The concept of gathering skills from a powerful institution like the New York TImes and bringing back that knowledge to smaller newsrooms is a profound method for enriching local journalism. I found Mr. Kim's sentiment to be something I have found particularly true for young journalists like myself: "they want to feel as if they are progressing toward something" However small, the ability to improve each day to create journalism that matters to a community, whether a few thousand people or a million worldwide, is a goal that drives positive, meaningful journalism.

This seems like a great opportunity for young journalists like myself. Even though the current president and his administration mock and bash reporters, they have not dampened the appeal to join the profession, to ask the hard questions and to find the truth. It's time to begin my application for this program.
