Our modern world is failing in many, MANY ways. We all know it is true. Yes, it is succeeding in other ways, but on balance, is it a success or teetering towards inevitable failure?

This is really horrible. I'm 69 and of course we actually played outside all the time - summer and winter. My kids played outside, but currently, in my neighborhood, I hardly ever see kids out playing. Why would the kids not be playing out? The parents are fearful or all the kids activities must be directed by the parents? When I was a kid we played in the neighborhood, the woods and down by the creek (writing that it sounds idyllic now).

A couple of days ago there was an opinion piece in the NYT that basically argued that the reason for the epidemic of obesity was.......wait for this..,..,the difficulty obtaining bariatric surgery. As if it is more difficult to obtain this surgery now than it was 30 years ago and so that is why we have seen almost unbelievable increases in obesity and obsesity-related health problems. All of the studies show that in the past 30 years people now (1) eat more, and (2) move less. Now we see that these sedentary patterns begin at a very young age. No matter..Just give them bariatric surgery in 30 years.

This is one cause of childhood obesity.

It is school. And then at 11, moving to a more serious environment where there are fewer recesses and playtimes. Not a surprise at all.

This must be mainly due to sitting still in the classes, accessibility to mobile phones, computers, watching TV and playing video games. They must be made to play outside rather than getting involved with the modern gadgets. Even classroom activities can be moved outside as well on occasions depending upon weather. Moreover there should be provision in the school syllabus for playing outdoor games for one hour a day.
