Joseph Campbell would be proud of this fine article on mythology and its powerful effect on humanity.

The placebo effect is weaponized by the shamans, witch doctors and witches of all stripes to effect their power over beleivers.
As someone who lived in a Caribbean country for years, I can find these novels no more than comical excuses for cultural brutality and practical incompetence, always covered by whining excuses about colonialism. Decent accounting is is not "colonial."
Incidentally, a fair number of bahwnheahs (Caribbean natives) believe Wakanda is real, as opposed to being invented by a couple white Jewish guys in a comic book. Reparations are needed here, but where to start.

Thank you for this. All of the authors and stories were unknown to me.
Ave, Julian Lucas! Such erudition!

Kintu is one of the best novels I read in 2018, and am currently reading it for the second time. It's refreshing to have a novel focused on East Africa that has no colonial mention whatsoever, and while it does focus on the masculinity aspect quite a lot - the quiet heroes are the women and their stories, which is what really shines. A must read.

Like the Jungian archetypes, myths and family stories are strong influences on personal outcomes. A beautifully written, thoughtfully constructed critique of these books and their backstories.
