Most countries would be bending over backwards to give Cheserek citizenship or at least a path to it. He deserves better than the USA.

Maybe if he told Trump that he has proof Obama was born in Kenya, they would let him in.

Cheserek is a real talent that the US should be bending over backward to at least approve an extended green card. I doubt any runner will ever again win so many NCAA Div 1 championships. He would be a fine citizen. I wish him success.

If he was driving NASCAR, he'd be granted citizenship ASAP...

Boy shaking hands with Cheserek - what a beautiful picture!

@berts My thoughts exactly! You beat me to the punch with your comment.

Interesting article, however quoting Farah's mile PR as 3:56 and implying Ches is faster over that distance is highly misleading. Farah has run 3:28.81 for 1500m, good for about a 3:45 mile and well clear of anything Ches has done over that distance.

@Dan You are right on the mark, Dan. Farah's time in the 1500 (Metric Mile) is the British record, meaning faster than Coe, Ovett, and Cram's times, all former world record holders in the mile. As Dan notes, Cheserek has a long way to go to match Farah's speed over "shorter" distances.

@Dan Thank you. I was about to post the same thing. Amazing ignorance on the part of the Times' writers and editors. (Though it's a lot more like 3:46 than 3:45, but that's a quibble.) There's a lot of other dumb stuff in the article, too. Like demeaning Ed's 5000/10,000 PRs, which are from tactical college races years ago, and aren't anywhere *close* to representing his ability. The *stupidity* of the immigration/visa/citizenship process is freaking *stunning.* Is there *anything* in America anymore that isn't run like a medieval idiocracy? Incredible. When Ed runs 12:45 and 26:30 in a couple of years, and wins a couple of Olympic Golds, we'll really wish he was a US citizen.

"but was told he had not proved himself against pro runners." What? He has spent a career besting pro runners - on the field and in the record books. Ridiculous. He seems like an elegant guy and we'd be lucky to have him as a citizen.
