Global warming is affecting biodiversity and biocultural diversity. The article does a good job explaining, but I would like to add, things like removing natural habitats, land clearing – removing trees from the forest also adds to global warming. It also affects wild salmon, which is a cultural keystone species to Native American tribes. When the water is too warm, the fish develop diseases that easily spread causing thousands of fish to die. It also cause ocean acidification. Also by removing things like language indirectly contributes to global warming and loss of biodiversity. When the land was stolen from the Natives, they were forced to all speak English, losing certain words that explained how to tend to the land. Many of the languages are long gone, but there are some that are still around but are severely threatened languages. If those languages are restored, Native people can perhaps restore native species, as such was the case with the sea turtles in Hawaii (look it up). Also understanding indigenous science will help global warming by knowing how the land, plants, and everything work together
Climate change has threatened many species in the ocean. Due to ocean acidification, coral reefs are disappearing at a fast rate and causing other marine life that survive within the reefs to disappear. By reducing carbon footprint and aiming for a neutral carbon foot print, there is hope to help the climate change slowly back to a more stable and cooler temperature. Using public transportation or biking to work/school and can reduce CO2 gases. Reducing greenhouse gases by eating a healthier diet, turning off/ unplugging electrical devices, and planting a garden can really help. Guerilla gardening can also be done and can be shared with local communities.
I agree, even a fewer more degrees change in temperatures can make a large difference on our planet. Climate change affects everything and everyone, our crops, animals such as polar bears which are a threatened species, and even us, especially the indigenous who are affected the most severely. It destroys habitats, contributing to the extinction of species. It is a threat to biocultural diversity which is a term describing both biological and cultural diversity; it may include genetic or cultural difference, the way a culture may interact with nature such as plants, animals, or the environment, and also cultural practices. We should try lowering our carbon footprint by limiting our use of traditional vehicles and energy, while possibly seeking out more environmental friendly products and eating organic and less meat.
