Love the idea of a Denzel lunch plus bag of pivotal memorabilia. The mentor-ly reaching out, and laying out. It sounds tender, supportive and true.

"If Beale Street could Talk" is a ponderous movie whose actual plot and dialog take up a fraction of the film - the remainder is spent in long takes with actors giving meaningful glances. The pace is so sloooooow, the plot minimal, the kind of movie that "the critics" love but that bores everyone else to tears.
@DebbieR loved it and I’m not a critic.

"..because the filmmakers that moved me the most -Claire Denis. Wong Kar-wai, Jean Luc-Godard-were not making movies for me, Barry Jenkins." What an enlightening comment.

Barry Jenkins loves black people.
Without apology, polemic, or justification.
That love infuses his films and spills onto the viewer.
How to not love him back?

As soon as 'Moonlight' ended I turned to my friend in the theatre and said it could easily be best picture that year. It was something new and original and beautiful, even if it wasn't 'made for me' as the article puts it. Hoping Mr Jenkins can keep doing his thing and ignore the noise.
