i have never, in all my life, here in NYC (where i was born and raised on probably more italian restaurants than there are in italy) or even in the south where there are only domino's and pizza hut pizza-like foods, nor in california have i ever -- ever! -- seen anyone in the US dip their crust in ranch dressing. i have learned to tolerate those who order ham and pineapple, i've made peace with friends who top with pepparoni and multiple other toppings, but i draw the line at dipping your pizza crust in ranch dressing. do that and you're out! good for australians for having their own italian derived customs, but don't blame that one on us.

@ bronxbee I applaud wholeheartedly the purity of your pizza-eating habits. It is the globalization of national dishes that denature the original and traditional eating customs and proper table manners.

@bronxbee Here in ever trendy Portland we have Ranch Pizza, with two locations! Yes, that is ranch as in dressing. It is only a matter of time before there is an outpost in Brooklyn. Fortunately for New Yorkers, it would probably fail like other Portland transplants Pok Pok NY and Bunk.

@bronxbee I do not do it, but I know many people who do. And have done so since the early 90’s. Don’t knock it til you try it.

Despite Ms. Rodell's eloquent prose, I found the menus disappointing. The emphasis is clearly on pasta and pizza, both plebeian components of the all-Italian cuisine. Looking at the photos showing no flatware, I wondered how does one take the dishes shown in a style of good table manners.
