El Chapo smuggled his drugs and loots through tunnel, not through the border. trump needs to get this through his thick head, demanding five and half billions for steel wall and denying more than eighty thousands of federal workers without pay will not work. The smugglers will smuggle anyways. While hard working Americans can`t pay their mortgage or have food on the table. Thank you all the good seminarians who are helping those in needs.

When you lie down with snakes, etc., etc.....
Srini (Texas)
Yes - El Chapo will rot in prison for the rest of his life. Meanwhile, the white suburban Americans, who are the main consumers of the drugs he exported, will live their sedated lives happily ever after and find a new drug dealer.
Peter I Berman (Norwalk, CT)
@Srini The lingering quesiton is why illegal drug users in the US who support a huge illegal drug operation with devastating results on our inner city populations share none of the consequences or blame of promoting such as devasting industry. Maybe the sad truth is that using illegal drugs is just not a crime. Only supplying the drugs is a crime.

Am I the only one that wants to see a picture of El Chapo and his wife wearing matching burgundy velvet smoking jackets in court? I understand cameras probably aren’t allowed in court so will settle for classic courtroom drawings. Oh, and please include the shoes as I have no idea what footwear one should wear with such jackets in court. Thanks!
Alexandra Hamilton (NYC)
Embroidered velvet slippers I should think, or perhaps just loafers.
Robert Osuna (New York)
For all of Chapós money his lawyers can’t do a basic cross examination. You never ask a witness on cross examination a “why” question. You only ask yes or no questions. So you ask “ you were lying when you denied being his mistress. Yes. When you ask the why question you get the awful answer “he would hurt my family.” You learn this in law school trial advocacy class. To make a simple blunder like this in a trial of this magnitude is really unforgivable. Chapo is toast.
Stephen (Vancouver)
I think that’s a bit unfair as we don’t have the transcript - she may have already said something similar so there may have no real downside to the question. While I agree one should be careful with a “Why” question, if witnesses are properly boxed in it can be a powerful question.

Que? How'd she get from empanada seller to a politician?
calleefornia (SF Bay Area)
@Willy Indeed. And how was she a "lawmaker?" Que?

"...the married couple took what seemed to be symbolic revenge on her, appearing in court in matching burgundy velvet smoking jackets...." Perhaps Mr. Guzman, who will spend the rest of his life in a Federal maximum security prison, will be able to trade his precious smoking jacket to a guard or another prisoner for a pack of cigarettes.

As we say about our own prosaic Chicago Outfit personnel, those whose grandparents were Capone's support staff, "dance with the Devil, ya get burnt."
Jay (Mercer Island)
Well, with El Chapo on trial and presumably in prison for life afterwards, can I assume that drug smuggling accross the border has now ended and we have no need for the wall.
R.Terrance (Detroit)
Kind of wondering here. Is the trial in Spanish or English? And if there is an appeal due to the El Chapo being found guilty, if the translation from spanish to english possibly result in some reversable error due to a wrong or a misunderstanding of a translation?
Mary (NY)
Does she want sympathy? Thats what happens when you commit adultery.
Talbot (New York)
I want to hear how Ms Sanchez--El Chapo's mistress since she was 21--got a career as a "lawmaker". More surprising, she was a "lawmaker from Sinaloa"--isn't that a contradiction in terms? And even more suprising, she was impeached after 4 years, in 2016. The story says she lost her job because of Mr Guzman. I speculate she only got it because of him.
Jon (Bronx)
@Talbot wow, talk about missing the point, the story is the poison that is 'El Chapo' and how he ruins lives. Wake up.
Carson Drew (River Heights)
@Talbot: Donald Trump is President of the United States. Any absurdity is possible. He'll probably be impeached, too.
maria5553 (nyc)
I don't understand what the big deal is about the jackets, I imagine that is the last thing that she can possibly care about at this moment. I have been mildly interested in the mistress's story, otherwise I'm finding this whole el chapo thing a bore.
Ruby Tuesday (New Jersey)
@maria5553 Really a bore?
barnaby33 (San Diego)
I want to hear more about the bribes to Mexican officials, especially Pena! What's a Telenovela without a good plot twist!
Annie Gramson Hill (Mount Kisco, NY)
El Chapo will spend the rest of his life in prison, and probably plenty of people around him will too. Meanwhile, the reprehensible Sackler family, responsible for initiating the opioid crisis by deliberately lying about the dangers of OxyContin will continue to enjoy their billions and billions of dollars. Maybe if El Chapo had more than a second grade education he would have understood that you have to spread that money around to politicians and government officials if you want to avoid accountability for your actions.
Liliana (Mexico City)
He did spread his money around to politicians but he’s not white collar.
hfdru (Tucson, AZ)
I agree with you a 100%. I guess Big pharma is also too big to fail to be prosecuted. Like the banks that we had to bailout and never prosecuted. Eric Holders excuse is he saw what happened to the employees of the big accounting firm Arthur Anderson that was forced to close during the S&L fiasco. So many of them were unemployed. He assumed they could never get another job. I still feel very sorry for those employees when I pass them begging on the streets with signs saying "will work for tax preparation @Annie Gramson Hill
LarryAt27N (north florida)
@Annie Gramson Hill Apparently you missed the news. He spread plenty of money -- massive amounts -- on Mexican politicians and government officials.
Ms. Sofie (<br/>)
So she met him at 21 and by 29 she has a separate family, is a lawmaker and bulk-weed aficionado. Am I missing the something, yes I am. There way more to her story.
DCC (NYC)
Thank-you Alan, for your insightful reporting on El Chapo. So, El Chapo's wife showed her allegiance to the kingpin by wearing the same burgundy velvet smoking jacket that he wore to his trial. This is laughable because his wife will likely never see him again outside of a prison. I'm sure El Chapo "tucked away" part of the billions that he earned from drug tracking for his wife and children. Time will pass, his wife can divorce him and marry another billionaire. El Chapo can sit in his cell and ask to be shown pictures of the time he and Emma wore matching smoking jackets.
Mary (NY)
@DCC youre assuming he wont escape -- again.
