It's time to look forward. It's time to modernize. It's time for Gillum.
Bethed (Oviedo, FL)
I LOVE Gillum. I like Bill. He votes correctly as a senator. It's time Florida cleans up its swamp made by Scott and a years of Republican governors and legislators. It will be wonderful to listen to a progressive, smart and humane person in the office of governor of Florida after years of Republican duplicity. That includes Jeb Bush, in my opinion, who couldn't even stand up to Trump and helped put his own brother in the president's chair.

@Bethed I think the problem lies in too many believing that progressive policies are "radical". This is a belief promulgated by Republicans, and Democrats have been too scared to challenge that assumption. So many of the policies now pursued by progressives were actually normal some years ago. The older woman quoted in the article asking "where are we going to get the money?", should know that we can easily afford these programs by reducing the unnecessarily gigantic military budget, along with taking back the huge tax breaks that have been given to the 1%.

Time for Florida to change. Growth from in migration is out of control. Gillum's policies will solve that problem. If Florida can get personal income taxes of 10% plus, state inheritance taxes, increased business regulation, increased business taxes, all the Progressive ideals of Mr. Gillum, then this silly growth will halt, people will leave, the streets will be less crowded, the remaining businesses will be less crowded. It will be more like life in upstate New York, only very hot 6 months a year. Time for a big change. Vote Gillum!!!

Nelson is one of his the worst senators in th country. “Low-key” is not the proper word to describe him. The proper adjective is “lazy.” As a republican from a republican zip code, he has never responded to any of my concerns, and in my 22 years in FL I have never received any quarterly, semi-or annual updates on his activities in Washington snd the issues he had been working on for the state of florida (which most likely were none.). Unfortunately for Florida this tired old man is riding on the coat tails of Gillum. Scott has been an aggressive , tireless and responsive governor. Sure Hope he can win so we can finally get rid of lazy Nelson.
Rita Prangle (Mishawaka, IN)
@Pvbeachbum Scott has been agressive in pursuing policies that benefit him and his cronies, while taking away from the 98%. That is not admirable. Scott is a criminal.
There (Here)
Everybody has a job here in fl and is making much more money than we have in the past, there should be at least a modicum of respect for that for Scott , Nelson is a socialist who has never had a job outside of politics.

I, like the lady in the article, voted for Bill Nelson and Ron DeSantis. Rick Scott has proven secretive, good buddypolitics and self serving while in office. This run for him is about his own legacy, not the citizens of this state. Mr. Gillum is over the top radical. He will fail in his bid, as touting marijuana legal, his voter base will be too stoned to make the polls.
Suzanne (Florida)
They are both good men. I felt good voting for them and every other Democrat on the ballot.

Florida might be back on my retirement destination list

Make America Kind Again. Vote for Democrats! Please. I need civility. Aren't you tired of this exhaustive and mean-spirited administration, currently without checks and balances?

Fingers crossed for tomorrow (or today on the East Coast).

NOT a test of optimal party strategy. The two will sink or swim together.

There ought to be a law against incrementalism as practiced by Nelson style Democrats. Incrementalism as practiced by Democrats is just another name for Republicanism Lite. Enough with so called Democrat politicians too timid to be called progressive.
Huh (NYC)
The Democratic Party has always been a big tent party, and majorities built by assembling coalitions. The tent is big enough for both Gillum and Nelson. An overwhelming majority of longtime Democrats hope moderate candidates like Heitkamp in ND and Sinema in AZ succeed. They even want a conservative Democrat like Manchin in WV to win. Because a Democratic Senate majority depends on them winning in states that lean very conservative. And a House majority depends on Democrats winning in moderate swing districts, particularly in the Midwest and the South. Incrementalism versus revolt doesn’t matter if you have no power. Only foreign agents trying to sow disorder would advocate for a Socialist lead purge of the Democratic Party. If you want a party with purity tests and loyalty oaths, the Communist Party is your natural home.

@Huh What good is a Democratic majority if the CONservative Dems vote against their party, or demand watered-down proposals in exchange for a vote?

I grew up in South Florida. My father, a general contractor, would go to a corner to find black day laborers as needed for a job. They knew him, knew he was fair, and were eager to work for him. I admired their strength and hard work ethic. I saw de facto segregation as a child - separate water fountains, bathrooms, restaurant entrances, and wondered about such differences. In high school we had one black student on our tennis team. I think he was the first black player at the tennis club where we practiced. We were silent in the car as a friend's Dad dropped him off in his part of town after practice, on the way to our suburb. Years later, when living in a small town in northern Florida, as I drove to visit Gainesville I would pass a river with a large tree by its bank. I was told that in years past it was known as the hanging tree. Yes, I think it would be great for Floridians to elect Mr. Gillum. Go sir!

Bill Nelson has appeared low energy and lackluster during this midterm campaign. However, Democrats have loyally been supporting him in order to prevent losing his Senate seat to Rick Scott, our current underperforming Republican Governor. Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gilliam, on the other hand, has brought vision and excitement to Florida politics. He's a refreshing alternative to Republican Ron DeSantis, who has been following the Donald Trump MAGA playbook while relying on Trump endorsements to boost his support.
Robert (Out West)
So as a progressive, you’d rather have Rick “$1.6 tril Medicare Fraud Fine” Scott in there. Boy, that’s some thinking, that is.
Diana (San Francisco)
@Sunny Agreed, Nelson’s an uninspired campaigner. He’s a decent man and not a bad Senator—a constrast to Rick Scott’s scorched earth tone. But Andrew Gillum brought needed life to the election, and unabashedly progressive stances on issues. He’s inspired excitement across constituencies from Moms Demand and the Parkland kids to Our Revolution and the Dream Defenders and NAACP. It was fun to campaign for him. Yes, we can have healthcare and higher wages and treat immigrants with respect.
Sunny (Winter Springs, FL)
@Robert - Heck NO!!! I wouldn't vote for Rick Scott for Dog Catcher. Don't forget that, as FL Gov, he also refused to expand Medicaid under the ACA, denying coverage to 800,000 Floridians.
