Dr. Wethers was my pediatrician. As a kid I had no idea how accomplished she was! I just knew she was a good doctor. I am proud to have been her patient for many years.

Dr. Wethers was my children's pediatrician at the Washington Heights HIP Center in the early 70s. She was an intelligent, amazing, warm person as well as a compassionate and thorough practitioner who always took time to explain everything. I trusted her and her wonderful diagnostic skills completely, she was always right and knew best what to do. She respected her patients and we returned that respect to her. She was very special.

We were fortunate to have Dr Wethers as our pediatrician for the years we lived in Washington Heights in the early 1960s. Her conservative treatment saved one of my children from a surgery that is no longer performed because of its generally poor outcome. White male specialists tried to intimidate her but she did not budge. I loved this lady!

@BeauregardsallyG Now that is a wonderful testimonial to her power!

What is omitted here is what a compassionate practitioner she was of general pediatrics. I worked with Doris for many years at the Washington Heights office of what was then HIP. She was a mentor who was always positive and constructive and both kind and respectful to all her patients. a lovely lady and a wise pediatrician.

I'm 52 years old and had no knowledge of this woman Kids NEED TO KNOW that there have been black women achieving greatness through academic pursuit. She made it to Yale without affirmative action and race-based preferences. In a man's world, she was at the top of her field. How did she manage to accomplish so much? By hard work and perseverance. Thank you for writing about her. May the Holy Spirit comfort all who mourn.

As a black woman with sickle cell disease I give Dr. Wethers a resounding THANK YOU. She is a heroine and has vastly improved the hard lives of people like me. This is the sort of human who should be lauded on front pages, not nonsense from crazy people about building walls.
