In Her New Book, Michelle Obama Denounces Trump’s Sexism and His Promotion of the ‘Birther’ Conspiracy

That’s a good photo of Michelle on the cover. I think we all looked, and felt better when Obama was the prez.
Diane E. (Saratoga Springs, NY)
I, too, wonder where the bottom will be in the current administration. I, too, have lost sleep over the intent of DJT who is a corruptible man and should not be President. Seeing President Obama back in the political arena during midterm campaigns and now Michelle Obama's book and tour will remind this country of the better side of Americans. There is no comparison between the two Presidencies. The Republicans should have been wiser and kinder 10 years ago - because they did not know how good we had it.
GWPDA (Arizona)
I like Michele Obama. I like the fact that she gardens. I like the fact that she's smart and kind. I like the fact that she takes care of her Dogs, her Children, her Mother and her Husband. I like the fact that she lives a decent and human life. I wish her well and and regard her as an exceedingly good-hearted human being, with both style and grace. I do not like the extraordinarily unpleasant and ignorant individual who is now living in the White House.
vs (Somewhere in USA)
Class vs Crass, that is the difference between the past president and his family and the present.
AnnamarieF. (Chicago)
Michelle Obama is courageous. Can any of us imagine how she managed to be reticent and composed when Trump repeatedly asserted that her husband was not born in the U.S.? It was nothing short of a vicious ploy to garner publicity for Trump. He knows how to manipulate certain media outlets. With sheer sensationalism.
Ann (Metrowest, MA)
Joni Mitchell wisely observed, "You don't know what you've got till it's gone ..." Most Americans undoubtedly DID know, but right now, EVERYONE should be lamenting what we've lost: the integrity, the grace, and the classiness of the Obamas. The current "pretender" to the office is such a contrast, and such a strikingly abysmal one, too. Looking forward to reading Mrs. Obama's book, and savoring memories of a time when America had a president and first lady of whom we could be truly, truly proud.
Chris n (Seattle,WA)
Dear Lord: can we please go back to a time when we had a First Family I loved and admired (and still do)?!
Alice's Restaurant (PB San Diego)
@Chris n That would be Truman.
Brigitte (MA)
At first, one vocabulary caught my eye. 'Birther', what is it? Trump did contribute; enriching our dictionary. Of course, it is a sarcasm. An enthralling 'Birther' is a newly created word. Mrs Obama has an unquestionable care, devotion and love for her family. She isn't a yapping person, never shall she be. Her wisdom and consideration were shown when she was announcing a speech in 2009. In one conference or social gathering which was regarding children, she said that there was no magic wand and we must bear patience for the country (or Mr Obama's presidency) to thrive and shine. Indeed, sweat and muscle in our effort are the genuine remedies and beans to sprout. Hilary Clinton does show her beans which are sprouting. Without flagging white, she continues to stand still. Should we throw another dice for another hope? In contrast, those in Trump's are magic beans which only exist in fairy tale. There is no control if the sprout will grow to be a friend or a foe. In a berserk moment, nothing except calamity will befall. We are swirling in an era of turmoil and uncertainty. Without an experience of residing or working for the Oval Office, perhaps many of us cannot comment on his administration, affairs or skills. However, the dissatisfaction in his egotism is sworn.
Caveat Emptor (New Jersey )
Who cares what the petulant, childish trump thinks of this book? He who can hardly string together a sentence that makes sense is in no position to judge First Lady Obama. She is so superior to him in intelligence, compassion, judgement, integrity, and virtually any other good quality one can think of, that he plans by comparison. She is correct to worry about how low our country can sink under the weight of his incompetence and immorality, however.
Joan Staples (Chicago)
@Caveat Emptor Someone should remind Trump that Mrs. Trump so admired Mrs. Obama, that Mrs. Obama's words were "borrowed" by Mrs. Trump. Many of us know about President Trump's shortcomings. Right now, I am more concerned about the policies that he and the Republicans are advocating for our lives.
me in Upstate (New York)
Oh Michelle! I miss you so much. I cannot wait to read your book!! I do wish this review buried the bit about Trump somewhere ... it's a shame to put him anywhere near her. Michelle's stellar, honest, straightforward. Let's get the NYTimes to change the header on this article, please.
CP (Boston, MA)
Michelle, put that money in a war chest and run for President! (A person can dream.) The Obamas embody the best of America and its values. Remember values? The Trump presidency is a home invasion nightmare.
Jane MacGreevy (St Louis, MO)
I would prefer a different picture to accompany this article. I find this overly dark and suspicious looking. Surely you have better photographs with which to illustrate the content.
Milton Lewis (Hamilton Ontario)
The color of her skin does not matter. This First Lady is a lady.Trump’s insulting behavior toward her husband is unforgivable.Trump’s indecent treatment of Obama while President was a taste of the vulgarity of the Trump presidency. No one can claim to be surprised by Trump’s corruption and debasement of the office of the president.
IR (toronto)
Bing shining examples the Obamas breathe life and continuity into Elenor's dream America: “Pit race against race, religion against religion, prejudice against prejudice. Divide and conquer! We must not let that happen here.” ― Eleanor Roosevelt
Mike Filion (Denver, CO)
Here is another example of what is wrong with Republicans. When the Obama is a Muslim lie was started, John McCain is the only one who refutiated it, which was during the 2008 election. Even worse-the voters so desperate to get a Republican into office that they believed and perpetuated the lie. The Republican part and Evangelical Christians have much to answer for.
Grabski (Morris County, NJ)
Who wrote the book, though?
Ellen Burns (Connecticut)
Why would you suggest she didn’t write the book herself? A Princeton graduate with a Harvard law degree?
MarcAnthony (Philadelphia, Pa)
I miss the Obamas so much, I’m on the verge of crying. Then I think of that orange poltergeist, and I stifle my tears, clench my fist and teeth until my palms grow numb and jaw aches; while I steel myself for the next two years, confidant in the knowledge that he won’t change and that we must fight! We may be experiencing the twilight of this nation, but this past Tuesday’s results thunders, “Not yet!”
Matt (Brooklyn)
Such a class act—both Michelle and her husband. It heartens me to know she has taken public umbrage with Trump’s racist takedown of President Obama’s legitimacy. The difference in the quality of the character of these two presidents could not be greater. It saddens me that we will never be able to read a history of U.S. presidents without the stain of a huckster like Trump on the office.
JJ (Chicago)
I hope the proceeds of the LiveNation tour are going to charity 100%. Otherwise, that's a pretty big money grab, what with $3K tickets and all.
BillBo (NYC)
I don’t know how politicians like Rick Scott can sleep at night knowing he’s subverting people’s right to vote and to choose the winner. Claiming the dems are committing fraud is disgusting. Can you imagine the Obama’s behaving in the same way? Of course not.
DaDa (Chicago)
Trying to imagine a greater contrast between the class of Michelle Obama and that low life now soiling the Oval office; if only we could scrape him off the bottom of our shoes and move on.
sammy zoso (Chicago)
Impossible to get away from the fake president at any time even in a nice story about a very smart and classy lady. Viva La Obamas!!
Rebecca L (Los Angeles)
Oh NYTimes, must you make everything about Trump? He goes low...and the Times goes right along. The article says that the book is almost entirely devoid of discussion about Trump, yet that's what the article leads with and that's what it ends with. Why?
Heather (Vine)
Trump's comment is his usual mix of insanity and lies. Wow.
R. Anderson (South Carolina)
From what I have read and heard, trump acts out like a bully and needs to be challenged and/or called out just as the media and private citizens are doing. It may be hearsay but if there is Evidence on video or on tape or social media that he is indeed a bully, a misogynist, a racist, a liar, then he should be dealt with accordingly by the voters and, if necessary, by the courts.
Ben (Elizabeth,NJ)
Remember back just a few short years - when the First Lady was truly an inspiring lady and the President was a gentleman who, even if you didn't agree with him, was a gentleman. And now, look how fast and how far we have fallen. Will we ever return to our former glory? We can only hope.
leftcoast (San Francisco)
We had a true Camelot and a lot of us now realize how much we took it for granted. At least I did, I took it for granted that a president would have integrity, be decent, gracious, diplomatic and benevolent. I will never take that for granted again.
Roy (NH)
I had the pleasure of meeting then-candidate Barack Obama and his family a couple of times back in the 2008 campaign (one of the benefits of living in New Hampshire). They were and are such intelligent, classy, empathetic people. It is such a shame that voters tend to elect Presidents who are the exact opposite of their predecessor in as many ways as possible.
John Collinge (Bethesda, Md)
She speaks the truth to what passes for power these days if not for morality and integrity. She is another strong and passionate African American woman from whom we all can learn a lot. When her husband won my African American wife could not have been more thrilled and proud. Nor, could she have been more hopeful that we finally were growing up as a country. Michelle Obama through her continuing strength and integrity is helping to keep that dream alive and to water the seeds so many have planted until their next flowering. Thank you gallant lady for this memoir and for all that you mean to this country and what this country can be at its' best.
Angel (NYC)
I would love to see Ms. Obama run for President against Trump. She would win. She would win against anyone, but the win against Trump would be very sweet.
Victor (Santa Monica)
As Barack Obama made clear in his second book, his wife has a strong materialistic streak, as her book tour makes clear. They made it, which is what they, or at least she, wanted. They took care of Wall Street but they didn't do much for ordinary people, which is why we now have Trump as president. The Obamas should step aside and let us get on with the business of defeating the dark forces and creating a decent and democratic government. In that battle the Obamas are a liability.
Bashh1 (Philadelphia)
Get over it. She's selling a book, which is pretty much what every other ex-president and his wife have done after leaving office.
Shelly (New York)
So is it bad for them to want to make it, but not for ordinary people to have ambition? I imagine the US car companies would have been a mess if we had Trump as President after the recession. He also wouldn’t have bothered to help ordinary people with their mortgages, since his favorites at Fox would have yelled about it being welfare.
Margo Channing (NYC)
Par for the course President Bone Spurs makes it all about him. I miss the Obama's and the class they lent to the office of President and First Lady. Where is that class now? I didn't always agree with the man or his views but there is a lot to be proud of. Thank President and Mrs. Obama for showing us how it's supposed to be done.
Tom (Boulder)
Among the many things I'm incredibly grateful to Michelle Obama for is that she is an unqualified role model for my daughter. In every respect. It's hard for girls to find guiding lights in public figures, and Michelle is the one.
AP18 (Oregon)
I've always believed that the best leaders are not the ones who pursue leadership, but those who rise to the occasion and assume the mantle of leadership in order to serve the greater good, i.e., those who have leadership thrust upon them. Michelle for President.
Davelds (Montville, NJess)
No Mr Trump, President Obama presided over the strongest military the world has ever seen. We will not forgive YOU for abandoning the Paris Climate Accord and gutting other environmental protections. These terrible policies will cause long term harm to the nation. President Obama didn't waste 50 million dollars on some cheap stunt to protect our borders from women and children who walked 2000 miles to try and save their lives.
SunshineHayfields (PNW)
I admire her so much! She is such a classy, smart lady and a great role model!
MenLA (Los Angeles)
A class act who did make it look easy. She came across as everyone's friend - a real mensch.
SridharC (New York)
She signifies strength of character in many ways in striking contrast to Trump who neither has character nor a soul. I am not sure why I am even comparing them. To share difficult details about child bearing and infertility takes courage and probably will end up helping many women and their health care providers who struggle to deal with this difficult issue. For that reason alone I would recommend this book to just about anyone. And I am in health care.
MAG (NJ)
The epitome of class despite their politics. Wonder if we will ever get back to some sort of decency after this disaster of a president.
RJF (Toronto)
The Obama's certainly carried themselves very well and represented the office of the president with utmost dignity and respect. They understood that they were the people's servants duty bound to work for the good of the nation and to generate international good will and cooperation for the benefit of mankind. Donald Trump is the exact opposite with a singular vision of mankind, himself! "From Class to Crass" could be a suitable title for Trump's memoir.
greatnfi (Cincinnati, Ohio)
Surely, you didn't expect her to call Trump "a Great Guy."
Ernest Montague (Oakland, CA)
I don't buy or support politicians and family who write books, as a rule. It's a rule I won't break in this case. Like most Presidents, Obama and family came to the White House broke and leave massively wealthy. It's all legal. That given, it's just more gossip.
DENOTE MORDANT (CA)
The Obamas’ are classy, intelligent, thoughtful people. Trump is the antithesis. I just realized in thinking about the Obamas’ how peaceful it felt and as soon as I reflected on Trump, how conflicted I became. The lesson is that Trump’s very existence in the presidency automatically creates conflicted thought. He must go if we want peace and quiet with competent governance.
Karen Cormac-Jones (Neverland)
I didn't think it possible for Michelle Obama to be any more beautiful than she was when FLOTUS, but she is even more beautiful today than before. And like her husband, she is so intelligent, so articulate, so calm under pressure, so WISE. If Eleanore Roosevelt merged with Helen of Troy, she would be Michelle Obama. I've read all of President Obama's books, so I know the story of how they met (and how persistent he was to get her to agree to lunch) - so I can't wait to read her autobiography!
Third Day (UK)
A beautiful, beautiful lady.
Sarah (New York City)
How disappointing that the headline focuses on him. I can only imagine how incredible this book is, and of all the things to mention, it's him. Way to perpetuate the horribly misguided and mishandled power. She and we deserve way better.
Hr (Ca)
What a marvelous and inspiring woman and First Lady Michelle Obama has been. Can’t wait to buy out her book just in time for all my holiday gifting. She is a blessing to the country, the best Flotus of all my years.
Kim Findlay (New England)
The Obamas were the ultimate in grace and intelligence for me. They handled the most personal of attacks quietly, staying positive, maintaining strength with their confidence. It's hard to believe that anyone would prefer Trump's very coarse narcissism. He's the one who's been given everything. I often wonder what caused his mean spirit.
Richard Phelps (Flagstaff, AZ)
"I continue to be put off by the nastiness". So are many, many other people Mrs. Obama. The idea that denigrating one's opponent is the best way to win approval (and election) contributes a lot to Government's overall approval rating which hovers around 90% unfavorable. How great it would be if people would enter politics who, if they didn't have something positive to say about someone else, at least kept their opinions to themselves. Perhaps you could be one of the few to adopt such an honorable approach to serving out country which at present is so lacking in those who hold office today?
Rosa lord (Winchester va)
My objection to the book is the cover: women having sexually suggestive photos, such as this one, to sell the book. Why not Mrs. Obama as an ordinary mother, jeans and t shirts; or the lawyer, in court appropriate dress? Or if she wants to bear her muscular shoulder and forearms, why not in a swimsuit at the beach with her children? Women continue to de-equalize themselves when they rely on their more sexual appearances. I’m envious of Mrs. Obama’s “guns”, and like Rosie the Riveter, would approve that approach to the cover. This cover reminds me of Helen Mirren on the cover of the AARP magazine, which I found sleazy and dehumanizing for women. Can’t complain about Trump, Kavanaugh, Clarence Thomas, and the rest of the men who target women when you make yourself the bullseye! Thanks,Michelle, for continuing the status quo. Doubt that RBG would choose this depiction of herself. I’ll choose the latter model.
Concerned Citizen (California )
Why can't a woman be intelligent and pose for pictures? In her book cover, I see the exact opposite of what you wrote. I see permission for me to pursue my graduate degree and be as glamorous as I want to be. So tired of the feminists telling women what they should or should not be. Let women live their lives and pose however they want.
Liberty Apples (Providence)
When Trump's memoir is ghost-written, one reviewer is sure to repeat the harshest of all reviews: The covers of this book are too far apart.
Carson Drew (River Heights)
Trump's sole comment on Mrs. Obama's book is telling. He's envious of the significant wealth she and her husband are earning. There's a reason Donald Trump didn't pay taxes for 19 years. He's a failure. How many times did he file bankruptcy? Six? How many times did his father have to bail him out? He has never earned a dollar based on merit in his life.
Marjorie (Riverhead)
I'm so glad that Michelle Obama and Barack Obama are back in the public eye. The contrast between them and the current occupants of the White House couldn't be more stark. From class to crass. And I will never forgive DT for the birther lie either.
Peter Bear (Independence, CA)
I'm sick of hearing Trump say that President Obama depleted our military. Will some please correct this lie? The Democrats proposed a substantial defense bill at the time. The Republicans imposed a huge cut in government expenditure. *Everyone* in the military went up to Capital Hill and begged the Republicans to exempt the military. All the brass, again and again said it would decimate the military. Did the Republicans care? NO! They just went ahead and decimated the military. And ever since, those same Republicans plus Trump have been blaming President Obama for something the Republican Congress did. Regarding Michael Lewis's book, the Fifth Risk. The reason so few Americans actually know or appreciate what the government does is because there is a law -- passed by Republicans of course-- that prevents agencies from making public statements about their wonderful accomplishments. It's the most pernicious thing that exists. I can't find this law and Lewis only mentioned it once in passing. Will someone please find this law, inform the public and seek to overturn it? Thanks.
Xoxarle (Tampa)
Anything in the book detailing their discussions about whether or not to prosecute CIA torturers, or Bush Administration warmongers, or Wall Street fraudsters, or Big Pharma opioid drug pushers? I’m guessing not. After all, the Obamas had their backs. Ordinary Americans suffering foreclosure, or crippling medical bills, or stagnant wages, or gun massacre victims, or military on extended tours of duty in unwinnable wars, or jobs lost to outsourcing, or whistleblowers threatened with the Espionage Act, or civilian victims of drone attacks? Not so much.
Alexandra Hamilton (NYC)
She was First Lady, not an elected oficial so why would there be? In any case, Obama tried to enact gun control, did his best to make healthcare affordabke, tried to bolster the environment and tried to help immigrants and refugees. That he failed so often has more to do with the way the GOP behaved than with him.
richard wiesner (oregon)
Unless the President said more that is not printed here, I noticed that Mr. Trump's retort was about Mrs. Obama's husband and not her. Maybe Mr. Trump is smarter than I have given him credit for. He apparently understands that you don't get all up in Michelle Obama's face. She's got way better moves then Mr. Trump.
SM (USA)
Dear First Lady, In your humility and class you and President Obama exemplify what this country's best can be just as the current occupant of the White House and the GOP illustrate what the worst of this country has become. I am looking forward to the day when you are the democratic presidential candidate and I vote for you. Run Michelle, please.
Jamie Nichols (Santa Barbara)
Trump's feeble attempt to respond to Michelle Obama's criticism of him would be laughable if it weren't so pathetic and petulant. The only protection he has ever accorded our military was to avoid serving in it during the Vietnam War thanks to purported bunions. Sorry, purported bone spurs. His presence in a foxhole would surely have made our soldiers unsafe. So thank you Mr. President! By the way, in further adding to the bloated military budget unnecessarily, Trump has foolishly made this nation that much unsafer. Those billions of dollars could have been used to better educate our youth and on research and development to protect us from the biggest threats America now faces and will face in the future: cyberwarfare and climate change. We don't need more troops, foreign bases, nukes, submarines, bombers, and all the rest of the Pentagon and Trump's favorite toys and playthings. But when it comes to foolishness, Trump and his followers can't do enough of it.
Frank J Haydn (Washington DC)
I love Michelle Obama. I thought her husband brought great dignity to the office of the president. As things now stand, this couple will go down in history for any number of accomplishments. But getting into shaping "popular culture"... I do not see how that can possibly end well. To the Obamas, I would say hope for the best, but expect the worst.
TM (Boston)
I remember wondering how the Obamas could summon the grace to be cordial to the Trumps when they arrived at the White House on that bleak Inauguration Day. Fully understanding how gratuitously vicious Trump (and Melania) had been to President Obama, creating a blatant lying narrative about his place of birth, repeating it and never reneging even after the president produced his birth certificate! That alone should have made people realize how mentally ill Trump really was. The Obamas' grace under pressure that day was truly extraordinary. I would have loved to be there to smack Trump upside the head on behalf of the President.
Jim Dennis (Houston, Texas)
Right, Donald, one thing that kept me up at night was the fear that 5,000 unarmed refugees would overrun our army funded with only $700 billion per year. Sorry, but your fear campaign doesn't work on people who can think. Fortunately, you still have your base.
Ken (Houston Texas)
Michelle Obama is a class act, and I'm glad that she stated what she thinks of the current occupant in the White House.
victor (Texas)
I'm sure that Michelle's denunciations are of major concern to the President as he proceeds to manage the country away from the mess left by his predecessor.
Linda (Oklahoma)
Trump talks about Mrs. Obama's book and makes it all about him. He'll go to Paris now and make World War I all about him.
RNS (Piedmont Quebec Canada)
@Linda He's already done that. During his little talk with the press before heading to Paris he mentioned that he had seen the program, was sure it was going to be a big success and reasoned that was because the USA was going to be there. Too bad the US wasn't there when the First World War started. Ditto for the second one.
Robert (Out West)
Wait...you mean it wasn’t?
Socrates (Downtown Verona. NJ)
The Obamas were a complete American class act who tried their best to make America a better country in spite of a neo-Confederate right-wing dedicated to greed covered in racism, guns and fake religion. “I’ll give you a little controversy back, I’ll never forgive [President Barack Obama] for what he did to our U.S. military. It was depleted, and I had to fix it. What he did to our military made this country very unsafe for you and you and you,” .....said the draft-dodging Cadet-Bone-Spurs-In-Chief who refuses to pay his fair share of patriotic taxes and whose tax cuts for millionaires are currently bankrupting the national treasury. “As you grow older, you’ll see white men cheat black men every day of your life, but let me tell you something and don’t you forget it—whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from, that white man is trash” - Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird Hail to Barack and Michele Obama.... who were succeeded by a barrel of refuse.
CK (Rye)
@Socrates President Drone War is now working to be pals with GW Bush. Your ethics are driven by the most cheesy pop cultural fads.

@Socrates Bravo - well spoken
mariamsaunders (Toronto, Canada)
Count me in as one of her millions of fans. I will definitely be buying her book and, if she comes to Canada on her book tour, be attending the event. President and First Lady Obama are such a classy couple, who are all about giving, not taking, about building, not destroying. And if I sound like I'm gushing - well, I am!
ae (New York, NY)
Wish this headline was actually about Michelle Obama's book and not about Trump. So tired of him. It's too bad you mention him when its her moment to shine.
Alx (iowa city)
@ae Completely agree! NYT, it would be in all our best interests if Trump were less present in the papers and the 'drama' piece was tempered. All the papers are beginning to sound like tabloids...the digital headlines get worse and worse. This is a perfect example.
Rebecca S. (gulf coast)
@ae I was thinking the same thing!
adrienne (nyc)
@ae Well said my friend.
M. (NYC)
I wonder what Melania's memoirs will be like. Perhaps she will just take Michelle's and put a new title on it.
Socrates (Downtown Verona. NJ)
Melania's book title is out: "How To Illegally Immigrate By Marrying a Rich White Guy, Having An Anchor Baby and Chain-Migrating My Parents To US Citizenship"
dlb (washington, d.c.)
@M. Although Melania does have that low habit, it wouldn't make any sense--President Obama wanted to be with his wife for comfort after the Sandy Hook shootings, the Obamas were two caring adults living in the White House who actually liked one another. Wanting to be with your loved ones when something bad happens because it is comforting are feelings that normal people experience not Trump.
Marian S. (Vienna)
She did not immigrate illegally. I am no fan of the Trumps but let’s not distort the facts. And there is nothing wrong with immigration through marriage. “Anchor baby” is also just not right. Nothing wrong or illegal with bringing your parents to your new country either. We can question her choices and decisions but so far what she did was legal.
wally dunn (ny, ny)
I hear Melania's memoir is coming out next week...
RM (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada)
The Obamas were the epitome of intelligence, compassion, and class while they served. The current occupants of the White House couldn’t be further removed from them. I feel nauseated when I think of who is running your country, compared to who used to run it. Donald Trump is a disgrace to your nation. He will discredit all Americans to the world. He is the most despicable person to hold the office of President in modern history; I say this thinking of the many, MANY lies he has told and the crass things that escape his mouth on a daily basis. Hearing his name in the same sentence as Barack or Michelle Obama’s makes me sick, because there’s no way he is in any way equal to them; he doesn’t deserve to share the same line of a sentence with them! As for First Ladies, Melania Trump can’t hold a candle to Michelle Obama: she hasn’t got the brains, the class or the empathy. She’s a selfish, vain woman using the most banal of language to appear deeper than she ever will be. How your country let this horrible family take over, I will never understand, but I hope you’ll be able to wrest back control from them.
Socrates (Downtown Verona. NJ)
RM...how dare you denigrate our First Mannequin ! She's a store window model of the highest caliber. And her anti-cyber-bullying work has apparently turned her husband into the world's biggest cyberbully. What a fine fake First Mannequin she is.
Catalina (Mexico)
@RM To answer your last paragraph -- it's called the electoral college, an archaic election procedure that can put a person in the White House, despite not getting the majority vote.
aqua (uk)
@Socrates A first mannequin you say? And all her porn pictures? How is she different from Stormy Daniels, aside from less integrity of course?
John McLaughlin (Bernardsville NJ)
I am ashamed of my country. We elected the King Birther, Donald J. Trump as our president. Beyond shameful. We are better than this and the Blue Wave (election 2018) shows we are fighting our way back.
BTO (Somerset, MA)
The Liar-in-Chief is being chided by Mrs. Obama for saying that her husband wasn't born a US citizen. I can't feel to bad for her as Trump doesn't think that anybody is a US citizen and he certainly wants to change the constitution to restrict future ones. The best thing about her book is that she shows us that it's OK to speak out against him, as do most of the people writing comments in the NYT.
Californian (San Francisco Bay Area)
Michelle Obama has that certain kind of honesty that comforts and unites, rather than creates dread and divides. She’s one of a kind, and arguably even more of an empathetic leader than her distinguished husband. I wish her well. I for one do not wish for her to run for office. I’d vote for her in a heartbeat but do not wish such ill upon her. God bless her.
JA (MI)
@Californian, People said exactly the same thing about Hillary and begged her to run again. When she did, everyone dumped on her. Why should anyone want to run for president, especially accomplished women.
aqua (uk)
@Californian I wouldnt say thats true. While I like her, my strong instinct is that of the two of them he is more empathetic, but his job necessarily made it harder to express that. But watch them carefully and its he who is the most caring in all the small details. In many ways, ironically give her rejection of politics, she is more of a politician than him on a fundamental level.
Jack black south (Richmond)
My family misses having this wonderful woman as FLOTUS. One of the very finest human beings ever occupying the residence and position. In mourning for now we have an empty shell of a person there.

I don't read a lot of contemporary biographies, but I look forward to reading this one. One classy lady and a great role model for all.
say what (NY,NY)
Said trump about President Obama in response to Michelle Obama's comments on his false birther claims: "I’ll never forgive him for what he did in many other ways, which I’ll talk to you about in the future.” Just as soon as I make them up.
aqua (uk)
@say what As Pete Souza wrote on his instagram "Here’s how 46 minus 1 responded today: “What Obama did to our military made this country very unsafe for you and you and you." What? That is an utterly ridiculous statement. Really it is a treasonous statement. Let’s not forget that President Obama did make the decision to launch the special forces mission that took down bin Laden. And swipe to see photos of President Obama and Michelle visiting troops at home; President Obama visiting troops in Iraq and Afghanistan (he did this five times, but it’s something 46-1 is apparently afraid to do); President Obama visiting wounded warriors at Walter Reed (something he did every 3 or 4 months)." https://www.instagram.com/p/Bp94P-EFWUZ/

I truly miss the Obamas, Michelle Obama in particular. She was a gracious, thoughtful first lady. As per usual, Trump makes the book about him. Mrs. Obama has every right to take Trump to task for his unforgivable birther movement. If Trump had one scintilla of the Obamas decency, empathy and family values, he'd be a far better human being and leader. Unfortunately he isn't capable.

“She got paid a lot of money to write a book ……" And she did write a book, unlike some 'authors' who hire professionals to do all of the actual writing (Tony Schwartz, for example) and then pretend they wrote a something they'd never even read.
cheryl (yorktown)
@KJ Yes she actually can write! all by herself! Trump's insane envy of the Obamas oozes out of him at the slightest provocation. His past vindictiveness may have been a factor encouraging the many threats against them when Obama was President. He can't let it go: the idea that a black man was smarter, better educated, more respected and more loved than he could ever be. And the man has an intelligent as well as beautiful wife, a woman whose loyalty is genuine and freely given, not bought.
Bruce A (Westchester County)
@KJ Wait, didn't Trump write the Bible? Best bestseller ever.
Petey Tonei (MA)
@KJ, psstttt don't tell Trump that Obama had already written two memoirs before his presidency and he made decent money out of telling his story. To this day my 91 year old mother holds Obama in her daily prayers. She was so moved to read about his humble beginnings, the challenges and racism he faced in his life and most of all, losing his mother so early, she did not even see him become President.

Michelle Obama has been a great First Lady. Glad to see that she has spoken up about the birther issue, a false issue created by President Trump to divide our country. I too wonder when will this ugliness ever end!

“I’ve lain awake at night, fuming over what’s come to pass. It’s been distressing to see how the behavior and the political agenda of the current president have caused many Americans to doubt themselves and to doubt and fear one another,” she writes. “I sometimes wonder where the bottom might be.” Yeah, I also keep wondering where the bottom is. With Trump, does it even exist?
nyc2char (New York, NY)
@John half of this country voted him IN. I'm thinking they said they wouldn't but they did, and now they cannot believe what has transpired...but....alas....too late....the damage is done....now lets see how he leaves this country.....literally killing each other while China and Russia salivate on the sidelines waiting to POUNCE! God Bless the American Voter.
sophia (bangor, maine)
@John: Trump is a cruel man and I don't think cruelty does have any 'bottom'. It just gets more inventive. We must never go where he wants to take us - and he's getting darn close, closer than I like, each and every day.
Geo (Vancouver)
Trump is too shallow to have a bottom.
Ilene Starger (Brooklyn, NY)
The Obamas are the embodiment of so many sterling qualities: decency, integrity, intelligence, family values without hypocrisy, dignity, honesty and empathy. One misses them as White House occupants more deeply with each passing day. Barack and Michelle Obama have truly earned, and deserve, the respect and admiration they receive from millions of people in the U.S. and throughout the world. Such respect cannot be bought, seized, or won by bellicosity. They still provide hope in very bleak times, and will no doubt continue to help countless human beings live better lives. They exemplify what is best about America.

@Ilene Starger All so true. We wish our kids hadn't become old enough to vote just as the Trump era happened. Decency, of all things, is so sorely missed...
riverrunner (Pennsylvania)
@Ilene Starger So true, Ms. Starger, and so beautifully stated. I very much admire and miss President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, too, and I sincerely thank you for this lovely comment!
