This is the most important midterm election of our democracy. If there are no changes in the congress it may be the last time we will exist as the country we all enjoy living in period. It does not matter whether you like someone or not this is not personal, it is about maintaining our democracy. Generations ago people left England to escape living under a king. We do not need to go backwards. Vote Blue!
Professor Ice (New York)
Men who sleep with underage woemen are child molerstors. A democrat who facilitated or participated in such activityy is running in my state. He is running on the platform Stop Trump, Vote Menendez. Frankly, if that works the voters in NJ deserve to be the laughing stock of the rest of the country, since sleaping with prostitutes is clearly a lesser sin than sleeping with minors.
Kalidan (NY)
Here are the reasons that democrats will not vote today: a. Bad weather b. The candidate was not pure nor pristine (i.e., not under 6 years of age, nor dead). c. Instagram and other social media posts were too compelling. d. Where was the app for all this? e. Mom could not drive me to the polling booth. f. I thought I could vote online. g. Democrats take me for granted. h. How do I know I can take a selfie there? i. What election? Here are the reasons republicans will vote today: a. this way, we can shoot all the people who want to come in. b. It is bad for me, but it is worse for them. c. I will get healthcare, they wont. d. I wont get a tax cut, but the rich will (and I will be rich soon, once 'those' people are gone). e. I want to smell coal, benzene, dioxin in the morning. f. I am a male, I hate females. g. I am a female, I hate other females. h. education is overrated, infrastructure is unnecessary, and we should be a white christian theocracy where everyone else lives in fear. i. Yeehaw.

Except for the exploding job market, GDP growth above 4%, reimposing Iran sanctions, stopping border invasions, putting American workers first, renegotiating trade deals in our favor, repealing unfair sentencing laws, ........ This president really stinks. MAGA!
Doremus Jessup (On the move)
If we don't vote today to stop the rot, this could possibly be the last time any of us are ever allowed to vote again. Yes, it can happen here. Don't let it.
Chris G. (Brooklyn)
"I hate him, but I hate Democrats more." Pretty much sums up why I left the GOP about 10 years ago. They aren't about anything other than hate.
BNa (Toronto)
Here’s your chance America: prove to yourselves and the world that you aren’t as bad as Donald Trump and his ethically bankrupt cronies. If you can’t pull this off, the slippery slope to oligarchy is going to get a fresh coating of slime, and coming back is not going to be easy, if doable at all.
LV (USA)
Volunteers offered voters pizza? Would you care to report what political party the volunteers are from? This is straight out of a banana republic.
GUANNA (New England)
I dislike the GOP politics, but I hate Donald J Trump. The GOP policies are bad for most Americans especially the way they deregulated industry at peoples expense.but Trump is extremely dangerous, he in not even on the spectrum of what is the political norm within the US. He is a dangerous low, a mistake, a failed experiment.
There (Here)
I hate him but I hate democrats more. That's exactly how myself and most of my fellow swing voters feel, it's not that we're in love with love with trump , but the thought of socializing our country and a soft border scares most of us into voting Republican.
Kaddie Abdul (Cincinnati, OH)
@There Sorry, you might think you’re different from him but your words betray you. If you are anything other than 100% Native American, you are a hypocrite to claim an anti-immigrant stance. America is premised on the fact that people who are downtrodden, who have limited opportunities and circumstances in their countries, can take their determination, grit, and bravery, give up all they know in order to try to make a better life for themselves and their families. I will take anyone who is willing to walk 2500 miles, through jungle and deserts, through unbearable heat, and heavy rains, with little food and supplies over someone who has simply sat on a plane for a few hours. Being poor, being brown, and being an immigrant are not crimes but people like you are determined to make them so.
Kay Johnson (Colorado)
I thought Trump adding a trillion to the deficit ought to wake up folks- Mc Connell needs some cash from you for that bec they gave the tax break to folks like him. You won’t have to worry about your “socialized” Medicare- get real and look at the lies Trump tells Americans- every day. He’s a con man.
Bobo (Malibu)
I'm pleased to note that this time around the Times is being much more cautious and geographically inclusive in its election coverage. I think we all learned something from 2016.
Sharon Bakos (Dallas, TX)
How sad is it that a vote is defined by hate? My votes were cast for those who have consistently shown their integrity by talking about the issues that face us - healthcare, education, the climate, and who we are as a nation.
MM (Toronto)
The USA has become so divided. Two tribes that don't understand each other, don't like each other, don't listen to each other. Good luck.
Kaddie Abdul (Cincinnati, OH)
@MM True, but this isn’t just tribalism. This isn’t one side wants a blue house and the other side wants a red house. This is a battle as important as the decision on whether slavery should remain legal and be expanded...as important as whether a social order predicated on Lebensraum and das Volk is inevitably violent and hate-filled for everyone that does not check its narrow boxes. These are two-sides of the same coin rather these are coins of different sizes that fit different machines. People who believe in restricting women’s rights to their own bodies, who fall in easily with racists and nazi demagogues both domestically and internationally, and who blatantly manipulate the legal system to empower people with those ideas cannot understand those who oppose those ideas and vice versa. Nor should they try because every element of the former should be repugnant and reprehensible to an logical viewpoint.
Jenn (TX)
@Kaddie Abdul first, "believe in restricting women's righs?" When there is a child in there it is not longer JUST her body and this right to choose mess is just that, a mess! We have plenty of choices; to have sex, to not use protection, to not take birth control, and to not take advantage of the day after pill. BUT you think its ok to give the procrastinator or irresponsible another choice to kill a baby? When did we forget to teach responsibility and consequences? When does the child have a right to live? Who stands up and advocates for them? You can believe what you want and scream for woman's rights but I'm going to scream back for babies rights and I'm glad to say at least half of America Agrees with me. Today is a big day....and the votes will decide.
Will Hogan (USA)
Democrats are not going to give a huge tax break to the rich, saddle your kids and grandkids with trillion dollar annual federal deficits built up in times of plenty, and scale back your Medicare and Social Security by calling them "entitlements". So, if you are middle class, seems that the Democrats are going to protect your main financial interest. If social issues are more important than your main financial interest, then by all means vote accordingly.
J. (Ohio)
Mike Dewine spent the last seven years as Ohio Attorney General attacking the Medicaid expansion. Only now when it is expedient does he favor retaining it. By contrast, Rich Cordray has long been a champion of ordinary people and deserves to be governor. I hope my fellow Ohioans don’t have short memories when they cast their ballots.
Kanaka (Sunny South Florida)
"Multiple studies have shown that bad weather on Election Day can decrease turnout, which in turn tends to help Republicans, because the groups most likely to be deterred from voting are those who tend to vote Democratic." Oh come on! We've survived 2 long years of the Trump tsunami. A little rain or cold weather should be a cake walk. Vote!!!
Sherry Moser steiker (centennial, colorado)
We voted by mailing in our ballot. Why dont more people choose to do that instead of going to the polls?
Ruat caelum (NYS)
@Sherry Moser steiker Because most people probably don't have that choice. New York, which pats itself on the back for practically every little thing, was ranked 26th in voting access recently. We do not have early voting, voting by mail, or no-excuse absentee mailing. My Republican state senator is the chair of the senate Elections Committee and he is largely deaf to appeals for improved access.
YReader (Seattle)
...and in Washington State, we've already mailed in our ballots. No lines. No weather impacts. No day off work to stand at a booth. No manipulation at the polls (assuming mail-in ballot processing is secure). Just time at home, reading the voter pamphlet and commentaries, voting at leisure. It may not be perfect, but it sure beats what most of the rest of the country is going through. Vote blue, the rest of you. Please.
C.L.S. (MA)
I don't know about anyone else, but Donald is so wonderful that I think I'll faint every time he says something. He makes me feel so great, and he is so handsome as well.
Abraham (DC)
Now there's a formula for success: The Dems have got to adopt a set of positions that will make the good people of Ohio, for example, hate them just s little less than they hate the Republicans. Shouldn't be *that* hard. But they may have to start getting out more.
Grassfed Beef (West)
Y'all need to send a correspondent out to Oregon's District 2, a huge chunk of real estate encompassing most of Central, Eastern, and Southern Oregon. Rural progressive Democrat Jamie McLeod-Skinner is aiming to unseat a Republican incumbent known for his Trump-lovin' ways and for living in the pocket of Big Pharma. Let's get an update on that race.
Karen (Ohio)
We Republicans aren’t afraid of a little rain and we’ll be out by the millions!
Lindsay K (Westchester County, NY)
Dear Voters on the Eastern Seaboard: I know it’s going to rain tomorrow. Make sure you have your umbrellas handy. You’re going to need them when you go to the polls. In case you were wondering, there will be plenty of other days for you to stay home because it’s raining and you don’t feel like emerging from your house. Tomorrow is not that day. Regards, Lindsay K.
Myrasgrandotter (Puget Sound)
Political campaigns in Britain last about 4 weeks. Serious campaign reform in the U.S. to limit campaigns to 90 days should be a goal for every voter. Think of the money saved, and corporate control thru campaign $$$ lessened. If we can't get rid of the Citizens United court ruling, we could at least limit the impact with a much tighter time frame. Think of the president back in the White House working (or not) instead of running through our tax dollars jetting around to partisan parties.
Dave Chittenden (Scandia, MN)
At last this grueling, insufferable mid-term election is taking its final gagging breaths. Whatever the outcomes across the nation that comfort or terrorize us, can we allow ourselves to acknowledge that on Nov. 7, school buses will pick up students, parents will commute to work, patients will undergo surgeries, vacationers will fly away, fallen leaves will be raked, and neighbors will still be neighbors? Our lives, for better or worse, will continue as before, yet, blessedly, without the incessant bull horning political ads that have turned most of us numb and mute. While we celebrate the silence, shouldn't we also lament the 100's of millions of dollars that were spent on marketing this carousel of candidates? Just think of the better ways we could spend these dollars to work on the real issues facing our nation.
Walt (Chicago)
@Dave Chittenden - Well, the campaign money is spent to influence the outcome of the election. The outcome of the election will determine how we address (or don't address) the issues. But not spending the money on the campaign doesn't make us better able to address the issues. I agree that campaign finance laws should restrict "big money" but that isn't going to happen because big money can already influence elections (and will thwart that change). What we really need is some change on the Supreme Court...but that's moving in the opposite direction.
John Archer (Ny, NY)
I'm sorry but why is it necessary to quote the inane comment by "Jewel Kingsley?" Is this some sort of wimpy idea of "balanced" journalism? I would have assumed The NY Times was better than college journalism, especially on the eve of one of the most pivotal moments in US history. Give me a break!
Walt (Chicago)
@John Archer I'd at least like to know her reasons, not just her conclusion.
Annie (Pittsburgh)
@Walt - Me, too.
mivogo (new york)
@John Archer Obviously you don't speak to many Republicans. That is the #1 opinion they utter when asked why they'd vote for this destructive president, brainwashed by years of Fox News' relentless demonizing of Hillary, Obama, John Kerry, Nancy Pelosi, Maxine Waters, Elizabeth Warren, etc. The comment may be "inane" to you, but the Democrats better figure out how to counter this pervasive attitude before it's too late. www.newyorkgritty.net
