Wewonder: Are the spiders charged (money?) for their eye tests?

I have always been afraid of spiders, but this article made them absolutely fascinating and, dare I say, almost cute.

I love science. We don’t have all the answers, so we just keep looking.

Wow. Great article...fascinating!

It is clear that the scientists took great care with their subjects so that none of the subjects were harmed. Speaking for myself, a few spiders less in the world would not have caused me grief.:)

@BParker I was happy personally to find out at the end that the spiders were not harmed by their "hat". Just because they're small and scary to some doesn't mean they are not an incredibly beautiful and functionally complex work of creation (and by this I mean evolution, really).

Science is so cool!

Woah this is super cool. It's almost as the spider has a brain capable of Parallel Processing!!! What I wouldn't give to be able to section off my brain to be able to handle multiple processes at once (as if they were one task). Also this is definitely reminding me of a certain light novel where a sentient spider learns to section off parts of her brain.

This is really interesting, but why are we spending money on it ?
I can only assume that one or more university professors (Elizabeth Jakob ?) was paid to look into this.
If we had not paid for this research, some student somewhere would be paying slightly less in tuition or in student loans.
The world would be better off with less of this research.

Your first words contain the answer: “This is really interesting.” Curiosity, the muse of human intellect. This type of research often yields the seed of broader discovery.

@G an ironic comment coming from somebody in EDISON New Jersey! Sometimes it isn't clear where scientific research will lead. Maybe the way spider eyes function will influence the design of future robotic eyes, etc. The money is a tiny drop in the bucket of money spent in this country. And gives a bit of respect to these tiny creatures.

@G
yes we'll all be better off with more ignorance
