Anyone else annoyed that the lava "explodes" BEFORE it's hit by the mallet? Every time.

I doubt the suits were intended to protect against radiation, at least in the usual sense of the word. Perhaps infrared radiation?

Thermal radiation emitted by the hot lava...similar to the heat you feel from a toaster or a glowing electric hot plate. The energy emitted is proportional to the absolute temperature of the lava raised to the fourth power---a lot of energy emitted demands the protection.
