Colbert Says an Innocent Homage to George Bush Sounded Like Trump-Bashing

"Obama makes Trump look like a bad President, just by sitting next to him", says Colbert, then cuts to a photo from the funeral. All good, fair enough, except that Obama was NOT sitting next to Trump in that very photo; he was sitting next to Melania. Are women just space-savers to this Colbert guy?

Only among the Washington DC establishment and crummy late night talk shows are funerals weaponized for the purpose of scoring political points. Can't people be any better? Are they proud of themselves? Why?

Why does everything in the public sphere have to go through a "Trump filter"? Yes, President George H. W. Bush was different, a product of his generation and upbringing, and not at all like Trump. Do all funerals now have to pass the "Trump filter"? Can we eulogize Aunt Betty or Uncle Fred and her kindness without offending Trump? Yes it is possible to do comparisons between Trump and former presidents of anyone else. But not every public platform is about Trump. If Trump supporters feel like the eulogies are digs against their Dear-Leader that is their problem. Get a grip folks, generally we don't say nasty things about the deceased, even if we didn't like them when they were alive.

To those who found Colbert et al offensive, I suggest you watch MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell, who opened his show last night (Dec 5) with a clip of Senator Alan Simpson speaking at Bush's funeral. O'Donnell, referencing a statement attributed to Simpson's mother - " Hatred corrodes the container it's carried in" - proceeded to compare the late president and the current president, citing factual statements. Take a look. It was very profound.

More and more, it’s come to light just how awkward Drumpf is in social situations. He has repeatedly proved himself to be the odd man-child out at summits and meetings on the world stage. His behavior at HW’s service showed a lack of respect and an inability to pay tribute not just to HW, but to his predecessors.

@Molly Bloom More and more, it's come to light just how awkward anyone who unironically writes "Drumpf" is in social situations. Their reactions to HW's service show a lack of respect and an inability to pay tribute not just to HW, but to his predecessors.

@asdfj For a sample of actual satire, see Jonathan Swift.

Any comments by any media about those attending this funeral is an indirect insulted to the departed President Bush. We have become a nation that does not even respect it dead anymore.
asdfj (NY)
@Alex Donkersloot It's not a news item unless "journalists" can shoehorn in a half dozen insults about Trump!
Paul P (Greensboro,nc)
Nice try, the presence of a man with the character of Trump, is an insult to the memory of Bush and everything he stood for. It isn't the media, but us as a country, that have sullied not only Bush, but every one of his predecessors.

@asdfj They can't help he provides so much material.
Réal Morrissette (Canada)
Trump at Bush funeral was that misfit permitted to be part of the ceremony out of pity. Really, it seems that very few people are attracted to Trump and his hate and bad attitude. I guess that the only way for Trump to attract good people is that he shrinks himself... until he becomes a black hole.
Scott Werden (Maui, HI)
@Réal Morrissette Yes, Trump is a misfit but the irony is that as much as he appears to be a buffoon and a pariah, he has a huge following and the 2020 election can easily go his way unless the Democrats put up a good candidate with a good message.
Jbugko (Pittsburgh, pa)
@Scott Werden It's not really as huge as he keeps claiming it is. But as far as good candidates go, Democrats have very good candidates. Especially compared to what the Republican party whittled it down to in 2016, i.e., a man who had to settle out of court on 3 class actions accusing him of fraud and racketeering, who filed for bankruptcy 6 times, whom no one in his own state voted for, who lost the popular vote by an insanely wide margin, and who had to be given a psychological evaluation recently, only it was performed by a doctor nicknamed "Candyman".
Edgar Numrich (Portland, Oregon)
@Scott Werden That huge following serves to demonstrate the real trouble within people in this country ~ any healing for which goes way beyond trying to "fix stupid"; or throwing the Bible at them; is indeed all-but-unknown; and likely impossible.

Colbert is a moron who needs different material. He should pick on Democrats and leave out great President Trump alone.
Imperato (NYC)
@NYC Dweller this must be sarcasm
Eli (RI)
@NYC Dweller It is possible that Trump is not a moron. Trump may just pretend to be moron, but truly be a degenerate pervert. Or maybe Trump is not that evil instead he may just be the low IQ moron he appears to be. ...but Colbert is definitely not a moron. Colbert is way too smart to be a moron.

Colbert has kept us from getting depressed for two years. Linda and I turn him on every night, curled up with glasses of red wine, prepared to laugh our asses off. We didn't much care for Bush Sr. Iraq invasion, oil soaked, and reluctant to do much of anything for the common man. Neither did many who attended the funeral. Poppy accomplished much in death, by showing the contrast between an honest and well meaning leader and a lying, stealing charlatan. A third of us will still support the President, since Fox, Rush, and their big box preacher tell them to. Go ahead and let them build shrines to him after he resigns; the over/under is 10 months from now. And let's allow Trump to educate them by his negative examples, as the global warming denial, thievery, viciousness, and double dealing fully come to life. We can only hope that it's not too late to right the nation's course, and address our real problems.
asdfj (NY)
@Mike Roddy And here we find exemplary samples of the demographic who thinks "Drumpf" and "fat cheeto man" are funny insults -- the kind of people who unironically get depressed by the eternal circus of politics. Get a grip!
Jbugko (Pittsburgh, pa)
@asdfj There are better names suitable for Soviet Agent Orange. But if you're inclined to soak up Trump's "ascerbic" wit when he calls a woman a "fat pig" or at least 20 people or so as having "very low ratings" then you go right ahead and enjoy that with whatever Trump's loyalists happen to be drinking (I'm guessing it's a n overpriced bottle of Trump Vodka, corked).
Edgar Numrich (Portland, Oregon)
Keying off "The Art of the Deal", Trump will no doubt claim his sincere attendance at this funeral for George H. W. Bush will allow him to skip his own.
