate your earthy and genuine talent. Soon you won't be vomiting so much.
M (US)
Funny, refreshing, not afraid to go somewhere new -- we love you Amy Schuner!
Todd C (Toronto)
Funny in the entire article you don't mention the enormous backlash to her Trump attacks. It is as if losing half her fan base was an insignificant detail not worth discussing.
Pim (Fair Haven, NJ)
I have never seen her stand-up, but now I will. Great profile. Kudos to Mr. Zinoman.
jazzme2 (Grafton MA)
Amy is very cool refreshingly so.
John D (San Diego)
All right, Amy Schumer! I remember when she was funny.
Ralph Dratman (Cherry Hill, NJ)
Very important Amy Schumer keeps working. We need her more than ever.
rich (Montville NJ)
Stopped reading after the first two paragraphs. Has the New York Times devolved into a mix of People magazine and Howard Stern?
Cathy (CT)
Love you Amy Schumer! Your comedy, your looks, your unapologetic confidence. Keep doing what you're doing, evolving and trying new things...and best of luck at the mom thing, it's hard as hell.
Kathleen Oakland (Easy Bay)
You go girl! You are terrific. Please do not expose yourself to toxic social media it is not worth it. I know you will be a great mother. Hang in there with the nausea. The things we do for love.
Nancy G (MA)
I don't care what she thinks either.
North (Seattle)
@Nancy G But yet you felt the need to tell everyone. Maybe others don't care that you don't care.
David (Binghamton, NY)
I happen to think that much or even most of Schumer's material is hysterical. I also think that, politically, her humor is spot on. She attacks sexism with insight, precision and, of course, humor. I only have two main objections to her. One is that her attitude about sex and human bodies, in general, is a bit crass and juvenile. The other is her unfortunate willingness to body-shame men. Call me old fashioned, but my kind of feminism is not about stooping to the level of men who body-shame women but, in contrast, rising above the level of such toxic attitudes about both women's and men's bodies and embracing respect for every body, in whatever form it happens to take.
Sparky (Brookline)
Amy Schumer is an incredibly rare comedian. She tells jokes that can make a person laugh and wince at the same time, and she is a female. She also proves Jon Stewart's often quoted saying that "the only sin in comedy is telling a joke that is not funny".
Natasha (San Diego)
The running naked in boots while pregnant photo is just the greatest thing! Thank you, Amy, for being joyful in your own body. It is inspiring!
Georges (Ottawa)
@Natasha Deformed and overwheight. The American ideal.
C Wolfe (Bloomington IN)
@Georges Did you miss the "pregnant" part, Monsieur? Pregnancy is not a deformity, and if a woman is normally skinny, it isn't healthy for her to try not to gain weight during pregnancy—you're supposed to gain at least 15 pounds even if you start out overweight, and if you're quite skinny up to 40 pounds.
Dan Stackhouse (NYC)
Dear moderator, please do see fit to post my anecdote about running into Ms. Schumer one day, years ago, and tragically missing the chance to offer her a beer or say, "pardon me, aren't you Chuck Schumer's second cousin?". I swear it's all true, and I just wanted to compliment her again here.
Heather (New York, NY)
Dave Chappelle is right Amy! There is a lot of love for you out here!
vincent7520 (France)
There is nothing less sexy than an anorexic / skinny / normal / athletic / chubby / fat (tick the appropriate) woman / man when he looks dull, depressed and as self-righteous as the next bigot always anxious about doing what must be done. Conversely there is nothing more sexy and nice too look at that an (etc… ) when (s)he is happy, lively, whimsical, is (him/her)self for whom "others" means sharing with them. Life could be so simple when one thinks of it.
Dixie (Deep South)
L’esprit français gotta love Vincent
Number23 (New York)
I don't get what people don't like about Amy Schumer, other than she makes comedic brilliance look easy. Jealousy? Lena Dunham should definitely get a clue from her. I scratched my head as she described how tragic it was to be attacked in social media every day. More than 40 million American's voted a racist, mendacious, buffoon into the White House. I couldn't think of anything easier than ignoring the rantings of self-loathing, conspiracy-gobbling trolls who spend their time barking at people they don't know on social media.
David (Boston)
I keep seeing her name pop up. Who is she?
Dan Stackhouse (NYC)
She's Senator Chuck Schumer's second cousin. Based on that and any other information in the article, you ought to be able to find out about her on the internet somewhere.
Birddog (Oregon)
My, my comics stealing jokes from other comics, who ever heard of such a thing: 'Guys walks into a bar, a Jew, a Christian, and a Hindu with a penguin tucked under his arm.."
Julie
Amy Schumer is my trucking hero.
John (Denver)
This is the type of profile and writing that so many writers try and fail to accomplish. Kudos and I really enjoyed the read. I don't personally find Amy Schumer's comedy funny (at all), but it isn't because I dislike her. I can appreciate her abilities and unique personality. More people should fight to be who they want to be in this life. If it doesn't hurt anyone, and it makes you happy, go for it!
AE (California)
That photo of a naked and running, heavily pregnant Amy Schumer made my day.
kat (new york)
she is silly. she is herself, very real and most importantly very funny!!
Jane Norton (Chilmark, MA)
I hope the newest member of the Fischer clan is born on the island!
Leon Lobos (Denver)
Real comedians don’t steal jokes
Dan Stackhouse (NYC)
Real wolves aren't named "Leon". Sorry, just kidding around, but if someone wrote that joke before I did, I had no idea. Seems also that there's no evidence she stole any jokes.
Steven (New York)
I love Amy Schumer. She’s an original. She gets on stage and doesn’t talk dirty to be funny. She talks dirty because that’s what she’s thinking about, as if it’s the most natural thing in the world to talk about the craziest sex fantasy she’s ever had. The result is hilarious. And there’s so much more to her movies. I loved “train wreck” and “I feel pretty.” They were funny, and often cringe inducing, but they were were also endearing love stories - and with satisfying endings. For all her crude cynicism, she is a romantic at heart. Stay real Amy. I can’t wait to see what you do next!
WPLMMT (New York City)
Lane Penn, Thank you for the lovely complement a few hours ago. How did you know so much about me?
JulieB (NYC)
Her autobiography, "Girl With The Lower Back Tattoo" is a great read. She tells about the hard work to get to where she is today. My middle-age self loves her, my 22-year old daughter loves her--we both find her. dare I say it, funny. I am really happy for her--she deserves to be happy.
Jane (Cambridge)
Great article. Strong woman. Beautiful photos of beautiful woman. Keep up the good work!!
chargony (NYC)
@Jane I absolutely love that picture of her running naked across a field--pregnant!
FromDublin (Dublin, Ireland)
Reading this was the first I’d heard about trolls targeting Amy Schumer. (Maybe it’s because I spend all my time hanging out in these comments?) I thought Trainwreck was one of the best things I’d ever seen when it came out. I can’t fathom why people would say anything negative about her, other than maybe being a bit miffed about a hard landing if she made you fall off your seat laughing. She’s brilliant.
JulieB (NYC)
@FromDublin, the trolls are relentless, and I don't understand it. They constantly rail on her for being unfunny and stealing jokes. I find her extremely funny and her material to be innovative.
Renee Richmond (new york city)
I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw Amy sitting in the front row of spectators on a Judge Judy episode. Very funny Amy.
DSM14 (Westfield NJ)
This love note from a critic to someone he covers raises questions of whether he can objectively review her work. For example, isn't taking a $1 million advance and then not delivering what she promised for years and then reneging once she decided she could earn more dishonest and greedy? If her appeal had dropped and $1 million was then too high, would she have returned part of it--no way. Another example of how the rich play by their own rules.
MaryTheresa (Way Uptown)
@DSM14 The quote reads, "She said she always knew she would be famous and once gave back a $1 million book advance because she believed in herself and figured she would get more money when she was more famous in a few years. She was right." She did not take the money,
DSM14 (Westfield NJ)
@MaryTheresa She took it, used it and then returned it when offered more, presumably without paying interest.
Gene (Nyc)
I dont get her humor , can barely smile leave alone laugh out loud. Some clean funny comedy that lifts the spirits, i think melissa mccarthy or lucy ball are more like the women I admire.
Jorge (USA)
Dear NYT: Amy Schumer is taking gross out humor to new levels. Lower and lower levels. Echoing Whitman's poetic outpouring, Schumer's "song of myself," she says she is “ecstatic and furious . . . and pleased and peaceful and manic and hopeless and so hopeful it’s crazy.” Too bad she is not very funny.
Nettie Glickman (Pittsburgh)
@Jorge i respect your opinion and raise you to tolerance. When men talk like her they are just being men.
Nettie Glickman (Pittsburgh)
Love you, Amy. Love you with moss on your breasts, love you naked in the park pregnant, love you in general and specific. Naked at any age with pride and no apologies is the best feminist movement ever. Nude on Amy.
Keren Warner (CT)
Isn’t it lucky that I don’t give a fig what Amy Schumer thinks. So I didn’t read anything beyond the headline.
Emily (Long Island)
@Keren Warner SO EDGY! Thanks for sharing your very valuable opinion! We are all in awe.
Suzanne (Rancho Bernardo, CA)
@ Karen Werner- but you felt compelled to comment, about nothing.
Dik Coates (Winnipeg, Canada)
@Keren Warner figs... any fig leaf photos? Just curious. Dik
Eric (Seattle)
Amy Schumer's most radical political work has been her honest portrayal of our desperate sexual and emotional need, and breaking though the shame we feel for it. The plastered woman in the back of the taxi offering to service the driver while she puts curly fries in her hair is a good person, so confused, in so much pain, but completely wholesome. Its a wonderful contribution. I celebrate her success along with that of Key and Peele. The three of them had incredibly funny shows, with material that explored the nether regions of our idiotic, bigoted, confused, and uncontrollable minds, in ways that are so honest, refreshing, generous, and entertaining, that their courage and the radical impact of their work was unacknowledged. They're all being rewarded. The searing vehemence with which people hate her is just astonishing. As for the plagiarism, a few weeks ago I was looking at a post someone had made, complaining about something they thought she'd stolen, which they incidentally followed with a short clip of their favorite new comic, who unbeknownst to them, was riffing on a tangent Amy Schumer originated five years earlier. Comedy is like that. People need to lighten up and learn to appreciate generosity and kindness when they see it. Amy Schumer is your friend.
SS (Brooklyn)
I love Amy and I love the photos of Amy by Heather Stem! Amazingly fun work!
Bridgman (Devon, Pa.)
I have close to zero in common with Amy Schumer yet she never fails to make me laugh. She can be funny even in still photographs. Car boots always go on the front passenger side tire not the back. Yes, she was being scammed.
WPLMMT (New York City)
I find Amy Schumer crass and vulgar. I guess there is a certain element who likes this sort of thing but not everybody. We have stooped to a really low level in our society when we start to accept this crudeness. Call me a prude but I wear it with honor.
ymac (charlotte)
I love Amy - love her freedom to be her and no apologies. At age 68 that is a rare and wonderful for a young woman - we need more of it.
SamwiseTheDrunk (Chicago Suburbs)
My wife had hyperemesis through all 3 pregnancies so far. It is brutal. I wish that on no one. It is also a reason I am staunchly pro-choice. How dare anyone think they could use their religion to justify forcing someone to potentially go through with that.
Robert Schmid (Marrakech)
Excellent, because I never think about her. Cannot name a thing she has been in.
Emily R (Boston)
@Robert Schmid Then why comment on the piece? There are lots of articles in the Times today where I wasn't familiar with the subject. Does that make them all less important?
GBR (New England)
I think this is how it's always been - and for literally everything: Each parent gives their child the best opportunities they can, to the best of their abilities at the time. Some - for a variety of complex reasons - are able to give better opportunities than others. It's no one's fault; everyone is trying their best. And let the chips fall where they may.
John (Tennessee)
Trolls are jerks. I personally just don't find her funny, but to denigrate her beyond that is childish.
Lillie (California)
@John Thanks, John. There are many “popular” comedians who are not interesting to me but I do not wish bad things upon them. The nastiness is worrisome (and probably also why Amy just does not care).
Joe (Nyc)
Ah, the predictable celebrity obsession continues, even in the Times. I have no particular opinion of Ms. Schumer either way. I've laughed at some of her jokes and others are meh. But I do object to celebrity worship and the constant fawning. Please, leave this to Page Six, where it's almost always more fun and interesting - and more honest. Why no mention that Schumer is related to the senator? It is relevant because it explains her privileged attitude. Her casual racism is brushed off - I suppose if one brings it up, you're just a hater. Here she is saying at once that she doesn't care what anyone thinks and then practically begging to know at the end. Now that's a good joke.
Counter Measures (Old Borough Park, NY)
@Joe One of the reasons, I think The New York Times does this, is to appeal to the under forty five demographic, which grew up immersed with Sesame Street, and an increasingly crude and vulgar culture! They need to attract a readership of those ages for fear of becoming irrelevant in the America of 2019!
North (Seattle)
@Counter Measures I'm well over 45 and I subscribe to the NYT. I find its reporting and feature articles relevant.
Puny Earthling (Iowa)
So what is the Charles Grassley joke? I have to know so I can heckle him next time he’s in town.
VS (Boise)
I get some of her jokes, and some I don’t. But one thing I can tell, this is one super smart person with devil-may-care attitude.
Footprint (Queens)
Whether Amy Schumer gives birth to a girl or a boy or a child in-between... that is one child with good karma!
Person (USA)
I love certain things about Amy, and I dislike certain things about Amy. Isn’t that how we feel about most people? Let her be, she’s human.
Eric (Saint Paul)
...Amy Schumer has made a bunch of racist jokes and I don't think I've forgiven her for them yet.
Lillie (California)
@Eric I struggle with that too. But she has also done a bunch of really funny jokes. If she asked me I would challenge her to go beyond racial stereotypes in her work. She is smart and funny enough to evolve in that way. If she cares enough...
Eric (Saint Paul)
@Lillie For sure, for sure; she's a talented comedian and has even apologized in 2015 for some of her racist jokes... ...but I thought that apology was kinda weak, and along the lines of "I didn't mean to hurt people, I'm sorry if I did," as if there were any question that her jokes about Mexican stereotypes were harmful. And, I believe she's made anti-Asian comments since... Anyway. Sorry about the rant. Thank you for listening & for your response! I think you're absolutely right. Do you follow Amy Schumer's comedy? What do you like about it?
Esther (Hamlton Bays)
Jaye P Morgan. Remember her? Of course not. She was famous for being famous for a time. A few guest appearances, minor TV paydays, highway crooner bars. A nobody, long forgotten. Utterly disposible. A case perfectly in point.
urmyonlyhopeobi1 (miami, fl)
I visited this article just long enough to state my two cents'worth about Amy Schumer. Her comedic time has come and gone, her jokes were never really funny, and I find her to be like tamarind - an acquired taste.
Mal T (KS)
Why would anyone ever want to know how many times Amy Schumer has vomited? I stopped reading at that point because I was afraid the writer was going to tally her other bodily functions. If that is Ms. Schumer's claim to fame, and/or the writer's/editor's idea of a compelling or appealing lead-in to the story, I think comedic and journalist standards have reached the bottom of the barrel.
Passion for Peaches (Left Coast)
@Mal T, I agree. I submitted a similar observation about the writer’s choice of details, and it did not post. I assumd that I had been too critical of the reporter, which is not allowed here. Crude is Schumer’s stock in trade. I don’t like it, but many do.
Jones (Florida)
I sympathize with Ms. Schumer and her difficult pregnancy and find her quite funny, at times. What I find entirely inappropriate for this article is the details of her vomiting and did not think they were necessary to convey the author's opinions on his topic.
Hope (Pennsylvania)
As a woman close to Amy's age, who also just went through my first pregnancy and am now a new mom, I find this piece very valuable. The true perspective of a woman's experience that's not photo-shopped, filtered or airbrushed. Real women want to hear the stories of other real women. As for the controversies that plague her, the criticism feels forced in a culture that has been trained to pounce on perceived faults, but she seems to have a genuinely kind energy that tells me she's not what online critics try to say she is. I look forward to her Netflix special, particularly for the pregnancy humor. We all need people we can laugh with and empathize with.
Ant (Weitweg)
I’m so pleased that an Amy Schumer can succeed and prosper. When I was her age, I was often considered outside social norms for my ribald humor and what was then described as “potty mouth.” Now, at 75, young women tell me I’m their idol, albeit not a famous one.
John (Denver)
@Ant Honest and uncensored humor (that isn't malicious) in daily life is rarely welcomed by insecure people, but admired by nearly everyone.
John Woods (Madison, WI)
After reading this article my reaction is that Amy Schumer is excessively human and she mines this for every bit of absurdity she can. Since the absurd pops up in nearly every situation we find ourselves in, she will never run out of material. In the meantime, she is not taken with herself. She's just a cool person with a gift for seeing the silliness of everyday life that she shares with us. Such people are few and far between, and that's why we love her. Perhaps no melancholy then no awareness of the absurd. Thanks Amy.
MM Friese (Los Angeles)
Good for you, Amy. Don't ever back down. I admire your courage and integrity.
WorldWideWeb (New Baltimore NY)
I find her very funny and applaud her evolution and wish her good health and a blessed motherhood. Let us not forget, however, her vitally important cousin, Chuck Schumer (D. NY) who is on the absolute front lines of defending the democracy from the orange monster. Amy helps there too and I also applaud her for that.
MD (Cromwell, CT)
The best story I've heard is that she was hired by a German SW company to entertain a room of C-level execs from their top customers. A room full of wealthy men. She took them apart. She said the person who booked her obviously did not know her humor. She joked that she was getting paid $400k to mock them. I don't care for half her material but this was priceless. Wish I could have seen their faces.
Megan (USA)
@MD and why is it priceless to mock a room full of rich people? What have they done to her? Other than pay her an insane amount of money being rich herself.
Lynn in DC (um, DC)
@MD People don't object to being mocked, that is why "roasts" and shock jocks are so popular. If Amy wanted to make a point, she would have rejected the money. Accepting money for the self-satisfaction of shocking an audience is par for the course these days.
mbl14 (NJ)
@MD Quite ironic considering how rich she now is.
njglea (Seattle)
Compare Ms. Schumer with Ellen. I will not watch Ms. Schumer or anyone who acts and/or talks like her. It's not funny or acceptable to me and I'm far from an uptight person.
MaryTheresa (Way Uptown)
@njglea Nah.
Robert Triptow (Pahoa, Hawaii)
Amy Schumer doesn't care what I think, but that goes both ways.
tony (san francisco)
Nice article Jason. Hope you're well....Tony O
Henry VIII (Montclair)
The world is a better, happier, funnier, more delightful place simply because Amy Schumer is in it and doing what only she can do.
pollyb1 (san francisco)
I didn't like Amy Schumer but, after reading this, I kinda do.
Scott B (Newton MA)
She did a Budweiser commercial. To paraphrase Bill Hicks, she is off the artistic roll call. With virtually every artist accessible online from most of history; you might as well avoid the corporate shills.
Iz
Schumer is successful, in control of her life, and worked hard to get to where she is. But she is not funny--anymore.
Jen (BC, Canada)
Just piling on the love for this woman from Canada. I have always loved you Amy, I hope you're reading this.
ElizabethAtl (Atlanta)
My favorite comedian...thanks for keeping it realz.
Sue (London)
She seems like a lovely woman and I have never seen such a joyful nudie running around a park. Best wishes for the upcoming birth, Amy.
Hugh MacDonald (Los Angeles)
"Since the comedian Amy Schumer became pregnant, she had vomited, in her conservative estimate, 980 times." Which demonstrates the depth of her sense of humor. Thanks for the warning.
Paris (France)
Am I the only one who think Schumer is crass and gross? It's a shameful message to all young women that the best way to get attention is to debase yourself.
fast/furious (Washington, DC)
I love you Amy Schumer. I laugh just thinking about your work - like "12 Angry Men." My mother, who's 90, had hyperemesis during two pregnancies. She was 10 lbs under her normal weight when I was born. I can't wait to tell her about your comment that nobody knows anything about this disease because men don't get it. Stay strong. Best wishes for your pregnancy. Dave Chapelle is right. There's a lot of love for you out here.
Lynn in DC (um, DC)
@fast/furious Actually hyperemesis became news when Kate Middleton suffered from it and had to be hospitalized back in 2012.
SGK (Austin Area)
I've listened to/watched Amy Schumer for some time. Her timing and her iconoclastic approach to humor seem more than fit for our period of history, even when she might cross a line (who minds crossing lines!?). With a Trump in office, we need a Schumer on stage. For those who find her offensive or too much -- there are male comics who would make her seem tame by comparison: Andrew Dice Clay, Sam Kinison, and a host of others. Her gender makes her an easy target. I've always sensed an inner vulnerability, which most comics seem to possess. This is a great piece on a unique individual. I love Amy Schumer and what she does, who she is, how she lives, what she jokes about, and even when I wince over some of her material, I know I'm listening to somebody out to smother the terrible with the hilarious -- thank goodness.
Patrick Sewall (Chicago)
My wife had hyperemesis so bad with our last daughter that it sent her to the hospital four separate times, each time being completely dehydrated to the point where she had to be put on IV drips. Everyone thought she was crazy back then. We both have never forgotten the experience. This condition didn’t just appear overnight. As glad as I am that Amy is bringing this to light, it really didn’t need a celebrity to give this condition legitimacy. It just needed understanding medical professionals and people in our lives that believed my wife when she said she felt like she was going to throw up every minute of every day for months.
mibd (Atlanta)
@Patrick Sewall the current thinking is that Charlotte Bronte likely died of hyperemesis.
Stephen (Florida)
@Patrick Sewall My sister had this. During all three pregnancies, she vomited so often that she was hospitalized several times. During her third pregnancy, she discovered she could tolerate Taco Bell bean burritos, which she ate so often she can’t even look at them now. However, all three pregnancies resulted in three wonderful sons, so there’s that. Good luck to Amy.
karendavidson61 (Arcata, CA)
@Patrick Sewall 48 years ago I vomited hourly for months and then had toxemia ( pre-eclampsia). Since toxemia is associated with younger undernourished moms I blamed the vomiting. That son is wonderful but the "natural" delivery was awful because of blood pressure shots. The attempts to stop the vomiting were with drugs never suggested now. For the next two pregnancies I used small amounts of weed to allow me to eat between vomiting. My lovely female doctor in Wisconsin agreed with my pot use!!!! Since they were born more than 40 years ago I feel safe mentioning it. All three kids are brilliant and successful and creative. Just sayin......
JPZiller (Terminus)
I've had it in for Amy Schumer since the first days of "Last Comic Standing". She's very funny, self-aware, self-confident and I couldn't be happier for her.
rlk (New York)
There is nothing in this world so beautiful as a pregnant, loving mom-to-be.
RonCA (California)
The writer overstates Schumer's legacy and downplays her decline. Schumer is portrayed as some groundbreaking comedian, but she's not at all that unique. There are plenty of female comedians that, "don't care what we think," and are much funnier than Schumer. Sarah Silverman, Lisa Lamponelli, and Whitney Cummings are a few that come to mind. Furthermore, I'm not sure I'd characterize her as a feminist. Schumer and Lena Dunham are, "white feminist," that joke about rape and discredit a sexual assault victims while defending the perpetrator. Schumer is a has been that has been steadily in decline. Her last Netflix special was the nail in her coffin.
Dr Chris E (Greater Portland, ME)
@RonCA...I hit the RECOMMENDED button by accident. Please note I do not agree with any part of the comment above. Amy is by no means a has-been.
Lynne (Seattle)
This was beautifully written, and the end made me tear up. So many gifted people are haunted like she is, and you captured it so beautifully.
ABG (Boston)
I recently saw Amy in Medford, MA and she was sharp, funny, silly, and irreverent. Loved the show and love her.
Nathan (chicago)
I'm responding to the part of the article that mentions Ms. Schumer asks for clips of her audience so she knows they are enjoying themselves. I live in Chicago and attended the show that was filmed for the upcoming Netflix special. I go to a lot of comedy shows here and hers was unique. First, the crowd was probably 3/4 women- I've never seen that. Second, there was an energy and enthusiasm in the audience that was palpable. Third, even with our high expectations, the show delivered. It was an ideal blend of humor and social commentary. I spent the next week watching old clips from her show and remembering that she created, as the author asserts, "the funniest feminist humor in the history of sketch comedy". Bottom line- I hope Ms. Schumer keeps doing what she's doing (and comes back to Chicago).
Lillie (California)
@Nathan Thank you for sharing the in person experience.
Joanna Cotler (NYC)
I love you, Amy Schumer. Thank you for being so honest and for making me laugh so hard. You are a goddess in my book.
Byron (Seattle, WA)
Amy is so unabashedly Human. The b&w photo of her that looks like she chasing the ducks is wonderful. The smile … she looks like a little 3 yr old girl running naked at the beach with not a care in the world … pure delight.
Bruce Savin (Montecito)
Amy, pregnant and eating shrimp? I'll stop right there.
CT Mom (Connecticut)
I’m confused. In what way is a pregnant woman eating shrimp an offense??
Greenfordanger (Yukon)
@Bruce Savin Good that you stopped right there. She gets to decide what kind of food is safe for her to eat while pregnant.
Bruce Savin (Montecito)
@CT Mom Shrimp, shellfish in particular have high levels of toxicity. In fact only deep sea northern hemisphere fish are considered safe to eat.
Free to be Me (U.S.A.)
I had never paid much attention to Amy Schumer until I watched one of her specials with a group of my old high school friends (we are in our late 50s). I never laughed so hard. Many of us peed. Amy Schumer is my hero! Not just as a comic, but, as a woman. She will go down in history as moving the needle forward for women's rights. Dear Amy, congratulations on your new baby! You are entering into another wonderful new world. You thought the last world was funny......this is where it all opens up! Take good care, A Fan
Salix (Sunset Park, Brooklyn)
Lovely interview with a very interesting person. Thanks NYT!
Steve (Raleigh, NC)
Comedy is best when it rides the razor's edge. This is what Amy does best and why I love her. I'm 63 and when my dad took me to see Cheech and Chong live for my 17th birthday and I saw him laughing so hard with me when they were sniffing each others butts. I was floored. They did their Dave jokes and drug references. I thought, this is way too cool for my dad. I asked him later why he wanted to come too and he said "These guys are popular and on the cutting edge. Always look for comedians on the cutting edge". He also took me to see George Carlin live when he was in his prime in the 70's. Keep it up Amy. I hope to take my granddaughter to see you one day.
Rod (TX)
Not caring what people think and not caring whether people like you are different things. I think Amy cares what people think, she is after all trying to get people to laugh, but doesn't care whether they like her.
biff murphy (pembroke ma.)
“I hope it’s a girl,” she said, a sarcastic hint in her voice, “because it’s such a scary time for men.” ... Love Amy. Miss her on my teevee
Michael (Los Angeles)
I like Amy but feel the elephant in the room not discussed here is Amy’s big support for the extremely uncool Hillary Clinton. The Broad City girls, Lena Dunham and everyone comic with the same politics is suffering from the backlash of young people against the passing era of corporate neoliberalism.
Larry G (NYC)
@Michael Despite being called a "Neoliberal" by a Bernie Sanders guy for the past year or so, I must admit I still have no idea what it means. In it's simplest terms, if it means that myself and the women mentioned above, knew that sitting home or voting 3rd party in 2016 was insane, then call me "neoliberal" all of the time. If it means we knew that calling trump & Hillary Clinton, the same in 2016 was insane, then call me "neoliberal". If after two years of trump, you still think that there was no difference between trump & Hillary Clinton, and you are thinking about staying home or voting 3rd party again, if your first and only choice is not the Dem nominee, then you are beyond insane, you are a huge part of the problem.
Michael (Los Angeles)
Trump’s election paved the way for Bernie. It was very good, compared to letting the Reagan/Clinton era drag on.
stephen rhymer (Edmond, OK)
Schumer may be a fine person and hopefully will get through her pregnancy and raising her child. i really don't care about seeing her every move plastered about the media. to me she's like Kathy Griffith, the Baldwin brothers and the Kardashians.... boring and rarely relevant.
tg (Seattle)
@stephen rhymer just curious, who do you find exciting and relevant ?
Thuban77 (Florida)
@stephen rhymer Well, not relevant to you.
Joe (California)
I've tried to like her but she just isn't funny at all to me.
Chuck (Atlanta)
@Joe I enjoyed your essay. While I don't agree with your thesis, I do think you made some valid points regarding personal preferences and individual tastes. Nothing that can be described as having a style will universally appeal to everyone. It would be a boring world otherwise, right? I didn't see where you listed examples of comedians that you find to be funny, but I sure hope that you've found some.
Susan Hill (North Of Seattle)
Hyperemesis grav. Is real! Autocorrect never heard of it though, naturally. I had it so bad I couldn’t drive the one mile to work without puking in the car litter bucket. I’d puke between each patient I saw in clinic ( I’m a nurse practitioner). I couldn’t let food touch my lips when I ate because it would trigger vomiting. I couldn’t watch TV because the food ads are constant, and they would provoke puking. I gained a whole new insight into anorexics. And I love food and love cooking! I didn’t think it could get worse, but I learned differently on my second pregnancy 4 years later—ended up in hospital on IVs for a week. To this day (30 years later) there are certain foods I can’t even contemplate, due to associating with my hyperemesis. It was brutal, and depressing, but god did I get two brilliant kids out of the deal! Hang in there darlin’!!
MRDT (NYC)
I love you, Amy! Don't ever change!
Kathryn W (Savannah)
I love how people are suggesting ginger and wrist bands and avoiding seafood. Like she and her doctors weren't already on the case, trying everything they could to help her not vomit 900+ times. One of the hard parts of being pregnant is everyone feeling they are entitled to discuss your body and health.
Bev A. (New York)
@Kathryn W it's not just when pregnant -- this happens to all women throughout our entire lives. Even doctors don't think our symptoms are real.
Maggie (Maine)
@Kathryn W. Or, people are being kind and passing on advice they feel will be helpful. Take what you can use and ignore the rest, nodding politely. If you discuss your health, you really can’t take umbrage when people comment on it.
Hope (Cleveland)
@Kathryn W You are so right. And then the guy yelling at me on the plane because my infant was screaming--"It's the ears!" Thanks, Joe.
judyweller (Cumberland, MD)
I never heard of Amy Schumer and I could care less about her. I fail to understand why this article is given space in the NYT when there are so many more important things to put in print. It is articles like this that makes you understand how far the NYT and other prominent publication have sunk in an effort to capture readers.
Emily R (Boston)
@judyweller But you read it? Do you ignore all of the food and style sections, or just pick and choose? It can’t all be doom and gloom. Some fun in life and the NYTimes is warranted PS, it’s I couldn’t care less. Otherwise you actually could care less.
Maggie (Maine)
@judyweller. I feel the same about Tom Brady in The Boston Globe. Therefore, when I see an article on him, I go by. Try it!
Laurie (Maryland)
@judyweller I think you mean "couldn't care less." And this is the Television section of the NYT where they feature content about tv shows and entertainment. Seems like a perfect place for such an article.
Alexandra (Hawaii)
I love Amy Schumer as a person and mostly can't stand her work, although I watch all of it, because I'm rooting for her so hard. Kind of the opposite of how I feel about most male comics.
Passion for Peaches (Left Coast)
@Alexandra, that is an interesting take on Schumer. A quick scan of the comments reveals that most of the negatives are posted under male names. I think she scares men a little bit. But I’m in the same boat with you, which is to say that I want to like her and laugh at her jokes, but most of the time I don’t think she’s funny. Sometimes she is downright gross, just because she can be. She tries to hard to shock, in my opinion. She’s like a female Louis C.K., in some respects (minus the predilection for sexual harassment, presumably). You know the way he constantly rattles on about self stimulation? There are many similarities in their comedy routines.
JGar (Connecticut)
Try "Traveller's Wristbands," (many different brands available.) My wife is a physician. Not only do they help my wife during routine air and car travel, but helped amazingly well for both of her pregnancies. Easily available, easy to buy, no drugs involved or special foods you might not like, and not expensive. At the very least worth trying!
Kim (Princeton NJ)
I'm not the Container Store shopping perfect woman with the "can I see a manager" haircut and you always make me feel empowered for being different. Thank you for that. Oh, and you are hilarious! Much Love.
jan (left coast)
When you are pregnant, you avoid foods like shrimp, sushi, etc. because your body will reject the bacteria in the food because it might be harmful to the pregnancy. The high level of hormones, and foods/drinks/drugs that might cause harm to the pregnancy are the two most common triggers for the vomit reflex during pregnancy.
MT (Ohio)
@jan She has hyperemesis gravidum. It has nothing to do with what food you eat or if you are sitting or standing.
Jay (LA)
@jan Don't pregsplain
tg (Seattle)
@Jay i am borrowing that permanently, thank you.
Dina Raymond (Massachusetts)
You rock Amy!! Me and my girl love you!
Shef (Hull MA)
I like that Amy Schumer is bothering to go out in the world and lead by example. Some of us just walk around thinking things that Schumer and Gervais are brave enough to say out loud. All cruelty and hypocrisy and greed and ignorance should be exposed - when its done for a laugh, even better. She's a delight.
Ed (America)
"there’s nothing more powerful than not giving a [truck]" That's a profound philosophical achievement. In fact, it's the perfect defense against today's Twitter trolls and outrage mobs. Nothing disarms the mobs like the simple, "I don't care." Too many people instantly, reflexively apologize when confronted by bullies, thereby sanctioning their behavior and confessing to imaginary crimes. It takes courage and integrity today, especially among the famous and successful, to simply reply: "Nope."
Jason Galbraith (Little Elm, Texas)
I will always be a big Amy Schumer fan. What has comedy come to when you can't make fun of something as popular as "Lemonade?"
mini you (nyc)
@Jason Galbraith As popular and pretentious as Lemonade. I like Beyonce as much as the next girl, but sometime in the last decade she and her husband have both entered a zone so removed from us mere mortals that their artistic output is almost too easy to parody.
Katie R (Amsterdam, NL)
I loved Inside Amy Schumer and Trainwreck because they both pushed boundaries about how women are expected to behave and look. And I now love her for forgoing the traditional, heavily Valencia-filtered celebrity portrait of what being pregnant looks like and actually chronicling the incredibly intense experience that’s involved with growing a little human inside of your body. It can be quite a tough journey and I think she’s managed to inspire a ton of women like me whose pregnancies never made them feel like Beyoncé sitting in a waterfall of flowers. Thanks for keeping it real, Amy.
Frank (Raleigh, NC)
I love to hear her joke about Chuck Grassley. He is a primitive person and needs all the jokes we can speak about him.
atb (Chicago)
I don't understand why anyone wants to be pregnant. Sounds like a nightmare. Also, I think Schumer is an interesting person but her crassness is off-putting.
Marybeth (PA)
Every pregnancy is different, and the final reward is another member of your family!
themoi (KS)
@Marybeth As the reader above put it "I don't understand why anyone wants to be pregnant". They prefer to be childfree. Your comments will not change their mind or their opinion.
Alice (Maine)
Cheers to you Amy!!! Love, Love the photo of you running naked! Your joy, creativity and courage inspire & lift all women up a little higher.... Rock-On-Little Mama
Milton Lewis (Hamilton Ontario)
Schumer has starred in some very entertaining light comedies. Her stand-up act is entirely different. The vulgarity and crude body references are cringeworthy. I am confident that she can get laughs without relying upon full frontal vulgarity.
Rosie (NYC)
Motherhood will make her grow up beyond her "teenage boy" humor.
MaryTheresa (Way Uptown)
@Rosie Hope her teenage girl humor survives the birth!
Noah (new mexico)
Amy Schumer Rocks! Keep doing what you're doing, being your beautiful, brilliant self!
Gene S (Hollis NH)
Just a nice piece of journalism. It made me feel very comfortable with her.
dawn (Stockton, NJ)
Loved Amy Schumer since she competed on “Last Comic Standing” (she was robbed of the title). From that moment, I knew she had a long, strong career ahead because she was wholly herself, acerbic, honest and funny. As the story points out, she can make us cringe, as the best comics do. But the cringe is (almost) always accompanied by a laugh, an ah-ha moment or both. Full steam ahead, Amy. The best is yet to come.
Kate McLeod (NYC)
Not caring what other people think of you is profound. And you can get there with brave comedy like Schumer's. Thanks Amy.
jdmcox (Palo Alto, CA)
I like her and admire her. She makes me think in ways I hadn't thought of thinking.
WPLMMT (New York City)
Lane Penn, Look at the photo attached. Is that funny to you? I am Irish and we are known for having a sense of humor. Just ask my family and friends and they will agree. You may like her humor but I think it is warped. Then to each his own as they say.
Phil (Seattle WA)
@WPLMMT Sorry, was there an Irish slur in this story. WShat does your photo depict?
Mark H (NYC)
This 60 yr old guy loves you Amy!
Kristin (Portland, OR)
I don't really follow comedians in general, but I did see "I Feel Pretty" which turned out to be remarkably enjoyable and funny in all the right ways. She also gets big props from me for her tendency to irritate the PC police, and I urge her to not allow the oppressive, censorship-happy tyrants of the Twitter generation to cause her to tone down any joke she might otherwise be tempted to make. I strongly suspect that somewhere inside her, Schumer understands that the folks who claim they are "woke" are in actuality not just deeply asleep, but on a mission to drag us all into their Orwellian-themed nightmare.
NG (Arizona)
It's interesting to watch her specials where she's uncensored and then to watch her on a talk show (i.e. "Ellen) where she is. It is on the talk shows that I think her real comic ability shines. She's someone I'd love to have a beer with!
Off Girl (NY)
Looking forward to her directorial debut!
themoi (KS)
Real comedians like George Carlin are no doubt turning in their graves at what passes for "comedy" these days. Mr. Carlin had an acerbic wit that was right on the mark to point out the social foibles of the time. The person in this article appeals to the lowest common denominator with banal gutter humor that is supposed to be funny. No wonder we as a society are heading south in the handbasket at an accelerating rate.
Eric (N/a)
@themoi So your critique is "She's not George Carlin?" George Carlin isn't all that funny. He came from an older school of comedy where they would tell longer jokes and stories. Maybe you like that. Schumer is pointing out the social foibles of *this* time. I don't think she's hilarious, but she's funny and she's relevant. (And George Carlin dealt his share of banal gutter humor, too.)
atb (Chicago)
@Eric I get your point but Carlin was nothing if not extremely intelligent. That intelligence is I think what is now missing on comedy. There is a big focus on bodily functions and fluids that I personally find adolescent and gross.
eheck (Ohio)
@themoi " The person in this article appeals to the lowest common denominator with banal gutter humor that is supposed to be funny." So did George Carlin - I remember it well.
Em (Helsinki)
Lot of love for you Amy, you've made me laugh at myself and feel better about my faults.
Michael c (Brooklyn)
I love her. I love the way she looks. I love her humor and intelligence. I love her sarcasm. I’m jealous of those people in New Orleans who got to see her live. Amy Schumer is the litmus test: if you don’t LOVE her, you can’t be my friend.
Jc (Fayetteville, NC)
Dave Chappell is right. There’s a lot of love out here for her. Keep going! She’s one of the funniest true comedians I’ve ever seen, and I respect and admire her.
B (Austin, TX)
I adore her and am excited that she’s still trying new things. And to Jason Zinoman: This is an excellent profile. You notice the small things, and share them with us.
MS (NY)
I absolutely love Amy Schumer and that is never going to change. Those boy trolls on the Internet cant stand to see a woman in control of her life and reshaping comedy and beauty standards on a woman's terms. In my view she has changed the world.
DSM14 (Westfield NJ)
@MS I take it you don't know that Phyliss Diller and Joan rivers "changed the world" in those same ways decades ago?
Chuck (France)
@MS @NY I don't think she said that ... she simply acknowledged what Schumer has done ... but there was no denying others came before ... and those you mention are true giants :)
DSM14 (Westfield NJ)
@Chuck How can you have "changed the world" if others had done the exact same thing long before--and I could have added Elayne Boosler, Roseanne Barr and others to the list. Can I claim to have changed the world by coming up with an electric light bulb now? I suspect MS is a typical young person with no sense of the history about which she writes.
Jay David (NM)
Most comedians are posers selling their corny jokes. Real comedians are always pushing to and teetering on the edge. Some, like Louis C.K., go over the edge. There is always that risk.
Cynthia Lamb (NM)
I'm okay with Amy Schumer not caring what I think, I don't care much for her either. I find her humor crude and sometimes offensive. I prefer intelligent wit to her brand of humor.
DickeyFuller (DC)
@Cynthia Lamb I feel very sorry for her family, especially Senator Schumer. He doesn't really look that amused or proud when he's around her.
Byron (Seattle, WA)
@DickeyFuller Huh?
Salix (Sunset Park, Brooklyn)
@DickeyFuller Are you sure this is the best way to elevate discourse? Like Amy said, there's a lot of hate out there.
Heather (Providence, Rhode Island)
I want to print out this article and read it daily for inspiration. Mr. Zinoman, your pathos in portraying Schumer's authentic blend of vulnerability and confidence is so on point here that I thought you were a woman. Looking forward to reading more of your work!
beth (amsterdam)
@Heather, Yes, it was so well written that I neglected to notice those details consciously. Thanks for pointing that out :-)
Small Town Liberal (Midwest)
I am a huge fan of Amy Schumer. She is truly fierce and funny. Her show "Inside Amy Schumer" was brilliant and hilarious. She also cares and is a kind and giving person. I wish her and her family all the best!
JD (Minneapolis)
I loved Amy in Meteor Shower and am glad she spent some time on Broadway. I am grateful for her unique and brilliant perspective on being a Woman In America, and have shared the chapter in her memoir about introversion at work with my colleagues because I found it so helpful. Thank you for this profile!
Kathy (Minneapolis)
Amy Schumer has made the world a better place. She is the opposite of those parents embroiled in the college admission scandal because she's never needed some phony credentials to leave her mark. Sincerity, vulnerability and hard work have gotten her to where she is, as well as acknowledgment when she has made mistakes or unintentionally hurt people. While she will continue to make mistakes, as all of us parents do, she will give her son or daughter an important gift....a sense of how to live in this world with honesty and integrity. Thank you Amy, you rock!
rivka (Texas)
Amy is funny, strong, flawed and simply herself. If more people were as fearless, the world would be a lot more...(rhymes with truck)...interesting.
profwilliams (Montclair)
Never been a fan. But that's okay, if folks like her, what do I care? But then the issue of her "cultural appropriation," which for her, included straight up racist jokes, and using "brown face" to parody a Beyonce. So while I'm left wondering why is she's given a pass, the answer is obvious" Ms. Schumer is a clear example of White female privilege: She does bad. Says sorry. Is forgiven. Gets a nice write up in the NYTimes.
Lissa (Virginia)
@profwilliams: Or...as a woman of any color in this country going back 250 years, she has not been the consistent receiver of privilege of land ownership; voting rights; positions of power in business, education and government all while systematically keeping all others from attaining the same. Additionally, but no less important to your comment, she didn't get a 'pass', she was pilloried in the press and by the people. So true, it is such a scary time for men in this country right now!
JM (NJ)
@profwilliams -- Yeah, that explains why Jeanine Pirro has been rebuked by Fox while Tucker Carlson's behavior is allowed to continue with no apparent response by his management. I'm not saying that either of them is right, but if "white female privilege" were really a thing, she wouldn't be the only one who got a public scolding.
Lynn in DC (um, DC)
@profwilliams Amy just can't help being offensive. Bless her heart.
Shannon Bell (Arlington, Virginia)
Love me some Amy Schumer. I saw her live in DC just a few months ago and my boyfriend thought I was going to choke to death from laughing so hard. Shine on, girl! You make the world a better place for all of us.
Ann O. Dyne (Unglaciated Indiana)
I love her being, and don't care about those who want to hate her.
malfeasance (New York)
Narcissism isn't humor.
BP (NYC)
@malfeasance All comics are narcissists--frankly, it's integral to their art form.
tg (Seattle)
@malfeasance I respectfully disagree. I laugh at Donald Trump every day.
someone (somewhere in the Midwest)
Very much looking forward to her special. There's nothing like pregnancy and birth to reinvigorate your humor! The lack of sleep makes you wacky, too. Nothing better than a comic who *gets it*
AusTex (Austin, Texas)
Unfortunately the internet and social media enable those who can't to criticize those who do. Writing comedy must be, is, very tough. Presenting, delivering that creativity in a dark room where feedback is immediate and unrestrained is pressure most of us don't have the courage to do. Like many, some of her material I find brilliant and innovative some not so much but her voice, her point of view is worthy of respect and consideration. Keep going Amy and congratulations on your marriage and family.
Deborah (Pawleys Island)
The last quote, “And pleased and peaceful and manic and hopeless and so hopeful it’s crazy.” is so spot on for these times. Made me smile and tear up at the same time.
Tuxedo Cat (New York)
I am all for hustling for a laugh, most of us do that at times in our day-to-day lives. However, I do not find Ms. Schumer's humor funny. Crude jokes and the need to be provocative for shock value's sake, has never appealed to me, from Ms. Schumer or anyone else.
Alexandra
@Tuxedo Cat womp womp.
Eric (NYC)
I'm not sure that I like all her jokes, but it is clear to me that Amy Schumer is fundamentally a good person and her work matters immensely. She may be made out of titanium, but she does not deserve all the hatred that she gets, and neither do her female comedian colleagues. I hope that she does truly not care as she says. I may be completely deluded but I somehow think that the internet will grow up and that gratuitous hatred will some time soon-ish grow out of fashion. In the meantime, we all need to stand in solidarity.
L (NYC)
@Eric: About your hope that "the internet will grow up," I do think you are deluded. The ability to stay anonymous while saying viciously horrendous things gives every cowardly keyboard-jockey in the world more power than they should have. It tilts the playing field in favor of the mean, the crass, the vulgar, the careless, the evil - basically, the least-common-denominator behaviors among humanity. And there is a lot of hate, a lot of ignorance, and ton of other non-desirable character traits out there, traits that people seem to cultivate as if being hateful, ignorant, etc. were some kind of badge of honor. I think the essence of having a "good character" (as we used to call it) has been so devalued, especially in the current political climate, that people who have a good moral compass, who have a "good character," are seen as foolish dupes these days. And, sadly, I don't see that changing any time soon.
Laura (Southern US)
Seeing her name attached to something is enough to make me watch it. Love her!
sjs (Bridgeport, CT)
She's funny. I like her. I admire her.
WPLMMT (New York City)
I have never found Amy Schumer to be funny but then I do not care for New York humor. It maybe because I am from Boston and our humor is in better taste and more sophisticated. At least that has been my personal experience.
JS27 (New York)
@WPLMMT Wait, is this a joke? I didn't think Bostonians were known for deadpan, ironic humor.
Lane (Penn)
You sound like a really fun and happy person with lots of friends!
Posey's Future (San Francisco, CA)
@WPLMMT Boston laughs are smarter than New York laughs? Louis CK despite his crimes and insensitivity is often funny but, is he funnier than Jerry Seinfeld? Nah.
Lynn (Stonington, CT)
Fearless, for sure. Good on her!
MIMA (heartsny)
I get the feeling she knows just a little bit more than we think she knows. Maybe a lot more.
Mike B (Ridgewood, NJ)
Look into ginger to quell nausea. Been getting car sick since I was a kid and it works for me.
NS (Canada)
Hyperemesis is a real and very serious disease: I was hospitalized several times from it. Ginger will not help.
Mike B (Ridgewood, NJ)
@NS Which is why I said "Look into..." (which presumes MD advice) and not "take ginger". Circumstances differ.
Frank Travaline (South Jersey)
Very funny lady. All the best with the baby.
Me (U.S.)
Nicely written, Mr. Zinoman. I especially liked the ending...aren't we all a bit melancholy?
John (Denver)
@Me Exactly what I thought. "Melancholy" in many cases doesn't have to mean sadness either. Just a worldly-wise person that has dealt with much adversity, and continues to find ways to overcome and find their own version of contentment/happiness.
