Great reporting....LAVA BOMB sounds like a great name for a band as well. Thanks!

Anyone else annoyed that the lava "explodes" BEFORE it's hit by the mallet? Every time. Okay, back to important things...
Michael (PA)
Good to know. If I’m around any molten lava and water in the future I’ll know to stay away.
Just me (Pgh,PA)
I think they meant heat radiation...science is not only for nerds!

Whoa! Being a scientist is FUN!
Cary (Oregon)
I doubt the suits were intended to protect against radiation, at least in the usual sense of the word. Perhaps infrared radiation? And I love the sledge hammer contraption. Science marches on!
Ed (New England)
@Cary Thermal radiation emitted by the hot lava...similar to the heat you feel from a toaster or a glowing electric hot plate. The energy emitted is proportional to the absolute temperature of the lava raised to the fourth power---a lot of energy emitted demands the protection.
