What a sad, grave situation. Freedom of speech is something we often take for granted in the USA. I hope that the citizens of Turkey find their way to greater freedom and justice.

This is what life is like when you let Democracy be usurped by power hungry politicians.

I was taught to hate the Turkish people for what they did to my ancestors. I refused for my entire life to hate an entire nationality. Now I question those beliefs.

Kanter is right to worry. Erdogan's agents and enforcers brutally attacked a small group of peaceful anti-Erdogan protestors directly in front of the White House in 2017. I believe Trump's words and actions convinced Erdogan that he could get away with this.

A secret organization that sneaks into the government to end democratic rule? There are Republicans in Turkey?

Turkey’s state-run news agency reported that prosecutors were seeking to sentence Enes Kanter to more than four years in jail on charges that he had insulted Erdogan on social media. Nice place that Erdogan has turned Turkey into.

Big shame on you Turks and your cracking institutions! The country is moving towards a unprecedented collapse with losing its best talents. If someone criticizes Erdogan or his close circle even with a very light and decent way, he/she would face outrages outcome(jail, endless court sessions etc.) because “The sultan” will definitely make him/her pays for it in any way... The whole country surrendered itself to his personal whim and chimeras

Yet the NYT happily gives this murderous dictator Erdogan space on it's Op-Ed, for the simple reason is that he is the face of the Anti-Saudi movement, and given the dictum of "my enemy's enemy must be my friend", this august newspaper gave a Turkish autocrat room on it's pages. Another shameful episode from the NYT during this terrible presidency.

Kanter's fears are well justified. Look at the violence perpetrated against anti-Erdogan protestors in front of the White House by Turkish agents and enforcers in 2017. The brutal undemocratic Erdogan no doubt felt that Trump would overlook or approve of his violence, after Trump's bizarre and inappropriate expressions of affection and respect for him.

I don’t thing going to London poses a bigger risk than being elsewhere in the USA. However, one may recall two years ago several of Erdogan’s bodyguards stopped their cars in a motorcade in Washington DC and stepped out and administered blows to lawful demonstrates on the sidewalk. So, certainly, distrust in general and globally is justified. But no distinction between a great city with a great police force which London has.
