I would object to the term "lowly computer technician". It is denigrating and frequently inaccurate. For example, Clifford Stoll was an astronomer with advanced degrees who happened to detect an anomaly while trying to troubleshoot his instruments. In many instances, particularly when the information society was nascent, the pioneers of our current technological age were trained in other professional fields.
